Issa to Holder: “You Own Fast and Furious”
— andy

Eric Holder: The GOP is being so mean about Operation Fast and Furious. Can't we just drop this thing and all get along. Look ... squirrel!

Darrell Issa: Please, continue, you were saying something about best intentions. What's the matter? Oh, you were finished! Well, allow me to retort.

Dear Attorney General Holder:

From the beginning of the congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious, the Department of Justice has offered a roving set of ever-changing explanations to justify its involvement in this reckless and deadly program. These defenses have been aimed at undermining the investigation. From the start, the Department insisted that no wrongdoing had occurred and asked Senator Grassley and me to defer our oversight responsibilities over its concerns about our purported interference with its ongoing criminal investigations. Additionally, the Department steadfastly insisted that gunwalking did not occur.

Once documentary and testimonial evidence strongly contradicted these claims, the Department attempted to limit the fallout from Fast and Furious to the Phoenix Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). When that effort also proved unsuccessful, the Department next argued that Fast and Furious resided only within ATF itself, before eventually also assigning blame to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona. All of these efforts were designed to circle the wagons around DOJ and its political appointees.

To that end, just last month, you claimed that Fast and Furious did not reach the upper levels of the Justice Department. Documents discovered through the course of the investigation, however, have proved each and every one of these claims advanced by the Department to be untrue. It appears your latest defense has reached a new low. Incredibly, in your letter from Friday you now claim that you were unaware of Fast and Furious because your staff failed to inform you of information contained in memos that were specifically addressed to you. At best, this indicates negligence and incompetence in your duties as Attorney General. At worst, it places your credibility into serious doubt. (emphasis added)

Read the whole, beautiful thing. It's a long-form version of "you lie!"

Politics trumps everything for these people, whether it's dead USBP agents, 10% unemployment, trillions of dollars disappeared from the Treasury, or gross malfeasance of office by their hand-picked President.

Posted by: Vic at October 10, 2011 02:09 PM You're absolutely right. There is no other competent explanation for what was allowed to happen. If they actually cared abuot preventing guns from going to Mexico, the very LEAST they would have done is engage the Mexican gov't so they could be intercepted on the Mexican side of the border. They made virtually no attempt to even track where the guns went, eliminating any possible means through which this operation could have ever resulted in any kind of prosecution or other positive conclusion. No, its pretty obvious that the Obama / Holder DOJ was attempting to make their "90% of cartel guns come from the US" claim come true. And frankly, as pissed as we all should be, the Mexicans are right to be ten times as pissed. Its bad enough that our demand for their drugs and our prohibitory stance on the same are the source for this problem, now we're arming the cartels, too ?!!?!? Spectacular Failure.

I personally believe that he still has a job because he knows that SCOAMF was in on this from the beginning.  They wanted and still want gun control.   He told Mrs. Brady that in public.  What other "behind the scenes" shit was he referring to?

So I'm a conspiracy nut.  I can live with that.

99 I've always thought the idea was to track where the guns were going. So we sold Mexican drug lords guns, and would you believe it, those guns went right on down to Mexico. Posted by: mugiwara at October 10, 2011 02:27 PM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Only problem with that theory is the only way the have to track them is when they're impounded at a crime scene. Waiting for guns to be used and left behind is not a law enforcement tactic for anything. The Mexican gov't already has what they need to prosecute the crime in Mexico, and the US has nothing to use for prosecuting anyone either here or there. I'm that will be their BS claim, but that's a lie.

The press didn't abandon it's responsibility; we, the people (collectively) abandoned ours.

I called my broker on Friday about an issue that I noticed when I finally stopped eyeing my quarterly statement like it was going to bite me and looked at it.  First thing he said, before I could even finish saying "So I finally read my quarterly" was "Don't freak out, don't panic sell, this won't go on forever".  I'll admit, I started laughing.  Not so amusingly I may have accidentally created a huge, huge mess in the office.  Not my doing but there is some Obamalevel competence going on that I stumbled across.  Um yay me?

230 We (the right) never bought a tv network solely as the right.  The socon's have some but the rest of us not really.

True, but not really the point.  The point of my comment was the people believed the medias claims of "balance" and "unbiased reporting," while the reporting was nothing of the sort.  They never subjected the TV networks (or even the radio networks before TV) to the kind of scrutiny they should have.

So the liberals were able to propagate political propaganda (I couldn't resist the alliteration) without any significant criticism or balance for the better part of 50 years.

So is this letter from Issa the point at which Holder says, "Game over, man!  Game over!"?

Yeah, I wasn't going for laughs.

Anybody here know two hundred people?  Have 200 facebook friends?  Two hundred family members?  'Cause that's how many people are now six feet under, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Justice.  If another country had done to us what we've done to Mexico, they would be dealing with a freaking MEU and a couple of hundred cruise missiles right now.

Unfortunately, it got lost in all the other noise- I hadn't noticed.  Now that you point it out, however, I must admit you're right.  I wonder if we could track the coverage of the worst of the Cartel violence to the time just before F&F through, oh, say August this year.  I bet they'd line up pretty well.

307 Here is Kos troll for you:

Fast and Furious - no big deal - perjury charges against the Attorney General of the United States - that and  maybe 200 counts of depraved indifference felony murder - tops. Oh yeah and maybe a capital case against him for the death of a Federal agent. Like I said - no big deal.

Its not like Watergate when the Rethuglicans broke into Democratic party head quarters and planted surveillance gear after all. That was such a big deal - it brought down a president.

Of course there are a lot more people dead and a thousand or so guns still floating around on the streets from this one. So we might have some minor PR problems here.

Rethuglicans - you kill a couple of hundred men women and children - in Mexico for crying out loud - and they go all Waa Waa likes its as big a scandal as Watergate was. They need to get a sense of proportion.

309 I seem to recall the ATF involved in another disaster a few years ago. IIRC another Democratic President was in charge. The Attorney General was "in charge", at Waco, too. I'm thinking the ATF might need to be restructured, you know. A branch for booze. A branch for smokes. A branch for dynamite and commercial high explosives. And another branch in charge of protecting passenger pigeons from poachers...
