Huntsman: Conservation is Conservative
— Gabriel Malor

Yesterday presidential candidate Jon Huntsman spoke to the enviroconservative group 'Republicans for Environmental Protection.' Huntsman was vague on specifics, but he sounded an awful lot like he was on the other side of this issue from most Republicans:

"Conservation is conservative."

"We will be judged by how well we were stewards of those (natural) resources," said Huntsman, a veteran of three Republican administrations who until this spring was President Barack Obama's ambassador to China.

"Conservation is conservative. I'm not ashamed to be a conservationist. I also believe that science should be driving our discussions on climate change," he added.

These aren't controversial remarks. If Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, Rick Perry and said them, we probably wouldn't think much of it. If they said they want science to drive the "climate change" discussion we would all hear a clear subtext: "Real science, not the ever-collapsing and ever-rebutted "science" of alarmists whose models do not actually model reality."

But for a candidate who already has the far Left of the Republican field staked out, a demand to respect "the science" sound an awful lot like what we hear every day from global warming researchers facing investigations for scientific misconduct. It's not likely to help Huntsman pick up votes. Which leads one to wonder why he said it.

Thanks to rdbrewer.

By cluttering up the field with more than a dozen candidates, the results will be greatly skewed by dilution.....

16 eh.... I think we can get this guy out of the race by harping on other things. But mainly, if we just stop talking about him he will go away. the conservationist bit... I consider myself a conservationist also, I learned environmental stewardship in Boy Scouts, and I think no one would ever mistake me for a global warming alarmist. I actually think that world specifically stands out from something like say "environmentalist". generally when I hear someone refer to them selves as a conservationist, they are engaged in sane conversation as opposed to hysterical fear mongering the AGW types are usually spouting.

Saw a link on Drudge yesterday, that now NASA has come up with research showing global warming is crap.  Just last year, NASA's scientists were agreeing with the global warming hoax.

Start looking for all those scientists who went along with the scam, to now all of a sudden start discovering "new" research that refutes it, to cover their asses.

Yeah, conservationism doesn't have the same negative connotation for me as environmentalism.  OTOH, what does Huntsman think the Federal government's role is in that?  Or government's role in general?

I prefer the model where you have private, local/regional conservancy groups.  Let people in the communities prioritize conservation versus development.

35 I Said it back when The Won took office and conscripted this punk as an ambassador, I won't, but if you doubt, you can look it up, it was either under Douglas, or Wicked, most likely Douglas.

There was talk about how Huntsman was expanding his foreign policy cred's for a 2012 run against Obama.   Anyone who thought that makes sense is FUCKING RETARDED!  Well in 1862 I wanted to be the commanding general of union forces, so I became Burnsides aide de camp.

36 I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Huntsman that while I wouldn't vote for him, he's probably a decent and honest guy.  Because there is no way anyone could possibly be this bad at being a pandering douchebag.  Every poli sci freshman knows what direction you have to run to win the Republican nomination, and he isn't doing it.

Ergo, he these are his real beliefs and he's just throwing it out there and if it hurts him, so be it. That makes me respect the guy a little bit.  I just can't work up a white hot hate for Huntsman like I can for some tool bag that pretends to be the next coming of Barry Goldwater (old Barry, not post-wife dying off the rails Barry) and then gets elected and proceeds to fuck us with something like TARP.

41 36 I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Huntsman that while I wouldn't vote for him, he's probably a decent and honest guy.

When his name first floated, I gave him the benefit of the doubt.  But the more I read about him - and spoke with my fellow Utahns (I moved here last summer) - the more convinced I become that he's a raging asshat.  Huntsman Sr. is, by all accounts, a great man.  Junior - and his mom - has a reputation as being a spiteful piece of work.

This run is about two things: an attempt to hurt Mitt, whom he loathes, and a gambit for a VP slot.  The guy's been appointed to virtually every job he's held (and one could make the case that the governorship was practically handed to him given his family connections).  That's his pattern.

45 Well, conservation is conservative. I never understood how it is that Republicans are tarred with the whole environment hating thing. Even a dog knows not to shit in his own bed. But he has to shit somewhere. I don't want poisoned water or smoky air but I also don't want to crawl into a hole and die because breathing makes carbon dioxide. I guess the best way to put it is that I don't hate the environment, I hate environmentalists. Because Greens are commies.

The point was made above that, if it were Christie or someone well known as a conservative, it wouldn't be an issue.  Since Huntsman is a RINO, it's just a dog-whistle to independents and Dems.

Myself, I'm a John Muir/Teddy Roosevelt conservationist.  I'm not an environmentalist.  There's a difference.

Odds are better than even that Huntsman is an environmentalist - thereby disqualifying him as a serious "conservtive" contender.

It is so typical of you Republicans that you ignore the obvious warming of the earth (just look around and check your thermometers!) and instead fight against all of those people trying to protect YOU from yourselves.

98 "It's not likely to help Huntsman pick up votes. Which leads one to wonder why he said it." he could be an idiot. though he might be using the standard GOP game plan of keep running until it's your turn.

104 The congressional GOP should be screaming in every microphone they see about the growth number. This is a free bat with wich to assault the left. Will they? Fuck no.

Hay, long game, man. And cocktail parties. And quit rocking the boat.

"President Asshat to speak in an hour."

Will there be a live blog of this momentous spew of verbal confetti?

Please, please say yes as I am at work.

110 I have no idea what Huntsman looks like. In the line-up of RINO's a photo of orange Crist will do. I find it hilarious and it does not get old, rdbrewer.

No live blogging, but I'll be taking a crap in a few minutes. I'll send you a picture. That should be an excellent representation of whatever spews from JEF's mouth.

114 President Asshat to speak in an hour.

Great. The markets ought to love that.

In two minutes of trading the S&P is down one percent, gold up $17.

117 Huntsman's old man made all the dough, and this cretin just cruises around looking for something to do. If there is anything I hate more than a rich moralizer, I can't think what it might be. And, he has no sense of humor either! What an asshole.

Posted by: MTF at July 29, 2011 05:49 AM (RMYrx)

118 If you're going to post about that idiot Huntsman, for cryin' out loud, use a picture of Huntsman, will ya? Why must we look at that equal tower of intellect Charlie Crist????

121 "Conservation is conservative. I'm not ashamed to be a conservationist. I also believe that science should be driving our discussions on climate change," he added.

He's right.

Conservation is conservative.

But he's not talking to a bunch of conservationists about conservation.

He's talking to a bunch of environmentalists about environmentalism.

And environmentalism is not conservative.

122 Judgment will come, one way or the other. I'll either be dirt, or in heaven, or in hell, soaking my fiery balls in two cups of jello; and no matter which of the three, I won't give a damn about whether I used an extra 1000 gallons of gasoline or burned an additional 1million pounds of coal in my lifetime. Develop this countries energy resources, all of them, according to the markets.

Posted by: observer at July 29, 2011 07:02 AM (A9AvX)

124 Meh--just another pretty face.  And he doesn't even have the equipment to be interesting--unless you are Andrew Sullivan or Barney Frank.

125 I dont see too good...is that Charlie Crist up there??

Posted by: MD at July 29, 2011 08:02 AM (AGPJz)

126 No, MD, it's that senior partner guy from Mad Men who was screwing Joan the redheaded senior secretary. Don't you get AMC on your cable service?

Posted by: andycanuck at July 29, 2011 08:12 AM (oUG6f)

127 No, I'm not a campaign staffer. I think Huntsman is a Democrat backed RINO who is to the left of Romney.

And Crist, well Crist is the epitome of egotistic self centered douche who thinks he's the savior of the party (which ever one he happens to claim allegiance to) and doesn't even TRY to act like a RINO. He's like a RINO's RINO.

It just sets my teeth on edge to see this up there represented as Huntsman. Not that I care if it hurts them politically (how could it).

I get the joke, I really do. I have no idea why it bugs me so much.

Oh well.

Touche' mon ami.
