— DrewM Katrina vanden Heuvel says, they are from the government and they are here to help so shut up and back off.
Two thousand and eleven has been one of the toughest years for public workers that I can remember. Every month until this past one, the private sector has added jobs, and every month the public sector has lost them. The August employment report shows that the public sector got hit hard again — losing 17,000 jobs. In states across the country, public workers aren’t just being laid off; they’re being made into economic scapegoats. These workers deserve to be treated fairly any time. But in the wake of Hurricane Irene, as we watched teams of federal, state and local government workers tirelessly saving lives, and on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, they deserve much better. The last decade has been marked by both peril and possibility, and in all of it there has been no shortage of American heroes. Many, if not the vast majority, worked for the government — as firefighters and police, as teachers and rescue workers. In the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, men and women proudly wore hats and shirts labeled “FDNY” and “NYPD.” When we wept for our nation, it was the bravery of the first responders that reminded us of our national character. There was a newfound respect for public service and a heartening change in how Americans viewed their government. Fire and police departments, and organizations such as the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, saw a surge in applicants. We didn’t just want to believe in those workers. We wanted to be them.
...
Government isnÂ’t just about first responders, of course. When our public school teachers are constantly asked to do more with less, when they work to prepare the next generation for an uncertain economic future, they deserve our deepest gratitude. When regulators prevent corporations from spilling chemicals and oil and waste into our rivers and oceans, we should sing their praises. When bureaucrats at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau stand up to the big banks, we should stand alongside them.
I'm glad she got around to mentioning that not all (or even remotely most) government workers are courageous first responders but that came much later in the column. She also ignores that plenty of places around the country are served by volunteer fire and ambulance crews but liberals don't do details. It's an old trick to pretend that your average government employee is out there facing dangers day in and day out facing down danger to better serve you. The reality is quite different.
Would the Republic survive if we cut back on the 112,000 employees at DoJ, 71,00 at Interior, 109,000 at Agriculture or 109,00 at Energy? Hell, I bet we can find more than a few non-essential spots in the over 700,000 civilians working at the DoD. I'm guessing we'd be ok. I'm really confident because we've expanded the federal workforce by 12% under Obama. I think the world would go around just fine without them.
At the state and local level we need teachers, garbage men and a whole host of other jobs that do provide necessary services (or course we might want to try privatizing some of them) but we could do without hordes of desk bound bureaucrats.
Democrats have argued that one of the reason unemployment is staying at current levels is because public employees are being laid off as stimulus funds run out. Well, that's a good thing. You can't expect the federal government to keep borrowing money to protect states from their out of control spending. If a state can't afford it's workforce then it should cut back or unions should be willing to talk about wage and benefit cutbacks. This is all old hat to the private sector, there's simply no reason that productive sector of the economy should be burdened with keeping the unproductive sector fat and happy. Figure out what essential government services are and start slashing the hell out of the rest.
Here's a tip on where to look...when the weather gets bad and they give "non-essential personnel" the day off, start with those who get to stay home. If you can't cut 10-20% of those people, you aren't trying.
If public workers can't stand the stigma of working for the government, they are free to get a job in the private sector (if they can find one). Short of that, they need to stop whining and say thank you every time they deal with an actual taxpayer.

Yes...imagine. A school. In the private sector. What would such a thing look like?
Maybe we should ask Barack Obama because I think the only time he has ever set foot in a public school was to do a photo op.

Complain about socialism? They will quickly trot out their list: Oh you don't like socialism? What about Police? Firemen? Teachers? All social programs.. Then they contend Tea Party types (only they call them teabaggers, of course) want to do away with all the above jobs!
I like to point out to them, that when Chicago furloughed whole departments for days at a time and shut down their offices, no one seemed to even notice! You could easily get rid of 1/3 of all fed desk jockeys, and you would not notice a difference.
I'm getting real tired of these assholes.

Unions add to the cost of everything that we have to buy.......Union demands are one of the biggest reasons why manufacturing jobs have left the country.
Union members elect their leaders, don't they?
To slam 'union bosses' without addressing the basic selfish premiss behind the unions themselves.......is a copout.
Collective bargaining is not a right.....Palin is not saying that, is she? No. She is not. She is not speaking out in favor of 'right to work' either....which is a basic conservative principle.

Useless paper pushing bureaucrats who think big thoughts about how they should save America by forcing job-killing regulations down our throats.

I didnÂ’t have the Labor Day
I hoped that it would be:
I first was called barbarian,
And then an SOB.
And what, you ask, may I have done
To cause such repartee?
I registered Republican,
And voted GOP.
I scoffed at Mr. Harry Reid,
And wrote a little verse
That mocked Ms. Debbie Wasserman,
Which makes me even worse.
So far IÂ’ve done my level best
To add a bit of flair
To all my bits of poetry,
And every rhyming pair.
And is it far too much to ask
That they should do the same?
To find a clever turn of phrase
With which they might take aim?
I wish theyÂ’d coin an epithet
A little more adroit,
But one is our Vice President –
The otherÂ’s from Detroit.

Exactly. I have the great blessing of occasionally dealing with Medicare in an attempt to repay liens. Note that I am trying to give Medicare money. It is unbelievable what it takes to get Medicare to answer the question "how much money do I have to give you?" I finally lost it a few years ago and screamed at someone "I pay you! You work for me! I am trying to give you money!" Yeah, that was accepted well. Whenever I think of government workers, I think of those with Medicare who cannot be arsed to assist me in telling me how much money I need to pay back to the government.
I loathe the whole bit about pretending all government workers are the cops and firefighters. No. They are the DMV and the clerks at the zoning office.

Actually about 90% of the people who work in my position are rather rabidly anti-union. We're unfortunately lumped into the catch-all public employee union, alongside the army of social "workers". We can't leave the union unless the union votes to allow us to. Seeing as how we're outnumbered by social workers by a scale of about 20 to 1, we're screwed.
I do however make sure everyone in my office gets the form to request political contributions back. Even the fat shit, lazy ass, union steward takes advantage of that one.

Palin has been holding herself up as a 'Judge' of "true conservative principles".
Being pro-union is not a "true conservative principle", since unions add layers of cost to what consumers must pay for goods and services.
Unions are anti-capitalism, anti-free market. Period.
And goverment unions are against 'we the taxpayers'.....There should be no government unions. They have power over us and a monopoly on their revenue source = our tax dollars. Which are taken from us by force. We are not free to simply take our tax dollars and go purchase a service that is better.

Trust me, I've been trying. I've had interviews, but no bites. *sigh*
Short of that, they need to stop whining and say thank you every time they deal with an actual taxpayer.
I don't whine, and I wake up every morning and say, out loud, "I'm grateful to still have a job." How long that will last is always in doubt.

I'm technically a public employee, and while I never joined the union, I pay dues to it (roughly $300 a year; if I pay $6 more a year, I can become a full-fledged member! But, I'll just by a six-pack of beer and pretend that it's compliments of the union). I was told when I joined that it was voted on that non-union members are to pay union dues. Voted on by whom? Those in the union? Those not in the union? Both?
Doesn't make much sense to me that you can just have a vote to tell non-union members that they have to start paying union dues.

Yeah. The overpaid fat-assed bureaucrats who exist to give my money away to people who just don't much feel like working really deserve my undying respect. Because of their 9/11 heroics, of course.
When our public school teachers are constantly asked to do more with less, when they work to prepare the next generation for an uncertain economic future, they deserve our deepest gratitude
Fuck off. I'm so tired of this attitude. Teachers aren't heroes. They work a job just like anyone else. Some of them are fantastic and some of them are lazy, incompetent fucks.
You want to know who has my gratitude? Oil industry workers. Every day when I climb into my car and drive wherever the hell I want to go, I think about how grateful I am that someone was smart and industrious enough to pull such an affordable fuel source out of the ground and make it available for my use.
Also, I'm grateful for lumberjacks for providing the material from which my home was built, and who have far more dangerous jobs than policemen and firefighters. You don't hear them beating their chests about it, though, and demanding they be allowed to retire at 55 on my dime. Funny how that it is. Guess it makes me like 'em even more.

Almost any adult can teach, and do an ok job at it without any formal training,
It seems to me teaching should start with a 2 year degree - 1 year teaching basics, and one year in whatever subject you want to teach. An advanced degree should be then following up your teaching associate degree with a 4 year degree in your subject matter.

Laid-off public employees will, in fact, create jobs in the private sector.
That is part of the shame of bloated government -- it takes intelligent, educated, able workers and makes them non-productive by putting them in jobs that involve work, not production. It destroys useable, serviceable assets, much as the cash-for-clunkers program did except with people. And people are not old cars. They can retrain, retool, regroup, and reinvent themselves to provide needed, valuable services and products.
If we were to trim down the public sector payroll, we might well have a 90's-like surge in the economy as well-trained workers hit the streets, eager to start bringing home the bacon again.

It used to be the case that the Federal Aviation Administration could count on Congress to fund it and that it wouldnÂ’t be held hostage to political posturing. Not anymore. We spent two weeks with furloughed FAA workers because Republicans refused to approve funding for their work.

Which can be directly attributed to the Legal Bribery they give our 'Elected Officials'.
But, just like the Ponzi scheme called Social Security, giving 'campaign contributions', FORCED from people who have no say in them, to the person who will directly give you a raise, is somehow NOT bribery, but legal.

At least here in NH, it's the clerical and support staff who know what's going on and get things done. The supervisors, with rare exception, are utterly useless. Not necessarily because they aren't capable, but because the sheer mountains of bureaucratic BS they have to navigate makes it impossible to maneuver.
Also, the support staff are the only ones who know how to do things like create an Excel chart, use Word tables, set up an LCD projector, log-in to password protected wireless networks, create a PowerPoint, change the toner in the printer and the copier, unjam the copier, use the binding machine, use the paper cutter...
For people with more advanced degrees (and much higher paychecks) than me, the sheer number of basic, grade school things my supervisors are incapable of doing is mind-boggling.

Yeah, around here, even in urban school districts that are top heavy in administrators and could probably save 3 teachers jobs for every administrator they lay off, they still lay off teachers first. Of course, laying off teachers is more visible to the parents and the public. Everyone is sad when they find out that Johnny's teacher lost her job. No one much notices if some useless education bureaucrat loses his job.

"Tiger Woods’ alpha mistress, Rachel Uchitel, said the 9/11 death of her former fiance, investment banker James Andrew O’Grady, was meant to be. “I believe Andy was meant to die because he was too good,” she tells Page Six Magazine, in The Post on Thursday. “I’m almost happy it ended the way it did because I’ve learned so many lessons from him. It would have been tragic if we got into fights and then divorced.” Had O’Grady lived, Uchitel — who went on to reportedly make $500,000 a year working as a VIP hostess at Tao Las Vegas and at New York’s The Griffin, where she met Woods — believes her life would have been much different. “I would be a fat housewife with three kids in Sands Point, LI,” she tells the magazine. The toned and tanned Uchitel recently sold her Park Avenue apartment and plans to move to San Francisco with her boyfriend, Matt Hahn. The two are talking about children. “I never wanted them … but I know how much I love my dogs, and I think I’d make a good mother to my own kids.”

Teaching your own kid (and, say, 2 - 5 others) is not difficult at all. Teaching an array of subjects to 18 - 24 kids on a daily basis? That's something different.
It is a skill-set. Like most skill-sets, it requires some training to achieve the basics, and lots of practice to master. I don't think teachers are "heroes" either, since America tended to do pretty well with far fewer teachers per pupil in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. However, there is an amount of hubris attached to the statement "Almost any adult can teach..." if you're not very clear on your premise.

I find it amusing that the military can take High School kids, and teach them real world skills, in a matter of weeks, with Military Instructors..
Now... what Education do THOSE insturctors have? TWO WEEKS on basic learning theory and how to write a lecture under current guidelines.... but then a very defined program where they sit through the class they will teach, taking instructional notes... then teach it with a qual'd instructor sitting with them....
And if they just do a crappy job? The command will find somthing else for them to do....
Civilian Teachers? Lots of Education, bu then they are turned loose on students. There is 'supposed' to be a student teaching program where they are being overscene by other teachers, but the times my kids had one, there was NEVER another teacher in the classroom....
So yes.... you do learn by doing... not by someone lecturing you in a classroom...

it really is simple...teaching highly motivated attentive students on whatever level is less hard than teaching defacto prisoners....
we need to shed the egalitarianism notion that all kids must be forced to intermingle and have delinquents present and focus our efforts on putting kids together ranked by motivation and ability.....
if a kid doesn't want to learn any genuine education put him in a trade class and then keep in a work farm which is what in his heart he views school as anyway.

This is pure politics, plain and simple. They always go after the front line workers who the public view as necessary and vital (teachers not so much, though the public has been duped into believing so) instead of the unnecessary employee base that could be trimmed back with little damage to public services. It's an emotional ploy designed to force local taxpayers to fork over more of their money to keep "cops on the street." Utterly ridiculous and completely shameless.
When I hear "non-essential government employees," I don't tend to think that the term means "these employees are unnecessary." For example, the IRS. I hate the IRS; who doesn't? And during a crisis situation, or any time that isn't tax season, no one is going to expect the IRS to do anything (I'm ignoring Obamacare because I want to). But at tax time, if you want to get your refund on time, or your dispute cleared up in any kind of timely fashion, you would want the workers available to handle your case. (It's government, of course, so "timely fashion" is a joke at the best of times.) That's why the IRS could be furloughed for 3/4 of the year, but for that remaining 1/4 you need them there.
The same goes for secretaries, lab technicians, janitorial staff, etc. I can understand those positions being furloughed as necessary to save money, but any kind of bureaucracy would fall apart in a matter of weeks without the support staff there to do the supporting. As I mentioned above, supervisors and superiors usually can't figure out how to work a stapler, let alone how to get the color printer to stop printing everything gray scale for a presentation to the House to get more funding for a nascent Defense bill.
You can't cut "non-essential government employees" 100%, because frankly they are essential in the grand scheme of things. But trim them back? Hell yes. Give me a big amen.

When our public school teachers are constantly asked to do more with less, when they work to prepare the next generation for an uncertain economic future, they deserve our deepest gratitude.
When? They are constantly demanding more no matter what their results are

Rick Perry said yesterday, in a Town Hall meeting in Myrtle Beach with Tim Scott............that: "there are no term limits for government bureaucrats....yet".
Now that's what I'm talking about.
Been saying for years that there should be term limits for tit-sucking goverment bureaucrats. 10 years, and its back out in the private sector. Lifetime employment in the goverment bureaucracy foments an 'Us vs Them' mentality.
And the 'Them' in that mentality....is us, as in 'we the people'.

Private sector managers are having to do support work now. Gov. managers just too fucking good for everyone else?
You'd be surprised what people learn in a hurry if they get desparate enough or really need those services.

No, the difference that, back in the day, we did NOT expect folks straight out of training to know their head from their ass... but had a Historic well defined set of tools to call upon to get them up to speed.
Its amazing that we have 5000 years of written military history, and theory, in the only truly Darwinian culteral context there is (you literally win or die), and yet they seem feel free to throw out what has been shown to work.
My Son is currently in Chicago (USN) waiting for orders to the Fleet, the same way I did a bit over 30 years ago.... trust me, I know things have changed...
But then, thats also what happens when you have more Admirals, than Combatant Ships.

She was so broken-hearted at the time but now sounds absolutely selfish. She's "almost happy it ended the way it did"? No regard for his family at all.

That is certainly one issue with American schooling. We send a much higher percentage of our kids to college to nominally prepare them for a job they don't want and that the economy will not produce anyway.
I mentioned I'd like to see teaching changed to a 2 year associates degree. I think a number of professions could stand the same. We are far too focused on credentials that don't mean much in the real world.

Yes, but knowing 6 different subjects "well?"
Besides, in "the corporate world" the student has consequences if they don't learn the material (from minor reprimands to firing, depending on the case), and in higher academia (that is: college and above) or private school for primary and secondary education, the student has similar consequences if they don't learn the material (up to being kicked out of school). In public primary and secondary education, that incentive for excellence does not exist for the student, so the teacher/instructor/proctor/whatever is at a slight disadvantage.
I'm not saying it can't be done, or that most adults couldn't learn to do it, but it is a different kettle of fish than home-schooling, or teaching people for whom there are real consequences for failure.
So yes.... you do learn by doing... not by someone lecturing you in a classroom...
Oh, I absolutely oppose "Education" Degrees and degree programs (maybe as a 'minor only' option, I could support them), but I do believe you need training to be qualified to teach ~20 12 year olds on English, Math, Science, and Civics.

well it also puts to the lie the little "woe is us" tax raising ploy that "american kidz are t3h suxxorz and rank 15-35th in everything..."
Most other nations subdivide their students into academics and vocational students so an apples to apples comparison always involves cherrypicking data....
if you are not proficient in math, science, and grammar by grade 5 in japan or Germany you are not put in the college prep course and if you do not "catch up" by grade 7 you get sent to technical school.....
the US would be better served by an army of entry level trained roughnecks, carpenters, construction workers, miners, farmers, factory workers, et al than a bunch of general education Diploma kids having to try to generate the revenue to get technical training or living off mom and dad.....
of course the unions don't really want those kids to be in their workforce so they back the NEA position of "half ass teach the half assed uninspired never want to be college kids"....
one nice side effect of the coming implosion will be less resistance to deep change in Red states that is more to our ideological liking.

I'm actualy more concerned about the Wimpification of the NCOs...
Historicaly it was THEM who taught both Junior Enlisteds, AND Junior Officers, what the military was about...
Went to my Son's Grad from Navy Bootcamp, and was horrified to talk to his Company Commanders... when I was in, CCs were CPOs... now? E-5s with about 10 minutes in the Navy? Most of whom had never been to Sea?
But thats what happens when the CNO says the Navy's mission is now more PC, than warfighting...
/gets off his soapbox, muttering...

Everything, even gratitude, has its limits.
Besides, I'm not sure that teacher-inspired left-wing indoctrination is something worthy of gratitude.

That has been my thinking for some time now. After the grand experiment of the SCOAMF, the states are once again going to become the powerhouses of government. We've already gotten some good examples: TX, WI, OK, etc. Other states are trying on that shoe also. It's a good thing.

In the USA we have around 750.000 fire fighters. Of that only 1/4 is union.
Yes I'm a fire fighter.

Sarah Palin's latest Facebook post is a big wet kiss to her "Union Brothers and Sisters".
Anyone want to tell me that she is not completely pro-union now?
