Jimmy Carter, Redux
— Monty

Instapundit has a recurring theme that a return to the Jimmy Carter era might be a best-case scenario at this point. Ronald Browenstein makes the same point at The National Journal.

President Obama’s approval ratings are now frequently running at 45 percent or lower—not enough to win a second term. Two recent national polls placed the approval rating for Congress near its all-time low. Consumer confidence measures are scraping lows comparable to 1992 and 1980, years that produced electoral earthquakes (and independent presidential challengers).

“I think this is way beyond those years in the level of building frustration, problems facing the country, and anger with both political parties and the political system,” says Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg, who advised Bill Clinton during his 1992 victory. “This kind of building frustration and volatility has got to burst out in some way.”

President Obama is not solely to blame for our current troubles, any more than Jimmy Carter was responsible for those in the 1970's. But President Obama, like Carter before him, completely lacks the skills and self-awareness to lead the country out of the doldrums. A President (among his many other duties) is supposed to act as the rudder for the ship of state -- and our country is adrift right now because no one is steering it. President Obama is again like Carter in the strange mix of activist passion combined with political passivity he exhibits. ("Leading from behind", many pundits call it.)

It would be premature to write off a second term for Obama, though. The voting population is far more polarized and partisan now than it was in the 1970's, and our fiscal problems far worse and more intractable. Democrats are being pushed against a wall, and like any cornered beast, they may decide to fight to the bitter end rather than surrender.

UPDATE: Reuters piles on.

5 Yes, this era is much worse than it was during the Carter years. Carter was an incompetent shit which kept him from being the worst President ever.  But he never actively tried to destroy the country an alienate all our allies.

As for Obama and reelection he only stands a chance of being reelected if we run another McCain and the base stays at home in those critical red States that McCain flipped to blue last time.

This is also a fight for survival of the Cargo Cultists - welfare cheats, lazy assed leeches, etc. They will not go down quietly either. The incestuous relationship between the Dims and the leeches is what got us here and they will NOT go quietly into the night.

President Obama welcomes Packers to White House

President Obama didn't waste any time acknowledging his allegiances, "I'm just going to come out and say it, this hurts a little bit. Â… You guys come to my house to rub it in. What are you going to do next, go to Ditka's house?"

13 Obama is much worse the Carter. For all his faults Carter did not have a specific intent on causing America to fail. Ironically enough Obama has a much greater chance of being reelected than Carter did. The country is a lot dumber today that it was in 1979-1980. Thirty additional years of leftism in the mass media and in public education have had their inevitable effect. Also, blacks will be motivated to vote for Obama (at the obligatory 90-plus percent ratio), whereas there was no direct tie between the black demographic and Carter, other than the Democrat Party I.D. itself. Social conservatives today stay home and don't vote in greater numbers than they did 30 years ago. There's nothing that can be done about that. Lastly, Carter had to face an A+ general election candidate in Reagan. If Perry is the nominee you could make a case that he's politically at that level. But what if Romney is the nominee? At best Romney is a B+ candidate. That might not be enough to defeat the union-media-academia-zombie cabal.

16 Obama's "bad luck" is the predictable result of insisting the "system" is broken instead of realizing that around half of the citizens in this country are incapable/ignorant of contributing their fair share of effort.

Capitalism really doesn't work if you remove yourself from the "producer" line and go stand in the "looter" line, with the Democrats promising you that the rewards for the latter are far greater than the former....If only you vote for them to make sure that's the case.

It's not their ignorance and arrogance that's most galling and un-American, it's their cynicism. They honestly believe this country needs to be re-made to coddle the "losers" (to use Rick Santelli's word) instead of teaching losers how to win. Obama likes to compare himself to Reagan, the solution to Carter, but he is King Midas in Reverse. They have sandblasted, pitted, scraped and rubbed the shining city on a hill into a shack by the river, a Habitat for Humanism model home. 2012 cannot come fast enough.

A year is a long, long time in politics, Vic. And there are Democrats who will vote for Bammer no matter what. Just look at the mule-headed opposition to any reform at all of Medicare/Medicaid -- it's obvious that the programs cannot continue as they are, but partisan ideology trumps reality for these people every time. If Bammer runs again, they'll vote for him. Count on it.

The campaign will be a dirty mess, one of the nastiest, if not the nastiest, ever seen.  The unions will be mobilized and on steroids, as will the blacks, and the class-warfare tactics the JEF will use will bring out all those that want or get something from government, but pay no federal taxes.  And that is a lot of voters.

24 The Packers are everything Obama is not. 11 opening-day starters on the DL, no problem. Super Bowl injury to Donald Driver so Jordy Nelson takes over with 9 catches. Injury to Charles Woodson, Jarret Bush takes over and intercepts two passes, including the dagger.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy's method of "stacking successes" each week, solving problems as they appear, getting everyone on the same page. Veteran leadership, rookies going all-in.

26 Actually, I'd say the comparison to Jimmy Carter isn't fair.

Yes, JC was an arrogant, incompetent narcissist too,  but I think you can argue Carter thought he was doing the best things for his country, even if he was completely wrong.

Does anyone seriously think Obama gives a damn about how many jobs he is killing? How much he is destroying the productive class to feed his insatiable government class constituents? Obama wants a weaker, poorer America.

Vic. And there are Democrats who will vote for Bammer no matter what.

True, but that all important factor of voter turnout becomes the election turning point. In 2008 McCain hampered the Republican turnout while Obama greatly increased the Dem turnout. Someone like Perry or Bachmann will energize the base and increase turnout.

While hardcore union States will still have an active turnout, the right to work blue States will not.

28 Went back and found it:  “I think that we forget when he was alive there was nobody who was more vilified, nobody who was more controversial, nobody who was more despairing at times,” he said.

The JFK comparison didn't work.  The Lincoln comparison is laughable.  The only common denominator JEF and MLK share is the skin color, and JEF is only half-black.

30 I dunno, but Obama in a second term is very scary.

I spent a few days in Chicago this week. If you think these people are about to throw in the towel, think again. Some of them actually speak as though his second term is a forgone conclusion. They wish we could get to the election today. I was like-huh?

But before you laugh it off and call them delusional, take a moment to examine where they are coming from. First, the incumbent has a built in advantage. We can call him Carter, and he is. But Congress is not getting the greatest ratings either. Hence Obama's shift to try and say- "Hey, I am on your side- I hate Congress too, those lazy good for nothings..."

Obama is also already attacking the Republican candidates along with a press that is willing to carry his water. Don't be fooled by some of their recent attempts to criticize Obama. It is all part of their strategy to try and enhance their credibility, therefore believability, before the election. They will be an accomplice in the biggest smear campaign, funded with the biggest war chest, ever. The Republican candidate will be attacked relentlessly and needs to be steadfast and bulletproof. Ban on martial metaphors aside, this will be war

In the end, it is going to be a knock down, drag out, steel cage match contest. The people in Chicago have seen these contests go their way many times before. So I frankly don't count Obama out yet. It is going to be an endurance match and not for anyone with a weak heart. We need to be vigilant and focused like a laser to win. Otherwise we get Obama 2.0, and I can think of nothing worse.

72 Obama isn't Jimmy Carter - he's David Dinkins. Dinkins was a nice guy with no enemies, and was elected in large part as the "first black mayor" of NYC. In office he proved totally over his head and fiddled while Rome burned. It took a tough SOB like Rudy Giuliani to turn the City around after Dinkins, and it will take the same to turn the Country around after Obama. Why not the exact same guy?

Mish noted that RCP report, and opines: So there you have it. The unemployed create jobs. If only we had millions more unemployed, we could create millions more jobs, simply by giving the unemployed more money. Why didn't the WSJ hack fire back at Carney with this obvious retort? Like when Milton Friedman once saw a huge public works project excavating in China. (paraphrased) He asked "Why so many men with shovels?" The ChiCom answered "It's an employment project."  It is that there is a chance that his disastrous performance may be rewarded with a second term.

I have a dream, optimist that I am, that goes like this: The Vapid One® is reelected by the same idiot 52% that did it the last time.

At the same time, Tea Party candidates take over Congress with a veto-proof majority and a large, throbbing mandate that will last much longer than four hours.

TVO gets to watch helplessly as ObamaCare, Frank-Dodd, and everything else he's done in his first term is repealed. Meanwhile, the economy recovers and country finds out that too much government isn't good for children and other living things.

America ensues.

98 Hyman Rickover may well have been the meanest and most demanding prick ever to wear the uniform of the US Navy.  (During officer candidate interviews Rickover would sometimes compliment an applicant's neck tie and ask the candidate to give it to him.  Once, when a candidate refused, Rickover opened a file cabinet drawer to show the now successful applicant a collection of neck ties surrendered by failed applicants.)   He saw something in Carter that made him pick Carter for the nuclear sub program. That alone makes Carter a better person than Obama, whatever has happened since.

Of course, I could also grow green gossamer wings and fly to the moon in the next 15 months - nothing can be absolutely ruled out. However, the odds of ether O'barky or me doing either of those things are rather remote.

I can't recall  a case of malignant narcissism ever being cured - can any of you? So we can pretty much count on President Downgrade's numbers continuing to fall - it is an inherent personality problem - he'll become more insane and angry as the opposition to him continues to rise. He is starting to lose even the gullible youth vote - and that is a death knell for any Demonrat.

Wonderful use of taxpayer money dedicated to research...its about on par with the money expended teaching Africans how to wash their genitals.

Why bother trying to study and answer basic and fundamental questions such as how proteins fold when the age-old (non) conundrum of "wheter or not boys masturbate more than girls" needs answered yet again?

152 I disagree with the premise. Obama created this mess on purpose and now it has spun out of control. He will try the failed Socialist polices to try to fix, but they won't work nor have they ever. Obama is cold, mean and a socialist and doesn't care about anything or anyone except himself. At least Carter loved America but was an idiot. Obama is a traitor and hates America.

Posted by: John Hipkins at August 13, 2011 08:45 AM (qXGZK)

153 "Boys took more pleasure in self-pleasure: half said they masturbated at least twice a week, but only 23% of girls reported the same frequency. While fewer than half of girls reported ever masturbating, the survey found that close to three-quarters of boys said they did."

The authors' conclusions are interesting. What I would have taken from these data is that:

1. 49% of boys lie.
2. 72% of girls lie.
3. Anybody who thinks that this kind of study is important is a fool.
4. Anyone who takes funding for this kind of a study is a thief.

Democrats are being pushed against a wall, and like any cornered beast, they may decide to fight to the bitter end rather than surrender.

Monty, don't forget that there are an awful lot of just plain old Americans who feel besieged too. And there are a lot more of us than there are of Dem.

Remember the historic shellacking the Dims took in the last midterms. I look for that to continue in '012, and to possibly intensify.

Posted by: BackwardsBoy at August 13, 2011 08:47 AM (d0Tfm)

166 Not that Carter deserves any credit, but the debt when Carter left office was bascially nothing to when Obama finally leaves.  That's where this is all different, even if we literally had Reagan himself.   From the reliable stuff I have read of late, our situation is dire.  Reagan didn't have to raise taxes and make big cuts in everything from military, social security, food stamps, medicare etc... in the middle of a depression just to delay bankruptcy.

The time for the choice of tax cuts or services reform is way past, now its both tax raises and service cuts.  Even then no point in future is the debt being paid down.  The baby boomers whole lives were spent pushing for low taxes and unconstrained government intervention at home and unconstrained government intervention abroad.  while never minding that their few social security years of surplus were being spent and replaced with meaningless IOU's.  They tried to cheat math and have it both ways and now we will all have it no ways.

What the next guy faces will be all awful choices, that everyone will hate. We know the left will be no help and will exploit anything but tax increases for their political benefit.  The last moment to salvage this was exactly when I sensed it, in 2004-2005 the soon to be gone Republican majority could have passed bill after bill turning power over to the states and negotiating bankruptcy with the debt.  The left would have gone along with it as they were demoralized after Kerrys loss and would for that brief window have been willing to accept having socialized medicine in blue states rather then nowhere.

He is a gun grabber which is huge no-no in most red States

He also joined forces with Clinton and the Dems to give them standing to sue over the line item veto. IOW he is a backstabber.

Those are major negative factors that are easily found w/o researching all the other positions.

173

"But President Obama, like Carter before him, completely lacks the skills and self-awareness to lead the country out of the doldrums."

This doesn't really hit the mark. It's not that he doesn't have "the skills", and "self-awareness" doesn't even seem relevant.

I think of it more like a case of having a house burning down, and looking to an arsonist to put the fire out.

More precisely, the things that need to happen to get us out of this are things that Obama simply doesn't believe in, and - like any true believer - the fact that economic times are bad is just a secondary distraction from his pursuit of his "social justice" values.

So - far beyond lacking the leadership experience and ability  (and he IS embarassing in how obviously lacking in those areas he is) - it's more important that he completely has no interest in leading us out of this. He's only interested in campaigning - which is to say, in his case, in roaming across the nation preaching socialism (but you're racist, or a "terrorist", if you call it that).
