— Ace Drew wondered why Jen Rubin wasn't gleeping over the Trump debate.
He reasoned she was taking a pass on the subject because Mitt Romney had not yet declined, and that the moment he did, she would then start talkiing about how awful it was, and how everyone involved was a clown.
See, she wanted to say that. But as she's Romney Super Fan #1, she couldn't say that. Not until Mitt actually opted out of the debate.
At any rate, Drew predicted that perfectly, as well as her eventual use of the word "clown" to disparage the event.

That's Slublog's excellent photoshop.
Odd Divergence In Blogger and Blog-Reader Preference: If Rick Perry only had to get bloggers' support, he'd be doing okay (and Romney would be in bad shape).
I wonder why that is. We tend to read the same things.

The solace I take is that Romney's campaign is a failure despite having far more money and establishment endorsements. All these journalists struggling to help Romney won't save him.
Everyone has had a chance to consider Romney by now. Those who reject him are very, very unlikely to ever vote for him.
Shame Perry's campaign is losing badly too. I'll still vote Perry, but I think the nation is not ready to elect an actual conservative. They need someone who will use government the best to take care of problems. They don't even recognize the superiority of someone who doesn't need to do that.

I think:
1. It is a mistake for Romney not to go.
2. It's a shame that the entire field of candidates can't make a unaminous decision -- either they all go or none of them go. Instead this debate has caused what we least need -- further division in the party.
3. I have no problem with Trump's debate.

Romney's decision says either he's scared that the debate will do more harm than good to his candidacy or it tells us he's so confident in getting the nomination he doesn't need it.
My instinct tells me it's the latter.

This is not a major decision, nor is it some potential disaster that will offend the People's sensibilities.

You know where Romney went when he was of draft age during Vietnam? France.
That's right, where John Kerry went too. Only Kerry at least spent six hours in combat first. Even John Kerry is more manly than Romney, who starts crying for Andreson Cooper to save him from the debating genius of Rick Freaking Perry (sorry, I like Rick, but come on).
Romney couldn't even handle a fairly mild follow up on Fox News. The most predictable crap in the world.
Romney is afraid of Donald Trump speaking plainly on Romney's horrible record. Romney has appreciated MSNBC and CBS not having anything critical to say of it.
There is a reason the establishment pushed up early state elections. There is a reason the GOP establishment happily arranges all these debates with liberal news networks: they like big government. They want Romney to succeed because they need that big government to line their pockets with the money they steal from your kids and your grandkids.
I don't like Trump, but Romney's reason for avoiding him are entirely self preservation. I can only imagine this sissy dealing with Russia or Iran.

Perry's going to do a bus tour through Iowa, pretty much non-stop through the end of the month. Anita is scheduled to campaign for him as well. Ron Paul is doing a lot of town halls, Santorum has one on the 9th; Newt doesn't have a stop scheduled until the 14th; Romney is only scheduled to be in Iowa for the debate on the 10th along with the rest of them.
60% of caucus voters say they can be persuaded to support another candidate. More than half say they want to eliminate HUD and the EPA. A flat-tax, reducing business regulations and taxes are also other big concerns.
There is some hope in all that for Perry, but he is going to have to have one hell of a ground game there. Hard to find any news about local political leaders and what they are doing.

drew, what is the "odd" divergence in blogger and blog-reader support for the GOP candidates? It appears from your link that the two are about the same. At least if you look at the results of your polls on this site, they are similar. The bloggers support Newt, Perry, and Romney in that order. HQ supports Perry first and the blog reader polls here still have Newt barely in front of Perry, even with the top down attempt to turn their support.
Thus it seems that internet wide blog readership is likely in line with the bloggers when it comes to support of the GOP candidates.

Not trying to be confrontational or trollish here. I actually saw the poll at Althouse and followed her link to see who had responded and was surprised to not see the AoS's listed.
I know (and expect it to be so) that the co-bloggers won't all have the same views, but would sort of expect that the blog would "speak" with Aces views when it speaks publicly.

The evangelical vote is decisive, disunited and up for grabs in Iowa. He needs the state if he wants to make a comeback. What do you expect him to do? March in a pride-parade?
Perry could have done what Newt did, and did a positive ad; except instead of about America, about American's Christian heritage and, say, Christian soldiers serving in the military.Instead, he chose to weirdly combine a pro-Christian ad with slagging members of the military on active duty during wartime.

I don't think that's limited to Iowa.
"Campaign Carl" Cameron said his sense is that the evangelicals and Tea Party types are willing to compromise and what they really seem to want is a candidate that will slap Obama around. Newt seems to be that man, to them.
"Campaign Carl" is telepathic.

But thats the point, isnt it? He has to show that he's more evangelical, more Christian, more Moses than Newty-Pie. So he tries to out-Santorum the frontrunner, since social issues are definitely Newts soft spot. Bland, positive adds just wouldnt do the trick.

Then soldiers of whatever faith at the soon upcoming Christmas, and showed them in a religious ceremony of some type, such as a field service. All the while, while talking about America`s Christian heritage.
Far better than disapproving of gay soldiers.
Lots of people will be rubbed wrong by that. It was gratuitous and unnecessary. No one was under the impression Perry supported gays in the military, but it's unnecessary to highlight this in his ad.
Lots of service members have no problem with gays, and lots of Republican voters too. CERTAINLY whatever a person's thoughts are on gays, many are willing to give deference to those putting their lives on the line in combat.
There's no good reason to publish an ad disapproving of them. A bit of decorum would have been nice.

First, since when did the majority view in the Republican party be for gays serving openly in the military? IIRC, GOP voters wanted to keep DADT.
Second, the ad is not about slamming gays in the military, but about aligning with the priorities of the majority of conservative voters. The point of the juxtaposition in that sentence between the gays serving openly in the military and children openly celebrating Christmas is to say that Obama's priorities are screwed up.
The point of that ad is to appeal to socons. There's nothing wrong with it and nothing wrong with a GOP candidate objecting to the administration's push to repeal DADT.

Look, I actually agree with you concerning this election and in general Im not much of a socon. But its Iowa we're talking about and considering that every top tier candidate has some problem with social issues, Perry might see it as a useful niche to boost his numbers. I dont think it will work, but I guess that this is the rational of the Perry campaign.

Most Americans aren't gay. However, most know gays. Most like at least one or two gays, or have them in their family. This wasn't smart politics.

Posted by: Emperor of Icecream, Cultist for Jesus at December 07, 2011 09:53 AM (epBek)
Thanks for the courtesy, however I'm not gay or in the military. I just see Perry's ad as really stupid politics, and disrespectful to gays I know. Any gay, or straight, or Christian or Jew, or atheist or pagan, Republican or Democrat, serving in the military has my respect for that.
As I said above, this ad could have been straight-out pro-positive-Christian-heritage, or it could have even attacked OBAMA for interfering with the military, but to express disapproval toward the military members themselves is just dumb and offensive.
EVEN IF gays serving openly in the military is a serious policy flaw (Sparta seemed to do alright, as does Israel and other nations), the politically smart thing to do when you're scrounging for GOP votes is to go after Obama on this, NOT a small but courageous group of the US military ... who, whatever you think of the current state of the law, are now serving openly and LEGALLY. It's not their fault if the law is wrong: they're just following it.

The Pew poll finds that Republicans overall are closely divided on DADT repeal, 40-44. But the breakdown of Republicans is striking. It finds that “moderate” and “liberal” Republicans strongly favor repeal, 62-26. The only reason Republicans are closely divided at all is because conservative Republicans oppose it, 28-52.
This is the Republican primary. When Romney and Bachmann decided to paint Perry as a liberal, he had to tack right.
Sure, we all know gays. That has nothing to do with whether or not it was wise policy to rush repeal of DADT and implementation of gays serving openly. To suggest otherwise is a liberal argument based on emotion.

We accept "X"; why do we as a country have a problem with "Y"?
---
Truthfully, that's exactly as I heard it.
I still don't see where the alleged personal attack on servicemen is supposed to be. Perhaps they could have changed the script from (paraphrasing) 'gays openly serving in the military' to 'repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell' -- which would make it more clearly about the policy, not the people. But even as written and filmed, it is not an attack on anybody.
Posted by: Y-not at December 07, 2011 10:10 AM (5H6zj)
I think Perry's body language strongly belies his "acceptance" of it. Palms down, disapproval; followed by quick opening of palms, approval (of children).
Whether planned (of course it was rehearsed! It's a 31-second spot and they have body language experts, for goodness sakes) or not, there was nothing in Rick Perry's tone or demeanor to suggest "acceptance".
Yes it could be read that way -- had he delivered it completely different. But even if this was a highly likely double meaning mistake, you gotta watch out for those things in politics; you really do. This is a scripted set-piece commercial, not an off-the-cuff moment.
Even if Perry meant, "We accept gays serving openly in the military," it is apparent to me he was also communicating his personal disapproval.
Now wouldn't an ad like I suggested above (as derived from some of the comments by other commenters mentioning the President) going after Obama for tinkering with the military's social culture during wartime be better than what you saw here?
Because I'm hardly the only person that saw it this way.

The ad is drawing a distinction between the tolerance extended to gay military members on the one hand, and the lack of tolerance for people of faith on the other. ItÂ’s not so much a DADT issue being raised here, but rather Perry calling out the Democrats on their hypocrisy.
