— Ace "I can't believe this!" I exclaimed about something else entirely.
“After leaving the Governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago,” he said in a statement. “I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
The child was born before his 2003 run for governor.
The LATimes is vindicated here, a bit. They notoriously ran a slew of sex-problem stories about Schwarzenegger as he was challenging Gray Davis in the recall election. Many of these stories had little strong evidence to prove them, and really read like a liberal political hit, tossing out all sorts of charges against Schwarzenegger to protect their beloved Democrat.
And it was that. Of course it was that.
But it was also something else. I'm sure most people thought "Gee, there really seems to be something to all of this..." as I did.
Well, there was.
Under no circumstances would the LAT run such old gossip and thinly sourced smears against any non-Republican.
I know John Edwards was protected until it became absolutely impossible to do so any further. (Actually, they continued protecting him well after it became absolutely impossible to do so.)
And I know the media was pretty darned sure that Monica Lewinsky was a deranged stalker and there was nothing to that story and it was all just a smear and baseless innuendo and absolutely beneath them to even report. Why, exclusive, career-making scoops were spiked to protect Clinton.
(About which Matt Drudge says: Thanks for the millions of dollars, guys!)
Bill Maher is a contemptible, talentless midget jackass, but he does have a quote that I like: "All rumors are true." That's wildly overstated, of course, but it is something I think is mostly true.

Posted by: Ben at May 17, 2011 09:53 AM (wuv1c)
Normal people without the egos and sense of entitlement of the typical politician understand that both the people and the press assume that they have done and will do undignified and unethical and immoral things. They don't run for office because of this.
And that's why most of our politicians aren't normal people; they are, in a very real sense, sociopaths.

Ya know, if the media didn't immediately throw as much mud as possible at each and every candidate with an R after their name, I might be a bit more inclined to listen to them when they try to report on this sort of thing when it actually has some basis in fact.
So while they may be vindicated ion this case, perhaps they can also learn a lesson here as well.

The story I heard this morning is that the family of one of Esteban Nunez's victims is suing Arnold over his pardon and his finances would be examined as part of the discovery process and that would likely reveal his support for his kid with the maid.
For those who haven't heard of this story Arnold reduced the sentence of Esteban Nunez for attempted murder from 16 years to 7 in his last week in office. Esteban is the thug son of former CA State Assembly leader Fabio Nunez who is a good buddy of Arnold's. This is one of those stories that only becomes more sordid and disgusting the more you look into it. Frankly after pulling this in his last few days in office Schwarzenegger should be shunned from polite political society.

It got covered back in January - but only on page A12. So far talk radio is about the only place where you'll hear about it.
Here's the short version: Esteban Nunez and three other privileged politically-connected boys from Sacramento liked to pretend they were gang members. So when they got turned away from a private fraternity party at SDSU, they went out and stabbed two random SDSU students. One died but the one Esteban stabbed in the back lived which is why he pleaded guilty to only attempted murder. Esteban was unrepentant over the crime and the only reason his sentence was reduced by Arnold is because his father is a good friend of Arnold's. You can read more here.

completely off-topic but funny (not funny ha ha):
"Now hereÂ’s a novel idea: if you want to encourage density in your metro area, bribe people.
"Perhaps that’s too strong a word. But the “Live Near Your Work” pilot program in Washington, D.C. aims to do just that by soliciting applications (.pdf) from people to receive grants of $12,000 — $6,000 from their employer, $6,000 from the city — to help with a down payment or closing costs to move closer to their place of employment or public transit.
The goal is noble: preserve and revitalize neighborhoods in the district through leverage, by tempting folks who use vehicles to commute to give them up. The idea is to reverse some of the auto-driven sprawl seen in some major metropolitan areas that are dense enough to support greater public transit use but, for reasons of history or development or transportation culture of the last 50 years, donÂ’t."
(obviously Wash DC must be overflowing with bucks to throw around.)
and now an opinion from someone who doesn't understand why well paid bureaucrats don't want to live in a crime-ridden city):
"How about this as an alternative: Higher taxes on downtown parking garages, and the revenue reduces residential property taxes? Or if the problem is that affordable housing is scarce near Metro stations, how about rezone for denser building near the stations? Meanwhile, it actually seems to me that Metro is super-crowded at rush hours and that on the Red, Blue, and Orange lines we have very little ability to increase rush hour capacity. We really ought to be thinking about building more Metro lines unless weÂ’re expecting population growth to halt." (Getting punched around the other day doesn't seem to have made Matt Yglesias any smarter.)

Well Don 'I'm Gay!' Lemon, begs to differ:
Asked by Behar about the “down low,” a term used to describe a subculture in the black community where men identify as straight but have sex with men, Lemon said “I don’t really know about the down low because I haven’t played that game. I know of it.” Lemon said the down low persists because of significant bias against gay men in the black church, black families and elsewhere. “It’s because, in black culture, the worst thing you can be really is a gay man. Hopefully people like me will make it better…the black community needs to get over that.”

*sigh*
I'm old enough to remember when you could work for twenty years at the same company. Way back then, you did live close to work. Today, if you work for anyone longer than five years, you're an old timer. You buy a home and then have to find another job somewhere else because of the volatility of business, so you're not nearly as close to work as you used to be.
Another thing we used to do by ourselves without a government program, back when we had an economy.

Brad Pitt: Christian upbringing was 'stifling'
“I got brought up being told things were God's way, and when things didn't work out, it was called God's plan," Pitt told reporters at the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. "I've got my issues with it. Don't get me started. I found it very stifling."
...
"I always had a lot of questions about the world, even in kindergarten,” Pitt told Parade magazine several years ago. “A big question to me was fairness. If I'd grown up in some other religion, would I get the same shot at heaven as a Christian has?"
...
When I got untethered from the comfort of religion, it wasn't a loss of faith for me, it was a discovery of self,” explained Pitt. “I had faith that I'm capable enough to handle any situation. There's peace in understanding that I have only one life, here and now, and I'm responsible."

No. I'm talking about Maria. Used to rent an apartment from a former CBS News camera man who had the task of breaking Maria into the news business. His stories were pretty funny. What would normally take 5 minutes to shoot would turn into hours of rehersal for her to read a couple of sentences for her report.

OT, but is this something? Via Bryan Preston at PJ Tatler:
Is Obama planning to call on Israel to retreat to its 1967 borders?
According to Yedioth Ahronoth, Obama will call on Israel to withdraw to the 1967 cease-fire lines with territorial adjustments that will be agreed on in the negotiations with the Palestinian National Authority. The president will label the West Bank settlements as “illegal” and emphasize that Israel must halt their construction.
I don't know how much stock I put in the rumors, given that they're "filtered through the Chinese press." But even the hint of a rumor of this sort tells me that there's a grain of truth in it.

Not everybody can manage that. For most folks who bother it tends to be a 'do this way because' sort of thing--perhaps not the healthiest approach to morality and ethics, but at least it puts some curb on our worst impulses. And from what I've seen of history, nothing is scarier than humans with no 'limits'...

However, your skills may be of better use in writing the fake letters to Penthouse Forum as opposed to writing the technical abstracts for NASA Journal of Applied Thermodynamics. Oprah: I remember being at the compound once, early on in our friendship. As an outsider, I thought, "God, I'm actually here on the lawn with all the Kennedy cousins." But the games never ended. I'll never forget being in the house and someone saying, "Where is she? Oprah, we're starting another game!" And I ran into a closet and closed the door because I'd already done three games—enough! It was all very intense.
Maria: It still is! It's competitive when you walk in the door. It's competitive at the table. It's competitive on the playing field. It's competitive in a boat. Even my mother is very competitive at everything—from checkers to Ping-Pong to sailing to politics. When I was a girl, she'd tell my father, "Tackle her as hard as you tackle the boys! Knock her down!" She'd tell him to serve the tennis ball at me as hard as he could. I couldn't even return it—it would knock the racquet out of my hand. I thought that was cool.

Religion can codify morality, and that is a wonderful benefit independent of any belief in its afterlife.
This is where I have a disagreement with the principled atheist. (That means you too Ayn) The concept of religion does more than simply codify morality, it fixes it in absolutism, rather than letting it slide on relativism. Most atheists with which you can discuss the topic will obviously bring up the red herring of murder, the agreed absolute evil, and stipulate quite rationally that they too could not even in a relativistic sense abide murder, and see therefore absolute wrongs still exist. But if you dig deeper, their rational justification for the position seems to hinge off of reciprocity (security in their own life for respecting others) and societal benefit (society thrives on stability), both of which benefits them. Since the stance overall benefits them personally rationally it can be supported logically. What most of the time they will not discuss is the fact that if they were the sole exception or part of a small group of exceptions to the common rules of morality, if such a system could be sustained, it would be much better for them personally. So logically, an atheist should be pushing, where possible, for moral rules to apply to everyone *but* themselves. Any other contemplation of a rational relative moral system is simply not logical.

Let's see, Israel belongs to the Jews, who annexed it from the imperialistic British, who took it from the Ottomans following WWI, the Ottomans having seized it from the Egyptian Malmuks, they having captured it from the Crusaders, whom took Israel from the early Arab Muslims, who captured Israel from the Byzantines, whom split from the Roman Empire, who seized the land from the Jews, who took the land from the Persians who had taken over the Babylonians, who themselves had conquered and exiled the Jews who settled the land in prehistory.

I married a bodybuilder who became an actor and lived in California. No one thought, "Well, there's somebody who'll go into politics." I don't think I'd ever even met a Republican before I met Arnold.

Let's recap. Ten years ago Arnold drills the cook maid nanny domestic help and knocks her up. He supports the woman and the baby for ten years during which time he gets himself elected chief executive of the world's seventh largest economy in no small part because Maria provide him with cover for his groping women issues. Arnold serves out his time as Governor and, upon leaving office, finally notifies Maria about the little Barbarian and that she is a step-mom of a sort. But, rather than Arnold leaving the marital home, it is Maria who has to pack up, vacate the manse and winds up in a hotel.
Seems like Maria's clearly sheltered upbringing did her no favors. She should have talks with Grampa Joe more about the ways of the world.

Bill Maher is a contemptible, talentless midget jackass,...
who has a face like Julian Assange's buttcrack.

I heard a rumor that Maher is actually an in-the-closet ultra-conservative, evangelical Christian who, a la Lila Rose, is secretly recording the conversations of ultra-liberals and giving the footage to Fox News.

I'm gettin married to my Humvee truck
it doesn't leave me when I'm down on my luck
it doesn't shop at fancy stores or have a lawyer
or want a divorce.
It doesn't care if I stay out late
it doesn't bitch about the money I make
we'll be together till the end
it won't sleep with my best friend.
I'm gonna get down on one knee
and ask my truck if it'll marry me
I'll never drive another car
we'll honeymoon at the titty bar...
We're gonna have the time of our life
the exhaust pipes are tighter than my Ex-wife...
You think I'm crazy, but listen to this,
I can bring home a hooker and it won't get pissed, no...
Wedding ring won't cost me a buck
when I get married to my Humvee, Humvee truck.....

For me it's kinda related to Shakepeare's "Many a truth is spoken in jest."
(That IS from Shakepeare, right ?)
