— DrewM Both houses just gaveled into session.
In the House, it's kind of an odd deal. The Clerk of the House actually runs the session, swearing in all members and then taking nominations for House Speaker. Then there's a voice roll call vote (the only one they ever conduct in the House), which will take about an hour.
Then Pelosi will give Boehner the gavel (sweet) and Boehner will give a speech. And cry.
A Repulbican House isn't going to be a cure-all. It's just one house and they are after all Republicans and politicians. The really bad ideas will stop but how much good can be done? That's to be seen.

Thanks to Nathan Wurtzel and David Hauptmann for the photos.
I probably should have added Ron Johnson for Russ Feingold. That's a pretty sweet switch.

Before the day's swearings-in, gavel-passing and speech-making, lawmakers gathered Wednesday morning for a bipartisan prayer service that some described as an emotional prelude to the opening of the 112th Congress.
Republican and Democratic leaders alike read proverbs and psalms, stood for prayers and sang "America the Beautiful." It was a moment of bipartisan harmony inside St. Peter's Catholic Church, still decorated with Christmas poinsettias and a Nativity scene. But lawmakers knew that they would soon begin sparring over the issues facing the country as the new Congress takes take hold a few blocks away inside the Capitol.
John A. Boehner, the Ohio native who would become House speaker by the afternoon, did not offer any words of his own, in keeping with the understated approach the Republican leader has taken during his ascendancy to the most powerful position in Congress.
The Rev. Daniel P. Coughlin, the House chaplain, delivered an opening prayer during the private service, which was closed to the press.
"It was a very positive tone," said Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), a close friend of Boehner's. "I think the message is good, that we're one country and working together."
According to the program there were Bible readings from outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi* (D-Calif.), who read1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 12a, 13; incoming Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who read Proverbs 2:6-11; and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Tex.), the Republican Conference Chairman, who read Matthew 20:25-28. Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the assistant minority leader, read prayers.
Attendees read the Prayer of St. Francis and sang "America the Beautiful" as the service concluded.
*who, upon uttering the word of God, screamed in agony and burst into flame.....

Incoming House Speaker John Boehner wants all his friends to see him get sworn in on Wednesday - Facebook friends that is.
For the first time ever, Congress will be broadcast live on Facebook. Boehner announced that beginning at noon on Wednesday, people can go on the popular social media website for live coverage of the first day's floor proceedings and his first speech as Speaker of the House.
The incoming speaker will direct people to visit the "Pledge to America" Facebook page to view the transition to the GOP-controlled House.
"This kind of streaming and real-time interaction is not only unprecedented for the House, it's helping to set the tone for a new majority that will continue to find new ways to listen to and better represent the American people," said Nick Schaper, Boehner's director of digital media.

Rubio is a super star but in terms of votes alone, he's not going to be that much of an improvement over LeMeiux (who was a pretty solid vote). Rubio's big contributions will come off the floor and on TV and other media.

House Democrats are closely watching who votes against Rep. Nancy Pelosi during the floor session that officially taps the next speaker of the House — a roll call that may show some lingering anti-Pelosi sentiment among a handful of Democrats.
Democratic insiders predict roughly a dozen Democratic votes against Pelosi — but that number could grow. Another question is whether any — and if so, how many – Democrats cross over to vote for the Republican rules package that will be also be debated in the opening session of the 112th Congress.
In 1997, at the start of the 105th Congress, nine Republicans opposed the reelection of former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) by voting “present” or supporting other candidates. Gingrich was reelected, but the vote demonstrated growing unhappiness with the Georgia Republican in GOP ranks. Gingrich stepped down as speaker and retiring in 1998, following Republican losses in the mid-term elections.
So, see where the Big P slots in here:
Newt's against vote: 9
Predicted: 12
Dem Cacus Vote against Pelosi: 43

Is this group of Republicans really trying to suggest that they care more deeply about the Constitution than anyone else and will follow it more closely?
In any case, it is a presumptuous and self-righteous act, suggesting that they alone understand the true meaning of a text that the founders wisely left open to generations of reinterpretation. Certainly the Republican leadership is not trying to suggest that African-Americans still be counted as three-fifths of a person.

Memo to the NYT - that compromise was enacted to limit the South's representation in Congress. And that issue was corrected properly by the Thirteen Amendment to the Constitution. Reinterpretation of the Constitution is to be done via the Amendment process, not by liberal activist courts.

The three fifths clause was an antislavery clause but you would have to study history a little to know that so the writers ignorance is understandable.
Free blacks in every state were considered a whole person for representation. Only slaves were counted as 3/5s thus reducing the slave states power in congress.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 1 — During her first 100 hours as House speaker, Nancy Pelosi has vowed, she will sweep an aggressive legislative agenda through the newly Democratic-controlled House.
But first comes Pelosi-palooza.
In a three-day stretch of whirlwind events beginning on Wednesday, Mrs. Pelosi will celebrate her heritage (at the Italian Embassy), her faith (in a Roman Catholic Mass), her education (at Trinity College), her childhood (in Baltimore) and her current home (in a tribute by the singer Tony Bennett, of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” fame).
She will embrace her status as the first female House speaker with a tea for women. She will highlight her pull among Democrats with a $1,000-per-person fund-raising concert. And she will welcome visitors to the halls of Congress in an open-house tour.
Funny how the Times reviled in "Pelosi-palooza"

Miss'80sBaby at 56 - The Constitution never stated that African-Americans would be counted as three-fifths of a person. In fact the Constitution does not mention blacks, or Negroes at all. Slaves were counted as three-fifths for purposes of calculating representation. And the slave holders would have loved to have them counted as a full person. In fact if South Caroina could have worked it to have slaves counted as two or three persons they would have jumped at the chance.
The anti-slavery folks (mostly in the Northern and Mid_Atlantic states) were pushing to have slaves not count at all for figuring congressional representation. This would have decimated the house delegations in many southern states. Take a look at the map that was posted in the ONT the other night. That is the situation in the mid 1800's but even in 1780 parts of eastern South Carolina were majority slave.

155 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
AWESOME!

Somehow this fits today:
"And then there is the Tenth Commandment. 'Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.' The Ten Commandments are God's basic rules about how we should live — a brief list of sacred obligations and solemn moral precepts.
The first nine Commandments concern theological principles and social law. But then, right at the end, is 'Don't envy your buddy's cow.' How did that make the top ten? What's it doing there? Why would God, with just ten things to tell Moses, choose as one of those things jealousy about the starter mansion with in-ground pool next door?
Yet think how important the Tenth Commandment is to a community, to a nation, indeed to a presidential election. If you want a mule, if you want a pot roast, if you want a cleaning lady, don't be a jerk and whine about what the people across the street have — go get your own.
The Tenth Commandment sends a message to all the jerks who want redistribution of wealth, higher taxes, more government programs, more government regulation, more government, less free enterprise, and less freedom. And the message is clear and concise: Go to hell." -- P.J. O'Rourke

Black is the wind on the heels of the gifted
Four sworn to vengeance, see the hate in our eyes
Called by the gods and given a sign
Onward pounding into glory ride
Sign of the hammer, be my guide
Final warning all stand aside
Sign of the hammer, it's my time
Pounding, pounding, we are back from the dead
Those who denied us are delivered instead
Into the hands of four sworn to ride
Now the people will triumph and live by the sign
Onward pounding into glory ride
Sign of the hammer, be my guide
