John Lithgow Performs Dramatic Reading of Gingrich Press Release
— Ace

I hear the guy who wrote this is a great guy. So hopefully this won't follow him around too much.

But, as damaging as Gingrich's original statements were, this is actually what's going to drive him out of the race: The ridicule. You can get pretty far in American politics being wrong (hi President Obama!), but you can't get anywhere being ridiculous.

So this is damaging to Gingrich.

But it's also generally helpful to us. The more Gingrich looks absurd, the less respectable his comments about the Ryan's plan will be. The Democrats will still use his comments of course, to damage all those Republican congressmen who took substantial political risk to support a course of wisdom and restraint, but there will be at least some mitigation available, as Republican talking-heads can just roll their eyes and say, "Yes, that comes from the Hero who Emerges Unscathed from the Hail of Elite Bullets."

It doesn't undo the damage. It just makes it a little bit less.

I sorta like Gingrich and I even feel a little bad. But this is necessary for the good of the party. The guy basically put his own ambitions above party and principle and tried a Democrat style pitch in the Republican primary, to differentiate his brand and advance himself. (And then he tried that whole immigration-boards thing.)

He's playing for real, genuine Republican voters --- a lot of our voters do not like the Ryan plan and would like very much to pretend along with the Democrats that the plan is already fixed -- and that's a constituency, certainly.

But Gingrich was already shoulder-to-shoulder with Pelosi on cap-and-trade; he now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with her on Medicare.

"It is a flag we’ve planted that we will protect and defend. We have a plan. It’s called Medicare.”

Yes, that plan involves death panels for granny in ten years or less, or huge taxes on the young to support a bankrupt system, and all I can say is if the old plan on being unreasonable now they shouldn't plan on the young being reasonable later.

And yes, Gingrich wants some reforms here and there but he also wishes to pander, along with Nancy Pelosi, and perpetuate the fiction that this is all just a minor accounting thing that can be corrected with a band-aid here or there.

But none of that intergenerational warfare stuff is funny, while that press release is a scream.

Done Before and Better By James Lileks: Lileks already did this in a podcast. At around 3:45.

Thanks to Whatever.

I got this from Hot Air, but rather than link that (just to confirm I got it from there), here's Tom Coburn telling Gingrich to drink a nice tall glass of Where's Your Plan, Chief? juice.

Thanks to gg.

More: I hadn't seen the video of Newt's heckling until now. Here's that exchange.

His jokes aren't funny in the slightest. He's a Daily Show skit has gone on for five years.

Imagine if instead of making a Night at the Roxbury movie, SNL instead made it into a nightly 30 minute show.

That is Stephen Colbert.

It may have been humorous as an occasional skit, but it ceased being funny long ago.

33 Gingrich's problem is that he just can't accept that he's not the great visionary of the Republican party anymore. He doesn't seem to realize that the Contract for America was almost two decades ago and the result is that if anyone, like Ryan, comes out with a plan that shapes the Republican agenda Newt throws a fit like a spoiled kid looking for attention.

And they aren't like pro athletes who just abuse their bodies in their 20s and early 30s . The top wrestling stars routinely keep wrestling into their 40s, and sometimes 50s and even 60s. Ric Flair is still wrestling at age 62.

It's not just that. The writing became lazy, predictable, and so did the plot twists.

It's essentially the Sopranos now. A movie star or tv star will come in for one season, die and the end. Smitts, Lithgow, Stiles. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.

It should be noted that the first two seasons, the best two seasons, didn't rely on that gimmick.

NJ Episcopal Church to Feature Islamic Call to Prayer and Koran Readings this Sunday

..While there’s no minaret at the church, the words of “Allahu akbar,” (God is greater) will none-the-less invite both Christians and Muslims to worship side by side. During the interfaith service, verses from the Holy Qur’an will complement readings from the Holy Bible, including during Communion, embracing the traditions of both religions...

91 Still missing from the national discussion is making fun of the current occupant of the oval office. Mostly we all just sit around and go "What the fuck, are you shitting me?"

92 Yeah, the purported wrestling is fake, but the stunts aren't performed by doubles.

They do it into their 50s.  How hard can it possibly be?  As long as you don't fall off a platform 70 ft up.

If Newt wants out of this mess...he needs to disappear for a couple of months, and stay off the Leftists T.V. when he comes back. There is plenty of time before he really needs to get into the mix.

Guess what show he is going to be on this weekend?........De-Face the Nation!

What an Idiot! He doesn't seem to get it!

The pastor calls it an "organic" interfaith event.  I say if you want an interfaith event, when will the muslims let the Christians worship in their mosque?

98 80 Brian Blessed was on a Blakes 7 episode as a religious leader, plus the first season of Blackadder in full scenery chewing mode.
Totally puts Shatner in the shade.

If I had to choose my favorite Brian Blessed appearances, I'd go with Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, Much Ado about Nothing, and Hamlet. His work in Blackadder is a close second, though it's a different routine obviously.

99 @76 Dude, it's scripted, but the physical shock of doing all those stunts is real. But doing a backflip off the top of a ladder is a real thing. They are stunts designed to be safe, but stunts cause injuries all the time. That's why actors aren't allowed to do their own stunts.

And the safety aspect of wrestling stunts is probably less than advertised, especially as we learn more about head trauma. Being body slammed in a wrestling ring likely is doing repeated mild trauma to the brain. And this happens several times a night, several nights a week, 52 weeks a year.

But the main damage most of these guys do to their body is probably from steroids and other PEDs they use to bulk up. And the painkiller addiction is very common since there is no down time to recuperate from injuries.

If it's so darn hard, how can they do it into their 50s?  And you know those things are padded.

Face it.  They're a bunch of fucking asshole actors who give real wrestling a bad name.

102 Did you see the Lord John Whorfin head-bob there at the end?

Actually, he coulda done the whole thing as Whorfin...in other words, as Mussolini. Would've been every bit as fitting for Noot.

103 Lileks's rendition sounds like he was channeling Shatner. Also good, in its way.

104 @101 Well, I can't make you acknowledge reality if you refuse to. The large # of early deaths is just a fact you can look up if you feel like it. The huge # of surgeries and major injuries the typical wrestler experiences is another fact you can look up. The few who manage to wrestle into their 50s are the exception - a la Ric Flair. Most have to retire at much younger ages. And, of course, as they get older they stop doing the more athletic and dangerous stunts.

And calling them fucking assholes right after they died is a dick thing to do, but that's fine. I don't get the hostility.

Pro wrestling is an honorable form of entertainment that goes back 150 years to early American carnivals and other traveling shows. It's silly and stupid and over the top and cheesy -- but that's the point. It's intentional and everybody is in on the joke. It's Barnum and Bailey. It's a circus act.

Do you get angry at crazy gymnastics troupes (like Cirque du Soleil) for giving *real* gymnastics a bad name?

Are you angry at Evil Knieval for giving *real* motorcyclists a bad name?

It's a fun, stupid form of entertainment that requires a lot of physical sacrifice on the part of the people who do it. I don't get why this would make you mad.
