— DrewM I'd like to find an honest liberal to read but I've given up hope.
Here Washington Post blogger Ezra Kelin tries to show that the Ryan entitlement reform plan has not one but two "individual mandates".
Obvious question: Does the Republican budget have an individual mandate? Obvious answer: Of course not. Republicans think imposing a tax penalty on people who donÂ’t purchase health-care insurance is an unconstitutional assault on liberty.Correct answer: It has two.
...HereÂ’s how the Ryan plan works: If youÂ’re an individual whoÂ’s not covered by Medicare, youÂ’re eligible for a tax credit up to $2,300 to purchase insurance. If you donÂ’t purchase insurance, you get nothing. So, in practice, thereÂ’s a $2,300 penalty for not purchasing insurance. In essence, youÂ’re giving the government $2,300, and you only get it back if you buy health-care insurance. ItÂ’s slightly more roundabout than an individual mandate, but itÂ’s the same idea.
His plan for Medicare is even closer to an individual mandate. There, everyone has to pay into the system through payroll taxes. When youÂ’re 65 years old, you get a voucher that will pay part of the cost of health-care insurance. If you decide not to use the voucher, or the voucher is insufficient, all the taxes you paid into the system are forfeit. Either you buy insurance as a senior, or you face a tremendous lifetime tax penalty.
You see! Republicans are hypocrites and love mandates! They have twice as many as ObamaCare.
Of course, this only works if you define "mandate" as "personal choice to take advantage of a tax break/incentive or not". Actually, now that I read that, that's pretty much the exact opposite of a mandate.
I wonder if Klein thinks there's a mandate to have children. After all if you do, the government will give you a $1,000 credit. If you pay income taxes but don't have children you don't get that $1,000 back and in Klein's world, that's a mandate.
Of course this is all nonsense. As Klein admits, the ObamaCare mandate REQUIRES you to either show you have health insurance or they will fine you 2.5% of your income or $700, whichever is greater. No choice, no options just a requirement (aka a Mandate).
This is part of the problem that Ace wrote about earlier. It's simply impossible to engage in an honest debate when liberals simply feel no obligation to be consistent or factual.
One party is serious about dealing with our existential financial threat and one, along with their enablers in the media, are simply trying to score cheap political points.

And you won't. One cannot hold a "liberal" mindset and not ultimately get bit by a flaw in logic. So they are intellectually dishonest.

Why is it so important to many of you that we do see it? Curiousity? Doubt that he's really dead? - Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 04, 2011 02:27 PM (SY2Kh)
It's called CLOSURE.
Ask anyone who's ever had a loved one disappear and the body is never found. Until you actually SEE proof that person is actually gone, you can't EVER completely reconcile what you've been told happened and what actually happened.
This monster ripped a hole in the very fabric of this country. If the people of this nation don't have an opportunity to see for themselves that he was, indeed, no-kidding taken out of the equation for good, we will NEVER be able to fully heal.
The fact that a picture is released DOES NOT MEAN that a person has to go and look at it - many people don't want to see the body of a loved one after they pass away - but the fact that they can IF THEY WANT TO makes all the difference in the world.
And there is nothing in the world like seeing the "boogeyman" - because for many people under the age of 25 who still remember that day, that is EXACTLY what he is - for what he really is. Just flesh and bone and subject to the same laws of physics and justice as the rest of us.

ARRGGGGHHHH.
Just got off of the phone with some punk kid offering to see if I “qualify” to save money with a federally-funded program to help me pay less in utility costs.
I tried to explain to this young man that every program like this is funded with TAXPAYER DOLLARS. He told me “No they’re not. They’re funded with money from the government.”
So I tried to explain to him that the government only gets its money by taking from taxpayers, and only 53% of people pay taxes. He told me I should be glad that we make enough to be able to pay taxes, and that these programs exist to help those who donÂ’t make enough to pay taxes.
So I started in again on him, and he told me that everything that I was saying was wrong, and if I thought that I knew everything about everything, even though I didnÂ’t, he didnÂ’t have time to spend talking with me anymore.
Which is why he’s working a phone bank for a program completely paid for with Skittle-scented unicorn farts, I guess. ‘Cuz he’s so smart….

I live in Massachusetts and that's exactly how the state mandate works here. If you have health insurance you get a 1099-HC form that allows you to take a deduction for having health insurance. The only way around it is to lie and say you have a 1099-HC when you don't. It would be exactly the same as someone making up a SS# for a fictional kid. The penalty is for perjury, not for not having health insurance. Oh, and the religious exemption? Yeah, you can claim that, but only if you paid no money for healthcare the preceding year. None. If you did spend any of your own money for any kind of healthcare for you or your dependents, you have to go before a state commission and get approval for the religious exemption.

2. When do these cuts, discretionary in particular, commence?
#1: It would once again by done by the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, so someone would have to hold them accountable on this. But considering the bleeding from the last vote, I expect both R conferences would demand a greater number of immediate cuts for 2012.
#2: That depends on #1 and on whether they decide this is a placeholder or if they're going for a deal on all those items as written in the R budget. No way of knowing without seeing the context.
