Last Stand For Tim Pawlenty In Iowa?
— Ace

It's odd but just as the race is beginning it's sort of near the end.

Will Tim Pawlenty do well enough in Iowa to attract more support? Can he accomplish that with a second place finish? Or a third? (Count on Ron Paul to finish near the top, of course.)

“The problem Tim Pawlenty has is he’s doing everything right,” said Iowa strategist Steve Grubbs, a former Iowa GOP chairman and state legislator. “He has the right team in place. He’s spending the money. He’s got a good grass-roots strategy, and they’re investing the time in the state. So it’s going to be difficult to say they didn’t make a strong effort.”

...

Pawlenty and his supporters have worked hard to keep expectations low for the event, with the candidate clinging to the role of underdog despite all the evidence that he has a clear shot at victory...

Conant said predictions that Pawlenty needs a first- or second-place finish were off the mark: “If the people ahead of us are not viewed as likely or credible nominees, that’s less of a hurdle. I think these things are very hard to predict.”

Iowa caucus veterans say the calculus for Pawlenty is both simpler and harsher: Anything short of a flat-out win will make it exceedingly difficult for him to claim momentum in the rapidly accelerating 2012 primary race.

As some might know I was a Pawlenty supporter, but not enough people joined me. The party seems to be on a No Experience Required kick.

On the other hand, Bachmann is admirably forthright:

When Bachmann gives a brief speech to the approximately 100 employees assembled, she talks about what she wants for them, and for all employees in America: higher wages and better benefits. She paints a picture of how promoting free-trade agreements, axing regulations, and cutting the corporate tax rate could help bring those goals about....

Asked about entitlement reform, Bachmann says we must be “crystal clear” that no plan will impact current retireees’ Social Security and Medicare...

“But what I think we all recognize is the current system is flat broke,” Bachmann continued. Then, without ever using the word “voucher,” she started to talk about how great it would be if senior citizens could choose their health-care plan, and not be forced to join Medicare. “I want to let every American choose,” Bachmann says.

Well, that is definitely forward-leaning on a politically tough subject.

9 Iowa is a must for T-Paw because his polling has been so low for so long. If the polls reflect how Iowa will go Bachmann has it. Romney has NH and SC is a tossup depending on what Perry does and who Haley endorses.

If T-Paw doesn't do well in Iowa he is finished.

12 T-Paw seems like the man, too bad he is catching on. As for the slam aimed at Bachman, the little vignette that instapud linked to yesterday was nice. She laid out true con values, and I wonder if we can get her "the mother of all repeal bills" to be the ground floor of expectation for GOP candidates. It eased some of my concerns for her. Hey, as Hitchens said about W (Hitch being in asshole mode, natch) was that W proved that anybody could govern the US (remember that, before Obama made it clear that the US was "ungovernable"), so long as they had certain ideals. Bach seems to stand firm.

I dunno. Last election had Huck in the lead in Iowa and McCain in third, IIRC.

Now what will be hilarious is if Perry wins the straw poll as a write in vote.

24 It's a fine line between bending like a willow to withstand the storm and being tough and hard as an oak and be relied upon. I think BECAUSE he did everything so well, it seemed like a poor man's Romney campaign. Well orchestrated, hardly anything out of place, yet boring and suspicious at the same time. I'm not sold on Bachmann either. I think she's says too much that she really doesn't feel in her gut. But it's early yet. Another thing is name recognition and electability. Things which I don't think tpaw had enough of. My rankings are 1) Perry 2) Bachmann 3) (waiting for Godot Sarah)

28 As some might know I was a Pawlenty supporter, but not enough people joined me. The party seems to be on a No Experience Required kick

Well, I'm not sure you can chalk it up to that.  (Obviously there are some folks with limited amt of the "right" experience who are or were popular, but that's not the whole story.)  Perry is attracting many of us because he does have the resume (with results), in addition to have the "it" factor.

Pawlenty never caught on with me for a couple of reasons. One, I'm biased against Minnesota.  I consider it to be a blue state and the "conservative" I "know" from there (Morrissey) is a squish.  So I don't say to myself, "Hey, let's model the country after Minnesota!"  That's a pretty shallow reason, but there it is.  Pawlenty never sold his record to me; not enough to overcome that bias.

More importantly, I have grown to really dislike Pawlenty on a personal level.  He seems to be a back-biting weasel.  I don't like what I've seen in the primary and I don't believe he would campaign well against Obama.

Now I'll say one thing for him.  He issued a very careful (nice) statement about Perry entering the race.  So I guess he's trying for the VP slot.  Thing is, I'm not sure he's distinguished himself enough to be VP.  I suppose he could be an option if the MSM gains traction on Perry the SoCon meme, but otherwise I don't see what Pawlenty brings.

34 I think T-Paw was poised to get his own Cain-like boomlet but he conspicuously avoided criticizing Romney to his face, which reinforces his perceived main weakness.

I actually don't expect Paul to do that well.

Bachmann's support seems soft to me, given the eagerness for Perry.

Here's the dynamic, Ace: Romney is the frontrunner and he has the experience thing going.  Right now, people are looking for the non-Romney.  Bachmann fits the bill right now for someone with the will to defeat Romney let alone Obama.

Moreover, everything Pawlenty is, Perry is even more and with charisma.

Still, if Pawlenty beats Bachmann in Ames, he jumps to the top 3.

Therein lies the problem. He's doing "everything right" according to the analysts and consultants. If you're trying hard, doing everything right and still stuck in the back, you're just not going to get the girl.

He's uninspiring, and he tends to wither under heavy fire. In a gunfight he brings a tray of smores

I think that's an unfair simplification. Lot's of folks like Perry, he's got oodles of experience. Lot's of folks like Romney (not here of course) he's got oodles of experience. I think Pawlenty suffers because he's not sufficiently !Romney for the !Romney contingent. MB is, Perry is. I roast all of my whole chickens and lg red meat roasts in a cast Iron skillet under convection.  I brown / sear on the Stovetop and them slam it into the oven to roast, turning at least once...usually I turn birds (over) twice.

From Bloomberg: "President Barack Obama will vacation with his family in Martha's Vineyard at the end of this month as he's done in years past, the White House said Wednesday, despite the weak economy and negotiations on the nation's debt problem. Press secretary Jay Carney defended Obama's plans to take a break even as he's pledged urgent action on those issues. "I don't think Americans out there would begrudge that notion that the president would spend some time with his family," Carney said."

Turkey and pork are my two go-to cheap meats right now.

I'm down to my last 5-10 lbs of Venison and Antelope.

No more chickens of the woods or T-bone of the sky left.

September can't come soon enough!

As some might know I was a Pawlenty supporter, but not enough people joined me. The party seems to be on a No Experience Required kick.

I think its more that he did well in the first debate but on the second one when asked about his statements regarding Romney he backed off.  And even if you could say the question was loaded its not really going to impress people if you criticize someone on the campaign but won't when they are right next to you.

People do want some fight and want to know you won't back down, and I think that really hurt him the sense that it plateaued his support.

Oh Sweet Fancy Moses, the guy's family lives upstairs, it's the ultimate work from home job.

Except for a few parties with the Vin-yid royalty with the wife and a few photo op ice cream trips with the girls, he'll be golfing as usual.

With few exceptions (I'm looking at you, Corey Feldman and Zombie Corey Haim), most of the kids I blew weren't high.  Drunk on Jesus Juice, maybe, but not high.

I am not so sure it's anything specific.

I've never seen him poll better than like 8% in 4th place.

There is no there there. He is like a much more successful (but still not successful) Huntsman.

Had a plenty spiffy campaign but never really had any voters to justify the media attention.

Buzzion and Entropy are both correct - he had tepid support to begin with and then he tucked tail and waffled after taking a swipe at Mitt - which I for one took as a preview of how he'd "handle" Teh One - with McCainish praise and platitudes.

I don't think we're on a no experience kick, I think that our experienced candidates are too damned afraid to call out Obama on his bullshit openly and frankly without tons of apologetic sugar-coating.

I'm not looking for a firebreathing pundit masquerading as a candidate, but I'd like to see someone with Rand or Cristie's forthrightness in terms of calling bullshit bullshit rather than ice cream.

Well that's sort of what I was getting at with my last sentence about his support plateauing.  He did well in the first debate and a lot were hoping to see that continue but in the second debate he shrank around the top tier.  So most people that were thinking "hmmmm" went "Nope! Next please!"

Posted by: buzzion at August 10, 2011 12:59 PM (GULKT)

What is crystal clear from that statement, is that you're not serious about actually solving the problem.  Please fuck off.

Posted by: Terry at August 10, 2011 01:25 PM (W1mrP)

107 I don't think it's a 'no experience required' kick so much as a desperation to get some leadership that might actually do something in time to prevent a true disaster.

I like T Paw, and would be pleased if we could replace Obama with him, but I want the most conservative candidate who can win.  I want someone who knows when to punch and when not to punch.

Bachmann's success, in my opinion, is a vote of no confidence in other candidates.  Same with Palin.  People have lost faith, and supporting a perceived outsider is their way of saying so.  I find this to be unwise.  Without more experience, it's hard to really know how someone will govern.

But some will choose a question mark over someone they do know about and reject.

Rick Perry is my best solution to these problems.  I am very surprised to find myself supporting him, but the facts are what they are.

Posted by: Dustin at August 10, 2011 01:35 PM (519+h)

108 So Bachmann is another "free trader," huh?  NAFTA, Mexican truckers, cheap Chinese manufactured goods and stuff like that?

Yeah, that will create jobs.  Sure.  It's worked so well since 1996, hasn't it?

Let me understand this.  Ace supports someone who is in favor of:

amnesty

carbon tax

gay marriage

further federal regulkations

Maybe I am missing something but why bother voting for Pawlenty when you can vote for Obama.

The problem with Pawlenty isn't that the GOP is on a "no experience required kick" (what's up with that, Ace...are you trying to outdo Obama in the condescension department?).  Pawlenty's problem is that he is dull as ditchwater, and he doesn't seem to have a case for why he should be the GOP nominee instead of, say, Romney, Bachman, or any of the other midgets in the field.

But take heart - Perry is about to get in, and he has experience out the wazoo...even more than Pawlenty.  And he's not contemptible say-anything-to-get-elected establishment squish like Romney.  For that matter, he's not a flake like Palin or Bachman, either.
