It's Official: Navy Relieves CO Of USS Enterprise Over Videos
— DrewM

Obama calls the Eagles to congratulate them on giving dog killer Michael Vick a second chance but now his Navy commanders are going to trash the career of a decorated hero over some videos?

Hurt feelings and political correctness trump decades of honorable service and readiness for war. What could go wrong?

Adm. John C. Harvey announced Tuesday that he has permanently relieved Capt. Owen Honors as commanding officer of the aircraft carrier Enterprise for showing "exceptionally poor judgment" in producing and broadcasting a series of raunchy videos to his crew in 2006 and 2007.

Harvey, the four-star head of the Navy's Fleet Forces Command, said that Capt. Dee Mewbourne, former commander of the carrier Eisenhower, will take command of the ship today as Honors' permanent replacement. Mewbourne had been at Navy Cyber Forces Command.

This is kind of interesting because Enterprise COs generally have to go through extra nuclear propulsion training because of the unique reactors the 50 year old ship has. Has Mewbourne gone through that training or after all these years is tossed overboard because of some off color videos? (Yes, I know, the Chief Engineer really runs the reactor but this extra training was the norm, until today).

I will say this, Captain Honors was playing with fire and he seemed to know it. His disclaimers about his superiors not being held accountable for the content of the videos demonstrates he knew that. When you do that, sometimes you get burned.

As for Honors' superiors. They clearly had to know what was in these videos at the time they were played on Enterprise. CDRSalamander wants to know what they did/thought.

There can only be three answers by the Navy concerning these videos. “We” refers to the Flag Officer Community that leads our Navy – just to be clear.

1. We had no idea.
2. We knew and didnÂ’t care.
3. We disapproved, counseled our Shipmate, corrective action taken with remediation, and we moved forward.

...For reasons best known to senior leadership, we now find ourselves looking at #1 or #2. As we know that #1 is an impossibility – that leads to #2.

Really? No – not in the Navy of 2010. I don’t buy #2 either. Well, wait – a 5% chance. I’ll give you 5%.

That brings us back to #3 – which is greatest problem of all if we are now going to take CAPT Honor from Command. If it were #1 we could all just facepalm and call stupid. If it were #2 or #3 then we don’t have stupid – we have malice and betrayal by an officer’s Chain of Command.

It is the height of moral corruption to tell someone what they are doing is OK one day, and then the next – to protect yourself - act as if it were horrible. It is just as morally corrupt to reprimand a person, provide corrective action, accept remediation – and then at a later date punish him again for the same act only harder; submit that person to double jeopardy for your own self-preservation.

Honors is being hung out to dry for something that was either fine with his then superiors or which he was duly critiqued for and allowed to move on in his career. Either way, this is ex post facto outrage and the senior leadership of the Navy has simply thrown a dedicated and decorated officer to the wolves.

Speaking of Honors' career...did you know he was essentially promoted twice after these videos were made? He remained at the same rank (Captain) but went from being Executive Officer of the Enterprise (the 2nd in command) to command his own ship, the USS Mount Whitney. In 2008 he led her into the middle of the Russia-Georgia war to provide relief supplies to the Georgians.

Oh and the Mount Whitney was recognized in 2008 and 2009 for outstanding retention. Honors was in command from January 2008-April 2009.

Again the Navy must have thought Honors performed at least at a satisfactory level because he was then returned to Enterprise as her CO and was thought fit to lead the ship into war.

All that gone because he ran his ship aground, got some of his sailors killed, made some off color jokes.

This kind of "offense" has to be weighed against the reality that we are a nation at war and Enterprise is shortly off to fight that war.

Any organization is going to want to protect its reputation. As I said to Slu in an email, there is more than one way to do that. Image if the Navy came out and said something like this.

"Yes, Captain Honors went a bit too far in trying to motivate and entertain his crew during a long and successful war patrol and we've spoken to him about that.

On the other hand, his nearly 30 years of otherwise impeccable service to this nation (list a bunch of great shit he's done), the support of so many of his superiors, peers and most impressively, men and women he has led, makes us think that on balance his talents and contributions vastly out weigh this one indiscretion.

Accordingly, Capt. Honors will continue to command USS Enterprise and the men and women he has trained with and prepared for their upcoming mission in support of our troops fighting in Afghanistan. We have every confidence that Capt. Honors has learned much from this situation and will be an even better officer and leader for it".

Imagine what officers, sailors and potential recruits would think about that Navy versus the one they are seeing on display today.

You can tell a lot about an organization by what it rewards and punishes. Feel free to draw your own conclusions about the current state of the US Navy.

13 Haven't seen all the videos, but what I've seen on the news seems no worse than what you would see on network TV during an episode of "Two and a Half Men", "Family Guy", MadTV, SNL, etc, and also no worse than cable comedies like, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", "The League", and even animated shows like "Archer". And the writers of "All In the Family" were able to use the word "fag" on national TV in the 1970s.

18 I'm of two minds about this.  On the one hand, it's hard to see someone who (otherwise) so honorably served his country sacrificed on the alter of political correctness.  On the other, we should expect a much, much higher standard from our military officers.  This wasn't some SSgt who was producing these for his platoon, this was a Captain and Executive Officer on the most widely recognized ship in the fleet, the USS Enterprise.

"An Officer, and a Gentleman."  Well, he was the first, but apparently not the second.

As for Naval Command- no sympathy for them, either.  They knew about these (they had to) and chose to overlook them.  That's not (or shouldn't be) acceptable, either.

Here is my personal take on the videos that I saw:

If I was a SWO, I'd be pretty pissed at Honors.  Not for being called a fag, but for his contemptuous attitude towards anyone who wasn't an aviator.

Posted by: ed at January 04, 2011 10:53 AM (QLhy5)

20

So does Honors have any recourse or is he done...done.

Posted by: dananjcon at January 04, 2011 10:53 AM (pr+up)

21 Wait.

He was Executive Officer. Not captain.

Who was the captain at the time these videos were made? Why isn't that person being held accountable?

Doesn't a carrier also have on board the commander of the entire carrier group? Wouldn't that person typically be an admiral? If so, who was the admiral on board when these were aired, and why isn't that person being held accountable?

Solid B+ to the Navy Admiralty for this tough decision.  I blame Bush, as CIC, for allowing this obviously inferior officer to remain on active duty.  Captain Honors should have been immediately replaced by Janeane Garofalo.  She's never said anything offensive to anyone who matters.

Not to worry, the younger generation "gets it."  This is some of the change they voted for.

Oh and....why on earth do Honors' contemporaries hang on?  Shouldn't they be looking for productive work in the civilian sector? Sure they made a career of it, but everyone changes careers these days, and change is good!

So does Honors have any recourse or is he done...done.

Well, that depends on how you look at it.  He won't be getting any promotions, or any commands.  However, he hasn't been officially discharged from the Navy.  So techincally, he could hang around for a few more years doing scut work.  Maybe he could get a job as a SWO? ;-)

HOWEVER, there was some female skipper of a ship who was recently relieved of command for abusing her crew.  Everyone thought that she would  be through in the Navy.  But just a couple of months ago, I heard she was getting a command or some sort of covet slot at the Pentagon.

Some people who know more that I said that the lesbian sisterhood in the Dept. of the Navy was covering for her.  Others said it was because of nepostism.  Or a combination thereof.

49 The only thing I would wonder, is that not long ago there was another story floating around about a lady who commanded a ship. She went out of her way to hurt anyone around her. She would routinely attack, verbally and I vaguely remember physically, and people quit because of her. A lady who only joined because of her parents went through hell because of this commander, yet she wasn't fired. She was reassigned to a research facility, I think. I can't find the story, but that's what I find odd. This guy loved to joke and his subordinates seemed to understand it and not have much of a problem with it, he was an excellent commander it would appear, yet he was relieved. However, a lady who went out of her way to yell, insult, and abuse her subordinates was reassigned? Something just ain't right.

73 From Cmdr Salamander's blog about the USN's initial reaction to the videos and complaint:

The Navy's initial reaction was sound;

The Navy released a written statement late Friday in response to The Pilot's inquiries.

"The videos created onboard USS Enterprise in 2006-2007 were not created with the intent to offend anyone," the statement said. "The videos were intended to be humorous skits focusing the crew's attention on specific issues such as port visits, traffic safety, water conservation, ship cleanliness, etc."

I think though - based upon the PAO's more recent statement - the usual suspects will take it from here - and in the finest traditions of throwing leaders under the bus instead of defending them - well - you know the path this takes.

76 Sure, gays and women get special protections in the military now. But what about civilians? I'd like to know why civilians can't join the military. It's discrimination to prevent civilians from integrating with the Army, and stuff. I mean, why do I have to give up my rights just to be in the Navy or CIA or Space Force or something? The UCMJ is unfair. I demand my full rights and that includes the right to drive an Abrams tank on the interstate. Just because I'm unenlisted doesn't mean I can't have the same privileges as a gunnery sergeant.

I think that this is another indicator that this country is experiencing, in a best case, a near death experience.  Like other mature societies in history that eventually made decisions that killed them, our country is doing the same thing. (e.g., no oil drilling, no nuclear power, gov't knows best, massive debt, over extended military, kill the farmers - save the delta smelt, equal means equal in every sense, etc., etc.)  It's just a good damn thing that he wasn't asked to kill people when needed.  They would have wanted him strung up.

My bet is that history will remember this period the fastest collapse of a principal society in history.  And as Barry has been so fond of saying, it has to be done fast or people will die.  He is right about one thing imo, a lot of people will die - once America is gone.

84 They can make DADT repeal work provided they do it correctly. That is making sure that everyone knows there will be no favoritism one way or another and that genuine harassment will not be tolerated.

Opening the salvo up with a "for cause" relief for actions that were performed in 2006 with knowledge by the then CO is not the right way to do it. Especially when there is no way in hell you can point at those videos and call them harassment of anyone.

It shows that senior leadership is going to do exactly what everyone was saying they would do if it was repealed, create yet another protected class that would would be judged differently from everyone else.

My though is this, aren't they having enough problems keeping senior people in during the reign of Obama?

And on that score one wonders if Obama ordered his cashiering? Shit after all, he has done every damn thing else he can do to destroy the military and the country.

That was Holly Graf who was a despicable ass.   She was the commanding officer of the Cowpens.  It took until Dec. '10 for them to decide to kick her ass out, but she leaves with a general, is allowed to retire as Capt. with full benefits.   That decision is still waiting review.

Google or bing her.   She treated her crew horribly for a long time before they did anything about it, but because she was the first woman to command a cruiser, and the destroyer, USS Winston Churchill, I guess she got some of that special treatment.

There is worse shit right now on Comedy Central and NBC. I mean they stabbed Jesus in the neck on South Park, and they have butt fucking every time I watch the show. NBC routinely airs SNL and other programs far worse than this, and hires actors who engage in perverse sexual ACTIVITY, not just talk about it or do skits on it. 125 Noting that some of my following has prob. already been said here but:

I am hearing some mumblings about the Brass promoting of Capt. Owen Honors despite of his ‘poor judgement’ in not only participating in these videos, but producing them himself. The mumblings also insinuate ‘higher-ups’ are in the cross-hairs over this. Whatever. That's 'chain of command' as laid out in our military, as it should be.

I’m not condoning this video crap. I personally believe the line Capt. Honors crossed was that where he entered into the jackass territory his lessers (NCOs and lower) dwell while trying to be a ‘buddy’ more than a commander to them. You see this mistake made by parents with their kids … friends instead of ‘parents’. (And yes, as stated, his 'pilot arrogance' got the better of him ... Them's pilots for ya.)

Look, itÂ’s a ship. Shit happens on Navy ships and subs. Shit happens on military bases and barracks. Dumb shit such as these videos. WORSE shit. Some people have their feelings hurt. Most donÂ’t. However, IÂ’d wager to say Capt. HonorsÂ’ “body count” is a hell of a lot lower than that of the PC socially promoted Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan who was a less than stellar soldier to be worthy of his rank promotions than Capt. Honors was, and his obvious

allegiance with our deadly enemy. His mind games with our wounded warriors at the military hospitals was far worse than this crap. Where is the discipline on the Brass above Hasan that promoted him?

That, and the timing on the ‘release’ of this particular information is suspicious … at best.

IÂ’m just sayinÂ’ Â…

I meant to discuss that but got interrupted and forgot. All they have to do is take and pass Nuke School. That is both classroom and prototype. The relieving officer is the ex-CO of another nuke carrier so he is already qualified.

139 After reading a bunch of threads about this incident, as well as the DADT threads before, I've come around to the view that we need to reinstate a mandatory draft for both men and women.

I was surprised at the number of military or ex-military who seemed blissfully unaware that what Honors did would have gotten him fired at most private companies.  That strikes me as incredibly naive.  Dangerously naive, actually, if those folks ever want to work in the private sector.  This is the new reality and has been for some time.  Similarly, I'm not comfortable with the "STFU if you haven't served aboard a naval vessel" (or in the military or the variants thereof) attitude.  Like it or not, Honors' paycheck comes from our tax dollars, so some input from civilians is going to happen.

Maybe if we all served for a couple of years in some capacity, we would lessen this divide between military and civilian life and also educate people who do not choose careers in the military about the special circumstances that might dictate different codes of conduct.

I have respect for our military as a group, but as individuals they aren't perfect.  Because of the all-volunteer military, there is a tendency to deify them as if everything they do is justifiable or even honorable.  Why the Navy chose to make an example of him isn't clear to me.  It certainly looks like retroactive punishment and scapegoating.  But what he did doesn't rise to the level of some of our men in uniform who engage the enemy and are then accused of genocide or some other atrocity afterward either.  Those are the folks who need defending.

Honors doesn't come off as a hero to me.  He comes off as a guy who decided to take a risk, despite knowing that what he was doing was objectionable to some people in his command, who got bitten for it.  I'm not sure I can name a job for a private employer in which people don't lose out on promotions for even more capricious reasons than these.

Sorry--wrong answer buzzer.

The military is not a private company--your premise is flawed.  Private companies do not ask their rank and file to put their lives on the line as a matter of routine.  Private companies are not subject to an entirely unique system of justice and accountability where the CEO can literally take your money and your freedom--or both.

Here's my problem with how this has transpired--Honors' predecessor must have approved.  MUST HAVE.  Emphasis deliberate.  Therefore, as XO he had the approval of his lawful chain of command.  Let's make that distinction--that same chain of command could not have approved of something unlawful like rape, drug use or sexual harassment.  There is zero illegal anything to go along with this circus, it is entirely manufactured and at some length after the fact.

Unrelated side note, but I was just reading back through some posts at Big Peace and saw this interesting note about the UN (originally from Foreign Policy):

“For two years, the U.N. has been the beneficiary of a policy of benign neglect on WashingtonÂ’s Capitol Hill, where a Democratic Congress has pretty much left it to the Obama administration to chart its own course at Turtle Bay. Those days are coming to a swift end. An emboldened Republican majority, led by the new chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, Ileanna Ros Lehtinen (R-FL), has already signaled an interest in reviewing U.S. financial support for U.N. programs, citing the need for belt tightening. A Cuban-American lawmaker from a heavily Jewish district, Ros Lehtinen can also be expected to use her position to shore up IsraelÂ’s conservative prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and to ratchet up pressure on Iran, and the Palestinian Authority. In February, 2009, she introduced legislation to cut U.S. funding for the United Nations and the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, which is responsible for providing relief to more than 4 million Palestinian refugees throughout the Middle East. LehtinenÂ’s intransigence could complicate the Obama administrationÂ’s efforts to ensure funding for new and enlarged U.N.-backed peacekeeping missions in Somalia and Ivory Coast.”

Please, oh please, please, please, please, let this actually come to some kind of fruition. The UN needs to stop sucking off the American teat.  It can go teatless for all I care.

No.  But I'm saying he was a person in a position of authority who violated regulations concerning code of conduct flagrantly for two years.  He knew that what he was doing was objectionable to people under him, he made a point of saying to those people in front of everyone (and on tape) that he was going to ignore their objections, and continued the behavior.

Anyone in the private sector who was given a heads up about their behavior crossing a line, even if that heads up was an informal heads up about a complaint from a subordinate, would address the issue seriously or lose their job.  Certainly not get promoted.

And in this case the behavior was totally unnecessary.  We're not talking about toughening up recruits in boot camp.  This was normal operations, not under fire, tons of time to consider (and reconsider) what he put out there.

No one seems to be questioning that he broke regs.  People seem to just be arguing that he should be allowed to break them because why exactly?

216 that is STILL against the UCMJ and therefore punishable.

So far.  The repeal doesn't go into effect until POTUS, SECDEF and CJCS sign off on it, meaning they will have updated the UCMJ by then.  No telling what they'll try to change.

219 As some have already pointed out, but it doesn't seem to be clicking with folks.

As the XO, he was told to stop making the videos by the Group Commander.
Now, I guess that the Group Commander might have forgotten to mention to the XO's boss (The CO at that time) that he had just told him to stop. But I'm kinda not thinking that's how it happened. More like the CO being told that the XO was told to stop.Later on, the CO had at least one opportunity to recommend, or not recommend the XO for his own command. And it would seem that the CO at that time, AFTER being told of the videos, still elected to recommend the XO for command. And that recommendation worked it's way up, and the powers to be said "Yes, this man shall have Command at Sea". Then, after his Deep Draft tour in 6th fleet, and with only 12 carriers in the fleet, when it came time to pick a new Commanding Officer for Enterprise, the powers to be again said ' He's our man".
As there is at least a 50% chance that the skipper of a carrier is being groomed for bigger shoes, (Flag Rank), the choice of who makes Carrier skipper has huge ramifications within the Flag Community, and is examined to the most minute detail. And you can't make me believe that the selection board was not aware of the videos being made, and chose him anyhow.
This whole thing has nothing to do with the videos themselves.
This is the opening salvo in the fallout from DADT.

Just retired from the Navy in August, with over 30 years of service, so this ain't my first rodeo. And this reeks of politics.

Funny thing about O's, especially high ranking O's.

There isn't much gradiation in the available punishment.  Either you get hammered, or you don't.  Lot of people says his punishment is too heavy.  Well realistically, what did anyone expect the punishment to be?  You don't give high ranking O's 7 days extra duty/7 days restriction.  Either they get off or they get relieved.  Yeah, technically, an O could get the 7/7.  Or corrective training.  Or a negative counseling statement.

But realistically?  Doesn't seem to happen.

Nope....probably never hit a whore house once during all those years in the 70's and early 80's either.

Y-not you are simply mistaken on all fronts of this. First, there appeared to be no regs broken by these videos at the time they were made. Second, I am sure he did not make them, write, them or direct them. From the articles it looks like that was done by their on-board video department. They were done as humorous training films. Crude humor but still humor. What he did was be in charge of the project.

As for being fired for doing the same thing in a private firm??? Maybe in CA where you came from but not most of the other companies elsewhere.

I retired from one of the largest companies in the U.S. Some of his remarks may have got him a caution, or at most a letter in his file, but he would not have been fired.

248 Mixed feelings about all this. Y-not makes some excellent points. It's a shame that Honors is getting the boot but his behavior does seem reckless in the circumstances. You don't flout "company policy" even when it's unwritten--perhaps especially when it's unwritten--and expect nothing to come of it. Maybe the company policy sucks but even so policy is policy and you have to abide by it. Also I have to say that his behavior seems rather immature for a man of his age with his responsibilities. There should be a degree of emotional distance physical between a senior officer and his crew. The senior officer should be a figure of dignity and decorum. I cannot imagine the rugged but noble white-haired admirals of World War II comporting in such a manner. But I'm a Midwesterner and I was raised to suppress my emotions and admire men who do likewise.

Posted by: Steve (aka Ed Snate) at January 04, 2011 12:54 PM (LEMIN)

249 Senior officers throw junior officers to the wolves every day of the week without a second thought.  It has been that way since at least the 1960s, maybe forever.  The precious career must be protected no mater how many lives must be trashed.

Yes, there are exceptions, but most of them don't make two stars of higher.  Flaming asshole = 2, 3 or 4 stars.

The real mystery is how we still manage to attract good men to service in our military, what with the piece of crap senior officers and military-hating Congress (mostly, at least), media and universities.

It's obvious that you've never been in the military let alone been in a war zone.  Military men fight hard under conditions you can't even contemplate.  What they do to relieve that stress when they stand down will always seem a bit bizarre to "civilians".  There was no harm done with these videos.  It was nothing but warriors letting off steam and learning to laugh again.  But I'm really not expecting you to understand that.

Well I don't doubt it and if it's a first offense probably most companies would let the malefactor off with a reprimand. But I've worked for a bunch of companies and so has my wife and all of them would take a very dim view of non-PC actions and words. Most companies would not fire someone for a first offense because they would fear legal retribution but the "malefactor" could probably also kiss goodbye any chances of career advancement or promotion in that company. What's more, if those specific videos had been made in the civilian corporate world, they would almost certainly have gotten the maker fired at most companies.

259 193 151 OK, You can call me sexist now. Have official complaints gone way up since women joined the navy? The reason I ask is I have worked at a major hospital for the past 30+ years. I'm a woman and a retired AF NCO and I totally agree.  I've said a number of times that not enough women learn how to be team players as children.  So when the get into the world of work, they use the tactics which work with their dad or their husband.

I had a hard time getting along in most offices because I'm not a gossiper and they're usually talking about some crap about which I don't give a rat's ass. Women view that attitude in other women with suspicion.

In World War II my dad was a Lt. jg commanding a patrol craft (PC) in the Pacific. In the Philippines he organized a beer party for his crew and took part in it. I have photos of the party. They are hilarious. But dad was 21 years old and his boatswain's mate and at least one other member of his crew were literally twice his age. They would never have expected an admiral to join the party. In fact if any admiral had walked by they would be more inclined to fall on their bellies and avert their eyes as if he were some oriental potentate.

275 CAPT Honors bought me a beer once. We were out in Gaeta inspecting the Mount Whitney in 2008. They did very well, considering her unique situation being alone overseas and having a hybrid military/civilian crew. The last night there, after the inspection was over, he and about half the crew were at the bar across the street from the base there, and he was BUYING.

The crew seemed to like him, and it was a bit unusual for a CO to do that - it's the norm for leadership that senior to keep aloof socially.

I got some real good stories about that bar, Rendevous.

279 Hola, This is pathetic, in my time at sea I've had several xo's do this, its known as raising morale. Makes me glad I'm out. And I hope the shitbag who released the tape dies of aids And WTF mr. Pink! I didn't vote for Obama's dumbass, I voted for the hot chick with nice legs

280 He should be gone and dishonorably discharged.  The worse thing in this entire world - including cancer and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and including Muslim extremism, Michele Obama's wardrobe is saying anything, anything that might hurt a ghey's feelings.

Forget dishonorably discharge - Make Him Walk The Plank - die socons for making ghey jokes, Die I Say!

281 There goes cohesion and trust.  Senior command throwing Honors overboard for these videos, after he had already be counseled they were in bad form, sends a message to everyone in the fleet to cover their a**es least you get keelhauled for saying something just a tad off-color.  In the USSR, it was the job of political officers to ensure the officer corps always said the correct political things or else.  We seem to be heading there.

283 " CAPT Honors bought me a beer once. We were out in Gaeta inspecting the Mount Whitney in 2008. They did very well, considering her unique situation being alone overseas and having a hybrid military/civilian crew. The last night there, after the inspection was over, he and about half the crew were at the bar across the street from the base there, and he was BUYING."

Sounds like either Moniques (Owners daughter was our neighbor), Rendezvous or Vic's. Spent 7 years there on two tours with LaSalle.  The hybrid crew shouldn't have been too bad but for every repair, they had to bring the locals up from Napoli.

*I could tell you  horror stories*

284 #197, sometimes it's really funny when the women decide to be the politically incorrect ones. I knew a good looking female E-5 from the forward support company who was trying to make "I Must Increase My Bust" by Lords of Acid work as a running cadence. The beats per minute change just didn't adapt though. She just thought it would be hilarious to have a company that was 75 percent men repeating along with the chorus.

I never got to use "My daddy was a Nazi and my mommy was a bitch" again after 2001 though.

285 293. I was thinking Vic's myself, excellent sandwiches! Btw, why do you have to climb a damn mountain to use the exchange there? Did two lamadd tours myself

286 They would never have expected an admiral to join the party. In fact if any admiral had walked by they would be more inclined to fall on their bellies and avert their eyes as if he were some oriental potentate.

"Fuck 'em.  Let 'em walk."  I believe this is what the Chief said when he droped ramp and made Gen. MacArthur walk ashore in the Philippines.

If you did Avails in Gaeta in either 94-97, or 2000-2004 and set foot in Engineering, we probably met.

Monte Orlando was a consolidation effort. Prior to that, all the support facilities were scattered throughout Gaeta. Exchange was on the waterfront, housing was downtown, etc. Other then the parking issue, it was a huge improvement.
And yes, Vic's makes an awesome sandwich. His mother taught my wife how to make pasta sauce, and several other dishes.

Would go back in a heartbeat.

288 The U.S. Navy produces the most two-faced, back-stabbingest, smarmy, holier-than-thou, prim, punctilious, picky, hypocritical and emotional and moral bullies that I have ever known.

Just take a look at some of the A$$holes they've produced:

John F'n Kerry
Lyndon Baines Johnson
Richard Milhous Nixon
James Earl Carter

to name a few.

291 "Honors is being hung out to dry for something that was either fine with his then superiors or which he was duly critiqued for and allowed to move on in his career. Either way, this is ex post facto outrage and the senior leadership of the Navy has simply thrown a dedicated and decorated officer to the wolves."

Since when is this news?  200 years of tradition, unmarred by progress.   Don't think this won't ever happen again.  There has always been way too much hear no evil - see no evil in Naval aviation.  The other side of that coin has always been to shoot the scape goat whenever their frat house nonsense embarrasses the grown ups.  One dead scape goat = problem solved.  All fixed CNO.  Will never happen again.  And the 5th floor E-Ring pretends to believe it.

Lessons learned from tailhook: none.

292 By the way Drew there is no special additional nuclear training  for Enterprise XOs and COs. All prospective CVN XOs go through the senior officer nuclear training  program at Nuclear Power School and then the Nuclear power training unit. I was an instructor at the Idaho plant and trained  the surface group for a 4 year period. I even trained my own soon to be XO/CO of CVN 65. I did 2 tours on the Big E, made E5/6/7 and E8 on her. Also a tour at Airpac and CVN-72
Dave Head EMCM (SW) ret.
Bull Nuke
And on my first tour our Engineering Dept party gave away massages and hookers for door prizes. They also had a peso show. The Philippines had "what happens in, stays in" a LONG time before Vegas...

293 "Honors is being hung out to dry for something that was either fine with his then superiors or which he was duly critiqued for and allowed to move on in his career." Well, if he's deskbound, his career is pretty much over. You aren't gonna get to drive so much as a jetty, so I suspect he will put in for retirement at the first opportunity. Nice job Navy! All that money you spent to train him to drive a nuclear sub, and you pissed it away just because of some people goofin' on a video.

Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

Rendezvous. My favorite place there. We got so familiar with Alessia and her mom that when they closed the bar, they told us to stay. I won't drink Jaeger anymore, 'nuff said. She loves that stuff, and is willing to share.

Let me tell you about the night BEFORE. It was karaoke night at the Ren-des-vous. A friend of  Mama as there by the name of "Jenny". "Jenny" is well, a dude. My buddy, who shall remain nameless...OK his name is Ken, struck up a conversation with Jenny, and generally had a great time with "her". When he went up to sing, and he could sing, he "dedicated this song to a very special lady he met tonight" and he sang...Tommy and the Tutones "Jenny".  You know - 867-5309.

We couldn't stop laughing, it was so damn funny. Or maybe you had to be there.  Jesus, we got fucked up that night, all Chiefs and Senior Chiefs acting the young Sailors we used to be.

My other favorite memory is from November of  '07, our first time there and a buddy of mine was getting pretty fucked up elsewhere and we wandered in for a drink. He saw the setup of Mojito pitchers and these really long straws. He's already fucked up, and asks Alessia "what do I gotta do to get one of those straws?" She gives him this pitcher of Mojito and he looks to me and says "You gotta help me drink this". Fuck if I remember getting back to the Serapo hotel.

Good Times.
