Late Summer Wildfires Raging in Central Texas
— Dave in Texas

Damn. This got bad and it got bad fast.

Five fires around the Austin area, none of them are contained right now. 350 homes destroyed in an afternoon, and thousands of people evacuated.

Most of Texas is dry as a tinderbox right now, and yesterday the winds were blowing 40 to 45. Worst possible conditions. My youngest kid drove past one yesterday on her way home for a visit, that highway is completely shut down now.

There is no rain in the forecast, but the winds aren't as bad today. There are a lot of tired firefighters working hard today, trying to get this stuff under control.

Bastrop area fire 9-4.jpg

Also, ain't lettin my kid go back home this afternoon. That's the deal.

1 Many out-of-control fires are caused by lousy policy -- not letting the small fires burn the undergrowth. Is there a man-made cause here?

4 On the way home from watching Cowboys & Aliens last night, I noticed big giant clouds of smoke over the local mountains. Naturally, I assumed that there had been a thunderstorm over there.

Found out this morning that the fire was started by a small plane crash.

6 Wildfires in Texas are the result of Rick Perry kowtowing to Tea Party extremists.  If Perry is elected president, his policies would incinerate all of America.

CBD, not in this case.  It's been 100+ degrees all damned summer, and no rain.  Even open land that's properly managed will spark under those conditions.  Most of it is open farmland and cattle-land, that gets taken care of to be productive.

It's just lousy goddamn weather and timing.

9 Best hopes for the safety of all my Texas friends.

We shall see if the feds every cough up any disaster aid to a red state.

If not, Perry should slap Obama with that, on TV, every day, until everybody understands what petty, inhumane partisan douches are infesting office right now.

They would literally provide more aid to a foreign country that hates our guts, than support their own citizens who happen to live in a red state.

18 Gov. Perry's job creation policies have allowed the Texas economy to become superheated, causing spontaneous wildfires across the state.  Most economists agree that applying the same policies to the entire country would result in an unprecedented catastrophe for America.

Now they have no grass, no water, since the stock tanks are dried up with the heat, and 150 head of horses and cattle to provide for. And they are one of hundreds, maybe thousands of small ranchers who are in desperate situations. They don't want a bail out, they just want some rain. Mercy, it seems like something evil is out to get Texas.

It's like there has been a media blackout of the ongoing disaster of drought and fires in Texas....Even Fox has made only slight mention of it.

How many millions of acres have been burned in Texas now?

But whenever a couple thousand burn in California its a big deal. Not that I am criticizing California for getting the coverage.......only the media's decision to not give the same attention to Texas.

My heart goes out to the folks in Texas. I hope you get some measurable rain soon.

Well, since the fires aren't burning down south congress, the dirty hippies don't really care. These fires are out in Bastrop, which is considered rural and fairly conservative and over at Steiner Ranch, which is the country club set. Upwardly mobile, let's say. Again, not particularly liberal.

A friend of ours is out at Steiner Ranch. The fires came within a quarter mile of home last night. He's been evacuated and hasn't been allowed back in. Hopefully, his house is still standing.

Why didnt Perry skip his choreographed town hall in SC today as well?

He's skipping out, plain and simple, and he'll probably hide behind the fires to skip the Reagan Library debate as well.

I'm not a fan of these debates actually, but if the Ol' Cowpoke didnt want to do them, he should have held off on getting in a while longer.

Attuned voters will take notice.  Yes, yes, we know--its his duty to TX and all, just like he was only trying to save the pure young girls of Texas from dirty Mexican STDs.

But if he skips out on the Reagan deal, voters arent going to attribute it to Rick's sterling sense of duty, but to bein' skeered.

109 Texas has a fire plan. We even have the State Guard (not the same as the National Guard) cross-trained for wildfire suppression. And we aren't California -- we don't let fuel sit around and turn into tinder just because it is "pretty." The reality is that we're a much bigger state, with much more wildfire susceptible land. STFU.   He's doing exactly what any responsible goveror that gives a shit about his state would do.

Jeesh, I don't know who you're pulling for, but they would do better not to have you in their corner.

And, no I'm not in Perry's corner as far as the primary is concerned, but you're just fucking stupid.

208 Steiner Ranch, which is the country club set. Upwardly mobile, let's say. Again, not particularly liberal.

I live near by and have friends there.  I've seen loads of Obama bumper stickers adorn the Vulvas, Escalades and Subarus in that neighborhood.  Upwardly mobile, and ironically at least a 1/3 support the Stuttering Clusterfuck of a Miserable Failure.

Have you watched the videos, read the the wildfire reports?  A big chunk of Central Texas is on fire.  On. Fire.  If it's all the same to you, I'd very much like to have my Governor here seeing to the making of resources available to our neighbors and responders, rather than jawboning in SC.

How can SP not know what has been going on with her internet operatives......she hired an expert internet blogger type person some time back. So SP bears some responsibility for the flaming blog wars that have been going on, imo.

234 So yesterday some fool thought he'd grill in 20+ mph winds in a park next to Canyon Lake.  Started a fire that we could see two ridgelines over.  Put the bug out materials next to the door and got ready to run if necessary.  The wind was so strong that the ash and cinders reaching us were blown out, so we didn't catch fire, which could have happened so very easily.

FD got it under control and let it burn down to the water, but kept it far from the marina, which was the only significant structure on that part of the lake.

We listened on the scanner; those firemen are utterly exhausted, but went to Bastrop this morning to help.  The FD station half a mile from our house never, ever has its brush fire truck parked there - they're always out.

We'll continue on fire watch here for the forseeable future.

235 Crap, we smell smoke again.

236 I've been following this on Facebook since yesterday. Patti Patton Bader, the founder of the largest troop support organization, lives in Bastrop. They stayed as long as they could, but she, her hubby, and their pets had to leave last evening. Last they knew, the fire was within a mile of their home. This is scary bad. The winds are really high, and it is so terribly dry. In my little city alone, we had 13 fires this weekend. Winds are knocking power lines loose and falling onto houses or onto the dry vegetation. It's bad.

Posted by: WarmMountain at September 05, 2011 12:15 PM (WiL57)

237 You can actually see the smoke from the fire on visible cloud satellite imagery. That's a big fire.

239 My brother lives at ground zero of the Bastrop fire, and he and his family had 10 minutes to evacuate. He could see 30 foot flames heading towards them, so he is sure his house is gone.

My parents live right exactly on the northern "dotted line" of the fire map -- the fire started near them, but blew mostly south, so their house (and their ducks!) might be OK.  They have no idea what they'll find, but they just called to say they'd be allowed to do a drive-by to check on their property tomorrow afternoon.  Fingers and toes crossed.

A beautiful area of the country got real ugly in just a couple days.  Awful.

Posted by: Sterling Archer at September 05, 2011 04:56 PM (1H47k)

240 Dad had to drive about half a mile through the flames to evac he and Mom.  He said it was unreal.  Everything on both sides of 21 burning higher than the tallest pine trees.  All the grass on the median was burning.  Even the little stumpy poles that hold up the guard rails were burning like briquettes all the way down the highway.  I asked him if he got any pictures and he almost punched me through the phone.  He was spooked, and nothing scares him.

Posted by: Sterling Archer at September 05, 2011 05:05 PM (1H47k)

241 Been right lively round here the last few hours. Fire two properties over; we were within five minutes of a bug out. Fire's out, but we're leaving vehicles in "scat" position until tomorrow. This fire started in a burn pile.  Someone has a lot of 'splainin' to do to the local authorities.Bastrop fire is sending lots of smoke and ash our way. No sleeping with open windows tonight, and it would be perfect weather for that, lows in the 50s.
