— Ace Hope springs eternal.
ARG, after polling 600 likely Republican caucus-goers over the weekend, reports that Gingrich has fallen to 22 percent support in Iowa, while Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are tied with 17 percent, and Perry has 13 percent support among respondents.

He actually wants the schools to teach prayer? I find this hard to believe. If so, it utterly disqualifies him to be President.
But I doubt he actually said that. Proof please.

So, basically, what you wrote was bullshit.
Look, I don't like Rick Perry, but you can't just accuse him on BS grounds without proof?
Allowing students to pray whenever and wherever =/= teaching children to pray.
If, as you say, they can pray whenever they want now, then a Constitutional amendment allowing them to pray should do no additional harm.

But, geez, the words coming out of his own mouth - about the gays, the prayer stuff ...
^^ This.
The constant verbal gaffes and the debate perfromances don't make his case either. You can say that anyone can stumble like that. That's true, anyone can.
But "anyone" doesn't do it repeatedly, when they know what's coming, and when they've had weeks to prepare.
All it says is, "Hi, I'm Rick Perry and I can't think on my feet."

“I happen to believe that should be a local decision. That’s not the Supreme Court’s decision to be telling Americans when and how they should pray.”
In an effort to appeal to Christian voters – especially in Iowa – Perry said if elected president he would travel the country making the case for a constitutional amendment to allow school prayer.
Posted by: willow at December 12, 2011 03:39 PM (h+qn8)
From my link:
In the 1962 landmark case Engel v. Vitale, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the New York school district violated studentsÂ’ First Amendment rights by requiring that they pray in the classroom prior to the start of each school day.
However, Perry takes exception to the high courtÂ’s ruling.
“I happen to believe that should be a local decision. That’s not the Supreme Court’s decision to be telling Americans when and how they should pray.”
So he wants it to be a local issue and therefore we need a Constitutional amendment. That makes my head hurt, but even if I was really against the idea, it's not like he can sign a decree his first day in office to do it.

Students shouldn't be required to pray, not even as a "local decision". The ONLY person who should be making that decision is the student themself!

Perry's numbers nationally, within the party and amongst the general electorate, are absolutely fucking atrocious. Sub-30% approval in swing states. That collapse though has more to do with his campaign than the man himself, whose numbers were fantastic heading into his candidate announcement.

Although the 1962 ruling did ban organized prayer in public schools, several states do allow students to pray during school hours.
Carol Greta, general counsel for the Iowa Department of Education, said children in public schools are allowed to pray. However, she said the primary issue is that school employees may not coerce or force students to pray in school.
In Texas, school systems are mandated to provide a minute of silence each morning for children to pray on their own if they so desire.
hmm the only problem i would see is if school had to be stopped to allow prayer.

This is a canard: a conservative candidate, or one who wants to sound conservative, immediately goes full retard and demands a Constitutional amendment.
It's a twofer: It convinces people who are amenable to the amendment that you're completely. fucking. serious., and also allows the vast middle to completely ignore the proclaimation, on account of, it's virtually impossible to pass even a very popular Constitutional amendment.
Of course, when the targetted constituency comes knocking about getting that amendment process fired up, the president can (correctly) say that the president can only suggest, not legislate, an amendment of this nature.

Yeah, well, no matter what happens I'll either be staying home and not voting or voting directly for Obama. The key thing is making sure the field is clear for Sarah Palin to run in 2016. Without the Sarah there's no point in having a presidency. Besides, if Obama wins then we can impeach him. This is important, since those RINO pukes don't have the guts to impeach a RINO president, like Bushleague. So the whole strategy is to get the Democrat reelected so we can impeach him. Like the Newt did with Clinton. I liked that. It was red meat and I'm hungry. When Obama gets impeached we'll have won, or at least sent our message or whatever. I'm looking forward to that. Same holds true for the rapture.

Ok so then provide the link that Perry says he wants teachers leading prayer in school.
He wants a 1962 Supreme Court decision which required children to pray overturned. He wants a return to organized prayer.Same difference.
Posted by: Random at December 12, 2011 07:53 PM (YiE0S)
Again nice link to CNN you have there dumbass. That ruling has been used as the precedent for more than just stopping required school prayer.

Does not compute.
It does if you start from the assumption that Perry has fallen too far behind to be a contender. In that scenario it's a choice between Newt and Romney.
Neither are particularly conservative and they otherwise suck in their own special way, but Romney has the edge in that he's electable. Newt... not so much.

Unmentioned is the likelihood that he's had to take some pain pills, muscle relaxants. Which might explain his occasional "goofiness."
Of course, if your defense is -- I don't suck, it just seemed like I suck because of my crippling physical infirmities and the powerfully narcotic pain meds I take .... that raised other issues.

Crap. Now I have to go read and find out what Perry is actually planning to do.
Can't see teachers leading prayer. It would be funny to watch libs head explode at the proposal but otherwise meh.

When I was a kid I was a traveling military brat and in one of the schools in the south I attended there was a daily salute to the flag, then the lords prayer, in a public school. And you called the teachers "Yes Sir or Maam" , were respectful to them and your fellow students, and obeyed the rules, or got a "swat" or two.
Didn't hurt me at all.

Besides having the Bully-pulpit and being able to go around the country and drum up support for it. Which is what he said he'd do, right along with a balanced budget amendment.
Yeh, still a million times better than Obama going around bully-pulpit-ing about health care "reform". Plus, he might just be too busy cleaning up messes in D.C. to get around to it.

Why is it people never quote everything you say?
As I finished, Romney is not liked period. Have read a few articles from our side pointing out this fact. How many elections does this guy have to lose for the "electability myth" to finally sink in? Its as if the default position is:
Newt = not electable
Mitt = solid winner
The base can't stand this guy, is it politcal pros position that no matter who wins the primary the base will automatically become enthusiastic? FTR, if Mittens wins the primary, I will phonebank and go door to door. I don't care who it is, except Paul. But I know many that won't be enthused.

It used to be tradition to marry your cousin. Doesn't mean it's right just because that's how its always been done.
Posted by: not from around here at December 12, 2011 08:14 PM (3akB4)
Bad example, given that there doesn't seem to be any real downside to marrying one's cousin, pop culture opinion to the contrary.
As for the substance of you comment, shouldn't those who wish to change a traditional custom have the burden of proving that doing so will improve matters, particularly one as integral to a society as marriage?

Ace,
As a default-Romney supporter I was initially hard on Perry's poor debate performances. And while of the entire field my fantasy pick is Santorum, I still default to Romney as the best practical choice.
But let me just say that if I could a push a button that would magically make Rick Perry the nominee in exchange for ending the nightmare scenario of running Gingrich in a general election: my fucking finger would broke from repeatedly stabbing that button.

Oh, and in completely unrelated news, many other social radicals who have been working to destroy the family unit and everything good are also big pushers of gay marriage. Just like Obama.
So I get giggles when "conservatives" hold the same position on gay marriage as Obama and fellow radicals. Tee-hee.

I know, right? How liberal can you be, wanting local communities to have the final say, rather than everything being micro-managed by the feds. Oh the horror!
And for those who are just oh so horrified at the thought of public schools have official prayers, because this would supposedly violate the Constitution, know that each session of Congress begins with a prayer offered by a preacher that is PAID to do so. Since the 1700s.
oh noz
