Hey Conservatives! Are You Ready To Nominate One Of Your Own For President? Too Bad Because The Hottest New Establishment Darling Is....Jeb Bush.
— DrewM

Jeb Bush: Tanned, Rested, Moderate!

“Bush’s speeches are getting better, tighter, and more campaigny, from what I’ve noticed,” a senior Florida republican strategist says. “I still think Jeb is only a three-in-ten shot to go, but if you’re in his shoes, and Chris Christie has taken a huge hit in stock value — wouldn’t you wait and see? If Christie survives and runs, it’s a harder proposition by far, obviously.”

...

The third issue that could cause Bush headaches as a presidential candidate [after Bush fatigue and amnesty] is his support for Common Core. He’s not backing down, despite the controversy, declaring at a charter high school in Hialeah last week, “The aspiration ought to be: Every child should be college- or career-ready. And we should benchmark ourselves to the best in the world. The good-faith effort of Common Core State Standards and now these Florida standards is the right path to be on.”

The problem for Bush is that a vocal chunk of the conservative grassroots thinks Common Core is precisely the opposite of a “good-faith effort.”

Via Andy let me add a fourth issues that would cause heartburn if Jeb were to run...global warming.

“I can see him coming around to some combination of a cap-and-trade program as the best alternative to regulate and at the same time not completely abandoning his principles on something by going to a place where we’re scientifically uncertain,” said David Struhs, who served six years as the Bush-appointed head of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
“Those are the kinds of conversations that he can engage in in a way that a less familiar politician, particular in the Republican Party, can’t do, even if they’re intellectually capable of it,” Struhs added. “They have to go hard right to prove they’re conservative. Jeb Bush is given a pass there because he’s already been there. He’s already done it.”

Um, I'm not sure conservatives buy Jeb Bush is a conservative.

Yes people will point to his work on school choice but is there any evidence that it moves votes? It's the right policy (at the state and local level) but there's no reason to believe that another massive reorganization of federal education policies will lead to more local control and choice. A truly conservative national education policy is...get the hell out of education policy at the federal level.

Some people are committed to running through every warmed over moderate before they are willing to even consider an actual conservative. Unfortunately those people are the ones who run and fund the GOP.

Related for fun: Mitt Romney is back to thinking global warming is a problem.

“It is a Democrat issue but I think it’s an issue for both parties,” he said. “If you think global warming is just in America, it’s not just America. There needs to be a global understanding and a real global effort. There’s no global effort whatsoever.”

I wonder why anyone thinks the GOP misunderstands anything.  They know what they're doing.  That their goals and the goals of their base do not coincide is not coincidence.  >_> It is simply a problem for them to work through.

FFS, can't we find a politician who has enough brains to know that AGW is baloney, and start talking about the flaws in the data, so when the fucking thing comes unravelled, we will be there saying told ya so?

In order to make that judgement, the politicians will have to get their heads around some facts and data, so they can make the call on how far we get out ahead of the coming Globaloney crash and burn. It is coming - just a matter of how soon.

124 NEWS FLASH I've been checking out various lefty sites. New Euphemism Alert! First there was Global Warming. When that didn't pan out, they switched to Climate Change. But when they failed to arose general panic due to being too wishy-washy, as I noted in some reports last year the cutting-edge enviro-groups started using Climate Chaos which is a lot like "change," but more panicky and hysterical, and thus more effective. But maybe -- too hysterical to be taken seriously? Hence, it's time to fine-tune that euphemism one more time, to the perfect level of not-wishy-wishy and not-overly-hysterical. Something like... http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2014/01/25/18749757.php CLIMATE UNCERTAINTY "Thriving Resilient Communities: Adapting to Climate Uncertainty from Cuba to California How might we have food resilience amongst climate uncertainty? What might we in California learn from Cuba's pioneering initiatives in food and farming? This November a delegation of permaculture designers, farmers, and global citizens converged in Cuba for the 11th International Permaculture Convergence to explore these questions, and discover solutions to our collective problems." Look for this phrase to creep into the language over the next year. You heard it here first!

Romney is not back to thinking anything.  His position has always remained the same.

I disagree  with his general statement on global warming  but   he has  always indicated  that he cannot say for sure whether global warming is man made or not but that any steps to reduce GW  cannot be at the expense of the economy and that the USA  should  not be the focus when other countries are allowed to continue  with no restrictions.

And we build from there by pointing to all of the things we aren't totally super evil about. Most of us don't beat our own children, for example. That's something I intend to highlight.

Just once in my life I'd like to have the opportunity to vote for a GOP candidate who hits his Democratic opponent in the general election as hard, or harder, than he hit his Republican opponents in the primaries.

Instead, the last couple of cycles the Republicans have selected someone who goes medieval on the asses of other Republicans during the primaries, and then turns into an agreeable milquetoast when facing a Democrat in the general.

268 Anthropogenic Climate Change IS a problem. No it's not, unless "Anthropogenic" has suddenly started meaning "Natural." Oh, also- not a "problem." The earth has supported life at temperatures both significantly higher and lower than current global norms/averages. It will continue to do so (sans Jesus returning, or the sun dying/going nova) for millennia to come. Warmer temperatures indicate a longer growing season, and more abundant food, which is generally a good thing. Colder temperatures aren't so good (and it looks like we're entering a phase of cooling, given the actual temperature numbers), but mankind will, I'm sure, find a way to cope. To accept either the "Anthropogenic" or "problem" portions of climate hysteria, one must choose to be completely ignorant of actual history.

Dr. Harrison Schmitt actually has gone to the Moon, and he'll tell anyone who listens that it's a huge reservoir of Helium-3, which if available in quantity makes getting commercial fusion power going on Earth a hell of a lot easier.

-- His wife works for the Vampire Squid, a.k.a. Goldman Sachs. I continue to believe that it would have been best for the country and the world if Goldman had been allowed to go totally bust in 2008, as they would have if left to their own devices. Not to mention that this opens up Cruz to the "Wall Street plutocrat" line of attack which worked well against Romney. (Romney was a LOT cleaner than Goldman Sachs, mind you.)

361 O/t Interesting twitter fight concerning Piers Morgan and a bunch of trannys... If any of you good people check out Twitchy once in a while it's worth a laugh or two.... Piers made a "blunder" apparently by calling a tranny a former "man" which upset the tranny as she considered herself to be a "boy" until the age of 18 and never a "man". Piers is in hot water with this lefty group now even though he is totes on their side. Too ironic.... I think.... I'm hoping for an epic AceofSpadesHQ movie review of this Piers Morgan twitter fight to show up later this afternoon when the head ewok gets out of bed.....

364 I'm sure in any Sino-America War in the Taiwan Straits, it will be a huge advantage to America if we are paying 3x the cost of fuel than the Chinese are. Will we out-Green them militarily. Also, the Chinese have almost zero Diversity. It's basically just all Chinese dudes. As we all know, Diversity is our Greatest Strength. How could a non-Diverse nation like China ever militarily defeat a Diversity rich nation like America? Just speaking in terms of physics and science that is unpossible. That's not an opinion. You can't accomplish anything without Diversity. China doesn't have any african-americans people or hispanics. Hell, they don't even have white people! So, as you can see, scientifically speaking China cannot stand up against our Diversity and Green initiatives. China thinks they can compete just be building military technology and training their soldiers and sailors. They don't even allow vagina-americans in the infantry! Come on!

366 Well, I will not vote for Jeb Bush. I did not vote for W in 2000. The minute he started that "compassionate conservatism" crap and talking about wanting to be "the education president" I figured he was a loser. I also feared that the GOP Congress would go squishy as soon as they had a GOP president. So I wanted Gore to win. I didn't actually cast a vote for Gore because of his endorsement of partial-birth abortion, i.e., infanticide, but I hoped he would win. I didn't vote for anyone for POTUS that year.

393 Mitt Romney is back to thinking global warming is a problem. Deer Mitt 1. There hasn't been any notable global warming for 15 years. And unless summer starts on 1 April and lasts to 30 November and is blistering hot, I doubt there will be noticeable warming this year, either. 2. We've never had the discussion of "what is the optimal climate for life on this planet?". The warmists proceed from the assumption that a global temperature of 290K with 270 PPM CO2 is "optimal", but we know that's not true. Ask the ever expanding polar bear population if you don't believe me. 3. There's the very real possiblity that we're entering into a sun spot minimum comparable to the Maunder Minimum that lead to the Little Ice Age that lasted 500 years, beginning at about 1350 and lasting to 1850. Which is taken to be the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and the advent of global warming.

People will find something wrong with all of the above and whine and gnash teeth and scream RINO or religion or something. I am tired of the RINO screeching.

It is waaaay too early for this. If the media want to vent their spleen on Jeb, then let them. I don't care. Bottom line: I will vote against the Democrat. Every time. And those of you who stayed home in 2008 or 2012 are the reason we have a jug-eared jackass in the WH and his "signature legislation" of Obamacare ruining our economy until the rest of most of our lives (or, so says the CBO guy today). While your reasons for staying home and allowing the Dems to win were justified, due to your high standards, which I agree with, by the way. However, unlike the blind Dems who voted for a black person to be president, as, unprecedented and historical! Part of history! Or the ignorant lambs led to slaughter for a beer or a pack of cigs or foodstamps, told to vote next to the (D). Or the people rigging the polls and finding trunks of votes, or throwing away the military absentee votes....you are educated, smart, conservative but plain stupid when it comes to moral high ground trumping reality: which was without you the Dems would win. This proved right in 2008, and, I think, in 2012 when, omg, we can't vote for a MORMON!!!11!

So, from comments today, I see the beginning of the circular firing squad forming again, full of high dudgeon and flip out. Let's see: vote GOP and maybe, by a freaking miracle, take back the Senate, and repeal Obamacare. Or, flounce! Moral high ground. Or, in 2016, let's say the ticket is Romney (who says he is not running, so there's that) or Ryan or Rubio. Ok. They are trying to pass an immigration bill. Their statements, some taken out of context, are that security does not matter and blah, blah, or they have to do this first. Ok. This is an issue I do not like: more added to welfare rolls, etc. But this bs of paying for their crap anyway, to the tune of, uh, over $7 to $9 thousand dollars per tax paying household in Floriduh (I haven't looked lately, could be more), well, fellas, that ain't working either. Speaking of my corner, many illegals are not here anymore because the economy is so bad they deported themselves back to Mexico...but I digress. I am going to listen to what these guys say and try to figure out their reasoning, as I think Rubio and Ryan are pretty smart guys. Yeah, politicians...but let's try something new and listen to what whoever says is running vs having it being read to us by Rush who is just reading the Drudge headlines (and I like both Rush and Drudge).

The choice will be clear again: stay home and let this raft keep heading for the rapids, or vote against the Dems, who sure as hell don't have your backs. If a third party is to be birthed, you better get busy, as, right now, I see no alternative but to vote or keep rolling over and playing dead. Oh, and I will go to my grave believing Romney/Ryan won but there was lots and lots of illegal doings going on including hacking in some states. But, crap, let's try to get it right this time and do what our parents and grandparents did when a Republican won the primary (do you think for one red hot minute my parents adored Nixon? Or Goldwater? Or anyone other than General Eisenhower? I mean, please). Unfortunately, with the Internet, our lives are, like Baroque's, in continuous campaign mode.

There is a tremendous amount wrong with your entire comment.  But, I'll just say that I am tired of GOP apologists who seem to believe that the entire purpose of conservatism is to elect republicans.  that we are playing a team sport and the only goal is to help the "r" team win and defeat the "d" team.

People who think like that are as much, if not more, of the problem for the U.S. than the dems. Because it empowers the GOP to be as liberal as it wants, knowing that "conservatives" who think simply electing an "r" is the solution, when the republicans are really as much of the problem as the dems.

Let's see: vote GOP and maybe, by a freaking miracle, take back the Senate, and repeal Obamacare.

Talk about not paying attention.  Both McConnell and Boehner have stated publicly that they have no intention of repealing Obamacare - only "fixing" it.  This is what I mean by beliving that voting "r" solves everything.

but I digress.

So, your argument is listen to whatever they tell you during a campaign and do not - under any circumstances - listen to things they've said in the past or done in the past (or things they are telling people in private)?  Yeah.  Brilliant strategy.

I hate to break it to you, but every politician (even the dems) run to the right during the election (and particularly during the GOP primary).  None of them ever actually do anything they promise during the campaign. For instance, no republican ran on passing amnesty.  Yet, that is what they are going to do.  No republican ran on increasing spending.  Yet they did that.  So, your argument here - listen to what they say during a campaign and ignore everything else - is absurd.

The choice will be clear again: stay home and let this raft keep heading for the rapids, or vote against the Dems, who sure as hell don't have your backs

Vapid at best.  Vote for the GOP to increase spending, increase gov't, increase entitlements, and pass amnesty or else what?  The dems will do all those things?

I'm pretty tired of GOP apologists who think they are smart explaining why we have to vote "R" or else we'll get "D".  Ohhhh, scary!  If we don't elect the "r" we'll end up with more gov't.  Newsflash - the R's also increase the size, scope and expense of gov't.

I'm sick of the moral high ground of the unprincipled republican apologists telling us that our lives depend on voting for republicans no matter what they do or say.  And then complaining that we have other ideas and complaining that we are "truecons" or "outrageously outraged" or "self righteous" or whatever nonsense.

the reality is you are just as self-righteous about your "principles", the only difference is that your principles are different.  Your principles are "elect republicans no matter what".  That is what you are self-righteous about.  That is where your high moral dudgeon kicks in.  You are better than us because you will pull that "r" lever no matter what!!!  That makes you smarter, better, and more righteous in your mind.

We don't owe our votes to the GOP.  The GOP is not entitled to our votes.  The GOP and any candidate it runs must earn our votes.  The GOP as a whole has done everything in its power over the last 20 years to try and get conservatives to stop voting for the GOP.  So, it shouldn't really surprise the GOP or the GOP's die-hard supporters that conservatives are extremely leery of voting for the GOP.

Actions speak much louder than words and the GOP's actions prove that the GOP is a left of center party that disdains conservatives and conservatism.

I note that nowhere in your rant do you give a reason to vote for the GOP.  You merely bitch and complain that if we don't vote for the GOP the Dems will win.

typical.

422 Dear Mr. Monkeytoe,

And where, kind sir, do you offer a solution? You may consider me vapid and bitchy, and if you think for one nanosecond a monkey toe's opinion behind his keyboard bothers me, well, whatever.

Where is your solution? I will vote for a miracle conservative, who manages to unite the party, in a freaking heartbeat. I consider myself a conservative, but in the weird world we live in, where the odds seem to be against us with demographics and liberal media bias, I am a "realist conservative" who is willing to not only roll with the punches but knock down Dems at the same time.

While there is political speak to "fix" Obamacare, from what I have read (and I admit, since 2012, I am both disinterested in politics, as there is a life off the keyboards and calling Congress; as well as disillusioned, with both sides of this argument: conservatives vs Rino. My point is this: division only strengthens the Dems and they are thankful for this process, brought on by purists and the liberal media. It makes their liberal messaging easier. Do you think if,maybe, Rush (who I respect) had supported Romney earlier he would have won? I think it would have helped, if, right out of the primary process, there was uniting instead of whining to beat this stupid preznit we have. So, you see, you are fighting against your own (me) who does not agree with you. That is exactly what the Dems want. 'gradulations, as Corinne Brown would say!

Therefore I have decided to support anyone against Democrats, without all of the hoopla and character assassinations (unless warranted, of course, like a Weiner or other perverts and weirdos). I have thrown rotten tomatoes at Huckabee in the past. No more. The alternative: a Dem, is far worse.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it. If you want a purist conservative, find him and let's roll. If you want to stay home, stay home. Jimmy cracked corn, and I don't care.

But since you are so busy taking each bit of my comment to pieces, let's see your solution! xoxo

More stupid.  If we just shut up and support whoever you tell us to we'll beat the dems!!!! Hooray!!!  And then what?

I love how you want to argue we should have "supported Romney earlier".  what?  What does that mean?  Should we even have primaries?  Why?  Shouldn't we just wait and see who the GOP tells us to vote for and then do so?  Silly.

Your response to me is more of the same.  "Shut up and support the GOP no matter what becasue I am a realist who says so!!!!"

What is my solution?  fight for conservative principals and goals.  That does not = mindlessly supporting the GOP as you suggest.  Not even close.  Not even remotely close.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it. If you want a purist conservative, find him and let's roll. If you want to stay home, stay home. Jimmy cracked corn, and I don't care.

Obviously, you do care or you wouldn't have responded with more vapidity.  I never said "purist conservative" - those are your words.  those are teh words of the "shut up and support the GOP no matter what" brigade.  If we don't just kneel and worship at the GOP altar whey you command, we are "purists" or "right-wing crazies" or a "circular firing squad".

Your solution is obvious - "shut up and support the GOP".  That's a poor solution and not remotely conservative.  That is a big-gov't solution.  the GOP is not a conservative party and does not pursue conservative goals.  So your blind allegiance to the GOP is not well thought out.

I consider myself a conservative, but in the weird world we live in, where the odds seem to be against us with demographics and liberal media bias, I am a "realist conservative" who is willing to not only roll with the punches but knock down Dems at the same time.

In other words - not a conservative.  You've already given up.  You are willing to take whatever the GOP gives you to "beat the dems".  That is exactly what I said was the problem and you admit it and continue to claim that is somehow a good thing?

Sad.

And, I'm responding to your comment because it so cleanly encapsulates the thinking of a large number of commenters on this site - that we should just all shut up and support the GOP no matter what.

Conservatism does not equal the GOP and the GOP does not equal conservatism.  That is my point.  Everyone who argues for blind loyalty to the GOP is not conservative - they are republicans.  They have tribal loyalty to the "R" brand, not loyalty to any conservative principals.  That is the problem.

the other reason this isn't true is that you posted your original comment complaining (yes whining) that conservatives don't shut up and vote "r".  That was the whole point of your original comment.  If you didn't care about conservatives who don't blindly follow the GOP, you wouldn't have felt the need to comment on how we should just shut up and blindly follow the GOP.

this is a type of comment we repeatedly see.  The "why don't you all just shut up and support the GOP no matter what or else the dems will win" comment.  It's as if some people don't understand the difference between conservatism and the GOP - they are not the same thing.

426 Ah, the wisdom of Monkeytoe. Merci!

This is a stale argument for many years now. I "got" it in 2008. I supported it then and do hope for a pendulum swing of conservatism.

I do not tell people to shut up, by the way. Those are your words. What people do is their bidness. Find where I said shut up: yep, you can't. I am simply making a statement, jumped on by you as we see differently and you are getting all defensive and appear, to me, to be the only one whining.

I think it is bad enough when Dems and people who vote GOP are in a room and the topic of either Dear Leader or Romney comes up. There is no middle ground...none. Totally polarized opinions based on content learned from the media. Rarely are opinions based on their own reading and making decisions for themselves (and this is in families today who vote opposite of each other. Obama has done one thing: he has polarized this nation).Very rare are the reasonable people who now see Obama's failures and things Romney predicted...and other GOP Congresscritters predicted, in the failure of Obamacare and the impact on the economy. Romney would have been a much better president than the one we have. He, at least, knows how to successfully run a business, is smart, and wants to fix this country. Baroque not so much, as he mostly appreciates his free ride on Air Force One and the chance to swag a little or sit at his empty big boy desk. There was a choice to make in 2012 and this is the choice we got: a pretender vs someone who wanted to make a difference and correct the ride off the cliff.

That said, it is such a pity that I FREAKING AGREE with you as a conservative, and I am one, dude. But there is no path to victory with purists vs the Rino label you throw at anyone who does not agree with you.

My glass is always half full. I adjust to change. And, apparently, from the last two elections, this is how it may be: a candidate with conservative values, but, to gain votes, has to compromise on some issues (one issue I will not compromise is my pro-life stance and the entire mess Obamacare has added to that of us all now paying for free abortions and birth control). Other issues I can...sometimes..compromise on. It is like a marriage, I guess, or a relationship with children: they are not always going to agree with you.

I am going to hopefully be very surprised in 2016, with the abject failure and chaos of obamacare creating conservatives from Dems like water to fine wine. I think the elections this fall will, hopefully, start the pendulum swing back to conservative principles, if it is not too late after 2008 and 2012, where Dems waltzed in and took over. Should we win all of Congress, maybe there is hope for repeal or "fixing" the law as it stands. That would give me a lot of hope.

I have no idea who you are nor do I care. Seriously. Whatever, dude. Nor do you have a bit of knowledge, apparently, on being a conservative realist, and that is what I am and have evolved into since 2008. xoxo

427 I'd vote for a genric RINO, right after I named my first child after Obama.

===> are  EXCELLENT  rants.

= = = = = = = = = = =

They are BOTH   *ABSOLUTELY*   true.

The rest of us need to print them out and laminate them ... then think long and hard and seriously about how to reconcile them in our own minds.

Thank God the next Presidential elections are a good long way off.

Thank you both.
