— rdbrewer The vote total was 234-190. It's not expected to get through the Senate, I guess, but hey, it's a plan. In related news, Senator DeMint says that Obama is only backing the "gang of six" plan because the GOP is on the move:
"I don't know enough about the Gang of Six proposal, but I do know the only reason the president is stepping up and saying he might support this is that Republicans are now on the offense with a plan that would increase the debt limit in a way that Moody's and S&P would recognize as credible long-term deficit reduction," DeMint said Tuesday on Fox Business Network.. . .
"There is only one proposal that actually is written that will be voted on, and that is the ‘cut, cap and balance’ proposal," DeMint said.
I don't know enough about the gang of six proposal either. But from Drew's post earlier today, it seems a little vague, a little aspirational--a little long on promise and short on specifics. And how many times has the GOP been lead down the primrose path on promised future spending cuts? Reagan and Bush 41, from what I can recall. I'm sure there are others. Because of this, I'm leaning toward not liking it, and I'm starting to wonder whether Senator Coburn deserves the name "Dr. No." But we'll see.
Added: Representative Paul Ryan is on Fox right now, and he sounds more than a little skeptical about the gang of six plan. He doesn't like the backdoor way it miraculously appeared today. Again, it's hard to see why Senator Coburn is involved in this.

Anybody have a roll call list yet? I keep trolling the house clerk site, and the thomas loc site, but they don't seem to have it yet.
Maybe we could beg for a bump/update when a roll call becomes available?

The Senate did not have the (good) electoral carnage the House had in the 2010 elections. So the country club R Senators feel insulated. I do hope this changes in the 2012 elections and the Senate gets more of what the House got in 2010.

Eric Cantor needs to say this:
"The House's plan is about solving a serious problem. The Senate's plan is about pretending to solve a serious problem
The House Republicans will not participate in pretending to solve serious problems."
Then let the Senate Republicans vote.

The gang of six plan has fewer pages to it than it has member who wrote it: five
There is no way a real, grown-up federal budget fits in five pages.
therefore, the Ryan budget still has the unimpeachable advantage of being a real actual budget, and not just smoke you blew up my ass.

Oh I do so love the legitimate theater!
Well, now that that's done with, how about passing the real compromise between the Democrats and the Republican leadership, preferably at the last minute in the middle of the night, without giving people a chance to review the numbers until after the deed is done?
Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at July 19, 2011 05:17 PM (EeYDk)
Consider also the possibility that the so-called "Gang of Six" may have also agreed to work to get the "Cut, cap and balance" bill to the floor of the Senate in exchange for pushing their pet bill.
Doesn't mean that the House "Cut, cap and balance" bill will pass the Senate, but getting it to the floor and allowing debate is a small win for the Republicans. Getting the Senate to openly vote it down and then explain WHY to the people means something. It they never bring it to the floor (which is what happened to the Republican House budget), it's almost like it never happened.
I've listened to Coburn for too long to think he would give up on his most basic principles for a handful of magic beans.

I read that shitpaper called the Gang of Six whatever.
Pathetic.
Just as one example of its stupidity, it fully retains the Earned Income Tax Credit - the very same fucking thing that eliminates millions of Americans from ever paying a dime of Federal Income Taxes, pushing the burden onto the other 49% and thus creating the welfare mentality that elected that motherless communist fuck to the White House.
And the spending cuts? All bullshit.

The Dims have played the GOP, yet again. The GOP naively waits for either Obama or the Sen Dims to provide a plan. The Sen Dems are dithering. Obama is running out the clock. All while the gentlemen from the GOP, expect the Dims are acting in good faith.
Jeez. They just fell for this 3 months ago (continuing budget resolution). The Dims stall, the GOP holds back, the clock strikes 11, no time for a CBO score, and just sign something. Not 60 or even $38 billion in savings. $352 million.
What's the correct term. Tools? Stools?

Look, I'm all for tax simplification and if it's a net tax cut I'm OK with it, but what I would do is make sure that all spending cuts are now and tax increases...do not start until 2013.
Yes, the Democrats could filibuster repeal (as Ace pointed out to me), but the GOP candidate will run on repealing these tax increases and a bunch of GOP Senators will be elected in 2012.
Having a ticking tax bomb sitting right after the new president and Congress take office is a great motivator. Look, this crap is all about 10 year plans, so let's just do the tax stuff starting in about 19 months.

A (very nice) liberal commented here a while back when the Weiner thing just got started and said something like, "He may be a jerk, but you would want him on your side."
My response was, "Not as a Congressman." A pundit, maybe, but I'd cringe at having somebody that relentlessly demagogic as an actual elected official.
Let's try to think of who on the right is anything like Weiner or DWS. Coulter? Levin? Even Breitbart entertains the other side and will concede a point once in a while as long as the opponent isn't being a partisan creep.
Barney Frank really started the whole unrelenting asshole Congressman schtick, but at least he's somewhat smart and has some reliable tricks, "Can I finish pwease?" But Weiner, DWS and even worse, Grayson are not only odious but they're pathetic to boot.

To offer another POV, I find it hard to believe that Coburn doesn't have an ulterior motive. His entire history in the Senate defies the idea that he's making a deal now just for being "pals", and gamesmanship is far more important in the Senate than the House, due to the 60% requirement. If he does make a deal, then my progress towards complete disillusionment will be complete. I'll be all Eeyore, all the time.
