— Gabriel Malor This is the same judge who already found the Interior Department in contempt of court for its shenanigans with the summer's drilling moratoriums. Now he's ordering the Interior Department to start issuing permits (or permit denials) within a reasonable time instead of just sitting on permit applications:
“Not acting at all is not a lawful option,” Judge Feldman wrote, adding that the delays are “increasingly inexcusable” and were causing drilling companies to relocate their rigs to foreign waters. The interior secretary, Ken Salazar, imposed a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling in the gulf immediately after the Deepwater Horizon explosion in April, which killed 11 workers and spilled nearly five million barrels of oil into the ocean. Judge Feldman declared the drilling ban illegal in June, but Mr. Salazar modified it slightly, and it remained in place until the department lifted it in October.
However, despite the official end of the ban, Mr. Salazar and the agencyÂ’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement have not issued any deepwater permits.
The Interior Department has 30 days to make a decision on five permits.

There's a basic assumption that the various branches of government will respect each other. The current executive respects no one. I'm not sure what the other branches can do about it.

MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Scott Walker on Friday ruled out a compromise proposed by a key union to retain collective bargaining rights in exchange for public workers accepting benefit cuts.
At a press conference, Walker said he could not consider the offer by the largest state workers union because it only covered some public employees and came late in the process.
Walker and other Republicans have been trying to pass a controversial bill that would end a half-century of collective bargaining for most public workers in Wisconsin.
State Senate Democrats said they would stay away for days or even weeks, while Republican efforts to pass the bill in the state Assembly also faced an obstacle.
The 14 state Senate Democrats were meeting Friday in Illinois, and had no timetable for returning, Sen. Jon Erpenbach said at midday.

What's this?
China's health care system is awesome!
(AP) Li Fuyan, 30, had been suffering from severe headaches, bad breath and breathing difficulties but never knew the cause of his discomfort, said the senior official at the Yuxi City People's Hospital in Yunnan Province.
Li told doctors he had been stabbed in the lower right jaw by a robber four years ago and the blade broke off inside his head without anyone realizing it, said the director of the hospital's Communist Party committee's office who would only give his surname, He.
Surgeons worked cautiously to remove the badly-corroded blade without shattering it, He said. The hospital's website also reported the successful surgery.

Ann Althouse posted a link to an NYT "Opinionator" column written by Madison-native Toby Harshaw. It's worth a read LINK
It's worth it because it includes this quote from the Washington Post's Charles Lane (emphasis added):
No, what the public sector unions really canÂ’t abide is the legislationÂ’s requirement that public employees vote every year on union representation, coupled with an end to the automatic dues check-off on state paychecks. For the first time in decades, these organizations would actually have to prove on a regular basis that theyÂ’re voluntary; and they would have to collect their own political war chests, instead of relying on the government to extract the cash for them.

Compare: Shippingport, PA Nuclear Power Plant. Look at the timeline.
Quick facts: This is considered the first commercial nuclear power station in
the United States. Ground was broken in 1954 by President Dwight D Eisenhower,
who also opened the plant on 26 May 1958, as part of his "Atoms for Peace"
program. First power was on 18 Dec 1957 after 32mos of construction and the
expenditure of $72.5mn.

Since Obama's 2012 budget allocates a cool 8 billion for "green energy initiatives", I'd say 568 mill is a bargain.

I would give a precedent in American history where this (a sitting American president sending in people for the sole purpose of agitating a mob) has happened and how the population handled it, but there is none. I get the feeling more and more, that if we desire to keep our freedom, we're on our own. What we have in the WH is a totally lawless regime bent on the destruction of this country.

Well, obviously they've spent some more on the expansion and have had to maintain it. (did they have to retire the original reactor?)
John Stossel had a rant regarding nuke plants last year, inexplicably declaring the Fed government and assorted regulations not the primary stumbling block to building new ones. His air biscuit of an argument simply ended with his contention that it's impossible to acquire insurance for new plants. Which sounded stupid from word one of course, but what about it? Is the insurance thing accurate because of unlimited liability for accidents, etc?
His piece sounded dumb but I never seen much written about nuke plant insurance.

OK, I'm about to go all conspiracy theory/sudden jihad here, but what is up with the gas lines exploding over the last couple of years? I mean I know they are super dangerous, but isn't it strange that in several states there have been gas line explosions--like the one in Houston by the highway for example, or the one in CA, and I know there have been others.
How much really bad shit that is currently happening in our country isn't really an "accident" but actually the result of terrorist acts?
Whew, OK, I'll take my tinfoil hat off now.

It has those sweet faceted globe dome lights in Yellow Red and Green.

Yeah, it's busted. I have a fantasy political proposal for the Left, a kind of Grand Bargain if you will.
I would ask for a national referendum on this: given that the differences between the Left and the Right are so vast, and given that our politicians are cowardly, insatiable, mendacious vampires to the last, I would offer the Left complete control 25 US states in exchange for complete conservative control of the remaining 25 states. They may pick any 25 they wish but they will not have a single representative in the other remaining states.
This shit is getting old. This here shit is irreconcilable differences writ large.

It happens with every society and we will lose the Republic. It's just a matter of when.

Daniel Hunt of Kenosha announced that a group to recall Sen. Robert Wirch of Pleasant Prairie would file papers with the Government Accountability Board next week.
“We need to inform Robert Wirch that his hiding in Illinois is unacceptable to the voters in his district, and that we are taking the first steps to remove him from office," Hunt said in a statement.
Meanwhile, an Eagle River-based group said it expected to file with the GAB by the close of business today. The group's statement alleges Holperin "has failed to carry out his official duties in the state Senate," and committee leader Kim Simac said activists would evaluate the recall effort over the weekend.

29 Criminy you're fishing.
That wasn't news -- a U.S. veto was already a known entity; the repudiation thing was a deal floated to the Palis to get them to call off their hard on for a UN vote (which they didn't do, naturally).
I mentioned this a few days ago on the ONT when somebody (I think it was Jewells) asked. And anyone could have read the linked article at Drudge and gotten the same thing.

It's probably worse than that. Consider how much it costs to "finance" the purchase of a Volt over a less expensive car.
Consider also how long the battery pack on a Volt will last. That too will need to be replaced before you even do 100,000 miles in a Volt.
The innumerancy of the politcal nomenkaltura in this country is frankly astounding. Or maybe they're playing a deeper game. Ya think?

Prius $32,000 40 mpg around town
Volvo 850 $5700 22 mpg period
We both were involved in accidents later.
Prius hit from behind by a Honda Accord. Both total losses.
Both drivers hospitalized with some permanent injuries.
Volvo hit from behind by a Ford F150. F150 total loss. Driver broke leg and both wrists, cheekbones and nose.
Volvo, new bumper, Tail Lamp And 6 hrs to straighten fill and paint left rear quarter panel. I drove it to the body shop after the accident.

Liberals wouldn't even envision a future with vehicles.
All tight, urban living (bicycles and walking) with 'high speed rail' between cities. How about this...
You wake up in your 500 square foot apartment with an electricity meter that tells you how much electiricty you have to use today. No lights right now, you've been saving up for some television later tonight. You put on your soggy, wrinkled clothers (inefficient dryers were banned years ago) after taking a cold shower. Breakfast consists of whole wheat cereal and jicama purchased with 'food credits' after the Food Modernization Act of 2081 passed making universal access to healthy foods a Consitutional right. The taxes needed to fund the bill made most food options go out of business, but fuck Doritos, right?
You walk to work today. The government provides 'free' bicycles for use, but they are constantly broken or stolen, and it is a bother to find one at the stations. You go to your job with a mandatory '25' hour work week. Productivity is not high, but it doesn't take all that much to support a nation of people living in tiny apartments with no 'frivolous expenditures'. Most goods that were considered luxuries before like phones or Ipods are now considered environmental hazards due to electricity use and disposal problems. You 'work' for a while, but most of the day is spent in diversity training and social activities ruled by faux social scientists eargerly micro-managing all daily activities.
Work ends and you return home. You finish up the jicama from earlier in the day and begin to watch television. Your panel picks up five government stations, all heavily regulated to ensure 'fairness'. Television stations found it difficult to meet regulations and hook viewers; productive monies moved elsewhere. You sit on your sofa gazing at the light blue wall (not your choice, a famous study 32 years ago found that this color was most calming and new construction had to have light blue interior walls). You fall asleep with the faintest sound of discussion in the background concerning the environmental impact of the show you were watching.

I have an early V70, which is the *improved* 850.
It shares most parts with the 850 but is a little heavier.
And it's an AWD Turbo so it gets worse gas mileage, especially since I drive like I was fleeing persecution. Average 17-18, much higher on long trips of course.
It is a damned comfy car, despite some of the idiot engineers at Volvo (roof rack channels rain down right in the middle of driver and passenger doors, if electronic lock servos fail door cannot be opened and servo cannot easily be replaced (bolts are on the end of the door, I'm going to have to cut the damned thing out).
It seems like every high-maintenance part in the engine bay is mounted behind a low-maintenance part that has to be replaced.
BUT you can fit about 40 bodies in the back if ya stack 'em right, or a compact car if you have ramps.
