Jobs Numbers [Domenech]
— Guest Blogger

First Friday of the month means jobs numbers. We're looking at 103K jobs created in September, exceeding expectations. But unemployment rate stays at 9.1%. We've been between 9.0 and 9.2 since April with basically no movement.

Broader U-6 unemployment rate increased to 16.5% from 16.2%. And according to BLS, the number of long-term unemployed - those unemployed for six months or more - was 6.2 million, making up 44.6% of the total unemployed.

Frankly, this means weÂ’re just keeping pace with population growth. This is what a managed decline looks like.

Update: As commenters note, this number includes the 45k striking Verizon workers coming back into the fold. Also, Jim Pethokoukis has some thoughts.

5 Doesn't the disparity between U-3 9 (steady) and U-6 (up) just mean that more people are moving to long-term unemployment?  It's a worsening situation, then, not a stable one.

6 Payrolls climbed by 103,000 workers after a revised 57,000 increase the prior month that was more than originally estimated, Labor Department data showed today in Washington. The median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey called for a rise of 60,000. The gain reflected the return to work of 45,000 telecommunications employees. The jobless rate held at 9.1 percent. Sure count returning Union thugs who strike and also ruin company equipment. Great stats

7 I expected these better than expected numbers because they were floating the 60,000 job number all week. This lets the media claim how much better we are doing.....Riiiiight

9 100K (esp. less 45K Verizon) is less than a rounding error in a country of 300 million people.  SCOAMF.

10 Let's not forget that next month the jobs numbers will be revised "unexpectedly" downwards.

11 Bear in mind that they're counting the 40K or so CWA workers who were on strike last month but went back to work as "gains". So the real number is somewhere south of 60K.

15 To put the proper perspective on the situation... heeerrrrreeee's JOE!

The guy that only enhances this administrationÂ’s credibility.  You know?  In a way I really think that SCOAMF may have made a genius decision in picking Biden.  Look at it for a moment.  Every time something comes up – the economy, Fast and Furious, the entire f—king left coming out in support of a bunch of (to be way generous) idiots – thereÂ’s Joe the Jenious.  Really – what goes through your mind when Joe shows up?  You roll your eyes and think to yourself, “Well.  There you have it.”   SCOAMF the genius.  Still a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure, but genius none the less.

This is wonderful news for people who make money by shuffling paper and pathetic cheerleader whores like Larry Kudlow. Somehow, it doesn't seem to be an entirely reliable bunch o' statistics. Didn't the latest "new jobless claims" number just come out? Wasn't it right around the "normal" 400K range? How does that play against the 103K "created" jobs?

I really don't understand this shit. Housing prices continue to fall, more American households are on some form of the dole, companies continue to announce layoffs, and yet the unemployment percentage is "steady" and the stuttering clusterf*** of a miserable failure and his butt-boy Biden assure us things are "getting better....

Maybe Monty's DOOM will put me some learnin'. I just don't follow the high-grade thought processes required to make this sound even remotely positive.

I was out of work for over three years and I didn't report to any government agency after I ran out of UE. All they know is I'm back in the workforce, such as it is. Part time and making about a third as much as I did four years ago.

"Managed decline" indeed. Forced upon us, like everything else about this stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure. All they know is destruction, particularly of the human spirit, which is necessary to feed their insatiable and psychotic lust for power.

Yesterday, Nancy Pelosi said, “God bless these people.”  The left has grabbed onto this movement with both hands.  They are this movement. These are the people who the left in this country are praising – thatÂ’s right, praising – as the answer to the Tea Party.  Is there anybody here who thinks this is taking this country in the right direction?  Is there anybody here who thinks this will end well?  Paul Krugman says of this movement, “Finally a movement that is angry at the right people.”  Look, we know heÂ’s an idiot, but even an idiot with a Nobel Prize should be able to piece together who the fucking tinkerers were who f—ked the system up to make it “more fair” that led to the cluster the world is in now.  Freedom and liberty – Thumbs up, or thumbs down?  America – Thumbs up, or thumbs down?  Is that over dramatic?

Yeah, to get the real unemployment number you pretty much have to double the "official" unemployment number.  That will give you a very rough estimate, anyway.  I don't know how you figure out the true number.

You are in the rightfully-maligned birth/death statistics in the Establishment Survey, and directly in the polling in the Household Survey.

I stopped putting up The Chart here because it was getting kind of old. I put it up at IB, though, because a few people keep asking for it.

Household Survey shows 398K jobs added, but 444K of them are part-time due to economic reasons. Some progress.

Jjmurphy,

Yeah.....no one is keeping track of the numbers of small business people who have shut down their businesses in recent years due to the recession.

Unless you were on someone else's payroll....or have filed for unemployment....you aren't counted by the govt.

Some people on FBN have mentioned this, and estimate that with those numbers figured in....Unemployment is really at around 18% to 19%.

I would look for jobs created or business relocations, if I were you, rather than unemployment per se.

The governor's office in my state (Utah) has a website announcing corporate relocations and the like.  I expect most governors do that.  In our case, we have attracted Adobe, who is building a massive facility in north Utah County (south of Salt Lake) and several other IT/tech companies, plus we're getting an NSA data center in our region.  So Utah is a place to look at if you have a tech background.  We also have a lot of call centers here.

Our housing market (re-sales) is rebounding, up 25% last quarter, but prices are still great.  Our roads are being expanded/widened and they're laying fiber optic throughout the area (iirc that was part of the package to attract Adobe).

We relocated from California last year.  We took a bath on our house, but were fortunately not quite underwater in our loan so it was just a matter of losing lots on the sale.  Salaries are much lower here, but the COL is lower, too, so we feel we're on the path to rebounding and were secure enough to buy a house a couple of months ago.

He was surpruised Reid did that on what, by Senate terms, is a pretty small-ball issue.  He thought he would have saved that for something more important than defending Obama's own taxpayer funded do-nothing job.

But Reid will regret that move next year when the GOP takes the Senate.  And frankly, that's fine by me.

Unless you were on someone else's payroll....or have filed for unemployment....you aren't counted by the govt.

This is incorrect. The Household Survey calls up something like 600K people at random, so they do include the self-unemployed. The Establishment Survey does not include them, so they have a hoked-up small business birth/death model they use instead.

95 In the end, by the MFM and the left keeping the OWS in the spotlight should, in a rational world, only help capitalism.  It is clear that majority of the people in these protests don't have the remotest idea of what they are protesting, or why - useful idiots.  And that includes the celebrities.  They don't know what the f--k this is about.  Only the few users of the idiots know.  The ones who want to take power from one group and concentrate it in another - them.
Rational people will see this, I hope.  Rational people will remember that before communism self destructed because of its inherent fallacy, we fought against it for more than half a century because we knew it wouldn't work.
Let them keep it in the spotlight.  We should help shine the light on it.

Piece of friendly advice from a Perry supporter: If you want me to keep reading your argument, lay off the 'Perry doesn't have the smarts' line.  It's simply not a strong line of reasoning (with weak evidence to support it) and is, frankly, awfully reminiscent of the type of logic that got us Obama.
