Joementum: Lieberman's Out Too
— Ace

Too bad. He was maybe our best hope to keep a true-blue liberal out of the seat. (Connecticut was a stone cold sweep for Democrats in November, much to LauraW's chagrin.)

So he's gone now, too. Allah speculates that if he stayed in the race, he couldn't have won a real three-way race against a real Democrat and real Republican, but he might have bled off enough Democratic votes to give the GOP a shot.

But he's not doing that.

1 O goody, more Ned Lamont bumper stickers

Posted by: AE at January 18, 2011 12:48 PM (kSfPT)

2 I think he sees that he's not needed even in his premier niche: the Democrats have essentially taken all of GWB's policies in the GWOT, so it's not like he has to be there to be the lone Hawk among the Democrats any more.

What I'm not sure of (and I guess we'll know pretty soon) is this:  are these decisions to retire based on the Democrat Senators deciding to vote for repeal (to the point of Veto Override, even) and therefore acknowledgment they'll lose their base, or are they based on the Senators deciding to vote against repeal (to the point of Filibuster, if necessary) and acknowledging that tactic would lose everyone else?

3 Good old Joe: Good on the War on Terror, bad on practically everything else. Still, at least he had some integrity on the things that count. May he have a relaxing retirement.

6 LOL, the bumper stickers.  Lieberman, well, good on defense, but he wasn't about to repeal Obamacare, so...

Rob Simmons?  McMahon?  Well, maybe intandem with a Romney Presidential run, the state can get a red Senator?  OK, doesn't look good.

But like Delaware, you can't sink too much hope into... A BLUE SINKHOLE.

???? He WAS/IS a true blue liberal. The only thing he was not exactly like the rest of the Dems on was terror policy and Israel.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for CT. We will either get a Dem with a D after their name or a Republican that should have a D after their name.

As far as I am concerned there is no real difference between the two varieties.

15 Linda McMahon may have some fun with this.

Depending on the Dem candidate, she could win.

Even if she loses, I think she'll pour enough money into the race that the DSCC will have trouble holding the seat there PLUS defending in other states where they're more vulnerable like North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, Florida, Virginia, etc.

17 Liebs is a cooler guy than the average democrat scumball.

At least he was reasonably consistent and patriotic. And, even better, he seems not to be one of those Entitlement Babies like Zombie Ted Kennedy, Byrd, and the other who have had to be carried out of the Senate chambers in a body bag.

In a way, I'm sorry to see him go, especially since his replacement is almost sure to be much worse.

Even if they don't take another drubbing, expectations are they are likely to lose the Senate, and even if they don't, it would be an exercise in holding the line rather than wielding power. Dems don't like that.

Posted by: Oldcat at January 18, 2011 12:58 PM (z1N6a)

27 Lieberman did a good job with some important stuff in CT, unlike the POS Chris Dodd. The Groton Sub base is still alive and kicking, and he tried his best to bring in funds to make CT a biotech force. Yes, he's liberal on most stuff, but he always stood up for the troops, and that probably cost him his shot at reelection. He's not perfect by any stretch, but he is compared to Chris Dodd. Good luck, Joe.

29 Linda McMahon's got an outside chance to win.

First, Blumenthal's not running against her, and there's no equally popular or powerful Democrat in the state.

Second, the Bamster's going to be far too focused on states like Pennsylvania, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio in 2012 to worry about a stupid little in-the-bag state like Connecticut.  The Dem's on his or her own.

If you're worried that she'll lose because she was a retread, don't.  Circumstances were different then; Blumenthal was so popular that he told bald-faced lies about serving in Vietnam and couldn't tell anyone how to create a job, and still won big.  McMahon's showing was a testament to the race she ran in hostile territory.

I'm not saying she will win, but she's got a better chance than most, and she'll have the DSCC scrambling to dump money in Connecticut to prevent a monumental embarrassment.

He did write a letter of recommendation that got Glenn Beck into Yale (for one semester), so that may of unknowingly caused a small tear in the space-time continuum.

Mark Levin asks any caller from CT "Do you drive a Volvo??" --that along with Subarus form the majority of real estate for the earlier comment on the Ned Lamont stickers, still about as common as Kerry/Edwards stickers on I-95.

There were Lamont moonbats at stop sign intersections in our small town just screaming slogans at motorists.  I have to think that the whole process must have been a real eye-opener for Joe.  Dodd deserted him in his time of need as well, but the republicans did not.

That's not likely to help him with the liberal base in CT.

70 Well he had a 33% approval rating in Connecticut so I guess even a true-blue liberal is too rightwing for them.

You have an unfortunate habit of forgetting that the central characteristic of lefties and squishes—the thing that makes them lefties and squishes—is that they're obedient.

It's worst in New England, of course, because everything is. Journolist (or whatever) says "Lieberman is Cheney," and bam—approval in the shitter. Next day, and forever. But if they ("They") apply enough pressure, it even works on the free-thinking Alaskans. Remember? Journolist (and everyone else) says "Palin's a Jesus-WAR Bushitler racist fag-hatin' cracka Crusader 'tard," and her approval goes from 80% to 30%, immediately. And it stays there forever.

These are both politicians whose constituencies—the voters of their states, not their own voters specifically—loved them. And position-wise, they're probably the most average American politicians you can name; almost everything they think, almost everyone thinks. They're legitimately unhateable, except by the farthest statistical fringes.

And yet, the average lefty/squish fucking hates them. With the fire of a thousand burnt lattes. Because he was told to.

They do it because it works. Even on Lieberman.

Weicker's a special case.

He picked a fight with Sen. James L. Buckley (NY) and his brother, William F. Buckley, in the 70s after Buckley won a six-way race for Senator on the Conservative party line rather than the Republican party line.

Buckley et all threw in behind Lieberman to defeat Weicker in part because of that.

SON OF IRELAND JOINS MARINES

In the next few days, my brothers Robert and Eymard Willis and my sister Geraldine Daly and I are leaving Dublin, Ireland, to arrive in South Carolina to attend Eymard's son's graduation from Marine Corps Boot Camp in Parris Island.

His name is Oisin Willis from Tuam, Co, Galway, Ireland.  As proud Irish people we are very excited at the prospect of visiting your area and to attend the graduating ceremony on Friday in Parris Island.  We all feel so proud and priviledged to be part of your great nation's defense force.  We anxiously look forward to arrive and tour your area and also looking forward to seeing new faces and making new friends.  God Bless from Ireland.

Actually... other way around, I think.

The Chinese can't afford the show of opulence that Western Countries can (routinely), and so have to send their President over on a Commercial Airline with only the security which can be fit aboard it.

Remember that AF1 is, more or less, a flying White-House/Command-and-Control center.

Not that we can really "afford" it, either, but China is even more aware of status and image than most Americans are.  For them not to have State vehicles for formal State trips isn't actually speaking to their austerity, I don't think.

On the other hand, she's from Houston which is only slightly less liberal than Austin, so I'm not terribly surprised at her gross stupidity.

Why do you have to refer to FLOTUS that way?

170 @93: "Together We Rape"? Or, "Together We Drink"? How about, "Together We Sandwich the Waitress"? "Together We Lech"? The mind boggles at the branding possibilities for the "memorial rally." By the way, Joe Scarborough is a fracking a-hole for being "offended" that decent people thinking converting a memorial service for innocent shooting victims into a campaign stop for Obama is just a tad beyond the pale.

Guam is in no danger of tipping because its keel is made of lead.

177 China's intention is to suck the Middle East's oil reserves dry, and by using batty, Greenie, alternate sources like antiquated wind-mill power to reduce our dependence on oil, the sleazy Democrats are doing everything that they can do to give China access to all of the oil that they want. (Never mind that sleazy Democrat politicians have a vested interest in promoting the Greenie agenda. They are systematically betraying and selling out America.)

Posted by: RushBabe at January 18, 2011 06:23 PM (urYpw) Seriously, I wouldn't fret too much over how much we owe China. First of all, if we collapse... all that money we owe becomes absolutely worthless. Second of all, ultimately all those dollars will get repatriated to our country in the form of investments from abroad.

191 I don't know, #180. We'll need our reserves just to continue to create more plastic chemicals for the Chinese, so that they can continue to send us more plastic products from our own materials. Zany, but true. Our dependence on oil includes a huge dependence on one of its byproducts, the chemicals necessary to make plastics.
