— Gabriel Malor Via the always interesting Guy Benson, it seems Democrats have a patriotism problem after all. Of course, the Harvard social scientists couch it as Republicans having "appropriated" patriotic holidays, but if the Democrats were better than indifferent on the issue, I doubt that could have happened.
Democratic political candidates can skip this weekend's July 4th parades. A new Harvard University study finds that July 4th parades energize only Republicans, turn kids into Republicans, and help to boost the GOP turnout of adults on Election Day.[...]
"The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and its symbols during the 20th century. Survey evidence also confirms that Republicans consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats. According to this interpretation, there is a political congruence between the patriotism promoted on Fourth of July and the values associated with the Republican party. Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans," write Harvard Kennedy School Assistant Professor David Yanagizawa-Drott and Bocconi University Assistant Professor Andreas Madestam.
The key findings of the study are that July Fourth celebrations (1) increase the likelihood of a youth identifying as a Republican by at least 2 percent if attended before age 18, (2) raise the likelihood that attendees will vote for a Republican candidate by 4 percent; and (3) boost the likelihood an attendee will vote by about 1 percent; and (4) increase the chances an attendee will make a political contribution by 3 percent.
Those are slight differences, but every little bit counts.
LATER: Top Ten Ways Democrats Can Re-"Appropriate" July Fourth
(A couple of these blatantly stolen from commenters or Guy.)
10. Include a disclaimer on celebration notices warning that displays of patriotism might endanger children's welfare.
9. Have the EPA require that celebrations use only fireworks that are environmentally friendly and greenhouse gas neutral.
8. Include a ritual apology to Great Britain after all readings of the Declaration of Independence.
7. Have the National Endowment for the Arts fund naked interpretive dance troupes at July Fourth parades. Also, drum circles.
6. Burn slave-owning Founders in effigy.
5. Have the NLRB require that all parade volunteers be unionized.
4. Serve soy chai lattes at July Fourth parades.
3. A free bong hits booth at every parade.
2. Require that children have a permission slip to attend signed by . . . their school principal.
And the Number 1 way that Democrats could re-appropriate the Fourth of July is
1. Actually love their country and talk about it without always saying "I love America, but [issue probably having to do with their relationship with their fathers]."
Effin' 'tards.

It's not 'appropriating'. The political left has decided to abandon the very concept of the United States and hitch its wagon to transnational institutions. That's how they get Horseface Kerry banging on about global tests, and Dick Obama unable to articulate an opinion about American exceptionalism. It's all about the UN and the ICC for them. Communists do love 'l'Internationale', after all.

If I didn't think most "studies" were crap, and especially ones from Harvard, I would reference this as a good reason for parents to make sure they take their kids to 4th of July celebrations.
My daughter will be coming by Sunday with grandson for hamburgers and hot dogs from the grill. I'll have to make sure we get some fireworks and make it a real "4th of July" celebration.

APPROPRIATING patriotism.....perhaps we are better at LOVING our country because we are not self loathing, no-borders, nanny state parasites who sit around wondering what my country can do for me. Truth is, a country can do nothing for you that the people are not willing to do. Dems are not willing to do what it takes to make this country great. Even John F. Kennedy would not recognize the dems of today.
Generations of dems now believe that the U.S. of A. is against them and the world and it is Ricco Suave cool to transcend God and Country for some socialist utopia of government swaddling. Just sayin'.

Actually, my best Fourth of July celebration was when I was working/studying in London. All the Americans took over this bar, we had a bajillion American flags. The bartenders wore 'em in their hair or down their shirts. The Brits would say "Happy Independence Day" and buy us drinks. It was awesome. My second-best Fourth of July celebration was in Costa Rica in 2007. Right after the U.S. won the Copa de Oro against Mexico. The ticos loved that (they don't like Mexicans very much in Costa Rica). I was out in a rural town for that one, but everyone still gathered at the bar and bought me and my buddy drinks. Nothing like being overseas for the holidays.

I haven't looked at the particulars of this study, but in general, yes. It becomes even more meaningful if the study is replicated and yields the same results.
One of my peeves with the media is when they say "A poll puts Smith ahead of Jones 46% to 44%, but the margin of error 3%, so it's a statistical tie." No, it isn't. Rephrasing "46 – 44 < 3" by saying "46 = 44" is just wrong. Because it's social science, people think they can be lose with the numbers. But it's still science.

I was eating dinner with friends on Market street in October, 2001, the night that we started to bomb Afghanistan. There was a loud anti-American protest on the street and my buddy and I were sorely tempted to go outside and fight.
That, and the drive up the coast the next day when we noticed the conspicuous absence of American flags convinced me that CA was no longer part of America. I was very happy that I had moved to NJ a few months before.

Yeah, the whole city genuinely smells like a toilet now.
Here's a true story: Years ago I used to work for a hospital in San Francisco. But not at the hospital; I only worked in the Administrative offices which were near the Civic Center/Van Ness/Market area. I had to walk about four blocks from BART to work.
Now, even though I wasn't actually treating patients or working in clinical areas, I still had to have a TB skin test every year (policy). Around the third year, I started popping positive on these tests. Just walking those four blocks while dodging the homeless and their fecal remnants on the sidewalks was enough exposure that I now test positive for TB exposure (and will for the rest of my life).

Unfortunately, the Libs, Lefties and "Progressives" have hijacked the Democrat Party.
My Dad was a union local president and heavily involved in the Alameda County (CA) labor political committee. They organized the annual Labor Day Picnic fundraiser for their "political education" committee, and it was a draw for national Democrats, even in Presidential election years.
Though my Dad was a Korean War Navy vet and a patriot, he acquiesced in the infiltration of the Democrat Party by the hard Lefties.
It's like how the European cuckoo breeds: it goes into the nest of another species of songbird, kicks out one of the other bird's eggs and lays an egg of its own in the nest. When the other bird comes back, she sees that the same number of eggs she left in the nest is still there, so she sits on them. When the cuckoo egg hatches, the cuckoo chick pushes the other eggs and chicks out of the nest one at a time, and since the cuckoo is larger than the other chicks, its wider mouth prompts the parent birds to feed it more than the other chicks.
Eventually the parent birds end up raising just the cuckoo chick, using all their energy to keep this interloper fat and happy. That's what's happened to the Democrat Party and the various "movements" that have wormed their way into it.

We were at the O-Club pool yesterday when the speakers sounded the bugle call for "Retreat" (the lowering of the flag). For those of you who haven't experienced it, everyone stops, faces where the flag is being lowered with hand over heart, while the retreat sounds and the flag is lowered.
Yesterday, my 7 year old kept dropping a basketball (he was far from my reach) while retreat was being sounded. The second it was over I stormed over to where he was throughout a chorus of "ooooh" "uh-ohs" and "look-outs" to give him a good shake and a lecture on flag etiquette.
I'm sure, at some point, I either got the lecture of saw one. To this day anything flag related or the national anthem brings tears to my eyes. Alas, for the great majority of americans, it does not.

3. A free bong hits booth at every parade.
2. Require that children have a permission slip to attend signed by . . . their school principal.
And the Number 1 way that Democrats could re-appropriate the Fourth of July is

I've read a couple of reviews for the new Transformers movie, and a big burr in the liberal saddle is Michael Bay's "jingoistic" flag waving and admiration for the US military.
What a bunch of bed wetting fuckfaces. Look, I won't defend Bay as some sort of auteur; his movies are loud and dumb (if also entertaining), but the leftie film review community really hates him because he digs American military strength. For that, they can all eat a bag of dicks.

Michael Bay understands that movies like Rendition and The Valley of Elah make zero money at the box office because Americans don't like to see their military run down by rich Hollywood liberals.
Michael Bay needs his movies to gross in the hundreds of millions to be profitable, so he needs to give audiences themes that are popular, not ones that are politically correct.

The Army has gotten pretty dumb with their uniforms in the last few years. They got rid of the dress greens, and modified the dress blues, which were worn only at formal functions, and made that the standard dress uniform. Now, when soldiers wear the Class Bs, it's navy blue pants with a white shirt. They look like they're delivering milk. And don't get me started on the ridiculous Army Combat Uniform, which doesn't work in any tactical environment at all.
The Army should really think about resurrecting the WWII era dress uniforms, with the dark brown jackets and khaki shirts and ties.

"Those are slight differences, but every little bit counts."
These "slight differences", above a "chance" threshold are within a statistically significant to highly significant range for nearly any measurable set. In Las Vegas, for example, this sort of a shift in the "chance" occurrences at ones table of choice would cause every camera in the casino to focus there. Pit bosses would be peering over your shoulder, pretty girls would be pole dancing at the back of your chair, visions of Ferraris would be dancing in your head! The really important bit to remember, I think, is that this phenomenon seems to occur without any overt "selling" or manipulation for effect! Imagine what might be accomplished with just a little nudge to the subconscious of the (as Rush would say) Yutes and other attendees!

I gotta get my flag brackets properly arranged on our front deck on Saturday. The one on the far left (the flag's own right) isn't the highest of the four.

Is she? Or is she one of those pork-eating, wine-drinking Muslims who just says they're Muslim because they like their head to be in the proximity of their shoulders?
The answer to your question is "Bill Clinton officiated".

And take off that cornbrero when the flag passes by, dipstick!

"To this day anything flag related or the national anthem brings tears to my eyes. Alas, for the great majority of americans, it does not."
Me too. Believe it or not, I sometimes get a touch misty when I see the Budweiser commercial about baseball where they are getting ready for the game that ends with the flyover above the stadium, or the more recent 4th of July one. And I'm a guy. Good advertising, IMO.

and john mccain was almost the head of the republican party
and we know damn well he would be the amnesty king..so is it safe to say that the republican party wants to give the united states to mexico?
Posted by: navycopjoe at June 30, 2011 01:00 PM (R7NIt)
Nobody is saying the Republican party is made up of conservatives..most of all, the cosnervatives aren't. The Dems are so far left that the rare moderate simply does not go into the definition of Dem any more. The leader is a socialist so far to the left there is no light left, the senators and the congressmen are liberals, and the party hates America....
Republicans don't hate America.....from the mods to the far right....they love America and want America to thrive again.

What a bunch of bullshit. If you live in this country, it means you buy into what it is, and WHY it is so.
If that's too much trouble, then go befoul some other place.

I pulled over. Got out. Walked up to him and said "thank you." and shook his hand.
You'd be surprised at how much that means to people that wear the uniform of a police officer or an Army Sgt or a fireman. Two simple words and a handshake.
When I wore a uniform it happened to me one time. Only once. But I'll never forget it.

The funny part is that if you were to think of this as a lefty bloq question, they'd be offering up simon de bolivar, ho chi mihn, joseph stalin, etc. Then they'd dance about in flower dresses (yes, the men, too) and eat vegetables and cry over a tree.

My boy, who is now 6, has been doing that to every soldier he sees since he was old enough to walk over and say it. Still does. And everytime, it doesn't matter what the person may be doing, they stop and tell him how much they appreciate it.

After the blizzards a couple of years ago I found a new high tech cell phone in my driveway under the snow. It had not gotten wet because the temp was too low. I called sprint and she put me on the line with the fireman who, during the blizzard, had gone through my yard to put a sparking transformer line back up. He was incredibly grateful I had called, I was incredibly grateful he had protected me while I slept on the worst weather night here in 50 years. I said so. We both ended up laughing because the Sprint lady, still on the line, was sobbing.

@ Dagny, #158
Retreat is what I miss most about the Army.
I've just gotten to the point that I can listen without tearing up. Taps kills me.
I was driving through Ft Myer and watched an honor guard walking the riderless horse back to the stables. He was alone (which is rare) but even out of Arlington, that special horse, that symbol, is handled with the utmost respect and ceremony. I watched the guard, in full uniform on a 95 degree day, carefully walk the horse. Near the stables he crossed the paths of several soldiers who stopped came to attention and saluted until well after it had passed. There wasn't anyone there to see it but me and the honor guard.
Try explaining to your teenager when they get in the car after lifeguarding for 10 hours why you're weeping into the steering wheel. Guess he chalked it up to mom being nuts (again).

This is how the left celebrates the 4th -- the rainbow family of living light to camp out in Gifford Pinchot National Forrest this weekend. 20,000 + smelly hippies trashing the forrest.

The founders didn't fight and die for a King to tell them what kind of health insurance they had to buy.
Of course not. They fought and died for high speed rail. Everybody knows that. /liberal

It's ironic that I got more of a chuckle out of the except of your script he included than in all the supposedly witty writing of that moron. Isn't it funny how they get so angry that supposedly Conservatives say liberals aren't patriotic, but then say that the most basic of patriotic holidays is essentially conservative?
