Hurricane Irene Morning Update (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Good morning, Morons. As before, I'm tmi3rd, and we're live at Moron Central's Weather Desk, which this morning means hanging out with tmi4th and having just changed the overnight Diaper Of Doom.

So let's get you up to date with this morning's advisory and some other little tidbits of info. More below the fold... POBrienHurricane.jpg

I figured we'd start with a Hurricane from Pat O'Brien's in the French Quarter... the good kind of hurricane.

1 ounce fresh lemon juice

4 ounces dark rum

4 ounces passion fruit syrup

Crushed ice

Orange slice

1 maraschino cherry

In a cocktail shaker, add lemon juice, rum, passion fruit syrup, and crushed ice; shake vigorously for 1 to 2 minutes and then strain into a tall glass or hurricane glass. Garnish with orange slice and maraschino cherry.

Makes 1 serving. (from homebakedmemories.com)

Now to the actual storm...

5-day.gif

Via wunderground.com, that's your tracking map and its 5-day forecast. Next advisory is at 11 AM EDT (so by the time this gets up, we'll have a new advisory to talk about), but let's talk about what we've got.

Motion right now is due north at 12 mph. The storm, no longer being beaten up by the Bahamas, should undergo some decent strengthening and is anticipated to be a borderline Category 3 storm by the time it makes landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina sometime in the next 36 hours.

At the moment, the figuring is that it will hit somewhere in New England within 60 hours, and where exactly is a good question.

Note that this is WILDLY different than last night, where we were assuming it would go ashore at Wilmington, NC. So why the rather sizable change in forecast?

warning.jpg

We get now into the nitty-gritty of modeling now, and you can point some of this stuff out to your neighborhood AGW zealots, too. The computer models used to predict our daily weather use very long mathematical equations called algorithms. For example, one that is on display at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO, is two pages long of single-spaced eight-point type, and every character is a variable. Every variable is a correction. If you have two pages of corrections, you're necessarily going to have a large margin for error.

So what? Well, what that means is that within twenty-four hours, we have a fairly good idea of what stuff should do, but it doesn't even always get that right. Forty-eight hours out, it gets sketchier, seventy-two hours out, we're still reasonably confident, and beyond that, it's educated guesswork.

Now, the meteorologists in the US are as good as you're going to find anywhere on Earth. Getting a BS in meteorology is brutal, and is essentially a degree in engineering with an atmospheric emphasis. That said, they can only work with the tools they're given. Computer modeling doesn't have the resolution to differentiate between ocean and land (unless the land is a mountain), and there are different models used for tropical weather, winter weather, et cetera... the forecast track you see on TV or even in the above model is a weighted average and best guess based on the specific emphasis of several individual models (one will be a tropical model, another one a global model, a third an East Coast-specific model, and so forth).

So is it BS? No, not at all- it's just limited by our ability to describe these interactions mathematically, and there are large gaps in our knowledge. With what the weather guys know, they do a pretty credible job. That said, it's actually much easier to figure out what a storm will do once it's actually interacted with land. Then, you can use local models that are higher-resolution and more specific to that neck of the woods.

Now, let's remember that the discussion of landfall means the interaction of the center of circulation with land. This storm is enormous, as the satellite shot shows...

Irene sat.jpg

Basically, if you're anywhere along the Eastern Seaboard from Chesapeake Bay
north through the Canadian Maritimes, you're going to see something from the storm. The figuring now is that the center of circulation will go ashore somewhere near where NJ, NY, and CT meet up. This is, of course, not good news for anyone in that area.

That is, of course, subject to change, so let's do our Daddy-told-you reminders...

1) If you're leaning toward leaving, go early. Don't wait. Traffic will SUCK- ask any of us from the Gulf Coast what evacuation traffic is like. You can always come back if and when the storm doesn't do what we tell it to do.

2) Don't forget your pets, your folks, bring cash, gas up the car, bring extra non-perishable food, bring medications, and prepare for being gone as much as a week. It usually doesn't work that way, but...

Oh yeah- if you're getting out, do an idiot check to make sure all your appliances are turned off. We had a number of fires post-Katrina from appliances cutting loose.

That's it for the moment. The new advisory should be out momentarily, of course, and we'll try to keep you updated from the Moron Central Weather Desk.

Everyone stay safe!

-tmi3rd

Prediction:

If Hurricane Irene causes significant destruction on the East Coast, the media shitstorm that will follow will be highlighted by frequent comparisons of Obama's wonderful management of the crisis (no matter what he does or fails to do) and GWB's criminal mismanagement of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans (no matter the facts of what he did or didn't do).   The media is just dying to rehabilitate Obama, and they'll move heaven and earth to help him out.   A natural disaster provides just the opportunity they're looking for, and don't think that the Obama White House hasn't been planning numerous photo-ops for the President where he can look, well, Presidential.

Oh, and if it goes bad, particularly if New York City gets hit badly, you can bet that the media will suddenly rediscover that Michael Bloomberg, the NYC Mayor, is a Republican (albeit a liberal RINO).   It will be all his fault, and not the fault of the Democratic union-dominated entrenched incompetent bureaucracy in New York City government, and certainly not the fault of the One.

The MBM isn't going to remember Bloomberg is a RINO, they will be too busy comparing it to the 12/26/10 storm that gobsmacked the City and what a complete clusterfuck Bloomberg's handling of it was and bring up the issue of the alleged snowplow operators who were drinking beer on the job. Bloomberg can't handle the weather problems of NYC, he has consistently failed to respond appropriately. The Bloomberg will dutifully toss a agencies under the bus and be done with it.

79 I live on a lake, the ground is already saturated from lots of rain this month in north Jersey.  I'm surrounded by BIG trees, my house is old.

There are two massive oaks next door to me; A live oak out front and a water oak in the back. When a storm brushes past here I go to a hotel. Those water oaks can be perfectly healthy and still come crashing down when the ground becomes too saturated. Other than the trees, my old house has survived more than one direct hit. Still, I do not want to be in the house if a tree comes down on it.

Why give them the warning?  I figure the first couple of bodies lying out in the street with bullet holes ought to warn off all the rest.  And you save the cost of plywood and paint.

85 Always do.  We can always charge the iStuff from the car if the power is out for too long.  The wife without internet would be an ugly sight.

Which reminds me that a cheap inverter can be a blessing when the power is out. You can plug into the car or directly to a battery. It will power a small tv and keep your phones and laptops charged.

For those of you with landline service, don't forget that your fancy phones will not work if the power is out. You will need an old-fashioned plug-in phone for that.

That was so eerie walking around this big store sans electricity. I didn't have power for about a week and a half. It was really one of those things that came out of the blue with no warning.

The effects of a storm such as this is that folks run out like crazy and spend, spend, spend. They prepare for the storm and then after the storm they spend on repairs. (Handymen will suddenly become plentiful. Watch out for scams.)

If the storm hits NY and Boston, then evil big businesses will be impacted and will spend tons on window replacements and repairs. A storm such as this will interject money into the economy.  Roofers and window replacement folks will clean up. As will landscapers, plumbers, and electricians.

And, if those idiots don't leave the barrier islands, morticians will do well too.

128 I work part time for this company: http://radiometrics.com/

These things (we're working on the "B" series) take a lot of the sport out of predicting what's going to be happening.  They measure what's going on in the atmosphere up to a 5-mile distance, horizon to horizon -- wind speeds, humidity, barometer, etc.

The downside is that the instrument costs about $150 K.
The other downside is that we may not be in business much longer, due to the first downside.

If you string these things together, you can get an annoyingly accurate assessment of what's probably going to happen, when, and how bad.

The other downside is you need to view the data from an engineering viewpoint, as opposed to a political viewpoint.

For you NE'ers preparing for the storm: Of course everyone knows to have water/drinks and food for three days. You know to have a light source and batteries. You know to have a battery powered radio or t.v. for news updates. Here are a few additional items that we Southerners have learned to add.

Not one can opener, but two. Inevitably, with only one, it will fail.

Bug repellant. Both the kind you apply to your person and a citronella candle (if safe to use)

Handi-wipes and hand sanitizer

Plastic sheeting. If your window blows, you'll want to seal it back up after the winds have passed. This will also require a method to hang it. Duct tape will work well.

Duct tape because, damnit, there's almost nothing it can't fix.

A BBQ or fireplace lighter. They are much more dependable than matches.

Clean clothes

Meds

Toilet paper and paper towels, plates, etc...

Extra water for flushing and hygiene

Pet food

If you have kids, something to keep them occupied. The XBox isn't going to cut it. Coloring books or board games will work better. Hey! Maybe they can put those unexercised reading skills to good use.

A big rubbermaid box to keep everything in.

One extra nice thing to have, if you own a car, is an inverter. With it, you can run a t.v. or small fridge or charge your laptop from your car. Just don't forget to run your car from time to time to keep the battery from running down.  Hell, if you don't own a car, you can still run an inverter to a battery via the more direct route, you just won't be able to recharge the battery.

And, after I posted, Jean reminded me that a roof tarp and nails will also come in handy.

And, after I posted, Jean reminded me that a roof tarp and nails will also come in handy.

That's always a mystery. This storm had every reason to jack up to a cat 4 but for some reason the internals weakened after the eye recycling and the meteorologists don't know why.

Back in 92, Andrew was a small cat 1 as it went into the Bahamas, but when it crossed the Strait of Florida and the Gulf Stream it was like Popeye with the spinach

Katrina was a cat 5 in the Gulf, but weakened down to a cat 3 by the time it hit the Louisiana coast

Once you get away from here, there are flood zones a plenty due to the rivers and canals. No parking decks to speak of. At least I'm not my friends who are down the shore. They're being forced to evacuate. One wanted to go down to Atlantic City for his birthday tomorrow, then decided that wasn't going to happen so he was going to throw a BBQ. Good.  Alright, thanks for asking.  Just hanging in there.  I live far enough into PA where we are probably just going to get some showers and maybe some minor wind damage from Irene.

Still, the old timers have Agnes on mind - that hurricane traveled up through here in 1973 and essentially stalled, dropping heavy rain on the area for days on end.  If you look around, you can still see locations that have the high-water mark from the Agnes flood still posted - I even think there's still a sign in Knobel's Grove somwhere.

Recreational linguist Dan Tilque did researched this topic, which was published in Word Ways in 2001. He utilized the US Geologic Survey's Geographic Names Information Service to discover that while Springfield is commonly thought of as the most prolific place name, the place name of Riverside can be found in all but four states (it does not exist in Hawaii, Alaska, Louisiana, and Oklahoma).

The runner up was Centerville in 45 states, followed by Fairview (43 states), Franklin (42), Midway (40), Fairfield (39), Pleasant Valley (39), Troy (39), Liberty (3 , and Union (3 . Springfield isn't even in the top ten (only 35 states have a Springfield).

Tilque concludes that there's no toponym in all fifty states.

I mentioned up thread (I think) that I, too, live in the 15-20 zone from the nearest beach and we were barely scraped by tropical storms a few years ago but we were without power in my part of town for 5 days. Other parts of town were down for about 9 days. And, although I live on an incline and my house had never flooded in its 70 year history, my crawlspace completely filled with water and destroyed my duct work.

No two storms are exactly alike so being prepared for the worst, and being spared, is a hell of a lot better than the reverse.

Posted by: NJRob at August 26, 2011 11:40 AM (Lh9iz)

With the wonder of living on the peninsula of Florida you can get hit from either direction. If it hits on the west coast we stay here. So have been through a few "minimal" Cat 1's. I say "minimal" as it still brings some destruction of flooding, etc. I am thinking Wilma and the 1999 Irene (which was barely a Cat 1 across the mainland, but sustained winds are just that). I remember howling wind for most of a day and night (for Irene), which you don't notice how tense it makes you until the eye passes over. Weather radio's alarms were constant with tornadoes. Fun times.

I am praying the destruction will be minimal for this Irene. May she continue to weaken.

When you make your plans, keep in mind this is a large storm. Stay safe.

Also, you step on the gas, it starts the engine and drives.  NO engine starts perfectly every time.  How long till these things start clogging up intersections because stepping on the gas doesn't start the car right away?
