Keith Ellison Channels His Inner Krugman
— andy

Sometimes I wonder if we could do worse by replacing elections with an American Idol-like contest to find the 535 stupidest people in America and send them to congress. This is one of those times.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) tells MSNBC regulations create jobs because a business will have to hire people to help them comply with the new requirement.

"I think the answer is no," Ellison said when asked if he believes regulations kill jobs. "And here is why: When we talked about increasing fuel efficiency standards, the industry responded, and they need engineers and designers and manufacturers, and they need actually more people to help respond to the new requirement."

Got that? Government diktat causing people to be hired chasing unicorns is good for the economy. I wonder why they don't just decree full employment.

Problem. Solved.

I swear, the first week of every new Congress should be devoted to studying Bastiat's broken window fallacy. Then there should be a test.

9 Back in the heyday of the big 3 automakers, cars only lasted 100,000 miles, insuring that buyers would need a new car by the time the car loan was paid off

Then came foreign competition with cars that didn't rust on the dealer lots or need a tow back to the dealer after the first day

BTW:

The Act set specific numerical goals for the President to attain. By 1983, unemployment rates should be not more than 3% for persons aged 20 or over and not more than 4% for persons aged 16 or over,

If private enterprise appears not to be meeting these goals, the Act expressly allows the government to create a "reservoir of public employment." These jobs are required to be in the lower ranges of skill and pay to minimize competition with the private sector.

Recall that Rep. Ellison was sworn into office using a koran.  You know how he's always babbling about Jefferson owning a koran because Jefferson thought it was so great?  Not so much.  Beck got one of Jefferson's korans from TX historian David Barton and showed the intro pages of the batch TJ  had translated and printed in the United States to explain to the public the menace we were facing.

The intro explained that our brand-new navy would be fighting Barbarians from Africa who claimed that their religion ordered them to kill anyone who didn't subscribe to it.  TJ went on to call them all manner of derogatory names.  He thought the American people should understand why their new country (whose founding documents didn't provide for a standing army or navy) was going to be mired in a (most likely) 35-year seige because these savages were "relentless."  Jefferson and his compatriots were worried back then that the American people (direct quote) "Wouldn't have the stomach for a protracted war with Islam."

It's yours. Under the table of course. It'll show for me, but I'll know it's yours. You'll know it's yours. But I'm not giving that pinhead the satisfaction of respecting his boneheadedness.

204 In 1970, a Chevy Vega cost $2090 base which is about $11700 in today's Ogabe bux. (Truth is we got boned all along the way). That was pre-emission controls and 'Good Luck and God Bless' safety features. Chevy's corresponding compact today is a Cruze. MSRP is $16720 in 'eco' trim. If you bought one of each in the winter salt belt, you could expect the Vega to rust to pieces in  6-8 years with cancerous lesions showing after 3 winter seasons. That's if it wasn't already laying down more smoke than a WWI destroyer smokescreen. Truly a POS. The Cruze should last twice that long easy. There are features you don't get with the Cruze - need to replace fouled plugs frequently, need to lube chassis points frequently, need to replace points and condenser frequently, need to replace lousy engine frequently, etc, etc. And the Cruze is rated 50% better fuel efficiency. Plus 60% more HP, better handling and much better safety. So I reluctantly conclude that Ellison managed to find an example where government didn't do a bad job unlike so very, very many examples he could have cited.
I still can't stand that marxist Islamist apologist.
And he's wrong about needing more people. Cars take fewer labor hours now by far and those are as likely as not to be Mexican hours at Mexican wages.

Ok, I'll bite - how many hit points did a Vega have?

Posted by: Zombie Gary Gygax at October 10, 2011 05:13 PM (xy9wk)

206 #207 was said Vega made on a Monday or Friday? Quality was known to decline dramatically on those two days at UAW factories during that era.

Posted by: chuckR at October 10, 2011 09:11 PM (UGxsK) But I used to be able to diagnose and fix my own car. These days, I'm dependent on an idiot light and a computer I don't own or care to purchase. I suspect the market will change this though. If I simply need a new catalytic converter, OnStar should tell me this so I don't have to wonder why the check engine light is on. I miss our Vega.

Sometimes I wonder if we could do worse by replacing elections with an American Idol-like contest to find the 535 stupidest people in America and send them to congress.

216 Amen--I mean, PBUH--Billy Bob.  Queef Al Isan sees government regulation as a job-creating engine, but his black rock heart *knows* we'll have full employment only when every business has to hire muslim experts to assure strict shariah compliance.
