The chances of big Dem donors giving to a supposed Blue Dog like Webb isn't high in a year where the Dems are defending so many seats.  Putting current DNC chair Tim Kaine in that slot, though, will likely cause donations to increase.  Still won't help them keep the seat.

I bet half the state thinks John Warner is still in there and the other half doesn't know who is there. He hasn't done shit, hasn't said much, and just votes quietly lib. Ace - We picked up a fair number of seats this time around and the current Republicans at the state level seem to be very popular. I don't think a lot of Virginia can be called purple any longer. The DC suburbs will always be full of people who tend toward the big government/liberal side of the balance, they're just voting their perceived best interest.

You've got him pegged.  I think in VA, he was the Dems' best shot in 2012.  Despite his liberal voting record, the Dems weren't going to put up anyone else who could possibly be even plausibly as conservative as him.

Read his quite good book on the Scotch Irish contribution to America.  Webb's an old time Southern populist/isolationist who learned to distrust Republicans on his granddaddy's knee.  He's conservative on social issues but knows jack about economics and thus loves to shaft corporations almost as much as John Edwards.  Webb can also hold a grudge for decades.

Look - the only reason Webb won the election is that Allen ran what may have been one of the top five worst campaigns for major office in US history - I know, I was there. He (Allen) and his staff sincerely believed that they had the election sewn up from day one. At about three weeks out they finally realized that they were in a race, but by then the damage was done.

If Allen indeed is the candidate, I'd like assurances that he learned some lesson...

Webb is not even close to being a "conservative" on social issues. I know these Democrats, 20 years ago I was one of them. They all were proteges of Chuck Robb. He being the man that the DLC was grooming to run for President. Chuck liked to talk about how conservative he was, but when push came to shove, he always sided with the liberals. The only thing that could even be construed as being conservative was that he voted to make sure the Defense Dept budget wasn't cut too much. Webb does the same thing.

The reason why Robb was pretty much able to get away with it and Webb didn't is the internet. Back then we had The Washington Post, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginian Pilot, and Roanoke Times as the only media really covering DC and Richmond in depth. The Times-Dispatch is somewhat conservative, but the others are far from it. Hell, the Roanoke Times makes the Post look downright conservative.
