Participation in a stocks IPO, i.e. Initial Public Offering, is one of the more sought after trades on Wall Street. Often, an IPO investor is able to get into a stock at a relatively low price and realize an almost immediate gain once trading commences, especially if the IPO is “hot” or, rather oversubscribed, meaning more investors wanted shares than were available. Visa’s IPO was blockbuster-level “hot.”...
Somebody, somewhere decided to allow Nancy Pelosi-or her husband-participate in what was the most anticipated IPO that year. It could have been one of the underwriters selected by Visa to manage its IPO or it could have been Visa itself that awarded the Pelosis the coveted shares. Who was it? And, did they approach Pelosi or did Pelosi approach them?
So the offer of a hot IPO is actually a gift to the recipient.
How does Politico cover this -- or cover it up?
Paul Pelosi, husband of the then-speaker, bought $2 million worth of Visa stock in March 2008.
Politico's account here seems extraordinarily mundane compared to Mike Flynn's, like all the Pelosis did was go down to their local market and stand in line to buy some rutabegas. Rather than being offered -- for some reason, despite not being major institutional investors -- an IPO which would spike in value immediately upon the initiation of public trading -- that is, VISA offered Pelosi a ten dollar bill for the unbeatable price of five dollars.
I don't think that's an accident.
To be fair, Politico might just not understand what it's talking about, and might just print up articles without calling anyone with expertise about the subject matter reported.
Not sure that helps all that much, but I guess that possibility is in the mix, too.

There is exactly zero chance Politico doesn't know how unseemly this is. I'm is this business exactly and the concept of ANY individual being able to buy millions of dollars of a sizzling IPO like VISA is non-existent. The largest Institutional investors don't get that much.

Its not only things like IPO's, insider trading and campaign contributions, its directly hiring firms with govt contracts that their family and friends are running.
As Ace mentioned earlier, there is always somebody on the other side of the stock trade, some firm that didn't get the subsidy, some contractor who could have done the job better for less taxpayer dollars.

From a legal perspective, while trading on insider information may not be illegal for Congressmen (or "Congresspersons"... "Congresspeople"?) under securities laws, I still have a hard time believing that trading on insider information you obtain as a Congressman isn't a crime. Information is valuable, and obtaining something of value in relation to issues you vote on is corruption by definition. In other words, just because it isn't "securities fraud," doesn't mean it isn't criminal under other laws.
Moreover, trading on such information (and doing better than the general public) is akin to a trustee self-dealing in matters affecting a trust. It's a breach of fiduciary duty. After all, consider that every time a Congressman buys a stock, someone else sells it; every time a Congressman sells, someone else buys. If Congressman are doing better than the norm on their trades, that means that the people they are trading with (let's call them "citizens") are doing worse. In this case, Pelosi got a chance at an IPO that might have gone to someone else. And, when she and her husband sold the stock soon thereafter, they were likely selling something that was overvalued because of the IPO hysteria.
In short, the Congressman (or woman) who trades on insider information is willfully screwing the public he has sworn an oath to serve.

Make insider trading in congress illegal just like it is for everyone else, however, raise salaries for congressmen to $500,000/yr with a bonus of an additional $500K if they pass a balanced budget on time each year. Add in NetJet cards proportional to the distance to their district and $10,000/month in housing allowance. Senators should get $750,000/yr with a matching bonus and perks.

Man I can dig it. Base salary 50K. Which is min pay. Come up with two modifiers. every 1/2% less than 20% GDP gets you +1, every 1/2% greater than 20% gets you -1. Every 100B surplus gets you +1, every 100B deficit gets you -1. A negative or 0 result = min pay. A positive result nets 50K bonus for every +1. => limmit taxes to 18% GDP and get a 200B surplus, +4, +2 = 6 = 350,000 salary.
If they respond to bribes, I am not above doing it to get a balanced budget and low taxes.

I have a good friend who attended the same University, same years (he was in the "Russian Army Reserves" at the time) while I was floating on an Aircraft Carrier off Vietnam.
Russia (Soviet Union, to be precise) kicked him out of the country because he's also Jewish.
Most conservative U.S. Citizen I know today.
Years of attendance don't count -- it's subject matter. My friend got his degree in Optics. He's no lawyer.

Interesting gradation. I would go with a plan like that, but I have a penchant for simplicity. If I wanted to assure that we would have a balance budget (pegged at some percentage of GDP), I would make a provision to my original plan to remove their NetJets cards if they fail to pass it on time each year.
Once someone has access to their own jet, taking it away is worse than death.

Good point. I could go even further. If the balance is negative, and you voted yes on the budget, or any CR if their is no budget, you drop to 0$ pay, and loose your jet card.
We'll use the prisoner dilemma against them.
