— Ace Worth reading, but this is particularly good:
[T]the El Paso speech featured two other staples: the breathtaking invention and the statistical sleight of hand.“The [border] fence is now basically complete,” asserted the president. Complete? There are now 350 miles of pedestrian fencing along the Mexican border. The border is 1,954 miles long. That’s 18 percent. And only one-tenth of that 18 percent is the double and triple fencing that has proved so remarkably effective in, for example, the Yuma sector. Another 299 miles — 15 percent — are vehicle barriers that pedestrians can walk right through.
Obama then boasted that on his watch 31 percent more drugs have been seized, 64 percent more weapons — proof of how he has secured the border. And for more proof: Apprehension of illegal immigrants is down 40 percent. Down? Indeed, says Obama, this means that fewer people are trying to cross the border.
Interesting logic. Seizures of drugs and guns go up — proof of effective border control. Seizures of people go down — yet more proof of effective border control. Up or down, it matters not. Whatever the numbers, Obama vindicates himself.
He may be a "RINO," but that is a nice catch.
Obama insists upon himself.

“For years President Obama has said he is serious about dealing with America’s immigration issues, however, yesterday he reinforced the idea that he’s not taking the issue seriously by suggesting that the only way to make Republicans happy on the subject is to build ‘a moat with alligators,’” said Congressman Walsh.
“Time and time again, President Obama has proven that he’s more concerned with photo-ops with Hollywood movie stars, than real citizens who live on the border and have to deal with America’s exploding immigration crisis.”
“Border security is national security. It’s not a joking matter. Enforcing our immigration laws and holding businesses accountable for hiring illegal immigrants is a serious issue. For that reason, I have sent the President a letter, questioning his commitment to securing our borders.”
“I look forward to the President’s response, and hope that he would work with Congress to come up with a plan that first and foremost protects our borders. If it takes moats and alligators to secure our borders to get you to be serious – I’m game.”Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at May 14, 2011 09:06 AM (RBSIp)

This line of Krauthammer's is the kind of thing that convinces me that Angelo Codevilla's Ruling Class thesis is correct:
"I have little doubt that most Americans would be quite willing to regularize and legalize the current millions of illegal immigrants if they were convinced that this was the last such cohort, as evidenced by, say, a GAO finding that the border is under full operational control and certification to the same effect by the governors of the four southern border states."
Taking the word "most" to mean a very strong majority, I can't imagine being more out of touch with the concerns of "most" Americans than Krauthammer is here. I think "most" Americans - again, meaning a very strong majority - are opposed to any form of regularization for illegals. I think that was pretty much born out in W's attempt to screw his fellow citizens. It wasn't just the fake attempt to do something about the border, but the inherent injustice of the amnesty that got people riled up. And I think any poll would bear that out.

I agree with that and it sounds like wishcasting on Kraut's part.
It's the elites that want illegal immigration. Whether it's ideological (liberal dupes) or financial (they like their domestic servants) the elites benefit.
I do think that people would be more willing to compromise if they thought this would end it, that the border was "sealed" then there could be some sort of regularization, but why? The whole benefit to the illegals is that they're illegal. If they were legal, they'd be as expensive as the rest of the Americans.
The bottom line is that Americans don't trust the elites on immigration anymore, so anything short of building the fence and sealing the border will do nothing to change public opinion.

A Five Mile Strip along the US / Mexico Border should be dedicated to commercial / industrial usage.
Establish a target date in the short term future by which the majority of US Import / Export activities, warehouse storage and shipping occured therein. (This would remove vulnerabilities in having ports in so many large cities, and it would ensure that security was handled properly: as industry is way better at protecting itself than the government is at protecting our sovereignty.)
This would allow Private Industry to control, operate and secure the majority of the land, leaving only small points of egress for the public to travel through (left to US Border Patrol / Immigration).

Okay, in order to get products from the inland to the ports (you have to get to the ports at some point for foreign export), you'll build a rail, right? And those private companies -- they'll be able to rely on local, uncorrupt law enforcement and private security to keep all the trespassers at bay, right? And this warehousing along the Mexico border -- how is it going to be cost-effective for companies operating way out of the area that are currently using local warehouses? And who's going to make all this happen? I wouldn't want the government to do it even if it could, so it would have to be some consortium of business owners -- and I see tons of problems there.
My plan is, ICE does a dragnet along the border and in illegal-infested cities like L.A., puts them all on C-5s, and takes them to Washington D.C. Open the hatches and let them run free.

Suggestion:
You could just say that instead of whining. By this point, we've all picked over the positives and negatives of everyone from Mitt Romney to Billy Graham as a possible nominee. We get it.

That's reality...
Point taken. However, compared to The Vapid One®, she has far more experience in government that he did/does and his horrible scorecard proves it.
We do go on about her ability to get elected in this cycle. A lot of people feel the way you do about her. I have my doubts about it as well (her electability, not her qualifications).
IMHO, she will serve best in this upcoming election as a kingmaker. She did a lot for the Tea Party in 2010, and I look forward to her doing more of the same in 2012, albeit from the sidelines. Lighting rods, and all that.

The last thing we need is another GOP candidate that's gonna endorse Barack Obama, or say nice things about him "to be fair."
Jack Kemp, rest his soul, is not wanted, either. I don't know who the GOP ticket will be, probably two a-holes, but we need both the top and bottom of the ticket to be kick-ass and unapologetic.

There's this thing called the Internet. Think of it as the world's largest library and you have the key to the front door.
There is no longer any excuse for anyone to not know who they're voting for and their favorite candidate's position on anything.

"The only reason that some people are calling him a RINO is because he doesn't like Sarah Palin. Well, guess what, I don't either. I agree with her most of the time, but I DON'T want her to be President."
Not liking Palin is code for "we are the in crowd." Since we are 0 for 2 out of the Ivies, its time to pimp slap the "in crowd" with a reality show of our own. Running the country can't be that hard given that the "in-crowd" is constantly telling us the JEF is doing a great job. Its time the assholes find out that setting priorities and balancing a checkbook is not the exclusive preserve of the beautiful people but merely a simple decision making process. Kraut sees himself as the "in crowd." Being in the in-crowd is the ultimate goal of all beltwayers. The thing I like about Sarah is her ability to ignore the establishment (both Pubbie, Dem and media) and speak directly to her audience. BTW, her audience is Hillary's core support (e.g., bitter clingers). Watching her steal Hillary's base, ignore the media and win the nomination is the greatest "fuck you" story available to the electorate. Do you think America is ready to tell the establishment to go fuck itself?

We have 220 TONS of evidence that illegals are trashing our border.
I followed your link and then followed a link there to photos of all the trash as well as things left behind by OTMs (other than Mexicans) and I have to say I knew it was bad but I didnÂ’t realize exactly how bad until I flipped through those photos. We are fucked, weÂ’ve in reality already ceded large parts of the southern states to Mexico because it is too dangerous for Americans.

Massive gang wars would ensue. Mexicans do not like blacks one bit and given illegals' tendancy towards drug gangs, D.C. would probably end up like Juarez.

--I would not call Christie a RINO, but I don't want him to run because he belongs in NJ and is not fit as a national candidate. I am open to seeing change from him, but until he deals with immigration as best he can as Governor (hey, how about doing something about those sanctuary cities, Chris?) I can't take him seriously. Someone whose whole game is his fiscal ruthlessness yet does little to nothing about the illegal immigration problem is woefully inconsistent.

Also, if BATF is running guns to the Mexican gangs, shouldn't those numbers be subtracted from the number of confiscated weapons?
Oh, and thanks to the dipshits who derail the day threads before I get to them about 80% of the time. Real public service.

In my sector, we see where fencing does work (ie where a ton+ of dope or 25+ aliens can be stuffed into a vehicle and driven straight through open desert. The fencing cut down on that significantly).

The president calls for an increase in “safe and responsible” oil production domestically, “I believe that we should expand oil production in America – even as we increase safety and environmental standards.”
The President and his Administration has use obfuscation, procrastination and prevarication to slow down gas and oil production in this country. For him now to claim that he wants to "speed up" the process is just not believable.
