Killer Storms Rake the Southeast Again
— Dave in Texas

Just a couple of weeks after the last round that killed 45. Weather Channel reports 32 confirmed dead, from Texas to Alabama, and storms on the ground in Georgia.

A Mississippi police officer killed while protecting his daughter while on a camping trip, covering her body with his own. He was killed when a tree limb fell on their tent. She was not hurt.

Awful.

More: Cuffy says radio reports of 64 dead in Alabama. He's tweeting from home on a phone that's about out of power, no power at home. Hunkered down, but ok.

TVA Browns Ferry in Alabama. They tripped, went on diesel power, shut down as normally and safety systems are working as advertised.

Last I heard, 130 tornados, 58 confirmed dead, and tornados are still on the ground.  Blame La Nina.  Outbreak to rival 1974. This is historic.

12 Heard on the radio today that only 10% of the spring fieldwork on Wisconsin's farms is complete. It's been too damned cold and wet. I know my garden isn't even turned over yet, and last year by this time I had corn and beans sprouting.

Global warming, my ass.

15 I seem to have been lucky all day here in Knoxville. First Tornado warning missed off towards Oak Ridge, but UT's campus went into emergency mode. Mid-Afternoon storms grazed campus but the brunt of the tornado effects were down towards TYS airport and Maryville. I let my night class out at 7:15 after looking at the radar, and the bad storms hit downtown at that time. TV news has tons of images of large hail smashing car windows and accumulating in yards. Word is there is heavy flooding and damage on campus, which was also hit hard on Monday and lost a lot of trees. I live about 10 miles north of downtown between Powell and Halls Township, TN and I got home before it really opened up, and since then I received no hail, but a ton of lightning and rain. Flooding will be a problem. We had one radar-indicated tornado come through, in fact I just came out of the coat closet where I was hiding when I saw I was potentially in the firing line, but nothing other than heavy rain and lightning came through. So I got really lucky. Lots of damage around this area. Nothing to the degree of Alabama, but still schools damaged and closed tomorrow around East TN, as well as a lot of structural damage shown on the news. Prayers for those who lost anything and everything today.

17 I remember thinking, when I lived in St. Louis, that the buildings I lived in were so old that they couldn't possibly get hit by a tornado. Until, of course, one was.

Be smart, folks, and stay out of sight. Listen to the warnings and take them seriously. I don't want to see any morons posting photos and videos of tornadoes, okay? If you can see it, it will get you.

I was watching streaming alabama television when the tuscaloosa tornado came through on live television.  It was absolutely surreal.   Those mets have been on since this afternoon, their contribution to public safety is epic.  This one guy has been going for something like 8 solid hours and still going.

Thoughts and prayers going out to the south, no matter where you are.  Stay safe.

22 The Browns Ferry thing fits with me losing power for 15 seconds for no apparent reason earlier.

It's been an ugly evening--for those of you who haven't seen my post on the ONT, Tuscaloosa looks to have had a couple dozen killed by the monster that smashed through there.  Didn't hit the U of A though, they've opened the Student Center for shelter for students who need it.

Probably won't even know how bad it really was until morning.  Night twisters are the worst.

25 The police officer who was killed in Mississippi was a lieutenant in the Covington police department. http://tinyurl.com/5wm882t. (Covington is a suburb of New Orleans located on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain.) According to the article, Lt. Sharpe had saved 3 lives over his 19 year career (saving one by rushing into a burning building) and was awarded the Medal of Valor twice. Not surprising a man like that would give his life to save one more.

41 Ya'll check out the weather thread below.

Racefan had to go under his house a couple of times.  We haven't heard from him since.  He's in N. GA. outside Rome.  Put his gun, ammo, clothes, etc. in an Igloo cooler and went under the house while the tornado sirens were going.  Last we heard, he thought things had gotten better, then he was like, "whoops".  I'm worried we haven't heard back from him.

G-d's speed to the dead, and their families.

Here in North Texas there were fires out west until four storms in less than 24 hours took a lot of them out, but the tornados took a lot of folks out from here to MO. I had my BDU's, and field gear on three times due to tornado warnings closing in on our area. The wife was not easy to be around then.

There is a much bigger problem going on. Just this past winter, it was crazy for a lot of the country. Now, it is off the charts for a lot of the country again. This appears to have been going on one way or another for the past 15 years to me Throw in a few Hurricanes for good measure.

92 It's been raining for days if not a week now down here in Arkansas, and it seems like the tornado sirens go off every day. So far my neck of the woods (NE part of the state) hasn't been damaged too much, but other areas have it pretty bad. Most of my family lives in Alabama and I'm praying that they're making it alright.

kdabear, you got a better option, I'm listening.  I thought the Red Cross did the best job of actually getting goods and services to people in emergency situations, but maybe I'm misinformed.  Unless you're getting snippy that I didn't specify American Red Cross or something.

94 the ARC has a long history of poor efficiency when it comes to donations and how they are spent. if you want to make sure your money actually does some good, and not pay for room service, give it to the Salvation Army.

96 88 So, will the media blame Obama for this tragedy, like they blamed Bush for Katrina? Posted by: BeckoningChasm

Gee, how could they? He's never on the job, he's always on vacation...

97 90 Weird how all the weather is east of the plains states this year.

Just a latish spring. It seems more like a mid March than late April around here.  It all averages out.

99 Right in the middle of it here in western Orangeburg county .
Moderately strong winds , gusting to around 30 with strong thunder and marble sized hail .
Hoping this is as bad as it gets .
Best of luck to you morons . Watch yer' topknot .

It's kicking up here in southeastern PA right now.  Looks like my county is getting the tail end of it though.  Reading and Allentown are getting hammered.

We have had so much rain here that I haven't been able to mow my lawn.  Looks like I am a professional dandelion grower.  I've had two inches of standing water in my backyard for over a week now.  I am trying to get ready to sell my house but my yard is a disaster area.

Friend of ours has a son in grad school at Alabama.  She still hasn't reached him.  :-(
