— Ace Thus, these movies aren't as money-losing as it seems.
Several questions enter my mind. Given that Hollywood is playing for the anti-American foreign crowd, pandering to them, and calling itself brave for doing so, why can it not also pander to (get this) the American crowd at home? They always tell us they have to make G.I. Joe multinational and Captain America "not a flag-waver" because that would be bad for business overseas.
Isn't it strange they don't mind awful US business if they can recoup costs from an anti-American foreign audience? Huh. Why doesn't that work in reverse?
By the way, "The Kingdom" is used there as a "control" because the analyst says it's "politically neutral."
Let me just say that while this movie was rejected by conservatives when it came out, because it does in fact feature a few lines suggesting "we're just like they are" and "we're part of the cycle of violence," it is otherwise pretty... well, maybe it's not pro-American but it's definitely anti-Al Qaeda. The terrorists are depicted accurately -- by which I mean, monstrously -- and there is a shoot-out in the end, in an Al Qaeda dominated neighborhood of Ridyah (I'm guessing), which is just dynamite, and maybe the movie is trying to avoid easy rah-rah moments but damn if every time one of those bastards got his head ventilated if I didn't feel a rah-rah moment.
The analyst is right, I guess, to call it "politically neutral." And maybe conservatives reject it because they don't like neutrality when it comes to terrorists. (I agree.) But actually mere neutrality, rather than active jihadi-supporting anti-American terrorist-sucking, actually makes it more conservative that just about any movie I can think of in dealing with this topic since 9/11.
All I can say is edit out, in your head, those two or three "cycle of violence" moments and what you're left with is a brutal depiction of how vicious and backwards and ugly terrorists are (and, also, really not very good "warriors," either, so much as barely-competent murderers with make-pretend military-style ranks) and Americans killing the shit out of them.
Thanks to geoff, who had this in the sidebar.

That trend may not be enough to save movies like this. I bring up the James Bond example.
Timothy Dalton's two movies in the late 80s got crushed in the US market, but did very well overseas. That didn't stop MGM from locking the Bond films out for six years and demanding a new Bond actor.
Once Pierce Brosnan debuted in GoldenEye, the American market was bullish on Bond again.

Also, let us not forget that there have been some pro-American, pro-conservative movies that have done gangbusters at the box office.
2007's 300 - a bunch of noble democrats facing impossible odds curbstomp Iranians
2008's The Dark Knight - the Batman as Bush angle has been covered in many other places
2008's Iron Man - the ultimate popcorn movie defense of capitalism and the individualist spirit of enterprise

Also, those movies are all flops even counting foreign box office. All movies are expected to make half their money from foreign box office. The formula is this; a movie has to make 3 times its production cost to make money. Also, the theatrical run is now seen as kinda like advertising for home video. True enough, but what's missing is that films aren't made with air. They have to be funded. What the article implies is that it's easier to get funding overseas in hopes of FBO return. And from the little that I've read, right now more foreign dumbshits with tax credits are willing to cough up money than traditional US sources. Dreamworks auditioning for Bollywood money, etc.

It doesn't seem like I'm asking much to have a movie where the Americans make a terrorist ear necklace and doesn't star an ex pro wrestler or some shit. How about a movie where the Americans are making a human Pollack of some terrorist nation, are unquestionably the good guys, and not written for retards. The Pacific was good except for the fact Hanks couldn't help showing what a bunch of evil racists the Marines were toward the Japanese. I've finished reading Dr. E. B. Sledge's book (Sledgehammer in the movie), and he was an educated young man from a wealthy family.
What he describes that he faced is bone-chilling. Hanks and Spielberg barely touched on the subject with a brief scene of captured Marines who had been used for live bayonet practice.
What he experienced changed him forever. Really, his book should be a movie, without Hank's and Spielberg's involvement.

Going anti-American is where they want to be-- if it's really about making money, why not make something like 'Home Alone' that isn't political and will make it hand over fist? That should bring in money, foreign or domestic. But the anti-Bush, anti-American -Republican -Patriotism thing is what they're about. They'll lose money or barely make any because they want to bash the US and all that other stuff.

The Pacific War was my Father's war. He hated the Japanese after the war, as did a lot of men like him that were in that war. I knew them, those were the kind of men I grew up around.
He finally gave up on it when a very nice young Japanese woman stayed with my parents for a semester as an exchange student. She was a very sweet and gentle person, who couldn't be more unlike the generation of cruel xenophobes that waged the war for the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
And what they did in China was even more bone-chilling, But yeah, like Hanks said, it was all about race. What a tool.

I was fortunate. When I was a kid, a salesman that came into my dad's store set me down in the warehouse one day and told me of his experience being in the Baatan death march. Truly an eye-opener for me. My dad came back while he was talking, listened a few minutes and walked away, not telling the salesman to stop. Dad was in the Pacific too.
Whenever you get the chance sit down with these guys, please do. They're willing to talk about it now. They're also seeing the history they made being re-written.

Our son's been fortunate on Okinawa to meet a number of old Pacific vets who come on the bases and speak to the kids.
As he was leaving for Okinawa, his lib paternal grandmother reminded him that "The Japanese are much more polite and civilized than we are. Please be respectful." He knew better, kissed her on her cheek, and left.

Spartacus: Blood and Dongs is a pale imitation replete with shitty dialogue worthy of a Star War prequel.

Hurt Locker was a pretty good movie, but the problem was that idiots started thinking that the portrayal of life in Iraq was accurate.
Still, it was worth making it and supporting just so Cameron could get his Oscar hopes jammed up his blue tailed ass.
Octopussy might be the best Moore Bond, and tramples all over Connery's unofficial comeback attempt. As previously mentioned, that was a weak remake of Thunderball, which is Sir Sean at his coolest.

Responding to various people:
For Your Eyes Only would be my other nominee for best Moore Bond. Just like Octopussy, it had really bad humor at times, jaw-dropping stunts, and Roger old enough to play a good, serious Bond without looking like the cryptkeeper (which he did in his last one, the one with Walken).
Spy has amazing stunts and Rog at his coolest, but that wooden plank of a leading lady just ruins much of the movie for me. This is where the Bond people first started with the "Let's have a woman who's equally as good a spy as Bond" bullshit.
Glee is made mainly for dumb kids - it's the High School Musical of TV, and it gives liberals a viewing alternative if watching Jethro Gibbs might make them grow their first chest hair.
Lucy Lawless has held up remarkably well, and God bless her for showing that off every week.
And Deadwood rocks.

She gave a Q&A. Nice lady but way way too much work on the face.
She said she almost killed Mel Gibson with the bow. It was a real bow with a real heavy draw and it was a real arrow. Her arm started shaking and the director had to yell CUT. She almost shot Mel. they eventually got her another bow that was a prop.

Of course, the scene in the saloon with Munny and Little Bill was a classic ...

"I've killed about everything that's walked and crawled at one time or another. Now I'm gonna kill you Little Bill, for what you done to Ned"

I decided on the spur of the moment at about 9 on a saturday night to go see the King's Speech. The Local 22 mega movie house didn't have another one untill 10:30 so we had to go to the "Arts" theatre.
The "Arts" theatre is one in which all the anti-american or "arts" "films" are shown to all the Washingto DC area douchebags. They brag about driving there from their far-away suburb. It's close to me, so I warned hubby, and we went.
As I expected it was filled with middle aged liberals with little glasses, goatees, and scarves and a surprisingly large number of little gay boys in skinny jeans. That must be where they go. They all knew to line up against the wall until the rude ticket tearer showed up.

She was a Bond girl twice, but so was Martine Beswick and Eunice Gayson. And actually, if you count the opening credits female silhouettes, Beswick was a Bond girl three times.

Yeah, there's dvd players with Netflix streaming, Wii and some other game boxes have it too and there's stand alone boxes for streaming to your tv. Picture is good if you have a fast connection, they dole it out in three tiers, low, average and high. When i had DSL at 1.5 mbps i always got the average tier and the picture was ok, now that i'm on cable at 7 mbps i get high and the picture is great. Download time was under 30 seconds for both my 1.5 and 7mbps connections. Selection is pretty good, don't expect a movie to show up until well after it's been out on dvd for a while though, unless it wasn't much of a moneymaker at the box office.

The picture quality can drop off pretty dramatically if you do anything else with your connection while watching (sometimes even if you aren't), and the selection is absolutely terrible. Netflix is having all kinds of trouble getting major studio contracts. The only reason you see any movies you recognize at all is because they back-doored a Starz On-Demand contract that allows them to show whatever Starz is allowed to show. It's set to expire and it won't be allowed to happen again.

I haven't noticed any of the issues with connectivity or speed that other people have mentioned, and we run multiple computers on the network along with the Wii. We're running at about 3 mbps.
As for selection, I suppose I have eclectic tastes. I don't care about most of the series the Morons go on about, and am happier with old movies and television. Maybe it's not so apparent to me.

What did the character say about terrorists? We're going to have to kill them all? Sounds entirely reasonable to me. The fact that the jihadi says the same means the other side (the vast majority of non terrorists) must wipe out the cancer. I didn't really get a whiff of moral equivalence because in the movie the terrorists were portrayed as true villains: mowing down innocents with automatic weapons, bombing a crowd, bombing the first-responder rescue workers, kidnapping, etc.
If the producer decided to put that bit in after learning how much people liked seeing terrorists' heads filled with bullet holes, then the moral equivalence bit was as effective as a fart in a windstorm IMO.

Put some ginger and molasses in it and you get switchel, the gatorade of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (and probably earlier, with slightly different ingredients). Surprisingly good - tastes like gingery applejuice, except with a molasses flavor, if that makes any sense.

Download from filestube.com then. It searches all of the upload sites like Rapidshare and gives you links to all the files for that movie. The problem with torrents is that people get nailed for sharing rather than the retrieving part. So there's no risk if you do it this way.
You just go to that site, type in the movie name and year and multi-part or one part files come up. Sometimes, after going through the trouble, you open the movie to find that it's dubbed in another language, but you get better at figuring out beforehand whether that's likely or not. Also, filestube enables you to search by a particular upload site which is useful because megaupload generally has previews of what you'll be downloading if it's a single part file.
