— Ace Update: This really isn't too much beyond what we know, but a Texas source just told Rich Lowry "He's in."
Word From The Inner Orbit: "Nothing has changed."
Well, okay, Bryan, if you're going to be King Pill of Buzzkill Mountain.
But of course they'd say that. You announce on the day you announce. You don't tip this stuff off, on the record, before that.
...
Allah's speculation was sound.
Ben Domenech, who's frequently had Perry on as a guest on his Coffee and Markets show, and ergo has people he routinely reaches by phone, now says:
Call to Texas. "If you're calling about what I think you're calling about... I can't talk about it yet." Ha!
All Right... Domenech tells me this was a call to a Texas consultant.
I sort of think maybe he's, erm, underselling this.
I stand by my posting of La Grange.
And No... I didn't post it because it's about a whorehouse. I didn't even know that. It just sounds like music you hear right before there's a Texas-sized barfight.

I haven't paid that close attention to it since I wasn't really into politics until recently, but how much of his "success" was continuing policies of predecessors (GWB)?

Though I see less signs of him getting in then Palin. From last thread: "Perry and her are tight and I think they are doing a bait and switch. Perry will endorse Palin when she runs. There was a report saying so about a week ago. Perry called a special legislative session in Texas and will have his hands full."
Just my take though. Opinions?

Very nice bill. Tough. Good for Alabama.
Or as the media will soon be referring to them - Talabama.

Perry has had his over-reach issues in the past (Trans-Texas Corridor, Guardasil), but he's fairly pro-business (he's been accused of Cronyism, etc., but never very successfully- it's kind of like when people claimed cronyism when Halliburton was selected as the company to do most of the energy contracting in Iraq- who else was going to do it?), and he's softer than I'd like on illegal immigration- but far better than most. He doesn't cotton too much to the "path to citizenship" but he's much more concerned with the criminal nature of all-too-many illegal aliens (drugs, human-trafficking, etc.) than he is with the border itself.
On the good side, he's never really raised taxes (fees are another thing, but he's even kept that down), and he takes rebukes (like the ones he got over TTC and Guardasil) pretty well and knows when to back down. He's been very good about sending such resources as believes are within his power to the border (Texas Rangers, State Troopers, and Texas Guard) and trying to secure at least our side of that particular war-zone.

There was a story, a while back, that said that only one or the other would run, and that Perry was waiting for a decision from Palin. Don't know how accurate the story was -- and don't know if Perry was tired of waiting -- but it's why I think Palin's not running.

As to Ron Paul, I could see him running third party against Perry and Obama. Yes, I think there is that much bad blood. The only thing that might hold Ron Paul back is that that would damage his son Rand's career.

He spoke as cleanly to the problems created by this administration of anyone I've yet heard. He didn't attack. He just laid out the case for the impacts of individual issues affecting the business community.
Cavuto asked about his thoughts regarding Perry running for POTUS and he said that he's a Romney fan because he's the only candidate with the business experience to pull out the economy, although he thinks Perry would be great too.
I hope they put the clip up on FNC.

He didn't. I think he helped with the Clinton campaign in 92. Because, in 92 (IIRC) he was a Democrat. He switch by 95 (again, If I recall correctly). He may have, technically, been part of the Al Gore apparatus in Texas in 92, but don't mistake that for Al Gore's presidential campaign in 2000- he was a solid Republican (and GW's Lt. Governor) by that time.

Yeah, we created a ton of jobs in Texas. Unfortunately, a lot of them were 7 dollars an hour filled by illegals. Don't believe me, just go to any fast food place in Dallas-Fort Worth and see who serves your Big Mac. Of course, a 7 dollar an hour job is better than no job, just sayin. And there are still a lot of Katrina people here down in Houston and that area. But we also gained a lot of tech jobs in la-la land (austin), and a hell of a lot of oil field workers.
Perry made a lot of noise about doing this and that about the border, and ended up not doing a damn thing. He is ultra-connected to the inside the beltway gang, although he denies it constantly, and will run as an outsider. He has perfect hair, and spouts bullshit (what candidate won't) BUT he ain't Obama. So if he is the nominee, he gets my vote. As some moron said one time, I'd vote for the Anti-Christ, if he ran against Obama. (and also, i haven't seen any pictures circulating on the Net containing pictures of Perry's u-know-what, so that's another plus.)

Really? You're going to trot out TTC as something current? He dropped it 4 years ago- at the beginning of his last full term as Governor. He even made a statement about it (I'll see if I can find it) where he basically said, "I still think it's the right move for Texas, but it's obvious Texans don't like the idea, so I'll drop it." Which was about the only honest way he could get out of it.
If you're going to be upset about his government over-reach positions, complain about Guardasil. And then, be sure you note that the "extreme lengths" people had to go to to opt out was basically a one-page form that said, "Yes, I know the benefits, no, I still don't want my daughter to have it."

Obama will not win. The MBM will do double-overtime to re-elect their guy, but the die has been cast. Obama will not be retooling policy; he'll just rearrange personnel. And his policies are The Suck.

I include Austin the way people from Michigan include Detroit: that is, as little as possible. Yes, Texas has moved closer to the center, but we're still one of the most conservative states in the Union, so I'm not terribly concerned at the moment. And most of the rest of us have been rolling our eyes at TexasTech for at least the last 15 years.
I understand Perry is a squish on border security, that is a mighty big liability in my book.
He's not... exactly. It's hard to explain his position to those grafted to either end of the argument, but I'll give it a go.
He's not terribly concerned about illegals who really just want to cut grass or clean houses. That's not really his concern, and they're not hurting the Texas Economy enough to really measure (see also: +250,000 jobs in the last few years). He is, however, very serious about border security generally, because he sees it as a National Defense/Criminal issue: he wants to control the border to stop the drug/gun/slave trafficking that's going on.
Now, I don't completely agree with him on that position- I do think any illegal alien is a blow to national sovereignty: BUT I don't accuse him of being soft on the border- just soft on illegals, if you get the fine distinction there.

Rick Perry with Sarah Palin's endorsement wins the GOP nomination for President of the United States.
Palin w Perry's endorsement does not.
Perry is going to run. People from outside Texas are emailing, mailing, and calling for him to run. Never met a Texan lacking a big ego.
He dusts Obama in the general election.
Only question is who is the running mate? Paul Ryan comes to mind. Sarah Palin offered Secretary of Energy. John Bolton offered Secretary of State. Romney Secretary of the Treasury. Rudy Guliani becomes the Attorney General of the United States.

He has to fend off such things every single time he runs for office (twice, now, on TTC, once on Guardasil, and since I don't even remember when on Oil). So far, he's succeeded. Whether such things would gain legs in a national election is a different question, of course, but he has a good strategy for such things judging from his success with it so far.

Paul would have to quit the House. Even if he could legally run for both offices, it would look bad, like he's hedging his bets. (This holds for Republicans, not for Democrats.)
Still, it's more than a year to the VP pick and there will be a lot of changes to the dynamics to the race until then. If Perry's polling regularly above Obama, Ryan might be willing to do it.
If you want a fun choice, how about Thad McCotter?

But, yeah, the Bush wing is not the Perry wing. The Bush family is a political dynasty, so anything threatening that is going to get some blowback from the entrenched power. Perry would be a desirable split if the intent is to more equitably distribute power rather than consolidate it to one family's desires.
Again, this is more of a swipe against the Bush power base than an endorsement of Perry. However, were Perry to run against the Floridian Bush (for example), I'd go with Perry. Nepotic dynasties have no place in this country.

I like Palin, but I cannot convince the independents in my family to vote for her, they cannot stand Obama, but they cannot stand Palin more.
Not sure who I will vote for in the repub primaries, but with Palin, I feel there will be more time spent defending her than more time attacking the Messaih, who will be staunchly protected by the press. I just don't know about Palin, with only 17 months until next november, I would rather vote for a repub who has the best chance of beating Obama, I just don't see that with Palin, I see it with some family members, they cannot be swayed, and I would rather be convincing them to keep their opposition up against Obama.
If her numbers change, then that's different, I just don't see it, and to me kicking Obama out next year is much more important.
Perry is a good choice. Romney, not a fan off, but compared to a radical like Obama, all repubs are conservative. Even a potted plant is a good choice for the repub nominee.

Perry is heartily resisting calls to tap into the Texas Rainy-Day fund to pay for schools, and teachers and administrators (who get 3 months off every year, but get paid enough to support themselves for the whole year) are now busing into Austin to pressure lawmakers into taking more of that money than they already have.
I want him to have to drop those Promthean boards and go back to white-boards (or blackboards). I want him to realize that the rest of us have to produce something to a certain standard- and we don't get to use "Well so-and-so didn't do their job" as an excuse for 5+ years (like many teachers do).

My wife had a friend who was killed in Afghanistan during Bush's terms. There was a bit of a memorial in NYC, where he was from, and his was asked to go into a private room for a moment. After just a few seconds the president of the United States walked in, alone, and spoke with them for 15 minutes. There was no publicity, no entourage, not motorcade and no press. This guy was a grunt. Not an officer, not famous, not anything other than a patriotic American who did his duty as he saw it.
That's why I have tremendous respect for George Bush.

It is executive experience the country needs most. Texas is big, but being a governor of a Southern state is more or less a "tallest dwarf" distinction. It doesn't guarantee the competency to run a complicated, diverse modern democracy. What is worse is his focus on social issues, with most of the country far more concerned with economic issues. We don't need a year and a half of a culture war. We don't have the luxury to elect another on-the-job training president. Perry should stay in Austin a few more years and maybe try for VP in 2016.

Posted by: The Dude at June 09, 2011 01:30 PM (Ig1Wo)
Perry has been elected as Governor 3 times in the state with the largest job-growth of any in the country. He was Lt. Governor (the seat with "real" power) before he was Governor, and Ag Commissioner and State Rep before that.
His "focus on social issues" extends all the way to... what? He supports a bill requiring that expectant mothers see a sonogram before they have an abortion- well, so does most of the nation. He invited all the other Governors to a "non-denominational prayer event," and he's had other prayer events before. He's a very staunch social conservative, but it's never what he runs on (always business, growth, and taxes) and never the "focus" of what he tries to get done in Austin. So I'm not really sure where you're getting that.
On the business side, he worked with Texas's largest small business association to pass a tax bill that simultaneously increased state revenues while lowering the total tax burden (including prep and accounting costs) on small businesses. When everyone else though he should turn the surplus money raised from property taxes (about 6 years ago, I think?) around and give it back to property owners (a good, principled idea- I'm not besmirching it) he was smart enough to realize that the boom economy wouldn't last and, instead, placed it in the rainy-day fund: which turns out almost to have been prescient.

So now the goal-post moves.
Tell me, what do you feel about Herman Cain? Is he, too, too wet behind the ears?
The thing is every candidate will have areas of strength and areas of weakness. Assessing Perry, I see this:
1) A man who has repeatedly shown that he can be elected in large-scale (albeit not national scale) elections. Indeed, this includes both primaries (his base) and general elections (his base + enough independents to win)
2) A man who has consistently fought the knee-jerk politician reaction to a) raise taxes and b) spend any surplus.
3) A man who has never flinched from his convictions- even when they were unpopular- but was wise enough to know when to concede defeat.
4) A man who has made Texas one of the (if not the single) best states in the US for economic growth- which means more jobs.

Non-Texan says what?
More than one or two political junkies have called Perry "the once and forever Governor." He beat Bill White to pulp (politically speaking) in a year he was supposed to be very vulnerable (thus the reason he had two Primary challengers).
With Rick Perry, it's very easy to forget that, every time he's run, he's been able to convince a clear majority of Texans that, however flawed, he was the best choice.
The other thing is this: assuming you're right: He's very 'meh' among some of the most conservative people in the Nation (what, 3rd behind OK and UT?) which places him solidly on the Right side of the aisle, without being quite so scary to the squishy middle.

WaxTrax shows outside of Chicago were rare. Usually had 2-3 Label groups who shared members and rotated lineups like a P-Funk / Parliament / Funkadelic show.
No two were alike, and to see one at a venue like the Limelight was a big deal. If the style of music isn't your bag, that's cool.
I have friends who don't like jazz. But they wouldn't deny that the 3 night run at Carnegie Hall during the NYC JazzFest is the stuff of legend. Where else could you see Miles on stage with BBKing, Sonny Rollins, and Jim Hall in the same night? Nowhere but Montrose or Newport...

we have a huge split in the Party, on one side is the Party Apparatus, their hangers-on and adherents, they claim that the only way to win is by picking moderate (progressive-lite) canidates, they fear the collapse of big government worse than they fear the collapse of our economy and culture, they claim to understand the trouble we are in, but only want to talk about solutions not actually solve any problems, they act like conservs, they talk like conservs but whenever it's time to BE a conservative they always get all weak-kneed and flibberty-jibberty.
they are the enablers of the socialist-destroyers and they still have most of the levers of power at their disposal, they are the enemy just as much as the socialists are, never, ever, ever trust anything they say.
on the other side are the remants of traditional america, the limited government-types, the individual liberty-types and the christians, they want they government out of their lives, out of their pocketbooks and firmly bound by the restrictions stated in the Constitution, they believe in this document the way it was written, not the way 220 years of lawyering says it is (and which is bought hook, line and sinker by the progressive repubs)
so prog repubs work really hard to take out real conservs and real conservs are finally starting to fight back and the prog-pubs hate it, they think the GOP is their's... it isn't, not anymore.

Reminds me of the scene in Dark Knight where the Joker (Obama) gets girl-punched by Rachel (TPaw, Romney, etc.) and says, "You've got a little fight in you. I like that." Enter Batman (Perry)- "Then you're gonna love me".
Yup. If there is one thing I like about Perry, he's been consistent on bitch slapping Obama every chance he gets... and it leaves a mark.

Signs have been pointing to her running and she is well positioned in gop polls now. I think she'll be fine.
Signs that she's going to run such as... participating in the June 13 debate to which she was invited but isn't attending? Addressing the recent Faith and Freedom conference? Hiring veteran campaign advisors? Spending a lot of time in IA, NH and SC giving speeches? Forming an exploratory committee? Terminating her Fox News contract?
Yes, in early polls that are biased towards name recognition she does well among GOP primary voters. Amongst the general electorate, she polls somewhere between Charlie Sheen and the Ebola virus.

It's the principal of the thing. There was an opt out clause, that I had to inconvenience myself to go through when I didn't need to in the beginning. If my doctor and I discuss such things about my daughter, that's fine. I don't need my doctor standing there with a needle telling me I can opt out if I want.
But that's just me, I guess.

Eddie is a top 3 shredder.
Not a one-trick pony, but certainly not so head and shoulders above his contemporaries that he could be considered the 'best' at even his own genre.
He ranks behind Beck, Clapton, Zappa, Bolin, Iommi, and at least a half dozen other Rock and Roll guitarists I can name here.
He lacks versatility in tone more than technique. He also has a minor base of work when compared to other Rock Guitarists who played and recorded volumes more than he...
He's a stud. He had a huge impact, but for a limited time.

I agree with you, however, at this point it looks like it's either Romney (RomneyCare), TPaw (Look! I got a new marketing team! Pay no attention to my squishy record!) or Perry. The rest are there purely for entertainment purposes.
Perry v. Romney is a no brainer IMO.
I suppose there could be a debate about Perry v. TPaw, but when it comes down to brass tacks, who's got the better resume and record and who has been most consistent?
Or to make it more simple: which State is currently less in the shitter? MN or TX?

I'm not opposed to Perry running, and in fact I might support him if I like what I see; I just don't know anything about him aside from having nice hair.
However, know who his candidacy helps? Mitt Romney.
Currently, the race is shaping up to be Romney or the not-Romney candidate. Currently, that candidate appears to be Pawlenty. In a largely two man race between Pawlenty and Romney, TPaw has a pretty good shot. In a three-way race involving Romney, Pawlenty and Perry, the latter two could end up splitting the anti-Romney vote.

Toll Roads have basically exploded since Perry became governor- on the other hand, I've been to all the neighboring states in just the last couple of years, and we have better roads, so it's a trade-off.

Reuters is out with a story late Thursday that says Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may leave the Obama administration next year to become World Bank president.
The White House declined to comment, and ClintonÂ’s spokesperson denied that she is eyeing the job.
But the Reuters story, which relies on three unidentified sources, says the talks are far along: “A third source said Obama has already expressed support for the change in her role. It is unclear whether Obama has formally agreed to nominate her for the post, which would require approval by the 187 member countries of the World Bank.”

I'm not a huge fan of making political predictions, but it seems to me that the nomination is Perry's to lose, if he runs at all.
He appeals to enough of the base to get their consent and support, and he'll carry Texas (which is a lot of votes). I think he plays well in LA, FL, OK, and most of the mid-west as well, so he's got a lot of wiggle room.
Moreover, he's the only one (with actual name recognition) who is a current governor and can say, "Look at my accomplishments. Isn't it time we had someone with government executive experience and a laundry list of actual accomplishments in the White house?" Even with his negatives, I bet that would generate a lot of support.

Okay- Rick Perry folks trawling the inter-tubes for Perry's weak points? Make sure you address Guardisil.
Here's the skinny: Rick Perry advocated for (and got) requiring Guardisil immunizations as required state immunizations for public school enrollment. He ALSO left in a provision which- by all accounts- makes it very easy to opt out of that "required" immunization and still have your girl enrolled in public schools. I'm not sure how easy it is or isn't, and I won't find out for about another 12 years, so ask someone with a girl older than 14.
So, to recap: three ways to avoid the Guardisil injection: 1) opt out. 2) private school. 3) Home school. Anyone who can't do 2 or 3 still has option 1.

Texas is big, but being a governor of a Southern state is more or less a "tallest dwarf" distinction. It doesn't guarantee the competency to run a complicated, diverse modern democracy."

Sarah won't run. She will endorse Perry, she will fund raise for him and she will graciously accept a cabinet position when he wins.

He's a humble player. Never seen him step on anyone's toes. Ever.
Posted by: garrett at June 09, 2011 06:23 PM (Qcjo..)I always got that vibe from him. Jack Bruce pointed out (after playing with a bunch of other guys in the late 70's and early 80's) that Clapton had the best time of all of them.
I double down on that one. Clapton and SRV has/had monster "time." That grabs you before you even get a chance to marvel at the chops.
My current favorite guitar player is Laith Al-Saadi. Sings his ass off, too. Laith's regular bass man (Dave Stearns) is a beast, too. Laith doesn't do "the look" of a pop star. Kinda has that chunky, plain look that's deceiving. So get past that and listen to the chops.

Perry makes a good bottom of the ticket guy. We will have to see how well he does on the debate stage...that is a difficult area to be.

We need the women to chime in:
Who is better looking Romney or Perry? You have to be honest, because that determines which one win the Primary. If you doubt it, place your bets.

Perry, but who cares? I was for Haley Barbour and then Mitch Daniels so looks are pretty obviously not a factor. LOL

I think a lot of that had to do with running for re-election in Texas, you can't trash the hispanics and get elected here. I think he will have more "acceptable" position on this subject in a national election. Remeber what I said in my original post, he is a CAREER POLITICIAN. Like it or not ...

Key word there is mandatory. Do your research.

@544
Sorry I'm not one to generally disqualify someone for one thing, but this is a huge to me. Who the hell does he think he is to tell me I HAVE to have my daughters vaccinated with this crap?

Bypassing the Legislature altogether, Republican Gov. Rick Perry issued an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.
this is the correct link to the story.

Opt-out option for parents
Texas allows parents to opt out of inoculations by filing an affidavit objecting to the vaccine on religious or philosophical reasons.
Not mandatory.
Also a dead issue.

@549
I did read the opt out portion, but doesn't it concern you how he went about this, and in general doesn't it concern you that he (the government) is telling you what's best for your kid?
I'm not trying to start a fight, I'm really confused and concerned by his decision to do this, I would think others would question it as well.

I wish the vaccine had been around when I was teen. Would have saved me from having to have a cervical biopsy and a cancer scare when I was in my 30's.
Governments can propose anything...as long as it's not mandatory.
I'm more concerned with being forced to buy health insurance and facing penalties if I don't.
Further, the legislature killed this and Perry could have vetoed the bill and made it happen anyway, but chose not to. He knows when an issue has gone south and knows when to back off.
If they came up with a vaccine that prevented AIDS, would you not have your loved ones vaccinated?
