It's Not Entertainment. It's HBO.
— Ace

"In case you couldn't tell from Woody Harrelson saying it five thousand million times at the beginning, this is the trailer for HBO's Game Change which stars Ed Harris John McCain [and] Julianne Moore as Tina Fey as Sarah Palin[.]" -- dlisted

HBO, you know, makes "important" movies.

Don't blame me. I hate HBO productions and don't ever subscribe to them precisely because they clutter their channels with infinite replayings of their in-house pretendertaintment dreck.

Yes, I know, Deadwood was good. (For two seasons.) That don't justify.

But that's not all there is to be excited about when it comes to HBO's 2008 election movie "Game Change." There's Ed Harris looking more like John McCain than you'd dream possible (we're guessing he put on some weight for the role). There's Woody Harrelson playing behind-the-scenes-puppeteer. And there's a clip of "Sa-RAH! Sa-RAH!" chanting that feels like the pre-murder moment in a horror movie.

At an event last week, the 51-year-ancient actress told the New York Daily News she “read every single thing” she could about the former Alaska governor and “watched every interview” in order to prepare for her role as Palin in next year’s HBO mini-series, “Game Change.”

When questioned if she had developed a newfound respect for Palin after all her research, the actress raised an eyebrow and sighed deeply. “No,” she told the paper peacefully.

129 92 I've hated HBO ever since they broadcast And The Band Played On (a virtual who's-who of late 80s lib actors) in which they blame the AIDS epidemic on Reagan because he didn't speak about it soon enough.

The book that the movie was based off of, (And The Band Played On, by Randy Shilts) is actually a very good work of investigative journalism.  Randy Shilts was homosexual himself, but he had no qualms about calling out "his own" about their role in the AIDS epidemic, notably the homosexual rights groups and SF bathhouse operators.  STDs of all kinds were passed between partners in the deplorable conditions of the bathhouses (which were not addressed by the bathhouse owners) and the homosexual rights groups were actively opposing any steps that would have saved homosexual lives, equating such efforts to Nazism.

However, one just watching the movie only heard of the sins of the Blood Bank Operators and the Reagan Administration, not about the considerable roles these rights organizations and the bathhouse operators had in the spread of the HIV virus.  Furthermore, Dr. Robert Gallo, one of the researchers involved with the initial findings of the HIV, was portrayed by Alan Ada as an irredeemably evil, egotistical scientist (the egotistical part was probably a bit deserved though).

That was also when a big selling point for cable tv was the fact that were hardly any commercials, maybe a spot or two for some local store and that was it, because you were paying for it already, now there's more commercials on cable than the the free nets, everything sucks now.

It talked about all the stds and how her son was sick all the time and she was worried that the lifestyle of having multiple anonymous sex partners everyday was, you know, unhealthy. A lot of the Reagan criticism in the film is indirect, mostly targeting the Reagan's Administration's supposed indifference to a malady that was "only" targeting homosexuals.  In one scene, a gay activist (I think - I don't remember the exact name) bemoaned that "If this disease was targeting nuns and Christians..it would be getting more attention" (paraphrased, but it gives the general gist of the comment).  Later on in the movie, the character played by Sir Ian McKellen (Bill Kraus), found a memo detailing supposedly how the Reagan Administration was claiming that it was spending AIDS research money when in fact that money was going for AIDS-unrelated research.

One thing that is very downplayed in the movie is how homosexuals conducted themselves in the bathhouses.  When I say that they were very "decadent", I'm using the term properly here.  I shant go any further, but let's say that men's limbs go up to the elbows in certain orifices IYKWIMAITYD.  These kind of practices in where there is a lot of tissue tearing along with the flagrant promiscuity of such people going into the bathhouses, contributed a lot to spread of AIDS in the homosexual population.  Remember the French (or was it Canadian?) airline pilot mentioned in the movie?

Gaetan Dugas.  He was a "fast-lane" homosexual.  Some of these people racked up to 20k sexual partners!

The story about Dugas gets worse.  Once he was diagnosed with AIDS, Dugas would seek out multiple partners and then show him his KaposiÂ’s sarcoma lesions.  "IÂ’ve got gay cancer," Dugas would then say. "IÂ’m going to die, and so are you."

234 Why would anyone need to relive the 2008 election?

Oh yeah, the historic moment where we could finally be proud of America for the first time?

No, not even that.  Just a stupid need to bash the GOP.  For No Apparent Reason.  They aren't even running for anything.

It's as if Fox News put together a John Kerry and John Edwards movie, with Steve Crowder and Jim Treacher acting their roles (I know, that's stupid, shut up).  Why in the hell would they do that?

HBO could have picked any topic.  They could have picked a movie about Alexander the Great or talking fish or aliens.  Instead, it's a predictable tear down of that candidates from a few years ago who didn't win.

If you are an HBO customer today, you are a sucker.

And yes, this is all about electing more democrats.  They need all the propaganda they can get at this point.

236 I tried to like Deadwood. I really did. I can even claim an underlying motive in that it was shot at the Melody Ranch near where I live and meant money coming into the region. But it's hard to get into a show where every exposure leaves you thinking, "I hate all of these people and don't mind if they die."

238 One thing that is very downplayed in the movie is how homosexuals conducted themselves in the bathhouses

The one guy whom Shiltz really takes to task in the book is the head public health official in San Francisco who refuses to shut down the bathhouses (due to pressure from homosexual activists). I thought the book was good; I get the impression that the movie version was just a pale, sanitized version of the book.

239 "Band of Brothers was easily the best thing they ever did."

True. The DVD set is within arm's reach on my desk.

However, Rome was excellent. And an Iraq veteran of my acquaintance recommended Generation Kill - though I haven't seen it yet.

The rest of their programming, though, is a good illustration of Sturgeon's Law: "Ninety percent of anything is crap."

240 We cancelled HBO two years ago. I do miss some boxing matches, other than that, no loss.

While reading comments down to #153, or so, it occurred to me to recommend a Showtime movie just ending:

A Game of Honor.

Military Academy excellence, character of these young warriors-to-be, plus Army/Navy game of 2011. Tugs at the heart, it does. Beats my other favorite football film: Harvard Beats Yale, 29 to 29 (not a typo).

241 There's a LOT more good on HBO than 2 seasons of Deadwood.

Sopranos
Entourage
Boardwalk Empire
Rome
Six Feet Under
Band of Brothers

Dream On (back in the day)

As far as this idiotic movie goes, I dont' know what HBO hopes to gain here.  Nobody is going to subscribe to their channel to see this idiocy, and the audience for it to begin with is probably no more than 10% of the population.  What do they have to gain other than self satisfying smugness ?
