I was prompted to make this chart because the BLS highlighted those stats in their press release. They may have done it before, but this is the first time I noticed it, and it seemed sort of odd.

In less than two years after entering my stepsons' lives, the youngest went from crap grades and not liking simple math because he couldn't do it to almost straight A's and loving math.  The teenager has gone from lazy and apathetic, to motivated and developing a plan for his life. 

None of these things were demands, but expectations.  Their mom was just coddling them and trying to protect them and make their life easier.  Admirable, but I told her she wasn't doing them any favors. 

(I also think having a strong, responsible male role-model for the first time in their life might have had a wee bit to do with that as well.)

20 This chart kind of takes me back to when the U of Michigan law school was doing their "affirmative action" plan with minority student (black, hispanic, native American Indian) admissions.  Being a minority applicant automatically gave you bonus points on your application to give you an edge over other applicants.  What was later found out was that asians (oriental and Indian) applicants did NOT receive this bonus, even though they are quite clearly "minorities".  They weren't given extra points because they routinely placed similarily to white applicants in terms of test scores and abilities.

Some minorities are clearly more equal than others.

I think you also have to look at the range of nationalities that are considered Asian.  We're not just talking about Chinese and Japanese, but also coutnries such as India, Pakistan, the Phillippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.  How many of you have a convenience store in or near your town that's owned by an Indian family?  I'm in white bread NH, and I can think of at least two.  Businesses tend to pass from father to son.  Factor in the Korean laundries and Chinese restaurants, and you've got a substantial portion of small businesses in this country being owned and run very well by Asians.  I think it's less about parents tying their kids to the piano ala Amy Chua and more about close knit family units.

The problem I've encountered with Asians -- particularly recent immigrants -- is that they're very insular and standoffish.  First generation Americans with East Asian parents (Japan, China, Korea, etc) tend to overcome that particular hurdle, though, and merge quite well into Western society without abandoning their familial roots.  But we all know the horror stories of Middle Eastern families who don't like how "westernized" their children are becoming, so they marry them off to cousins back in Pakistan or send them to Jordan to live with "proper" relatives.

Honestly?  I blame the 80's.  It seemed like every other story on the news was about a kidnapping in the 80's.  Between "Stranger Danger" and the missing kids on milk cartons, it was everywhere.  I lived in a rural town, but my parents didn't like me making the ten minute walk to the town's lake on my own, or with my older sister, for fear we'd get snatched by a passing maniac.  And my parents are not and have never been helicopter parents.  They grew up in the 40's and 50's when kids could roam around and get into all sorts of shenanigans, but still be home for dinner.  It was a scary new world for them, having young kids during the paranoia of the 80's.  And if MY parents were overprotective, I can only imagine what my lefty friends' parents were like.

Exactly.  But the inclusion of Hispanics for the feds shows that they are really more interested in ethnic classifications, for certain groups, than their racial classification.  Given this desire on the feds' part, one would think that they would have ethnic subcategories of mogoloid to correspond more accurately with Americans' views.  But, of course, obfuscation is a more the feds' intent than anything.

In whole, perhaps, but orientals certainly score above whites in IQ.  It's oriental culture that has held them back.  China had many of the most important inventions long before anyone else, but no one ever benefitted from Chinese genius.  Even the Chinese didn't benefit very much from it.  They had moveable type long before the Europeans, but it was the Europeans who brought it to the world, not the Chinese.  And Chinese culture didn't allow the Chinese, themselves, to use that invention to anything near its full potential even in their own culture.

Part of my job involves reporting race and ethnicity statistics to the feds, and yes, those groups would be classified as "Asians."  It's a self-selected statistic, and the breakdown of how individuals make those selections can be made more specific with the inclusion of ethnicities and regional affiliations, but in the end those figures are collapsed into the racial categories as provided by the BLS.

Nepotism.  It's what keeps Asian unemployment down.  How many Chinese/Indian restaurants or other service business have you been to that have anyone other than their specific racial unit working there.  White owned businesses will hire all kinds but the Asians rarely do.

I disagree.  In studies where national IQs have been measured the orientals have scored higher than whites.  But the data was gathered by the governments of those same oriental nations and the people who compiled the studies didn't take into consideration the oriental cultural need to "save face" which would have made those oriental governments cook the scores to make their people look better.

THIS.  It makes me think of Dinesh D'Souza.  His father DESPISED the British for their colonial control of India, but Dinesh looked at it and said, "They gave us law and industry and education."  With the internet and modern communication, colonialism doesn't even have to be part of the equation for the benefits of capitalism and republican democracy to spread like wildfire.

I think Asians, for the most part, don't have a psyche of victimization, but rather realize that if you work hard, you can achieve.  They don't feel inferior, nor should they.  They don't take out an inferiority complex on other races and society in general.

Any people, given the freedom and opporunity to learn and progress, will do it (eventually).  That's why islamic society is such an abomination on the human spirit.

Hmmmm, so you're saying that Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Archimedes, Pathagorus, da Vinci,  Bell, Edison, Ford, Rockefeller and Einstein (to name a few) were orientals?  What of any noteworthy significance has an oriental invented or contributed to this world in the past three thousand years? Whoa, gun powder, big fuck'n deal. All of the most signifcant advances in mathematics, science, industry, warfare, all other kinds of technologies and higher qualities of life have been made by Caucasians.

116 I took a course 20 yrs ago in which the leftist, black instructor informed us that the reason blacks were behind everyone else was because of their underlying philosophy. Asians saw their lot in life as karma, whites saw their lot in life as the result of their own ambition or lack thereof and blacks saw their situation as the result of someone else's (read "the man's")direct influence over their lives. His solution was for us (anyone non-black) to intrude even further into their lives by providing them with preferences and catering to their every need. He was too obtuse to see the irony.

The “Tiger Mom” thing is stupid and I’m tired of the meme as well. I think parents have the ability to raise highly capable, highly employable children without forcing them to play piano, returning their hand drawn birthday cards because they aren’t good enough, and calling them garbage continuously.

 

You know who this glorification of the Asian way of education and parenting serves? Progressives in the education movement because theyÂ’ll be using this kind of crap to argue for even more increased control over children in terms of lengthening school hours and shortening summer vacation as well as continuing to push through policies where 3 year olds are turned over to the public school system.  And you know what that results in? Good citizens who shut up and do what their government tells them. HeyÂ…that kinda sounds like China.

118 Bill Gates and Steve Jobs aren't exactly upstanding models of creativity. Gates didn't really create anything new, there were GUIs before Windows. His was just moderately user friendly interface (that's so good it has to be updated every 3 years). Jobs just created an overpriced brand, not new products.

I have not graduated from college. (My parents did not provide for it and frankly, I've been too busy working.) I've worked all sorts of "Joe" jobs--everything from fast food to warehouse worker to auto mechanic. My parents never made me feel bad about being a mechanic or a fast food burger flipper. What they did require was that I be the best damn mechanic or burger flipper around. Ability and opportunity are a crap shoot. Ambition and hard work are a choice.

In 2000, I moved to California with $200 in my pocket and not knowing a soul. I lived in a tent until I could get a job. Every place I went, I worked hard to understand the business, how I could increase the bottom line, tried to learn as much as I could, and developed my professional skills. 40 hours a week still makes me feel guilty.

Fast forward 10 years. I now live in NC (hard work is not valued in CA), have a nice house, a great wife, 3 kids, make over six figures, and manage an $18M portfolio of  IT projects.

I think the Chua method of parenting can tend towards being abusive, BUT, I love that kids are taught where their limits are and that obstacles must be overcome.

I am not that smart nor particularly gifted in any area. What I lack in intellect, I make up for in persistence. I HATE the idea that someone would take that away from me and tell me that the reason I wasn't successful was someone elses fault. What a tremendous assault on my dignity and value as a human being.

Unless you're seriously disabled, you can do something to contribute. If you're unwilling to help yourself, I'm not interested in helping you, especially if you reach into my pocket and take my hard-earned money to pay the bloated salary and benefits of a drone working at the U.S. Department of Redundancy Department.

122 It's been my observation that Asians do a very good job of taking care of their own. Look at any Asian-run business and tell me how many non-Asians you see working there. Unusually none. Seems like that might have an effect.

123 The Asian run business I am most familiar with is a grocery store run by a friendly Korean lady who works 6 days a week, at least 12 hours a day - probably more like 14.  They also own a few restaurants and employ a goodly number of people.  I believe most are Korean, but I am sure language enters into it.  I suspect some are relatives.  Her husband manages the restaurants, and I believe buys a lot of the grocery stock from wholesalers near NYC.  That means weekly trips of about 6 hours each way plus loading and unloading...

I don't begrudge her success, because I work hard but not that hard.

Try seven. My mom was a tiger mom, so was her mom. We were literally and verbally whipped into shape. There was no doubt at any point in time what we were to be doing; mom made everything perfectly clear. No arguing tolerated. It achieved "results".

As a rule, tiger mom's effectiveness applies so long as they are stay at home mothers. When tiger mom becomes a "professional" leaving the kids in after school "Y" care, tiger mom's expectations remain in effect with their young elementary school children only for 18 months until they realize that their kids are no longer "under the thumb" and have lost respect for parents given so much time after school  developing peer relations whose constant bombardment sinks in to "quit working so hard, just don't care about excellence" eroding whatever habits the tiger mom established for home life. Children whose relationship with parents and family supersede  relations with peers will abide by tiger mom rules, of course. But not all tiger cubs continue to respect the "tradition as better" so far as the cubs are concerned, having converted to convenience and self indulgence along with their friends. Restricting your child's contacts with friends matters and determines the degree of "success". What you provide your child with at home matters, as well, since when you're not on their back, cubs will play.  With the musical instruction, you'll note as a rule that Chinese students study from Chinese teachers in America because the "Chinese" identity supersedes all with the Chinese tiger mom.

I've recently seen the same old fashioned methodology of parenting from German, French, Chinese, Korean and Indian Hindi parents as my parents practiced. So long as the mother is at home, home life is as the mother works to maintain.
