Higgs Boson Found?
— rdbrewer

From Hot Air's headlines yesterday, two different teams of scientists at the Large Hadron Collider are reporting a "bump" in their data. That's what they always say when they think they may have found something.

Experts were quick to point out, however, that the bumps could also be caused by computer glitches and flaws in data models.

Fabiola Gianotti, spokeswoman for a 3,000-strong team using detection equipment called Atlas, said: 'We cannot say anything today, but clearly it's intriguing.'

Her view was shared by Guido Tonelli, spokesman the other team using CMS detectors, who independently discovered bumps in their data as well.

He said more research was needed to isolate the difference between 'statistical fluctuations or possible hints of a signal'.

If the bumps are from nature and not man-made error, scientists will have found proof of the last piece in a jigsaw puzzle that forms a theory of how we understand the universe.

Excellent video explaining the Higgs boson below the fold.

There are many theories contained within the Theory of Relativity. A lot of them have been proved since the advance into space travel. Those are no longer theories.

A theory is just an explanation for how the world works, that has been refined to a high enough degree, and supported by enough experimentation and/or theory, that it has become generally accepted.

A bunch of NASA scientists were running doing some reasearch trying to find out if the space between the orbiting electrons in an atom was really a vacuum. They kept getting back obscenely high numbers which they didn't expect, which led them to surmise that maybe there was some sort of energy field that they had no means of measuring, and it wasn't really a vacuum at all.

I rather doubt they'll find it.

What's advancing is mankind's ability to measure things that were previously too small to measure. They'll find an even smaller particle, requiring an even larger collider, rinse and repeat ad infitium until The Big Guy says, "That's all I'm gonna let you find. Not a scientist (just a bit of college chemistry) .... but at this scale it seems to me you're dealing with physics and particles and fields and energy that makes the concept of a vacuum inapplicable.  The "orbit" of an electron really isn't anyway.  It's more of a general area you're likely to find an electron, and most of those regions aren't even orbit shaped.

It has been a couple of years, but there have been glitches, and in any case, the thing shuts down annually for a whole season.

It's not just seeking the Higgs. It's also looking for supersymmetric particles which may explain Dark Matter. If they exist, then there'll be a bunch of them to find. And if they don't exist, that'll send the theorists scurrying back to their drawing boards to come up with a new theory to test. There has to be some physics to explain the observations.

107 @ParisParamus-Hewitt He said "selective treacle," which is a British for syrup or sap. What he's saying is that to some particles the Higgs field is sticky and slowing (like syrup) but to others not so much (like air). The amount of effect it has on a particle is what we term the particle's "mass." This is pretty exciting, as it would be an indication that we understand quite a bit of the standard model. Any hypothesis or theory explains what you set out to explain. But a good theory should also fit well into the larger picture -- and help explain something you weren't thinking about at the time. For example, the Big Bang wasn't designed to explain the cosmic background radiation (in fact, no one knew about it at the time) but it does explain it well. The caution is warranted, though. Think of it like a scoop about a political scandal: the more spectacular the news, the more you should dot your Is and cross your Ts before you say something you might have to take back. In any enterprise of this size there will be varied levels of recklessness and caution among the participants, so the leaders spend a lot of time distinguishing the official group position from a single person's opinion. And some of you might be interested to know an original criticism of the Big Bang theory was that it brought God INTO science, by positing an actual "moment of creation" in contrast to the steady state theory popular at the time. The Big Bang theory was actually proposed by Georges LeMaitre, a Roman Catholic priest, and Pope Pius XII had no problem with it, as he assumed God caused the bang. The apocryphal comment was "Just because I believe that God created the universe doesn't mean I presume to tell Him how He had to do it."

I think you're right. He wanted to find what he called the Unified Theory which, IIRC, would've pretty much proven His Existence, kinda, sorta.

However, that would destroy Faith IMO, which is believing in what you can't see, or hear, or touch. I think The Big Guy will just show all the scientists enough to keep them looking further.

192 Let's say they find this H-B thing.  I guess its wahoo for the sciency types, but it does us good for what again?  Eh.

Reid apparently is going to offer a plan of $2.5T deficit cuts to raise the ceiling $2.5T.  Course we don't know what baseline he will use or hell even what budget.  So basically a raise in debt ceiling with unknown (never ever) cuts.  Meh.

The article linked above about the Higgs boson at UK Online could not have been worse written if a team of monkeys had randomly banged it out on typewriters.

Physicists do not like referring to the Higgs boson as the "God Particle". It's presence (theoretically) explains why and how sub-atomic particles gain mass, but if it is never discovered, then another theory is substantiated.

It is not the final particle that will "explain" the Universe.  It is part of a theory that has been (so far) successful in predicting how certain short range nuclear forces work.

Why is this important to everyday people?

1) it explains how matter is put together

2) it  could lead to profound means of generating different types of power from sub-atomic matter reactions  (release of  the binding energy, which is what present day nuclear reactors do) in very efficient and clean ways

3) it could lead to making new types of matter, predicted by the Periodic Table, which could have remarkable properties, such as a room temperature superconductor, which would revolutionize everything about modern day technology

Other than that, Obama is still a schmuck, and we are all still likely to be financially boned in the near future.  Just wanted to stick in my two cents in todays AoS craziness.

Carry on.

The Universe is a jigsaw puzzle of infinite size.

Facts are the pieces.

Theory is how we think they fit together.

Laws are the rules we use to determine how we think they fit together.

"I don't think anyone expects the default to actually occur, because why would you think that was possible? It just seems such a preposterous outcome," said Ashish Shah, head of global credit at AllianceBernstein. "It would seem ridiculous to default when creditors are more than happy to take your credit. But the risks of a downgrade are rising and that ultimately is going to raise the cost of funding for the country."

But the funny thing is that even if they exist, string theory could still be only mathematical masturbation. It's just that if they don't exist, my understanding is that string theory is pretty much out the window.
