NBC “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon joked about an interview in which Mr. Perry “criticized Mitt Romney for flip-flopping on the issues.” In response, “Romney said that Perry has no idea what he’s talking about. Then he added, ‘But he does know what he’s talking about.’ “
And from the Funny Because It's True department:
“How about I start tonight with good news,” offered TBS host Conan O'Brien in a recent monologue. “KFC has just introduced the new Cheesy Bacon Bowl, which is filled with mashed potatoes, cheese, gravy, chicken and bacon.” The Cheesy Bacon Bowl, he went on, is “now the Republican front-runner for President.”

Yes, he should. I don't really care about Paterno's legal liability, but he had a clear moral obligation to report when he first learned of this issue.
What really concerns me is what did Paterno know and when did he know it. I read somewhere earlier that rumors about the assistant had been around since at least 1994.

So if he was employed at the university, he should have reported it? Because Sandusky had keys to the facilities and an office on campus. He was essentially treated the way emeritus professors are treated - they, too, retain campus privileges and offices.
The grad assistant, whom I assume was still relatively young (early 20s) saw something shocking by someone who retained an air of authority on campus in the athletics program (Sandusky) and reported it to his boss, Paterno. Unless the grad assistant left out the anal sex and sugar-coated it to "horse play," I don't see why Paterno did not call the police at that point, particularly given that this was the second incident at the PSU showers (the first two years earlier witnessed by a janitor).
The kid/grad assistant was in shock, so I can understand how he might not know better (although his father should have), but Paterno should have followed up. He was Sandusky former boss and obviously gave the blessings for Sandusky to have access to the facilities.
When PSU's response was to no longer allow Sandusky to bring boys to campus, Joe Pa should have realized there was fire under that smoke and followed up.

When my oldest was in High School, I was a counselor for the parish Youth Group. The only thing I HAD to report to the authorities was any mention of abuse from any of the kids. Failure to do so would have put me at risk for prosecution, depending on the severity of the abuse.

This wasn't an HR matter. It was an alleged felony. I realize it is serious, but what happened in this case is that a student witnessed a PSU authority figure commit a crime and the folks he spoke with at PSU told him "we'll take care of it" rather than encouraging him to call the police.
Now maybe that student should have called the police right away, and certainly his dad should have had the presence of mind to do so, but that does not excuse the other folks in authority at PSU from doing so. When Paterno saw that PSU was taking action against Sandusky (barring him from bringing kids) he should have followed up or encouraged the student to do so. Don't forget, this was not the first incident involving Sandusky in the football facilities.
Universities are still under the jurisdiction of their states and this was at a state university, so that goes double.

Not that you don't raise a good point. Perry's first impression with many folks was not a very good one. I really resent the way we handle debates, but Perry could have introduced himself on Sunday talk shows and other interviews, formats he's a lot better at than the 30 second pander game. I don't know if that would have helped.

I guess that's smart. Makes a lot of sense, but it's sad. We all know any responsible leader would look at what our entitlement liabilities are and demand they be fundamentally overhauled. It's not even an option. Either we fix them or they go away due to collapse.
The same issue would have plagued my man Mitch Daniels, whom I suspect would also be faring very, very badly in the polls had he run because he had many of the same ideals and was also not really a show stopper in the debates (many would be complaining he's too bland).
I will be patient about it, but would we really let Romney be our nominee just because of these artificial debates? I know most commenters here wouldn't, but as a political party?
I think it's like one guy said above: people are so scared of Obama they are flinching and picking a centrist with no values because of the perception that compromise will lead to more general election success.

RE: the Joe Paterno debate. I honestly haven't read any of the details, but I have to ask -- how does JP's age factor into this? The man isn't exactly a spring chicken, and he hasn't been one for a long time. Is it possible that he just forgot to follow-up when he saw nothing was being done? Again, I haven't read the details so I don't know the specifics of the case in question.
But I've been for JP's retirement for a long time. He's mostly a figurehead now. It's time for him to move on with his life.

Naw, I'm fairly happy if anyone but Romney is nominated, and I happily agree to the real flaws Perry has. There's nothing cult-like about my support for him.
I don't see Perry's fans as particularly cult like. I've seem several Romney fans act very cultish, and maybe a very small minority of Cain fans, but Perry and Newt fans are largely realists who just want the country to be better.
The reason I can't 'break loose' is because there is no candidate with nearly the record of actual leadership experience Perry has, nor is there a candidate with nearly the record of actually being a conservative the vast majority of the time. All it would take for me to 'break loose' is a better competitor.
If Newt is that guy, I can deal with that. He's presidential and intelligent, though his record is mixed. He could do the job.Romney is obviously unacceptable to a conservative, given his dishonest nature and his extreme liberal record on health care mandates, free health care for illegals, "strong" gun control, and taxing/spending (often forgiven with bizarre excuses by the aforementioned cult).
I do not think Cain is sufficiently prepared for the job, in many ways. No diss to him and his, but it's a very challenging job and we live in serious times.
Perry's record is sufficiently superior to the other candidates that I will stick with him and try to ride out the turbulence. You gotta get back in that saddle a few times and keep trying.

I love Joe Paterno and respect him as one of the few NCAAF coaches who actually still disciplines his players. But, he's gone to seed.
And if you haven't read the specifics, don't unless you have a strong stomach. I read the PA Atty General's statement on the charges against Sandusky (and the two PSU staffers - the Athletics Director and the SVP for Finance) and it turned my stomach. But suffice it to say that there were at least two graphic sex acts performed on pre-pubescent boys in the PSU locker room reported to PSU officials. The 23-page grand jury report is available on the web, but I don't have the guts to read it.

I think he's got a likely point there. Romney's commentary about abolishing social security unless Romney is nominated was pervasive and strong, and Romney hasn't exactly backed off. He just has added on a very vague 'reform' while playing things Obama's way (trying to phrase things so that both sides think he's talking to them).
Some people will be stupid enough to think Perry is going to abolish their goodies, and vote Romney. Perhaps Perry should have been smart enough to stay silent on the entitlement disaster we're facing, but some of these comments go way back, and they are pretty reasonable.
For all the carping about whether it's literally, perfectly, a dictionary definition Ponzi scheme, the underlying fact is that Social Security is taking future wealth, and not a small amount, to pay boomers today, and the math makes it impossible to sustain.
The real problem here is that Romney did not suffer very much, if at all, for demagoguery against honesty about this problem. He also didn't suffer much for promising .5 trillion in more entitlement spending than Obama wants, if Romney is elected (link in my name below).
It really does seem as though these two men belong in different political parties, but ultimately, I guess what really interests me about this is that we are currently being asked to define what the GOP is all about.
Is the GOP more like Perry, or more like Romney? That's what this election is about. Slick and dishonest and ineffective? Or simpler, more effective, reforms, with no apologies to the shameless.

My husband has been in mid- to high-level higher ed administration for two decades, including in areas of compliance and at the cabinet level. When I read to him how PSU handled these cases of reported sexual assaults of minors on their campus, he was stunned. The institutions where he's served, which includes another Big 10 and a state university here, would never be so cavalier about incidents like the ones described.
There is no motivation for a grad assistant in the athletics program to make up a charge against Sandusky or for a janitor to do so two years earlier.

Let's see if there is any substance to these claims. So far Cain is accused of an unknown harassment by unknown people. If this is another "he called me Sugar" type of complaint I think a lot of bloggers need to think about apologizing for hammering Cain on this issue.
My thoughts exactly. Politico had 90 stories in 5 days but not one of them gave any details of exactly what Cain did. Like Rush said, when conservatives report sexual harassment committed by Democrats, they give names: Juanita Broderick, Kathleen Willey, Monica Lewinski and they provide details. There's no nameless victims and vague accusations.
