— DrewM What's the outcome of this mission? According to Marc Ambinder's sources, getting rid of Qadaffi.
End game? Admin official says: "we have multiple scenarios, but none of them end with Qadaffi in power."
Might be nice if the President mentioned that at some point, no?
As for the US military role, right now according Vice Adm. William Gortney, Director of the Joint Staff we're taking the lead but will hand it over to our allies soon.
But echoing comments made by President Obama this afternoon, Gortney said the United States will bring its “unique capabilities” to the front end of the operation to enable the enforcement of a no-fly zone led by international partners. Gortney acknowledged that the U.S. military command and control and logistics capabilities could be tapped for the operation, as well as its aerial refueling tanker fleet. The airstrikes began after the sun had set in Libya, delaying the damage assessment for several hours. Once coalition forces confirm that Libya’s surface to air assets have been taken out, the U.S. military could deploy Global Hawk unmanned surveillance aircraft for the assessment, in addition to other assets, Gortney said. That would presumably include satellite imagery.
The coalition includes U.S., British, French, Italian and Canadian forces, in addition to other countries—including Arab nations—who have asked not to be named publicly yet.
Meanwhile, the President explains from Rio why we are doing this.
I am deeply aware of the risks of any military action, no matter what limits we place on it. I want the American people to know that the use of force is not our first choice and itÂ’s not a choice that I make lightly. But we cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people that there will be no mercy, and his forces step up their assaults on cities like Benghazi and Misurata, where innocent men and women face brutality and death at the hands of their own government....I've acted after consulting with my national security team, and Republican and Democratic leaders of Congress. And in the coming hours and days, my administration will keep the American people fully informed. But make no mistake: Today we are part of a broad coalition. We are answering the calls of a threatened people. And we are acting in the interests of the United States and the world.
This whole notion of "acting in the interests of the United States" is simply argument by assertion. What interests? How will the US be impacted at all if Gadaffi stays or goes?
If there's any "doctrine" here it's, "We are answering the calls of a threatened people." If that's really the standard we better hope like hell the North Koreans, Cubans, Chinese, Saudis, et al don't manage to get on Skype and get people on their side. If they do, we may find ourselves in a lot of wars.
Amazing that this is the President who went out for ice cream while Iranians were begging for some supportive words while they were being slaughtered by their government but now we jump into a war with no debate and no discussion of the parameters or end state.

If so....precisely when did he become illegitimate? He has been in power there for some 40 years....and asI understand it, he had been a bit of a favorite at the UN...having, as he did, a spot on the UN committee on Human rights.
2. When an insurgent group attempts armed insurrection against a legitimate government....is that government expected to meekly acquiesce, or is it reasonable that they employ force to surpress the uprising?
3. When, exactly, is the no-fly zone going to be imposed over Barain? I understand that they are "killing their own people" there. How about Yemen?
I have never had a good feeling about Gadaffi.....someone could have put a bullet into him any time and I wouldn't have lost a bit of sleep. I was really hoping that we would have wiped him out when we conducted those air strikes all those years ago...
Nonetheless, I have a very bad feeling about this intervention....
To say nothing of the UN's philosophical underpinning for their decision to authorize force....very, very shaky!

Qaddafi has been in power for decades. Why only now have our "national interests" become jeopardized by his further rule? He's going to commit atrocities? He's committed atrocities for decades to a yawning Western press. He has supported terror groups from his first day as dictator.Hell, he and Obama were practically pals. Did the cuff links Qaddafi sent him for the Inauguration start turning green or something?
What are the terms of victory in this military action? Qaddafi's forces dug in around the capital and the rebels dispersed elsewhere? Stalemate, in other words, which means Qaddafi will bide his time until the West gets tired of it, which it inevitably does, then he will proceed to reconsolidate power, committing atrocities as he goes. So, if regime change is not the goal then this whole exercise is a waste of time and money and is not worth the life of a single service man or woman.
But it is obvious what this is all about. For Bill, it was Monica .. for The Won, it is all about reelection.

I was just reading the War Powers act...
SEC. 2. (c) The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces. He then must report to Congress what he did, and why, in certain timeframes... but from what I read, 2.C LIMITS the President...
And I sure don't see any of those conditions applying... as there is no National Emergency, and OUR Territories are not threatened.

I'm kinda on Qadaffi's side on this one. Intervening in a country's civil war sets a bad precedence. Might give others an excuse (no matter how flimsy) to intervene in YOUR country at some point...
Qadaffi can get a "win" out of this, too: Put some bodies of women and children near a US cruise missile strike, and loudly proclaim "Obama killed them!"

I will continue to b---h at him because, if he was going to do this, he should have done this a while ago. By now, it's probably difficult to accomplish anything without ground troops. Yeah, I don't think it's realistic to get rid of Qaddafi at this point unless you actually want to invade. He's a fool if he thinks that. And his statements to that effect are idiotic--maybe he's trying to establish a bargaining chip, but I can't imagine Qaddafi takes that seriously. He just winds up looking weak.
As far as America's interest, though (and that if we're going topple one dictatorship we need be topple a bunch more of them)--this is the same argument liberals had over Iraq. We have limitations in our abilities. By all means, I see the argument that we can't do everything. There's merit to that argument. It doesn't follow that we should not engage in actions like this, merely because we can't take care of all of these instances, especially when there are tens if not hundreds of thousands of lives on the line and especially when it would get rid of a guy who's long been a thorn in America's side. Just because you can't solve every injustice and stop all massacres in the world doesn't mean you cease trying to stop them at all.

Air strikes by Western forces near Libya's city of Misrata have attacked a military airport where Muammar Gaddafi's loyalists are based, two residents have told Reuters, denying reports on Libyan state TV that fuel depots were hit.
Muammar Gaddafi's loyalists? Do they mean the army of the Libyan government? Last I checked they are the ones that run the STATE TV. Let's be honest here. We are there to support a rebellion against the current government. I'm beginning to think half of this is to save France's face for being stupid enough to officially recognize the rebels as the legit government to begin with. Since when are the French all gung ho anyway?

the difference is that Bush got Congress's OK to invade Iraq...
War powers act gives the President some leeway, but not Carte Blanche to do anything he wants.
President needs either a decleration of war (wwII), authorization by Congress (Iraq and Afganistan) OR National Emergency, OR American troops, or Territory must be in danger (or an allies IF there is a Ratified defense pact with them).
I really do not see how helping Rebels in Libya is covered under the War Powers Act, without cover from Congress.

As per Wiki: Libya: about 6.5 million people, roughly 90% in 3 coastal cities, with about 90% of the country essentially uninhabited (and borderline habitable). Effectively, the neighbors are the ones also on the coast: Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria. The rest are on the other side of the Sahara desert, and with few access points, and they usually don't pass as Libyans.
I see failure due to political reasons as very much more likely than due to military reasons.
Let's simplify the Libyan Question:
Since it looks like there is a good chance for regime change in Libya, what are the potential outcomes, ordered by most favorable to the US and allies, to the least?
1. Q retains power.
Q. is a more-or-less known quantity, but if he stays in power, he will be much more of a problem. He knows how to run a country, at least better than the Muslim Brotherhood, and he knows how to deal with the West, at least businesses that like his money. His oil brings him lots of money, so he can afford to cause all sorts of trouble: rent mercenaries from Chad, Sudan, Niger, ... (real popular with the Libyans), finance & harbor terrorists, pursue nukes again, funnel hundreds of thousands of refugees through Libya to Europe.
2. Egypt, and maybe Algeria invade, and partition Libya.
Might happen. But Egypt is in political turmoil, and may yet become an Islamic regime.
3. Islamists, most likely the MB, manage to take over, or obtain heavy influence in the new Libyan regime. My guess is that they will in fact do what I suspect Q. might do, only on a larger scale.
However, the MB has never run a country, and judging by the way Islamists run their concerns, they are inept and, like just about all tribalists, will end up fighting over the Libyan oil money and "people" money, like a dog over the piece of meat the other dog has. The sizable majority of the ~6.5 million Libyans are quite well aware of Europe's standard of living: cell phones, the internet, etc. How likely is it that they will give these things up to become Shari'a-compliant?
I see Q as a very-serious-but-short-term threat. I think he, or his sons, will try for PanAm 103 Parts 2 - ... simply for revenge. Let's end this before it happens.
The MB or other Islamists are a very serious long-term threat, but they are marginally competent. Worst case, giving them control of Libya (the keys to the car) will result in Libya being driven into a ditch within a year.
Egyptians are also aware of Western "stuff", and the lab experiment of Libya, Right Next Door, just might wake up many Egyptians, Algerians and Tunisians.
This is a big risk, but it helps blunt the Islamist cause in the Muslim world.

The liberal media is orgasmic over the thoughtful reasoning of Obama to halt the wanton killing of innocents in Lybia, however, Bush the Butcher created an unlawful coalition that attacked the innocent Iraqi people for the purpose of evening the score for the attempted murder of GHW Bush, and to steal Iraqi oil. Only elitist liberals have sufficient brain function to analyze these events, and conservatives should continue as Barack Obama said, "to sit down and shut up."

Last month I went to a baby shower of a friend of the wife's and one of the guys (who was at our wedding) brought this stuff called Four Loko from Mexico. It is banned in the States, but is carbonated and has fruity flavors. It is like supercharged wine cooler, which is no doubt why it is banned, since like Cisco stupid high schoolers would chug it like wine coolers and die from alcohol poisoning.

8. saving our resources against much scarier countries as NK , Iran,
9. if the reasons we are going in are humanitarian , (laudable ) but why not NK, Yemen, darfur, somalia, etc. etc.
10. why not let Europe take care of their interests, and Help save the citizens that are in danger. We are in two wars are they helping us?
Obama had everything bad to say like any good leftist did about Bush's murderous war, as did his cohorts and political party. so i'm a little bit cranky that I am to be supportive of this action which i find no american benefit in, with exception of doing a good deed, (if it doesn't end up a hezbollah , hamas run state ) and as we've seen from last year on Iran citizens were ignored, yemen? and others but this seems to be where a line that i cannot see is drawn for Obama to act. so there's my mind bend.

The Four Loko ban was stupid, college kids drink and do idiotic things, and sometimes they die, it isn't anything new but suddenly OMG eleventy!1!1! kids are drinking a drink that combines caffiene and alcohol and that's causing them to do baaaad stuff, so we must ban it. Never mind that the college kids have been mixing red bull with booze for years.

It's worth nothing, and ultimately I want Qadaffi to die a horribly suffering death, but not now....
Go Qadaffi!! If there are no American, Canadian or British troops under fire then I want Qadaffi to mop the floor with France, the United Nations and the Islamic rebels. Let there be rivers of Muslim blood running through the sand. I can always live with that.
While they're using Kleenex to clean up after their circle jerk with their dream of a neutered United States, I hope France and the United Nations somehow suffer uncountable casualties. They dreamt of a post-superpower world, by all means, let them have it. And if this drags on long enough, taking up scant valuable European resources and hastening the death of EU, then all the better.
And if by chance, some UN mission happens to get the Lockerbie bomber who's probably still recuperating, I can live with that too.

From The Hill
Anti-war filmmaker Michael Moore tore into President Obama for taking military action in Libya on Saturday.
Moore, a frequent critic of President Bush for launching the Iraq War, unleashed a string on tweets comparing the U.S. military's mission in Libya to Iraq and Afghanistan, using a mantra coined by Charlie Sheen:
And we always follow the French's lead! Next thing you know, we'll have free health care & free college! Yay war!
We've had a "no-fly zone" over Afghanistan for over 9 yrs. How's that going? #WINNING !
Khadaffy must've planned 9/11! #excuses
Khadaffy must've had WMD! #excusesthatwork

I apologize for yelling folks, but let's just go home. Right now. If we're serious about going to war with Libya, then we go in immediately with everything we have and attack relentlessly and remorselessly - cruise missiles, planes (hundreds of them) which drop their bombs, fly back to Italy, Malta or the carriers they came from, re-arm, and then fly the next sortie, and then the sortie after that, and the sortie after that, and so on 24 X 7. At least both Bush Presidents got THAT part of warfare right!!!!
If we're going to have some sort of fucking "graduated response" the way we did in Vietnam, where drop a bomb and see what the enemy thinks about THAT, then let's just pack everything up and go home. We're wasting our time and unnecessarily endangering the lives of our pilots.
I have to laugh. In the Gulf Wars (and Afghanistan) the MSM was so busy fellating Colin Powell, they came up with what they called the 'Powell Doctrine'. Remember that? When you attack another country, you go in from the start with absolutely overwhelming force - and never cease.
Wow! How radical! As though a fucking caveman couldn't figure out (and actually implemented) such a strategy! But no. According to the MSM this was an entirely new, and unheard of concept for successfully waging war.
But now, with Obama purportedly in charge, let's hold back and revert to what liberals always do when they go to war. Show how compassionate they are. How concerned they are about (gulp!) killing people.
Absolutely guaranteed? Next step, we're going to cease bombing Libya in order to force Gadhafi to the negotiating table. Which leads to the question - Why the fuck should there even be a negotiating table??
BTW: If I sound thoroughly disgusted at this turn of events....it's because I am.

Or as it was put to me, the "BS winning the hearts and minds speech," because they are Marines and they want to fight and that other stuff is for the Army. I will say no more about it.

Butt nipples.
Waddya' think? Would they be of interest? Or have the plastic surgeons and "body artists" in LA already gotten there?
The other brainy idea I had was for a live action movie based on Looney Tunes. Danny Devito could play Yosemite Sam. Carol Kane could play Witch Hazel (obviously requiring a fat suit). David Hyde Pierce could play one of the Goofy Gophers.

Yes, but not in the same way. A number of other presidents have attacked the rich and some would argue certain populations, but Clinton was one of the first to start attacking we conservatives in this way. Still, there has always been animus between political parties and they have long accused each other of some wretched and horrible things.
As for politicians speaking-out, I see and hear more because I've "subscribed" to the Facebook feeds of some movers-&-shakers and I've seen some of the pressers they hold on CSPAN. The two parties hold press conferences in which they attack each other all the time, but they never make the nightly news. I have come to realize that the MBM can say that, if they don't cover it, it didn't happen. Still wish some of them were more forthright in public about defending us, but some do it more than people know.

I hate to say this- but I don't support the troops. How can I when there has not been articulated a clear mission? Of course I don't want to see casualties and won't slander our soldiers. But this has gone too far. We have had for some time, a completely out of control foreign policy and a State Department that seems in many ways to be acting in spite of our interests and in some cases clearly against them. Get ready to accomodate yourselves to the hordes of North African "freedom fighters" that we'll be expected to welcome with open arms- we'll be feeding them soon and training them to take over our jobs.

true story, she took a .44 round, took the gunpowder out (she reloads), and has my name engraved on the case and wears it on a chain, put it on when we were married

If you have trouble with the design software, shoot me a note though the link in my name. I'd be happy to work up a finished design for you that can be submitted to cafe press.

That said, there's a part of me that thinks we're getting to the point where large amount of our fine men and women in uniform need to start questioning orders from or supposed CinC (on vacation), particularly the folks in the top ranks
Agree about the CiC being AWOL. How long do you think these fine men and women would last when they defie orders?

Seriously. There is a point where I as a citizen am responsible for speaking up. I can't support this. They're not even trying to pretend that this action is in our interest. This is insane.

To Ronster: I will answer your hello.
To sartana: I will answer to you also.
To: everyone else
I'm not sure how this will work.
I read all the comments up to 719. I also join in the drinking and watching the moon. Somehow that and the tree out back fit in nicely.
This blog has it's own sense of humor. Sometimes it's juvinille(?), sometimes its dark & skary. Socks (I think that is wat ya'll call it) make it difficutl to figure out sometimes.
The troops are our son's and daughters. Our neighbors sons & daughers. They are not robots, but real life people. They have they're doubts and concerns. they also leave they're sons and daughters behind.
They have faith that the polliiticians, as a whole, will not sacrafice their lives for politicial gain. Some times this is not he case.
We take our selves seriously ( with abit of humor), but all know what it CAN mean.
They are the ones that give ya'll (me too) the freedom to say what we will. and with the internet, etc. to have it sent all over the world.
No.Ya'll desire not to respect he pre sent. Do so in your own way.
Do not disrespect or tar the US military with that brush.
I thank them for the freedom to make this post.

Hey Sartana, get fucked.
The Troops are kicking ass and taking names, with one hand tied behind their backs. And I support them wholeheartedly, because they are killing wannabe-jihadis on a daily basis.
I don't know who the fuck you are or where you came from, but I support The Troops 100%, in spite of the shit 'leadership' that currently controls foreign policy, whatever that means as of 11:30pm Pacific, March 19th 2011.
They are fighting for civilization, believe it or not, with the political odds stacked against them. What they are doing might make it easier for my kids, but that's out of The Troops' hands because of milquetoast fag ass liberals who are actively trying to take our nation down.
String that fat fuck mikey moore up and skin him, along with a whole bunch of anti-American bastards who make their $$ off the security that The Troops give them, day in and out.
God Bless the Troops, and God Bless America.

May we please know the names and addresses of all of the Arab countries that
are contributing to this oust K-Daffy operation? NO! We will only give you those names later, after we see if this whole thing turns into a nice big hate America party after all. We know that's how it will go, so aim well you missile men. Make it so nice and flat over there that we will never have to put a boot ashore...except to look for oil. We are going to get some of the oil, for free, for doing this...right?
