Interesting: Anti-American Movies Flop In America, But Make Some Money Overseas
— Ace

Thus, these movies aren't as money-losing as it seems.

Several questions enter my mind. Given that Hollywood is playing for the anti-American foreign crowd, pandering to them, and calling itself brave for doing so, why can it not also pander to (get this) the American crowd at home? They always tell us they have to make G.I. Joe multinational and Captain America "not a flag-waver" because that would be bad for business overseas.

Isn't it strange they don't mind awful US business if they can recoup costs from an anti-American foreign audience? Huh. Why doesn't that work in reverse?

By the way, "The Kingdom" is used there as a "control" because the analyst says it's "politically neutral."

Let me just say that while this movie was rejected by conservatives when it came out, because it does in fact feature a few lines suggesting "we're just like they are" and "we're part of the cycle of violence," it is otherwise pretty... well, maybe it's not pro-American but it's definitely anti-Al Qaeda. The terrorists are depicted accurately -- by which I mean, monstrously -- and there is a shoot-out in the end, in an Al Qaeda dominated neighborhood of Ridyah (I'm guessing), which is just dynamite, and maybe the movie is trying to avoid easy rah-rah moments but damn if every time one of those bastards got his head ventilated if I didn't feel a rah-rah moment.

The analyst is right, I guess, to call it "politically neutral." And maybe conservatives reject it because they don't like neutrality when it comes to terrorists. (I agree.) But actually mere neutrality, rather than active jihadi-supporting anti-American terrorist-sucking, actually makes it more conservative that just about any movie I can think of in dealing with this topic since 9/11.

All I can say is edit out, in your head, those two or three "cycle of violence" moments and what you're left with is a brutal depiction of how vicious and backwards and ugly terrorists are (and, also, really not very good "warriors," either, so much as barely-competent murderers with make-pretend military-style ranks) and Americans killing the shit out of them.

Thanks to geoff, who had this in the sidebar.

5 "The Kingdom" as originally filmed didn't have the platitutdes - they added them after a test audience enjoyed the jihadis being ventilated a little too much for the studio's comfort.  Regardless, I thought it was great - jihadi head explosions in HD and 5.1 are hard to beat.

6 I'm not sure I'd classify "The Hurt Locker" as anti-American.  It's a film about combat addiction and adrenaline junkies.  But only one character can be called that.

9 I didn't consider Hurt Locker or The Kingdom to be anti-American and they both did pretty well, so there's all the evidence Hollywood needs to produce more pro-American, or at least neutral, terrorist related films. For some reason I still don't see it happening.

And Green Zone was horrible.

10 >>>"The Kingdom" as originally filmed didn't have the platitutdes - they added them after a test audience enjoyed the jihadis being ventilated a little too much for the studio's comfort. I never heard that but I did get the sense that the platitudes were defensive CYA to protect against charges of "war-mongering neo-cons!" but that it's heart was really with killing Al Qaeda.

That trend may not be enough to save movies like this. I bring up the James Bond example.

Timothy Dalton's two movies in the late 80s got crushed in the US market, but did very well overseas. That didn't stop MGM from locking the Bond films out for six years and demanding a new Bond actor.

Once Pierce Brosnan debuted in GoldenEye, the American market was bullish on Bond again.

13 Slightly OT but important question.

In the past two weeks I've counted two news stories of women who have had semen put into their food/water by pervs. Here's the thing: both times, the reporters went out of their way to point out that the women already knew what semen tastes like. Why did they do that?

18 As a screenwriter, I can tell you, these movies didn't get green lit because they were trying to curry favor with overseas audiences. They were green lit because Hollywood is an insular community that swallows every far left trope hook line and sinker. When we see the MSM trot out a journo-list style meme and see it for what it is, they never question it. So they don't really sea these movies as anti-American or even as pushing an agenda. Everyone they know hates the war can't fathom anyone supporting it. They know NO ONE who thinks differently. Also, those movies are all flops even counting foreign box office. All movies are expected to make half their money from foreign box office. The formula is this; a movie has to make 3 times its production cost to make money. Also, the theatrical run is now seen as kinda like advertising for home video.

34 I haven't been in a movie theatre in a while.  I've reached the point in my "old age" (get off my lawn!!11!!) that if I know the actors are a bunch of lefties, I don't want a dollar doing to them.  This from a woman (me) who was a member of an Atlanta theatre company for eight years, and who was proud of being a lefty.  Sort of.

Funny.  I married a lefty from a very liberal family, and now my husband and I are the two conservatives in my husband's family (his dad is a swish), and my one remaining family member, my sis, is as far left as you can lean.

When Hollywood begins making films glorifying our military and what they have dealt with, I'll go back.

And Charlie Sheen can suck it, with his nasty, brown teeth.

True enough, but what's missing is that films aren't made with air. They have to be funded. What the article implies is that it's easier to get funding overseas in hopes of FBO return. And from the little that I've read, right now more foreign dumbshits with tax credits are willing to cough up money than traditional US sources.  Dreamworks auditioning for Bollywood money, etc.

The Pacific was good except for the fact Hanks couldn't help showing what a bunch of evil racists the Marines were toward the Japanese.  I've finished reading Dr. E. B. Sledge's book (Sledgehammer in the movie), and he was an educated young man from a wealthy family.

What he describes that he faced is bone-chilling.  Hanks and Spielberg barely touched on the subject with a brief scene of captured Marines who had been used for live bayonet practice.

What he experienced changed him forever.  Really, his book should be a movie, without Hank's and Spielberg's involvement.

59 Going by the graph in the article, NONE of these films would be considered 'gold mines.'  If you're trying to attract foreign investors, why go anti- OR pro-American, and just make a movie to make $$$$?

Going anti-American is where they want to be-- if it's really about making money, why not make something like 'Home Alone' that isn't political and will make it hand over fist?  That should bring in money, foreign or domestic.  But the anti-Bush, anti-American -Republican -Patriotism thing is what they're about.  They'll lose money or barely make any because they want to bash the US and all that other stuff.

The Pacific War was my Father's war.  He  hated the Japanese after the war,  as did a lot of men like him that were in that war. I knew them, those were the kind of men I grew up around.

He finally gave up on it when a very nice young Japanese woman stayed with my parents for a semester as an exchange student.  She was a very sweet and gentle person, who couldn't be more unlike the generation of cruel xenophobes that waged the war for the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

And what they did in China was even more bone-chilling,  But yeah, like Hanks said, it was all about race.  What a tool.

Isn't that the one where Bond cries.  I think its the only one.  Hated that.  Course I guess you could count the one where the guy gets the rope ball to the nads as crying, but that seems reasonable.

Hurt Locker was a pretty good movie, but the problem was that idiots started thinking that the portrayal of life in Iraq was accurate.

Still, it was worth making it and supporting just so Cameron could get his Oscar hopes jammed up his blue tailed ass.

Octopussy might be the best Moore Bond, and tramples all over Connery's unofficial comeback attempt. As previously mentioned, that was a weak remake of Thunderball, which is Sir Sean at his coolest.

175 CDR M, when Battle for Marjah is over, go over to the producer's piece at HBO.  The Marines invited him right in, no limits on what he could show.  At one point, he says a Marine was enjoying killing Taliban a bit much, and he asked the officer if he should stop filming.  The answer?  "No.  That's what we do."  Oo-rah.

Some other dad says to me, "I'm addicted to Glee." I didn't know what to do and didn't want to be rude but I said, "What's Glee?" Turns out to be a TV show? Then he says it's a musical? I think I grimaced.

I hate it when people confuse me with this stuff. Couldn't they just talk about the intricacies of the Wisconsin labor bill? or some Supreme court case? Maybe he was trying to make chick conversation.

Responding to various people:

For Your Eyes Only would be my other nominee for best Moore Bond. Just like Octopussy, it had really bad humor at times, jaw-dropping stunts, and Roger old enough to play a good, serious Bond without looking like the cryptkeeper (which he did in his last one, the one with Walken).

Spy has amazing stunts and Rog at his coolest, but that wooden plank of a leading lady just ruins much of the movie for me. This is where the Bond people first started with the "Let's have a woman who's equally as good a spy as Bond" bullshit.

Glee is made mainly for dumb kids - it's the High School Musical of TV, and it gives liberals a viewing alternative if watching Jethro Gibbs might make them grow their first chest hair.

Lucy Lawless has held up remarkably well, and God bless her for showing that off every week.

And Deadwood rocks.

195 I only saw The Kingdom once, and I don't agree with the "cycle of violence" characterization, if you're referring to the last scene. This is how I saw it: You've got the Saudi kid, grandson of that cocksucker who got killed. He's getting an earful of how he's got to kill the infidel, avenge the righteous, blah, blah. Very accurate. They hate us and will never stop trying to kill us. Ever. Then you've got Jamie Foxx, who was doing just fine until he gets exposed to the shitriffic world of Muslims, who are bloodthirsty, ravenous animals who were about to saw his friend's head off on videotape. He's realized that these people are a fucking cancer and what they need is a white hot shot of fucking nuclear chemotherapy. Also very accurate. What I took away is that the only unending "cycle of violence" is on the part of these filthy goatsucking subhumans. And that I could have pulled the trigger on that kid with less emotion than clipping a toenail. Great film. 4 out of 5 dick-flavored Pez.

She gave a Q&A. Nice lady but way way too much work on the face.

She said she almost killed Mel Gibson with the bow. It was a real bow with a real heavy draw and it was a real arrow. Her arm started shaking and the director had to yell CUT. She almost shot Mel. they eventually got her another bow that was a prop.

258 @184 -- For Your Eyes Only would be my other nominee for best Moore Bond. Just like Octopussy, it had really bad humor at times, jaw-dropping stunts, and Roger old enough to play a good, serious Bond without looking like the cryptkeeper (which he did in his last one, the one with Walken).

Unlike Sean Connery, Roger Moore didn't do any of the actual underwater scenes.  (He did do some of the climbing scenes though).

259 Plus if the star of the film is also the producer, the movie will always suck. What, Battlefield Earth not good enough for you? Heh. The problem is, the producer is the boss. And since 99% of Hollywood actors are egomaniac retards.....mixing the two creates a black hole of cinematic suck.

Even with all the great home theaters there's still nothing like going to the theaters for me. Walking in on a hot summer day and feeling that cold a/c and smelling the popcorn, playing a game or two, picking out your munchables and then the movie itself on that huge screen and booming sound system. Ahh, good times. Too bad the people making the movies are such shitbags. Now ima pop open the first corona of the night and watch Unforgiven.

I decided on the spur of the moment at about 9 on a saturday night to go see the King's Speech. The Local 22 mega movie house didn't have another one untill 10:30 so we had to go to the "Arts" theatre.

The "Arts" theatre is one in which all the anti-american or "arts" "films" are shown to all the Washingto DC area douchebags. They brag about driving there from their far-away suburb. It's close to me, so I warned hubby, and we went.

As I expected it was filled with middle aged liberals with little glasses, goatees, and scarves and a surprisingly large number of little gay boys in skinny jeans. That must be where they go. They all knew to line up against the wall until the rude ticket tearer showed up.

I expected arugula and jicama concessions but it was the usual fare. I expect this is what all movies will be in the future.

304 It iffy going by foreign box office. Often the foreign rights have been sold for a lump sum so it's a good chance the studio isn't getting the 50-55% they would be here. Also, because the foreign distributors have a set cost the the longer they leave it in the theaters the more they will make. You don't know either how much the theme of the film has been altered by the dub or sub. The film could be subtlely changed to be more or less anit0us to suit the market. Notice the main factor seems to be France and french speaking nations. I would expect the french dub gets a much more anti-American spin.

Yeah, there's dvd players with Netflix streaming, Wii and some other game boxes have it too and there's stand alone boxes for streaming to your tv. Picture is good if you have a fast connection, they dole it out in three tiers, low, average and high. When i had DSL at 1.5 mbps i always got the average tier and the picture was ok, now that i'm on cable at 7 mbps i get high and the picture is great. Download time was under 30 seconds for both my 1.5 and 7mbps connections. Selection is pretty good, don't expect a movie to show up until well after it's been out on dvd for a while though, unless it wasn't much of a moneymaker at the box office.

The picture quality can drop off pretty dramatically if you do anything else with your connection while watching (sometimes even if you aren't), and the selection is absolutely terrible.  Netflix is having all kinds of trouble getting major studio contracts.  The only reason you see any movies you recognize at all is because they back-doored a Starz On-Demand contract that allows them to show whatever Starz is allowed to show.  It's set to expire and it won't be allowed to happen again.

349 The picture quality can drop off pretty dramatically if you do anything else with your connection while watching (sometimes even if you aren't), and the selection is absolutely terrible.

I haven't noticed any of the issues with connectivity or speed that other people have mentioned, and we run multiple computers on the network along with the Wii.  We're running at about 3 mbps.

As for selection, I suppose I have eclectic tastes.  I don't care about most of the series the Morons go on about, and am happier with old movies and television.  Maybe it's not so apparent to me.

369 I liked The Kingdom, and the shootout at the end was amazing.
What did the character say about terrorists? We're going to have to kill them all? Sounds entirely reasonable to me. The fact that the jihadi says the same means the other side (the vast majority of non terrorists) must wipe out the cancer.  I didn't really get a whiff of moral equivalence because in the movie the terrorists were portrayed as true villains: mowing down innocents with automatic weapons, bombing a crowd, bombing the first-responder rescue workers, kidnapping, etc.

If the producer decided to put that bit in after learning how much people liked seeing terrorists' heads filled with bullet holes, then the moral equivalence bit was as effective as a fart in a windstorm IMO.

390 Heat a small mug of water to nearly boiling.  Add all the cider vinegar that you can stand, sweetened with as much honey as you want.

Put some ginger and molasses in it and you get switchel, the gatorade of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (and probably earlier, with slightly different ingredients). Surprisingly good - tastes like gingery applejuice, except with a molasses flavor, if that makes any sense.

Download from filestube.com then. It searches all of the upload sites like Rapidshare and gives you links to all the files for that movie. The problem with torrents is that people get nailed for sharing rather than the retrieving part. So there's no risk if you do it this way.

You just go to that site, type in the movie name and year and multi-part or one part files come up. Sometimes, after going through the trouble,  you open the movie to find that it's dubbed in another language, but you get better at figuring out beforehand whether that's likely or not. Also, filestube enables you to search by a particular upload site which is useful because megaupload generally has previews of what you'll be downloading if it's a single part file.

422 316 Can you get your Netflix stream onto the big screen? Good picture? Download time? Selection?

Posted by: FlaviusJulius at February 25, 2011 09:45 PM (qIHlG)

if you have a WII and a wireless router setup, you can do it that way, or you can do it from most any laptop or PC with a long 9-pin VGA cable, if your big screen TV has a 9-pin VGA port on th back (most do these days)

Posted by: Sgt. Batguano at February 26, 2011 07:58 AM (yCH89)

423 also, they are making new TV's that have built-in wifi cards that can stream it right to your big screen

Posted by: Sgt. Batguano at February 26, 2011 07:59 AM (yCH89)

424 also, some newer TV's laptops and PC's are switching over to the DVI & HDMI interface, check your gear and see what you have, if the video card on your laptop or PC has a HDMI or DVI "out" use that instead of the VGA, you'll get a better picture.

Posted by: Sgt. Batguano at February 26, 2011 08:04 AM (yCH89)

425 one more thing, you can buy a DVI to HDMI adapter cable, they are both digital formats and will deliver true hi-def, VGA is analog, you can buy adapters that will convert to DVI or HDMI but they will not deliver true hi-def

Posted by: Sgt. Batguano at February 26, 2011 08:07 AM (yCH89)

426 last thing, if you have cable internets you should be good to stream HD (depending on your computer), if you have DSL it's probably gonna be a bit choppy.
