Horrifying: 7.4 Quake Hits Japan; Tsunami Expected
— Ace

Update: I thought the quake had been downgraded to a 7.1. Not so, says Mogerel -- there was both a 7.4 and a 7.1.

Although I noted that commenters had seen forecasts of 50 cm waves, the article cited at Hot Air says they could be up to two meters/six feet.

...

At Hot Air. What a terrible blow that would be.

Looking for positive spin... Several of the quakes I've followed were initially rated as more powerful than later measurements showed them to be. I think I remember the initial read on the San Diego/Mexicali quake of April 2010 was initially measured at 8+, but turned out to be 7.2. So maybe this isn't as bad as it sounds.

Update: Commenters say the "tsunami" is predicted to be a 2 foot surge-- compare that to the 30 foot that destroyed Northern Japan.

So this is looking inconvenient and distressing, but not heartbreaking and fatal.

It does look like the quake is being downgraded in power, as I'd hoped.

16 There's not much left to fall down. It's the tsunami they have to worry about. I would assume that it has already hit? Even a 1 meter wave will cause extensive damage. Then again, there is not much left that hasn't been already destroyed. Poor Japan.

19 Let's give the Japanese credit: they are some of the best prepared people on earth. Their buildings are beautifully designed to withstand "normal" earthquakes, and their disaster planning (with the obvious exception of TEPCO) is pretty damned good.

This is 1/100 the energy of the big one. They will handle it.

61 DOOM! on a local level.

In a report filed in November 2008, The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that a serious earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone could result in "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States," further predicting "widespread and catastrophic" damage across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and particularly Tennessee, where a 7.7 magnitude quake or greater would cause damage to tens of thousands of structures affecting water distribution, transportation systems, and other vital infrastructure. The earthquake is expected to also result in many thousands of fatalities, with more than 4,000 of the fatalities expected in Memphis alone.

According to some scientists, however, that is nothing compared to what an 8.0 earthquake could do to the New Madrid Region. An earthquake of that size on the New Madrid Fault would destroy 60 percent of Memphis, killing tens of thousands and causing over $50 billion dollars in property damage in the city alone.

When Cantor said the Dems didn't do their job when they should have, the Rs cheered and the Dems booed, with opposite reactions when Hoyer said the Dems always did their jobs when Bush was in office. 88 So, they only failed to do their duty for Jug-Ears?

He didn't think of that, only a cheat-shot at the Tea Party-- loudly rebuked by the House Rs-- and stated that Obama was elected. So they didn't shutdown the govt under Bush because Bush was legitimately elected, so it's wrong for the Rs to do the same thing because Obama was also legitimately elected. Or something.

Having lived through several large earthquakes in California I know that the emotional trauma is worse than the physical. - I have never been subjected to a tsunami on top of that.  My prayers go to the people of Japan ~ no riots, no looting - God bless their culture and values.  I doubt that if this happened to the state of California that you would see the same.

Lay off of people named Jake - my son has that name and he is a wonderful human being.  Flame this asshole for what he writes - not what his name is.

Question - what is the US doing for Japan?  I've read several stories of our 7th fleet taking and delivering donations out of their own pocket - how about our stupid government?   Is Japan less worthy than Haiti?

Not so:

Japan's National Police Agency acknowledged the fact there has been some looting, but does not yet have the data for how severe it is.

Thanks for the info and I will keep checking on reports.  however, having also lived the Rodney King riots - Japan is still complimented on their culture and values.  Nothing like driving home and watching the banks, DMV, local stores burning while so called people are running down the streets carrying steroes, tvs, etc. while laughing....disgusting.

Did someone tell Joe Biden about the internets again?  jeezus.

As trolls go, you're about a 3.  Look, hippie, if you're gonna troll at least try to be witty or funny.  You're just, well, pathetic.

You see, you don't understand the secret plan - we are wiping out the rebels to save them. Sssssh - it's a secret.

Exactly!  And you can keep the doctor you have and you have to pass the bill to see what's in it.  So glad someone understands.

190 One should remember that many of those traits we find admirable in Japanese culture under these circumstances become glaring weaknesses under different circumstances.

Yeah, selflessness, sense of community, empathy...I can see where those would be detrimental.

Wait, no, actually I can't.

193 Look, if you populated Japan with the walmart crowd and visited upon them the same horrors that have recently occurred, you'd have mass riots, looting, cannibalism and a lot of fat people running thither and yon flailing their fat assed arms and falling into mud puddles while screaming "save me!"

Don't forget a near blind willingness to do as they're told by a military dictatorship. How could that go wrong for them?

Jake, Jake, Jake.  Cancer does already run rampant in my family, but thanks for the well-wishes on that account!

By the way, I dug up your Mom's grave and sold her body to the Traveling Necrophiliac Enthusiasts Guild, Local 69, for a pack of beef sticks and a six pack o' suds.  She was embalmed, so I don't think they'll end up eating her (well . . . .), but that's about all they'll not be likely to do to her.

Pretty sure there hasn't been a military dictatorship in Japan in the last oh... 75 years?

I'm late and don't know if it hit or not, but a 2' tsunami which picks up rubble from already destroyed buildings and carries it inland is a destructive force. That is, in the low-lying areas where it can move inland.

Ever been knocked off your feet while standing in the surf? Try it with 2x4s hitting you in the knees.

Yeah, we fought a war and lost rivers of American blood to get there.  We are still there. The Japanese have not changed. They are still certain of their cultural and racial superiority. And they still do as they are told by authority figures. If you think they are different now you are kidding yourself. Under the right circumstances, you will find they are still Japanese, and had the same cultural traits pre WW II, when they beat, tortured, and starved prisoners to death, and used Chinese prisoners in bomb experiments. The same culture that made women of other cultures service their troops. Yeah, I'm full of admiration for the Japanese, but not because they are such nice, cultured, law abiding people.

202 For what it's worth, the USGS has only ONE quake listed, and according to the Evil Fox News, tsunami warning has been lifted.

So Japan catches sort-of a break?  If getting hammered by another major quake is status quo.

Good times for geologists, but not so good for anyone else.

204 Day 3 of the lefty troll/moby invasion.

I should not be surprised that the lefty's first thought when faced with news of another earthquake inflicting suffering on the people of Japan is to denigrate gays and black people in a variety of insults.

Seems pretty par for the course for liberals.

Oh, well, I guess his Mom called him down for lunch.

My sister-in-law's folks live about 30 miles from Sendai. They definitely felt the quake but no real damage. Just had to give away food from the grocery they own due to power blackouts.

Worse off were her aunt and an uncle who live in Sendai. She lives on high ground and is okay; he came home from a doctor's appointment to find his house completely gone.

Prayers to them all.
