So far, there are zero deaths or injuries outside the boundaries of the plant. There has been one death in the plant - a guy had a crane fall on him. It's a catasrophe for Tokyo Electric (plant owner). It should be nothing more than a loss of electricity for the Japanese as a whole but, because of press coverage making it seem like a NUCLEAR APOCALYPSE, it's causing a lot of stress and panic that they don't need with everything else going on. But the wild card is the cooling pond at reactor #4. If the rods there catch fire, it could be reasonably bad. Some local contamination. Unlikely that it would kill anybody outside the plant boundaries.

Insight to Fukushima engineering challenges

A pretty good article on all the challenges the engineers and operators faced at the two plants over the last week.  It is good to hear that they have gotten water to the cooling pond on unit 3 and will be working on unit 4 shortly.  The other bit of good news is that units 1-3 are all less than 100C, so they have finally turned a corner there.  I think that now that they have some power and the right spraying units that this mess will quickly fade from view.  The fact that some spinach and milk have some contamination above background isn't unexpected at this point. There is no need to stop buying milk or spinach because the tainted stuff will never make it to market.  Cows are great concentrators of bad things like PCBs and low level nasties, but milk is test ten ways from Sunday so you won't be getting them in your cereal.

Lets take the wins and be thankful that there is light at the end of the crisis tunnel.

Fox has been even worse than CNN for this event. As far as I am concerned they are just another part of the MFM.

Yes Vic scintillation detectors can dig down to crazy low levels. However, one thing about the Iodine measured in/near Tokyo. I would imagine that some of Japan's finest nuclear medicine facilities are located there. And yes they do use I-131 in nuclear medicine for diagnostics and treatment. If curious google around thyroid ablation I-131.

Do not be surprised if there is an increase in the amount of radioiodine detected onsite or near-site of the reactors once the operators successfully get their low pressure systems back into service (RHR).

As for the NRC Chairman (and Surgeon General) being held accountable, EVERYONE involved should be held accountable for what they did or didnt do. The NRC will undoubtably charter an investigation looking into this in great detail and it should be done with at least some of the experts not being government employees. The Chairman and Surgeon Generals actions should be part of their charter.

My wife has had thyroid cancer and radiation treatments. I was still working at the time and I had to let them know at work. Every morning when I went to work I had to go through the whole body detector before I went inside the plant.

That was the only way they could prove that if I got contaminated that it didn't come from the plant. (even though there should have been no I-131 on site anyway).

As for the NRC "investigating" the council itself and the chairman, good luck with that one. I suspect there will be a whole host of new regulations coming down in about 6 months, 99% of which are totally worthless.

110 Just listening to a press conference by the fire department chief responsible for dowsing for unit 3.  He said that at some point during the operation, the radiation from unit #3 dropped to near zero.  He said this would indicate that they were successful in covering the spent fuel rods.

Another spokesman mentions 500uSv (micro Sv) but unsure if before or after the operation.  Translator implied this was the reading before the operation started.

Fire chief said that the greatest dose recorded by any member of the operation according to dosimeter readings was 27mSv (mili Sv)
