India Claims: We Told Youse Guys Twice Bin Ladin Was Nearby Islamabad
— Ace

This would be a bit of a black eye for Bush's team, if true, because India said they told us once in mid-2007 and again in 2008.

But not much of one. Giving someone an informed hunch/opinion that someone is in the vicinity of a 4.5 million metro center isn't super-helpful, even if believed and true. (To clarify: Islamabad has a population of 1.3 million or so, but the metro area -- of which Abbottabad would be counted -- is 4.5 million.)

They did specify "in a cantonment area," which is what Osama's area was. But I don't know how much that helps, because I don't know 1, how many cantonment areas are in that area, or 2, what the hell a cantonment area even is.

So maybe I should look that up.

a temporary or semi-permanent military or police quarters.

Well that does narrow it down. But they didn't know Abbottabad, as they make no specific claim about that. And also, Abbottabad is known more as a "tourist town" than a cantonment area.

I Should Have Read The Article: Like Joncelli did, who points me to this quote:

“The urgency with which Zawahiri visited Islamabad or the area in its vicinity suggested that he was there for some purpose. We told them about Zawahiri visiting Islamabad and we also told them that we believed Osama may not be hiding in caves but in a highly urbanized area somewhere near Islamabad. Of course, nobody had spotted him and it was a conclusion we drew on the basis of the information we got,” said a top intelligence official involved in processing the information."

Yeah, that's a real "maybe, maybe not" situation. The conclusion turns out to be likely true, but before we knew bin Ladin was in Abbottabad, we really didn't know if Zawahiri was visiting him or some other person. Like someone with money to donate to the cause, or a Pakistani official who could help out, or a gay brothel, etc., etc., etc. -- a thousand other likely possibilities spring to mind, none looking less plausible than India's conclusion.

Pakistan: We Totally Had It Covered. They had Osama's compound being watched under "sharp focus" since 2003.

Since 2003? You had it under sharp focus for eight years and still didn't move the ball beyond that?

This word "sharp focus" you keep using. I dunna think it means what you think it means.

Either that, or you knew, and just refused to tell.

I know this guy is French.  I know this guy is a "philosopher".  But Bernard Henri Levi's book about Daniel Pearl pretty much makes the Indian Intelligence case that Pakistan has always been the stick poking the Al Qaida hornets nest.

Al Qaida and the Taliban is literally THE only tool the ISI has.  They have nothing else.

Posted by: wtfci at May 04, 2011 12:37 PM (qITbz)

6 And there was still the pesky issue of where wtihin this area he was, and oh yeah, whether the cowboy Bush would be loved for attacking a cantonment in the middle of friggin' Pakistan, when Pakistan at the time was supposedly hunting for him too. Except that they were trying to give him housewarming presents.

9 It's not all that helpful, as this quote from the story indicates: "“The urgency with which Zawahiri visited Islamabad or the area in its vicinity suggested that he was there for some purpose. We told them about Zawahiri visiting Islamabad and we also told them that we believed Osama may not be hiding in caves but in a highly urbanized area somewhere near Islamabad. Of course, nobody had spotted him and it was a conclusion we drew on the basis of the information we got,” said a top intelligence official involved in processing the information." There's lots and lots of people there, and lots of cantonments. So, nothing overly useful. (Quite apart from the fact that the Indians have a vested interest in discrediting the Pakis.)

46 It's not a black eye because obviously we already figured that one out on our own, and tried our best to spot him.

We also figured out a large variety of other possibilities, and tried to spot him there, too.

It was ten years of searching for him.  Of course someone guessed approximately correctly.  If they found him on a kayak in Hawaii, someone would note they had predicted he was there.  If they found him in NYC, hiding in the GZM, someone probably guessed that.

We were absolutely relentless in searching for him, but that was a very difficult task and we had other priorities, such as dismantling his operation.  He did promise more attacks against the USA up until 2004 when he went completely dark.  We had our priorities straight, and still got this lower priority while preventing another 9/11.

Well done, US Military.  Truly, they are the greatest force in human history.  There is no comparison.

It's "Lévy" (in case any of you are Googlin' it). He kinda credits himself with getting the U.S. into Libya. Kinda plausible.

And he contends, basically, that America's siding with Pakistan materially, and against India ideologically (because, not being a dictatorship, it was "anarchic"), roundaboutly gave rise to the aspirant Caliphate as we know it, and that undoing that is the job the U.S. is stuck with now—and doing totally wrong.

Also plausible.

There has been a ton of news stories about actual-known terrorists either being 'lost' in the US, plus we have given citizenship to at least 3 people that we tried for terrorist charges, plus the stories about Homeland Security not allowing ICE to arrest/detain any illegal crossing the border, etc.

Okay, I am looking at the reuters photo and I have a question.

The guy who is clearly bin laden's kid, he looks just like him, is bleeding from his ears, but doesn't appear to have any bullet wounds above the waist. You can see a blood splotch right near his hip, but would that result in him bleeding out of his ears?

Is it possible he was shot in the back of the head at such an angle that the bullet didn't come out the front of his head?

Entry wounds are often hard to spot. Exit wounds are pretty obvious. Even Corpse Man Biden would be able to spot them.

101 “The urgency with which Zawahiri visited Islamabad or the area in its vicinity suggested that he was there for some purpose.

Yes and the urgency with which Sasquatch walked across a field in Northwest Washington state suggested he was there for some reason too!

Isn't it amazing how all these logical conclusions and associations are made after someone is found? Intelligence is an art. Part of that art is following logical, verifiable pieces of evidence and drawing conclusions. If purported sightings alone had value. then we would have found Sasquatch already. But combine that sighting with an unusual pile of dung, a strange prehistoric hovel and a pile of unread GQ's at the door then and maybe then you found him. Either that or Barney Frank';s vacation hideaway. But you get my point?

This is Indian Intelligence. If there ever was an oxymoron that is it. By the way, if they knew so much about Pakistan and AQ, why didn't they stop the attacks on their country?

149 This would be a bit of a black eye for Bush's team, if true, because...

Bush already has a black eye for other reasons, like half-hearted prosecution of the Afghan and Iraq wars on his watch.

Terrorists/rebels hiding in a mosque? No problem, reduce it to rubble; no more hiding place. Al Sadr trying to be a "leader" of his own fundie terror group? No problem, kill the guy with a shot to the head. Iranian RG agents captured on Iraqi territory? No problem, interrogate them then send 'em back to Tehran in body bags. Iranian-made IEDs being used against our personnel? No problem, a fifteen-minute missile bombardment of the Revolutionary Guard headquarters in Tehran should send a clear message, with a warning that further interference would result in more devastation.

None of these things happened. As a result, each conflict dragged out longer and cost more American lives than they should have.

I spent some time in India, very many years ago.

"Cantonment" or "cantonment area", in that part of the world, effectvely means "neighborhood", sort of like "Brentwood", but possibly a generic,un-named private-ish neighborhood.

Without a name, the description is minimally helpful; it does eliminate, usually, the downtown areas, and the slums, and that is some help, but in a "metro area", there's still quite a lot of ground to cover.

Throw in active subversion, like the ISI, and the specific "cantonment area" could change on a daily basis, much like a password; determining the correct password, the minute AFTER it changes, is of small value.

I don't doubt the Indians had some information, good information, and they were pointed the correct way, but it looks like the ISI could have, and probably did, subvert any truly usefully specific information they had.

Obviously, the money we (the US/GWB/Congress) gave to Pakistan was wasted.
