— DrewM It's not going away anytime soon.
Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted Thursday to subpoena the White House for all internal communications related to the failed solar company Solyndra,...
“I regret that we have reached this point,” Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), the chairman of the committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee and the GOP’s pointman on the Solyndra investigation, said Thursday. “At this point in time, I am not confident that we will have a good faith response from the White House without issuing a subpoena.”
“Sometimes, in the course of an investigation, we find ourselves unable to secure necessary evidence,” full committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) said. “House Rules expressly give us the power of subpoena to compel cooperation in these instances. It is a tool we use sparingly and only as a last resort. Today, it is our last resort.”
Yesterday, the Department of Energy's Inspector General testified before the committee about the massive waste and fraud that went on as part of Obama's Green Energy "stimulus".
He added that the under-resourced department faced a series of logistical obstacles in delivering money to companies such as Solyndra, which filed for bankruptcy in September after receiving a $528-million government loan."The concept of 'shovel-ready' projects was not realized, nor, as we now have confirmed, was it a realistic expectation," Friedman said.
Even after department employees strained to quickly dispense loans that were not properly documented, Friedman said only 45% of the money allotted to DOE under the stimulus law has been spent. He attributed the inefficiency and slowness of loan distribution to a "diverse, complex, and often asymmetrical set of stakeholders," which included state and local officials, contractors and businesses.
Friedman said he could not comment specifically on the ongoing Solyndra investigation, but did say his office has launched more than 100 investigations of stimulus-funded companies that have recovered $2.3 million and resulted in five criminal prosecutions.
So clearly what he need is more wasteful "stimulus". It's what God would want.

Oh, but a subpoena, that will make them respond in good faith.

I hate to tell you Mr.Stearns, but you're not going to get a "good faith" response from this White House WITH a subpoena either.
"Good faith" is a concept that is totally foreign to this administration.

Well, probably not, but there's not much else Congress can do. On the other hand, if they get a bunch of redacted documents like the Oversight Committee did with the F&F documents, they can (and probably will) hold DoJ and DoE in contempt of Congress.
Which won't do much either, but what else can they really do? There really is no law for the lawless- especially when they're the government.

No mention of e-verify at all. But that could be what they are alluding to when they say "other system provided by Dept of Homeland Security".
The thing that bothers me about this bill is the only punishment in it goes to the "immigrant" and not the employer. In addition, there is no funding for implementation or to fix e-verify if that is what they are talking about. IOW, it is another damn "border fence" that will never get built or fixed and it will never work.
Perry doesn't like e-verify because it is a POS that does not work. Even Newt said it was too broken to use. Romney likes it though.
BTW, there is another bill that has been voted out of committee that Smith has signed on to that raises the number of allowed "immigrants".
As for "preemption" once a federal law goes into effect it automatically "preempts" any State law that conflicts.

Rember that it only takes a majority vote on this frakin' committee to approve the budget numbers and congress must "rake it or leave it" and if they "leave it they automatically cut budgets for the military and SS/Medicare. If there is a single occupation which lends itself more to corruption than "politician," I don't know what it is.
Which, of course, is another reason for Term Limits. And a constitutional ban on "political families" (I'm sorry, I liked GWB, but I think the fact his father was President should have excluded him. Heck, I think the fact that his brother had been president should have excluded Ted Kennedy from being a Senator).

It actually does more than override any conflicting requirements. It seems to prevent states from having any verification requirements:
SEC. 6. PREEMPTION. Section 274A(h)(2) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1324a(h)(2)) is amended to read as follows: `(2) PREEMPTION- The provisions of this section preempt any State or local law, ordinance, policy, or rule, including any criminal or civil fine or penalty structure, insofar as they may now or hereafter relate to the hiring, continued employment, or status verification for employment eligibility purposes, of unauthorized aliens. A State, locality, municipality, or political subdivision may exercise its authority over business licensing and similar laws as a penalty for failure to use the verification system described in subsection (d) to verify employment eligibility when and as required under subsection (b).'.

Nothing is perfect. And I don't mean at all levels. I don't think- for instance- that GWB should have been barred from being the Governor of Texas. I don't think that Ted Kennedy being a Senator should have barred any other Kennedy from seeking that same office (or from being a Rep)- perhaps with the exception they shouldn't be able to a federal level office at the same time.
But I do think that political families breed corruption almost as surely as lawyers (usually for the affected industry) writing law.

Perhaps.
I was responding to your telling me basically to shut the fuck up.
Unlike you Jwest....I don't crow about 'not being emotional' while hypocritically being emotional in doing so. ....So I will readily admit to succumbing to emotion when it comes to politics.
When it comes to the survival of our beloved Country and my family....I reserve the right to be emotional. But there is a pragmatism to that emotion, borne out of survival.
But when it comes to parroting the liberal phrases that have been constructed to do harm to our Republic....I will always call that out when I see that being done.

In Japan the corporations ARE the government, so yes they have a "corporatist" government. But it still has nothing to do with capitalism.
We have never had a "corporatist" government here. It has always been what was called the "American System" in which one segment of the population was taxes to build infrastructure for another segment using "cronies" of the elites who were currently in power.
In other words it was gross corruption and the only way to keep it small was to keep government small and to limit the power of one party over the others.
Unfortunately we lost that in 1861.

Ummm... yes, it is. First- as already mentioned- it's a stupid phrase. When you replace it with "Corruption" or "Graft" it doesn't sound nearly so "not all bad," does it? If (to use your example) Toyota or Honda could not compete without government subsidies, they should have been driven out of the market.
And, yes, that pre-supposes that the American Auto-Makers weren't also being helped by Cronyism (which they probably were).

Japan's government is almost totally corrupt. Still doesn't mean that their car manufacturers don't deliver a good product, even though that corruption is finally catching up to them and their sales are waning.
However, if a U.S. business of the elite provides a value product in spite the political implications, it's still a win-win proposition for us, even if it's part of the "Brother-in-law Effect" of a politician.

161 RioBravo,
If I may interject.....I think it has something to do the fact that E-Verify simply uses the same system to 'check' for fraud that the fraudsters have used to commit the fraud. ....Which is why simply checking to see if a SocSec number exists, doesn't give an accurate read on whether the person using that number is a legal citizen.

Actually, I do. Sorry, but given the epic levels of corruption political dynasties are wreaking, we really need to go zero tolerance.
Full disclosure: When I was younger, I had serious troubles working in my field in this region because of conflict of interest issues that effectively locked me out from most of the firms in this area. It was crippling, but I eventually found employment in other areas. My sympathy for family members of political types who would lose their cash cow positions is, predictably, nil as a result.

Excerpt:
E-Verify is a federal program that uses Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases to check employment eligibility. Employers enter employee identity information and the system confirms it or a “tentative nonconfirmation” (TNC) notice is issued. That worker then has eight days to contest the notice with Social Security or Homeland Security. If the worker does not contest the result, the business must fire that employee or risk violating federal law.
In theory, punching in a name and Social Security number to verify work authorization sounds efficient. In practice, the system is problematic.
First, the system relies solely on databases. Errors that lead to false positives and negatives are unavoidable. E-Verify can’t identify folks who present counterfeit or stolen documents. If a person presents “good documents,” he or she is cleared for employment.
More troubling are the false negatives. E-Verify misidentifies U.S. citizens and legal workers as TNCs or even “final nonconfirmations” because of errors in databases. It can take months to get personal information corrected.
The Immigration and Policy Center estimates that as many as 104,495 U.S. citizens and lawful immigrant workers in North Carolina could be misidentified through E-Verify

We've only owned a couple of cars - Saturn (lasted about 7 years 'til it was in a wreck), Toyota (lasted 10 years 'til it was in a wreck), and now a VW (almost 4 yrs) and Jeep (1 yr). We've been lucky with all of them (so far), but that Toyota (RAV4) was a great little car. It really was solidly built and even the interior trim stayed in great shape. I'd be hesitant to buy a Honda - even the new ones seem cheap.

American cars have greatly closed that gap. CR reports in family sedans reliability (based on previous models) #1 is Ford Fusion Hybrid, #2 Chrysler 200. Reliability compares well across all categories. If you want something anecdotal my company has a Jeep with 200K on it, original engine, still kicking.

...Well-known Japanese companies routinely hire gangsters to rough up shareholders who ask embarrassing questions at company meetings. Even Japan's "convoy system" (often denounced as a devilish plot to destroy foreign competitors), in which weaker exporting firms are propped up by stronger, is merely ethno-economics in action in a multi-ethnic world marketplace. The current shoring up of insolvent banks with taxpayers' money is ethno-economics too. After all, the bad loans were made by Japanese to other Japanese, so the whole family has to help repair the damage -- like repaying a brother's debts.
I'll keep my CTS. At least I'm financing American crooks.

Cain needed to come out with all the facts and a consistent story from the beginning. He blew it. We all know that “sexual harassment” claims can be false or overblown, but whatever he did or didn’t do isn’t the big problem. He just didn’t handle the situation properly.
Yes, itÂ’s unfair treatment that the republican receive in the press, but thatÂ’s just the way it is right now. We need candidates who can deal with it. Cain canÂ’t.

Ummm... qualified 'yes?' This is something he's going to have to be able to deal with. GW was a thoroughly honorable man, but had to deal with a scandal or two. He didn't do super well, but he did better than Cain.
And as Glenn Beck pointed out earlier: if Cain did do some questionable things almost a decade ago then find out if he's reformed or not.
This has little to do with it. Certainly if he did something bad, that's a problem, but the current problem IS his handling of the situation. It's been clumsy and obfuscatory. And when obfuscating didn't work, he decided to point the finger at his preferred political rival (without any proof that I've seen, by the way) to attempt to deflect from the scandal itself. (Really, that smacks of the Clintons' "Vast, Right-Wing Conspiracy." Not in tin-foil hattary, but in 'pay no attention to the allegations, pay attention to those making them.')
I'll say again- based on what we KNOW it looks like there is no "there" there. On the other hand, if there was no "there" there, I would expect Mr. Cain to have been more straightforward about the issue from the beginning.
Of couse, this line of thinking could apply to the anybody but Romney crowd too.
It could- if we were willing to forgo the idea that "actions speak louder than words." The facts of Romneys actions are what make him unacceptable- it's just that his "stop me when you've heard something you like" doesn't help.
