Krugman Keeps Gnawing on the Moderate Bone
— Dave in Texas

I'm thinkin it must be his "puffy week".

The only reasonable people in the room, Democrats, who are being more than fair even though he thinks they should stoppit already, keep negotiating with these stupid Republicans who are holding the nation hostage with their "demands" and "concerns" and massive wave of public support.

Damn them. (NYT link, no need to read, it's typically obtuse Krug)

The facts of the crisis over the debt ceiling aren’t complicated. Republicans have, in effect, taken America hostage, threatening to undermine the economy and disrupt the essential business of government unless they get policy concessions they would never have been able to enact through legislation. And Democrats — who would have been justified in rejecting this extortion altogether — have, in fact, gone a long way toward meeting those Republican demands.

The "long ways" include Presidential intransigence and petulant threats from Harry Reid about bills that are dead on arrival. This is how you go a long way toward meeting demands. By saying "hellsno" to all of them.

Incidentally, there's a buried joke in there. "concessions they would never have been able to enact through legislation". He's writing about a process we've been enduring and fussin about called "legislation". As if Republicans are trying to capture these so-called "concessions" through voodoo and mind-control.

Last time I checked, it's still legislation (ugly though it may be).

If only the Nobel committee had an award for "Whining Hyperbole".

If. Only.

3 It is time for President Obama to rise up and take unilateral action by invoking his powers in the 14th Amendment. The US does not have a debt crisis.  This "crisis" was contrived by the Taliban Tea Partiers in order to roll back New Deal protections for the people.   Basic human rights people.  This is a simple debt ceiling issue. He will stand up for the people.  He won't ask elderly, destitute, poor and people with disabilities to pay for tax breaks for billionaires like the Koch brothers.

4 Waddaya say we stop spending less of the Federal budget on interest? Having a big debt makes bankers rich, ya know.

"Crisis over the debt ceiling?"

No, you dunce. We have a spending and debt crisis, not a debt-ceiling crisis.

The long game crowd has agreed to let us slip $2.5T more into the abyss...a bet on the come on the 2012 elections.

But, already today we see Scott Brown doing what RINO's do and reminding all of us that even 51 "R's" in the Senate means nothing because lots of R's like big government.  They don't want real cuts and will have to be forced, with nuclear option threats, to cut.  And even then, they won't cut.

This is why, we must, IMO, maximize every opportunity to cut, cut, cut, and cut.  REAL FNG CUTS.

And we didn't do that.  Doom lurches closer.

HAIL MARX! probably.  After all, there isn't that much difference between National Socialism and Communism.

About the Captain America movie, I didn't mind the lack of swastikas in the movie.  But it hit me yet again that while the swastika is (rightfully) seen as a symbol of pure evil and treated with revulsion, the hammer and sickle, representing a system of government that has caused more pain and suffering than even the Third Reich, is still not afforded the same infamy as the swastika.

Posted by: MikeTheMoose

Fission bombs and nuclear reactors (as we presently operate them) release the binding energy in the nucleus of  "degenerate" matter, i.e. somewhat unstable nuclear isotopes like Uranium 235.

Fusion bombs (and the Sun and visible stars) release energy by conversion of energy to matter.

150 Relax and enjoy James Pethokoukis's Happy Time Romper Fun Korner!!! ...Check out this depressing analysis from IHS Global Insight, one of the economics firms the White House regulatory likes to cite (but maybe not today): "There is little doubt that, since the summer of 2010, U.S. growth has faltered—the only question now is how much weaker could things get and how long will the (very) “soft patch” last. His Global Insight now expects that growth in the third quarter will come in much weaker than previously expected—probably less than 2 percent and possibly less than 1 percent." There is no margin for error here. Nothing else can go wrong, such as, for instance, an EU sovereign debt crisis. Oh, wait: "Italian bond spreads have widened to new highs, while Spanish debt spreads are at the doorstep of their 2011 highs. The short-lived euphoria over last week’s expanded bailout proposal—a euphoria we did not share—appears to have worn off quickly. With weakness now bleeding into the European corporate bond market and into the core countries’ data releases, a double dip recession in the eurozone is a live possibility. We wish things were materially better on this side of the Atlantic …"– Michael Darda, MKM Partners. from his Reuters blog today

Wow. You're getting better at this, Spambot. It's kind of spooky. Nevertheless... not enough lesbianism.

Blow me G~Bob.  I'm typing while angry, and I was trying to introduce you Morons to a really cool group of young Americans to listen to.  I left the sock on by accident.  Twice.  Coz I want to reach through the screen and wring Harry Reids scrawny, corrupt, neck.

201 Jamie Dupree   CBO issues review of revised debt limit plan from Sen Reid, says it now saves $2.4 trillion over 10 years

All in defense cuts, most likely.

202 Dammit!  i can't even do punctuation while angry.  Evidently capitalization, either.

203 Posted by: K~Bob at July 29, 2011 09:14 PM (LKYhE) Calm down, fella. Your post just looked an awful lot like spam with the embedded linky. No harm intended.

204 Wow look it that the Dems killed the Boehner plan just like they said they would. Good thing that the GOP pushed to pass it. Now they have all kinds of leverage.

I think you've cornfused History with Destiny. History was the chatty, nagging bitch, always changing her story.

Destiny is the flirty tease that is trying to steal your wallet.

209 I for one am looking forward to the commission of 12 or whatever.  6 over the top mercedes marxists, and 6 Massachusetts republicans.  To 'do' something about spending.  whatever that means.

Jolly good show there repukes!  Yay!  I'm so glad the boner bill passed

Who will go on tv (nobody so far.. which shocks the shit out of me) and tell everyone that unless a balanced budget amendment was passed, we'd have near 30,000 billion in debt in 10 years at this rate?

Trillion needs to be eliminated from vocabulary.  I don't think the drones think it means what it means.  30,000 billion.  This bill cuts 1 billion this year from the deficit.  the deficit isn't the debt.

get. the. picture. demtards?

Hello here we come detroit-america!! woohooo!!!

211 Sorry, George.

It's not you, it's me.

I want Republican senators flaying these bastards on TV for a change.

I'm also stuck in a place where I can't turn off  MSNBC and I'm getting really angry.

As soon as my phone is charged, I'm gonna listen to those kids again, reeel loud.

212 I almost don't care anymore if the debt ceiling gets raised. The House GOP has done what it can. If Reid comes up with a reasonable offer (big spending cuts and no tax increases), the House should pass it. But if their proposal isn't reasonable? Fuck it. When the economy implodes, Obama's poll numbers will be in the 30s and at that point Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin could win the general election.

213 Incidentally, anyone else notice that whenever O'Reilly decides to take a three-day weekend, there is major news to be reported?

The debt raise was baked in the cake. It's the bill for all of the spending previous Congress' have done. Past tense. Imagine you're hired to clean up a company in debt. Can you automatically throw out the bills?

If Reid comes up with a reasonable offer (big spending cuts and no tax increases), the House should pass it. But if their proposal isn't reasonable? Fuck it.

Not a chance in hell Reid's proposal will be acceptable to anyone here, but, the Right being the responsible party, they will pass something and kick the can.

When the economy implodes, Obama's poll numbers will be in the 30s and at that point Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin could win the general election.

The left is gaming that the fallout would primarily damage the right. And they are probably right. The question is are you willing to risk it? And if you are, how confident are you in the nature of the voting public?

218 Krugman: "The facts of the crisis over the debt ceiling aren't complicated. Republicans have, in effect, taken America hostage..."

What?! No "gun to the head" talk? Just "hostage"? This new tone sucks. I thought if you wanted mega-violent imagery, you could keep your mega-violent imagery. This is mere B+ rated imagery.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at July 29, 2011 06:46 PM (r4t7/)

219 This Krugman fellow sounds like a real stand-up guy.  The way he identifies the Republicans as "hostage takers" is quite unique.  I hadn't heard that description before.  Very effective.  Bordering on focus-group-tested.

You know, when someone calls me a "hostage-taking terrorist" before trying to sell me a used car, I tell them to shove that car up their ass.  But that's just me.

221 "Republicans have, in effect, taken America hostage, threatening to undermine the economy and disrupt the essential business of government unless they get policy concessions they would never have been able to enact through legislation." --Krugman Clearly this is the Dem attack strategy: "Republicans have taken America hostage!!" Expect to see the MSM echoing exactly this phrase non-stop for the next week. For Krugman and the Dems, any lie that keeps them in power is peachy.
