— Ace Interesting finding. This is not yet working out the way I imagined.
Rasmussen reasons that soon enough the field will be winnowed from the large field to the more realistic smaller field, and looks ahead to where Republicans will be then.
In a three-way race between Romney, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and Texas Governor Rick Perry, Romney earns 34% of the vote, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters. Bachmann picks up 27% support, while Perry, the only one who has yet to formally declare heÂ’s a candidate, gets 26%. Five percent (5%) like some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided.
So close to a three way tie, but not quite, as Romney leads.
What's more, if it becomes a two man race between any two of them, it's a closer tie:
The race is a virtual tie, however, if itÂ’s a two-way race. In a showdown between just Romney and Bachmann, 44% of primary voters support Romney, while 42% favor Bachmann. The remaining 14% either like another candidate or are undecided.Pit Romney against Perry alone, and the former Massachusetts governor earns 43% while the Texas governor gets 39%. Nine percent (9%) prefer another candidate, while another nine percent (9%) are undecided.
A matchup between Bachmann and Perry finds the two candidates deadlocked with 39% support each. Twelve percent (12%) support another candidate, and nine percent (9%) are undecided.

The numbers don't show that. They do show that the three's support doesn't overlap by much, and Romney's fans are far more strident and purist and fuck all those other guys than the other guys' fans are.

Romney has a couple deal killers:
1) The evangelical arm of the Republican will NEVER vote for a Morman, especially if they have an evangelical (Perry) to vote for instead.
2) During this time of conservative resurgence and the Tea Party, Romney is just too much of a squish.
Perry wins nomination easily IMHO.

The real race looks like it will boil down to a contest between Bachmann and Perry. Bachman will probably take Iowa. Romney will take NH.
South Carolina right now is a tossup. A LOT will depend on who Nikki Haley endorses and she has kinda been palling around with Perry.
Posted by: Vic at August 02, 2011 02:34 PM (M9Ie6)
Yeah have to stop Bachmann. Don't make Jeff B. look like the pathetic shit he claims her and Palin's supporters are because he refuses to vote her. And he spends all his time bashing people that aren't thrilled
Because you know its those people that are the "take my ball and go home" ones despite the evidence to the contrary.
Posted by: buzzion at August 02, 2011 02:35 PM (oVQFe)
Right now, Romney gets to read Sarah Palin's Facebook page, wait 3 days, and then announce his new policy that sounds suspiciously like what Sarah Palin wrote.
Romney won't be able to bend with the breeze and be Bill Clinton 2.0 for much longer.
Bachmann will continue to make Jeff B. curl up in a corner and mewl like a kitten with a hot curling iron in its ass for the foreseeable future.

Because he just looks like another well coifed politician. we are wary of such folks. His record is strong, though imperfect, and he's a good campaigner in my opinion. We cannot intelligently support him until he has performed in a debate and handled a wider array of issues with answers. I believe he is the best one, but many people realize they do not have enough info to go on.
Electability is so key, because we are all, honestly, voting against Obama. We want our primary vote to be the most anti Obama it can be. We need to know Perry on foreign policy and especially how he'll compete against Obama next year.
The polls right now show that someone who hasn't even answered those questions is competing seriously against Romney, entirely because his resume is so much better. The sky is the limit for Perry. I hope he looks like Romney in the debates (I do not like Romney, but think his anti-Obama rhetoric is excellent).

Sorry but I give this little to no credence. McStain losing was entirely on him. When the race began I thought he was a good guy; by the time it was over I couldn't stand seeing or hearing him. He and his dimwit campaign fuckheads ran an extremely inept operation that really brought into question if they really wanted to win. Granted it was an uphill climb because of how popular sentiment was being driven by the salad tossing media; but the fuckups by that senile cocksucker when El JEFe was making a complete ass out of himself in the debates to the point where "None of the Above" looked like the best chance is all due to Johnny Jerkoff being a horrible candidate.

Ohhhh suddenly we don't want to talk politics eh? What would you rather I say? The spectrum of views generally held by the public moved to left by virtue of the fact he allowed himself to be defined to the far right, and as a result the commonly held conservative views that could be held without being "extreme" were significantly limited. Seems like an awful lot to say instead of "The overton window moved left"

The ticket which can win is Perry/Bachman or Perry/Palin, if Palin will ride ride shotgun...which I doubt.
Successful governing experience/Tea Party conservatisim/ federal congress experience, and physical attractiveness for the droids.
May not happen because of RINOs and LINOs but, imho has the chops other than in the NE and Cali.

In his February 2007 State of the State address, Gov. Perry said: "I am also proposing a $100 million investment in a more secure border. There is no such thing as homeland security without border security. It is not hyperbole to say terrorists view our international border with Mexico as a prime point of entry – that is the conclusion of the U.S. intelligence community.... The best plan to secure our border involves intensive operations with federal, state and local officials working together to seal off common illegal crossings. So far we have used all available resources to fund additional patrol hours, new vehicles, and new technology for local law enforcement."

Yes, but it required forms and time. It wasn't a trivial thing. Relatively easy, but I think that the state should be careful when compelling this kind of thing. And it is compulsion for many people who are intimidated by the power of the state.
This is by no means a deal-breaker for me, but I would like to hear his rationale for signing the bill.

Um, are you serious? This is a totally legitimate reason for the government to take land. One of the few. And Texas does have a huge problem with I-35. We do need more highway. It's just a fact.
Also, one thing we also need is for Mexico to become a better country. While the main problem is corruption in their lawless society, we will eventually want them to be a healthy neighbor whose citizens aren't fleeing illegally across our border.
I-35 already is unbelievably clogged with freight from Mexico. We need more capacity.
My problem with the TTC is not eminent domain. It's that it doesn't benefit Texans as much as it benefits others. Making Texas easier to bypass doesn't help our economy. Making an enormously expensive road should come at the expense of those who use it, and profit Texans instead of someone else.
I want something like the TTC, only done in a more Texas benefiting manner. And Perry saw the light on this. He has made a handful of bad calls, and undid them all before they did any harm, and over 11 years of making thousands of calls. So I think this shows he's a pretty reasonable guy.
Curious thinks people won't vote for Perry because he's from Texas. That is stupid.
Posted by: Dustin at August 02, 2011 03:32 PM (519+h)
I re-read the history on this yesterday. The vaccine came out, shortly thereafter Perry signed an executive order to mandate the vaccine (with opt-out option), a sizable fraction of the public were quite upset, both houses of the legislature bitch-slapped him by passing a law to reverse that EO, and Perry signed it.
As far as I can tell, zero girls were vaccinated under the program.
Personally, I am opposed to using schools to deliver vaccines for diseases that are not contagious by casual contact, so I would have opposed that vaccine had I been in Texas. But with a ten year governorship and his current track-record on jobs, I am not going to disqualify Perry over this. It was a dumb idea, he got put into his place, that's all.

Fair synopsis. I found it infuriating. Partly because the vaccine was not well tested and we didn't even know what the real results of it were. How effective, how long, etc.
Rick Perry is not nearly as libertarian as I'd like. That's just a fact. He's made a couple of calls wrong, and he was willing to deal with the mess once he stepped in it, like a man, signing the bill reversing his own EO in this case.
Not perfect. Not a political like Obama. Do not worship him. He is not smarter than the average bear and will not affect the rise of the oceans or anything like that. He will administrate with competence and if he screws up, he will intelligently deal with it. He has a record of spending cuts, despite an amazing effort to lie about this great record. He has a record of getting out of the way of the private sector. It's not like Rick Perry is the reason Texas has such a great economy with all these new jobs. Rick Perry simply was smart enough not to be the reason we have an intrusive government in the way of those jobs. Get it?
He doesn't need to be perfect. He doesn't need to be able to solve everything. He needs to get government out of our way, and I think he's the most electable guy who will do it.
I do not know this for sure, and we would be idiots to bank on him before he's performed in debates and laid out his plans. It is so early. But he's definitely my preference at this prelim stage.

The poll was of likely republican primary voters, not the general public, Paris.
The Generic Republican comparison makes no sense, IMO.
I think he's doing amazingly well against Romney, who has been running for president nearly the entire long time Perry has been running a state many times larger, more complicated, and more effective than Mass.
And Romney was not reelected. Why was that? I know he didn't run, but I think it's because he was unpopular as his term was not very successful.
That matters the most to me. That's why I prefer Perry to many other republicans apart from ideology. He was a good enough governor that he was reelected over and over. More than anyone in my state's history.
He's successful at government leadership. You're right he is not yet leading in the polls, but he's leading as far as the resume goes.

We are not going to get large enough Majorities and a Conservative President in 2012 to fix any of it anyway, so people need to be careful what they are doing, because Democrats are playing a much more skilled and aggressive long term game than Republican ever dreamed of being able to play.

Soooo. All those people who go to the polls next November to vote for Republicans for House and Senate should then (since they are already in the voting booth voting for Republicans in large enough numbers to gain majorities in the House and Senate) vote for Obama?

@314
You're thinking at a high level of political thought. You have failed to consider the what actually wins Presidential elections, amongst the idiot unwashed masses of a spolied rotten country. You're not incorrect....just Idealistic!

@320
No...they should vote their conscience! But with the understanding that the Democrats and the media fully intend to drop a Shit Sammich on the Republican sand force them to take the Blame for Obama, should a Republican win, handing them back the Congress and the Executive Branch in 2016, and that will happend.
So then one has to ask himself...are we playing the same game, and do we even know the rules to game that is being played.
If winning is the goal then fine, but that has nothing to do with actually being able to trun the Sinking Tintanic around. The question becomes, who wants to be the Captain as her bow slips into the Deep.

2) He hasn't even declared yet. He'll get a similar boost to his numbers as other candidates did when they officially entered.
3) Rick Perry was at one of the first TEA Party rallies on April 15, 2009. Pretty hard to argue with those credentials over some of the other more recent converts/panderers.
4) He's been governor for 10 years and lt. governor for 2 years before that. TX Dems are the most vicious bastards around. If they haven't found anything to "get" him with, it's highly unlikely that's there's any real dirt to find on him.
5) When you break down his support numbers from Gallup, he draws almost exactly equally from Bachmann and Romney as well as some from downticket conservative candidates.
6) Both Palin and Giuliani will endorse him.
The race is his to lose.

It's not just a matter of showing up and making an announcement that you're going to run. Campaigns require lots of fundraising and campaign infrastructure and she hasn't done any fundraising and she has no campaign infrastructure. She isn't liked by the big money people who are the ones who REALLY fund the campaigns. She consistently polls among the worst against Obama. She's got a got a gig where she is making a ton of money, no way she's going to put her family through that media ring of fire again when she can influence events from her Facebook account. She's too smart to run.
If loyal supporters were all it took to win, we would have elected President Ron Paul in 2008.

Yes, it's amazing to me how Romney will explain his views on something after everyone else has. I don't think Perry can be thrown in that boat. He's been with the Tea Party from the beginning. He isn't one of those obnoxious ones who pretends he started the Tea Party. He simply joined with it.
" he draws almost exactly equally from Bachmann and Romney"
I find this not surprising. He's got many of both's most positive traits. What many like about Romney is that he has gravitas and is a hard hitter with executive experience. No surprise many would switch to Perry there.
I like Bachmann. I think she will continue to be competitive after Romney is not (I think conventional wisdom is otherwise). We'll see how well Perry can win her fans over.

One word answer for you: unemployment.
If it's still high in November 2012, the guy with the country's strongest employment record is going to beat the snot out of the "lets pivot to jobs over and over" again guy every time.
Posted by: Jim B at August 02, 2011 04:59 PM (QD3//)
a) No legislative record. Yes, she can point to a whole lot of things she voted AGAINST. But to be perfectly blunt about it, wasn't that PRECISELY what Barack Obama said too?
b) No chief executive experience. She could make a convincing argument against Romney that her lack of experience beats Romney's experience considering that he signed RomneyCare. But how does she make that case against Perry? She can't. And once again, wasn't one of the chief criticisms against Obama that he had never been a chief executive? And hasn't the country been suffering because he's getting OJT training? You can't beat something with nothing, and again - just trying to be completely honest - nothing is all she's got.

Perry has a clear path to winning many of them over. We'll see what happens. If Palin endorses him, he will win. Period.

"And since G.O.P. Front Runner Ronald Reagan relies upon a base of support that is on the far right wing of the Republican Party, some experts have long declared that if he wins the nomination, the G.O.P. would simply be repeating the suicidal Goldwater campaign. Ex-President Gerald Ford left no doubt about his views when he warned last month: "A very conservative Republican cannot win in a national election."
" National opinion polls continue to show Carter leading Reagan by an apparently comfortable margin of about 25%. They also show that more moderate Republicans like Ford would run better against the President"
"Reagan cannot hope to win, however, unless he moves beyond the hard-line conservative base that has sustained him since he first appeared on the national political scene as a spokesman for Goldwater himself. He has no experience in Washington politics or foreign affairs. "
"Worse perhaps than the verbal gaffe is Reagan's relentlessly simple-minded discussion of complex problems"
"One of his proposed cures for inflation is the notion that a huge tax cut will restore the productive vitality of the economy and control price rises. Most economists believe this approach is nonsense, that it would simply fuel more inflation."
"Reagan's loose statements and flabby positions will make splendid targets for Jimmy Carter. John Sears, Reagan's former campaign manager, was worried by that very problem during his year-and-a-half reign, and after Reagan fired him in late February, Sears complained publicly that Reagan does not have well-prepared policy positions. Frets Sears: "I'm not sure that he is now adequately briefed on matters on which politicians and the press and the people hold him to account."

Perry doesn't think Palin is dumb. Neither do I. Only idiots think that.
Frankly, the smarter someone is, the more the MSM hates them. Just look how they hate Scalia and Thomas. Thomas is freaking brilliant, and among the most consistent and logical jurists in American history, and the left acts like he belongs on a plantation.
Let me ask: does anyone need Obama's help to win in 2012? Any big democrats desperate for his endorsement? Will they after he's kicked out of office? Bush will have a longer term impact than Obama.

Dustin,
I was sarc-ing at #333. I'm a depleted uranium hard core Palinista.
Perry is just the latest, most bestest ABP to be pimped by this blog.

My bad,
Palin haters are so bad it's hard to know when someone is sarcastically trying to post as one.

I've heard that before. I'm probably just too ideological to understand. I grant Romney made a lot of money with Bain and that shows something impressive with respect to how the business world works. I don't want to discount that. But compared to running Texas for 11 years? Hmm.
Anyway, you're right that Perry and Bush are not of the same camp. Romney probably is more like Bush, and I don't mean that as an insult to either.
