— Open Blogger This November, a ballot initiative in the city of San Francisco will allow citizens a chance to vote on banning circumcision. Circumcision, the process of cutting off the foreskin eight days after birth, is a Jewish tradition. In the Torah, G-d told Abraham that circumcision was part of the Covenant, or manÂ’s promise to G-d.
It should also be noted that countless medical studies show that circumcision has many health benefits, not the least of which is a decreased likelihood of contracting HIV. I'm sure HIV isn't really an issue in San Francisco though.
However, the leftists in San Francisco(read: All of San Francisco) have decided that circumcision is inhumane and therefore should be illegal. They have argued that it, like abortion, is an issue of choice. The babies do not have a say in the matter, therefore the parent's should not be allowed to decide for them.
Many in the Jewish community have seen this anti-circumcision movement as a stealth anti-Jewish measure. Parents donÂ’t have to get their child circumcised, therefore why outlaw it? Why outlaw a procedure that is mandatory for all Jewish men, even older converts. If itÂ’s really about choice, why not let the parents choose? Choice implies having options.
The Jewish community never had any clear proof that this movement harbors anti-Judaic movitves, only the suspicion of it. That is until now. Thanks to Zombie we have access to an anti-circumcision comic book put out by the backers of this Novembers ballot initiative.
Look at the photographs yourself and tell me this isnÂ’t anti-semitism.

Judaism predates Islam by over a 1000 years, however circumcision did take place in ancient egypt.
However, it was popularized(if i can say that) by the Jews.
The vast majority of Americans are circumcised and it is in no small part because of Jewish influence in America, specifically in the medical field.
However the number of circumcisions had been on the decline for some time in america.

We can discuss how particularly healthy it is to spend your adult life consumed by resentment and anger and a fantasy about how great your sex life would be if your pee-pee wasn't chaffed, but the argument that good hygiene is enough and circumcision unnecessary really isn't a hard sell *except* for the minority of people belonging to a religion that mandates it. I think a lot of it has to do with geographic concentration. So many Jews are still in the highly-Democrat regions of the Northeast, so the only thing they know about Republicans (and Christians) is that they're dangerous people out there somewhere in fly-over country.

Yep. But instead of doing it at 8 days, when the pain is inchoate and unlocalized and never forms a lasting memory, Muslims tend to do it around 9 years, when the procedure is very painful and the recuperation takes days.
In the National Museum in Jerusalem, one of the artifacts is a circumcision bed from the household of a well-to-do Muslim family. Its distinguishing characteristic is a hook that hangs down from the center of the canopy to hold up the bedsheets so that they don't touch the tender wound of the circumcised boy.

Also the Qur'an, sura 3 anyway, claims to be an update / clarification of the Torah on the Ishmaelites' behalf. There is a general theme of following the "Sunna of the Prophets" elsewhere.
So, although circumcision isn't in the Qur'an directly, it implies that doing it would be a way to follow the example of Abraham. And all of this entered the Hadith and Islamic law in various forms.

11 is a pretty normal age for that, though, right?
I "bloomed" at 11. Most of my friends followed in a couple of years but there were some holdouts till 14-15 but mostly in the anorexic crowd. It puts a stop to further height which is unfortunate. Never did grow into the last 10 speed bike.

About the history repeating thing, don't forget Hadrian (IIRC, he banned circumcision just before the time of a major historical massacre of Jews, inter alia).
As for "male genital mutilation," I had no choice but I don't think I've missed out on anything. But when I was in Austria they all creepily assumed I was Jewish. Strangest moment my entire two Summers there. Too much f-ing perspective...

I've watched and sat through the traffic. There must be some explanation, I cannot see. I've avoided more times than I've gone through. And I thought the job interview was tough,( even when they paid my way). Oh, once hopped on a street car and the driver yelled at me. Different drugs and usage rates. More 'professional' prostitutes in Europe which follow good preventative practices. Less orgy style risque and more normal stable relationship sexuality amongst European gays. Fewer blacks in Europe, as they are a demographic which uses condoms the least and the men prefer drier non lubricated sex, which leads to more bleeding from sexual activity. Many US states also don't allow the sale of clean needles from pharmacies, so there's more of a spread from illicit IV drug use. Where in Europe more countries allow for anyone to buy clean needles, so there's less sharing of contaminated needles.

The biggest "pro" to it is that, later in life, a man may lose full use of his hands and not be able to clean the region. Infant circumcision is then an insurance policy against that day - because it hurts less at 8 days, and is less of a trauma, than at 80 years.
These arguments do not apply to cliterodectomies.
I agree that there are "cons" too. What I don't get is the emotion on the side against it. "But it's the PRINCIPLE!" Well... um... why does it really matter to you?

Not just later in life. My sister didn't have her kids circumcised. At the age of 11 my nephew announced that he had pain in his penis. Turns out he was a little careless in the maintenance department, resulting in balantis--inflammation of the glans--which in turn caused phimosis, a foreskin that can't be retracted from the glans.
Because of the scarring that resulted from his chronic infection, he was unable to have a preputioplasty, which would have left him with a normal-looking organ. Instead, he had to have the procedure called a dorsal slit, which has given him the dreaded "turkey neck" (Figure 4 in the second illustration):

He might be able have another surgery as an adult, but maybe not. Don't let anyone tell you that leaving boys intact poses little risk. This kid didn't take care of himself and ended up with a malformed penis.

Far as I know, that is not any legal requirement in these here United States.

It is not a "tradition" it is a commandment. The only reason for not circumcising an infant on the eighth day (by an expert and religious mohel) is for an actual medical reason that would harm the baby such as hemophilia (permanent) or jaundice (which delays the circumcision until it is cured).

The men in my family aren't circumcised. I would recommend not doing it. Be clean and don't butt f*ck anything that moves and it's not going to be a medical issue. But female circumcision removes the clitoris and truly *does* mutilate. It is intended to make it impossible for a woman to become sexually satisfied, it's intended to destroy sexual pleasure. Women who hate sex don't step out on their husbands. It's a physical d*mn chastity belt. As a side effect it makes a woman more sustainable to disease rather than less.

I'm also moderately "tongue-tied" (apparently called Ankyloglossia at least wne more severe).
Was having oral surgery and had the doctor offer to snip the fold of skin... never thought about it really before then. Usually parents will choose to have this snipped when a child is young as well (if necessary). Wouldn't be upset if my parents had chosen to do this, but didn't want to have multiple complications healing in my mouth simultaneously so left it be (after 35+ years figured it might confuse my speech more than it'd help anything).
For those anti-circumcision; are you opposed to this procedure on kids as well? Should they all have the choice I had? Or is one fold of skin crucial and necessary to defend, and another a non-issue that nobody needs to worry about?
Why is a fold of skin on my penis that I don't need something I must keep so I can choose later, but one under my tongue something that nobody ever needs to worry about? Or is there an "anti-tongue-tie correcting surgery" group out there?
Maybe I'm asking this the wrong way. Why is my penis magical and something that others really desperately need to be involved with again?
