Islamists Plot To Take Over Post-Gaddafy Libya
— Ace

Hooray...?

Jihadists among the Libyan rebels revealed plans last week on the Internet to subvert the post-Moammar Gadhafi government and create an Islamist state, according to U.S. intelligence agencies.

U.S. officials said spy agencies are stepping up surveillance of Islamist-oriented elements among Libyan rebels. A government report circulated Tuesday said extremists were observed “strategizing” on Internet forums about how to set up an Islamist state in Libya after the regime of Col. Gadhafi is defeated.

“Several forum participants have suggested that, following a transitional stage, the battle should turn against secularist rebels and members of the [rebels’] Transitional National Council,” the unclassified report stated.

Unfortunately, I don't think Obama has the will to do what is necessary here, if he is to actually finish this in an acceptable way. He'd need to seriously arm the non-jihadists, and even bomb, when needed, jihadist positions.

Civil wars are always dirty wars, and I don't know if President Theoretical Understanding Only has the grit for that.

And, of course, as many argued, replacing an unpopular former terrorist with popular current terrorists is no victory at all.

2 I don't know if President Theoretical Understanding Only has the grit for that.

He doesn't even have a theoretical understanding.  A theory usually has a coherent set of facts, however incomplete, to support it.  He's too lazy for that.

5 So, umm, remember that little discussion about whether Obama had it figured out, "winning" in Libya by doing it on the cheap and on the sly? Yeah, by not being a part of the thing, really, we don't get to have any say about what goes on after. I know that the US public wouldn't stand for a ground invasion, and we really shouldn't do it anyway, but this isn't going to play well for Obama. Kinda sorta just like Egyot.

All gatherings will be kept way back out of camera and outside the facility.

I was hoping to get a SCoaMF banner on TV for the cause or maybe do some tailgating in the parking lot, but it will have to wait.

20 I really want him to do the right thing, like you outline in the post, but then I realize some in the GOP will try to score political points against him for that course of action, so I know he won't. The best thing we can hope for is stability through November 2012, then whoever wins the presidency commits to stamping out the jihadist presence there.

If I were charitable, I would say that DoS (Hillary) and the Zero miscalculated and thought that Arabs/Muslims were more or less like normal civilized people and would welcome a chance to overthrow a dictator or two and establish a decent government.  Being practical and cynical, however, I conclude that our elite betters want conflagration in that part of the world for reasons that completely escape me.  Mubarak and Kdaffy are scum, but we don't need more regional instability which is the only sure thing to come from this.  At least now, we won't be getting any cheap oil from Libya so our imported energy dependence is being fixed.

There's a good chance of it happening, of course, but don't think for a second that the Islamists have a lock on it. Libya is a tribal country that hasn't had much contact with the Mid Eastern countries. It's just not part of the Mid East at all if their location wasn't much of a clue.

What else would you suggest? I'm sure he'd fully support repeal as soon as it passed the House and the Senate. The EO is just a 'what to do in the mean time' type of thing.

Posted by: Oily Taints at September 05, 2011 05:14 PM (TUax9)

What he should say is that he would expect the House and Republican leader in the Senate to work on a repeal bill, so that it could be sitting on his desk the day he takes office.   And, if not that day the next damn day.   Wasn't the repeal bill in the House all of 2 or 3 pages?   How long would that freakin' take?

That's the shit I want to hear.

99 Richard Miniter argued on a Ricochet podcast that the Euroweenies weren't upset with Gaddaffi over oil contracts... Crazy Moammar was delivering the juice just fine. Once the uprising against Gaddaffi began , that spurred European gubmints to help kick him out and see Libya returned to a semblance of normalcy for one primary reason: refugees. The Europeans can't afford any more North African influx to further burden their welfare state.

How about this for happy fun times?

18.12 Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - the terror group's north African branch - has acquired a stockpile of weapons during the turmoil in Libya, including surface-to-air missiles that are threatening air travel, the EU's counter-terrorism coordinator Gilles de Kerchove says.

Speaking at a Brussels news conference, de Kerchove said members of AQIP had "gained access to weapons, either small arms or machine-guns, or certain surface-to-air missiles which are extremely dangerous because they pose a risk to flights over the territory".

The Rockford, IL Tea Party has called out Hoffa for his rhetoric, and thrown it back in deWon's face, too.

112 Regardig Palin's comments on the Libyan situation:

Yes,  a lot of regular folks (not in the State Department or government) were suspicious.

However,  a lot of candidates were silent.  And the media was all rah-rah for the rebels.

Same deal with Egypt.  I got into an argument with Stephen Hayes about it.  He assured me that "reputable media sources" had told him that the protesters in Cairo were pro-democracy.  THAT was his source.  Anderson Cooper,  I guess.  Bah!

Why is Obama doing this?  I think he is nuts,  and wants to establish the Caliphate,  which he thinks he will get to run.  It's the only thing that makes his decisions consistent.

Put the screws to Israel.
Kick Mubarik out so Muslim Brotherhood can take over.
Don't do anything regarding Syria, so that pro-Iranian regime stays in charge.
Ignore Turkey's increasing jihadist tendencies.
Overthrow regime in Lybia so AQ/Muslim Brotherhood can take over.
Foment trouble in Yemen so that regime who has actually helped us is in danger.
Abandon Iraq,  which will put them in the crosshairs of Tehran.
Make it plain we are leaving Afghanistan,  so Iran has a nice target to their east.

All of these will eventually end up with Israel completely surrounded,  and a pro-Iranian, pro-terrorist regime in all countries listed except Israel.

If you want to know what he will do about a country,  look to see if the current regime is opposed by the Muslim Brotherhood.  If it is,  he will offer it know support.

I think an Islamist takeover in Libya was or is a foregone conclusion. Even if it does not happen in the next month or so, an Islamist takeover within a year or so is likely. But I don't think it's as bad or can be as bad as Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Libya is essentially a strip along the coast, stretching maybe 20 miles inland, where 90% of the roughly 6.5 million people live. The rest is desert with very little water. This means that if there's anyone we really need to administer a beating to, getting to them is more an act of political strength, and water supply control, than anything else.

It seems that an Islamist takeover will end up looking a continuous running of Three Stooges serials. There is a heavy tribal influence among the Libyan Arabs, and getting unity will be tough. They'll have Islam, but which tribe's brand? I expect to see advanced corruption, depravity and pettiness develop in Libya. Outsiders will eventually be tossed out, unless Egypt and/or Algeria roll in to settle problems there.

Algeria remembers their islamic insurrection of some years ago; some things will not be allowed to happen again. Egypt now sees that there really is something to fear from the MB; it's one thing to take a 1-week tour of Shari'a, in Saudi Araba ... quite another to have Shari'a take a tour of you. Egyptians look down on Bedouins ... being forced to become like the Bedouins ... there's some real serious knots in many intestines in Egypt right now ...

Perhaps there is a very small chance that China will move in ... with no reliable infrastructure or work force there, China needs oil and has a few million extra Chinese males ... I feel a very nervous laugh coming on.

Bottom line: I think that the Europeans will be able to play the tribal factions in Libya off against each other for several years, and that the MB will be shown to be incapable of governing Egypt. Egypt and Libya will regress 50+ years, and there will be ongoing turmoil until another Nasser appears. There will be danger, but I think less than there is now or has been since WW2. It's the follow-on to the MB, democracy or Naser II, and when, and with what resources, that worries me.

"Do you feel that way about Sarah Palin as well?" Mr Benioff mischievously planted.

"Let's say I focus on education as an important criteria," a smiling Mr Schmidt answered, much to the delight of the crowd.

Bill Gates never finished Harvard

Also, the smiling Mr. Schmidt apparently does not know that the singular form of the word "criteria" is criterion.
