Likely Liberal Plants Continue Heckling Romney
— Ace

I don't know for sure this woman is a liberal, but her question seems to be Kos-like, in claiming that government spending of all types must be defended at any cost to keep... emergency services during hurricanes.

And she does what the previous hecklers did -- she won't let Romney answer her alleged question.

If it's a question, why isn't Romney permitted to speak three words before she begins to re-harangue him again?

Romney deals with it like he did the last one-- asking her to let him speak, which she refuses to do. I suppose he does okay, with the proviso That no one does well when a heckler is determined to not even let you answer.

This seems to be the liberals' strategy. They may be trying their own version of the Tea Party town halls (but there, the Democrats were in fact permitted to answer -- the Tea Party patriots did jeer at the answers... after they were given).

All candidates, and not just Romney, have to figure out how to deal with this. It may become necessary to simply eject questioners who refuse to let the candidate answer a question.

Candidates should perhaps begin announcing the ground rules up front: You will be permitted to ask a question. You will even be permitted to ask a follow up. But if you attempt to talk down the candidate, you'll be ejected.

That might look bad the first few times it's done, but if this is a concerted, choreographed liberal strategy, it might be the best resolution.

Oh: People really need to turn on their cell phones and cameras and pictures of these people. Would be fun to ID them as plants.

And you know - If this running-for-president thing gets too rough on the old "Rom", he could stop giving interviews to any news organizations  but Fox.

That was used to great effect by our other candidates - Sarah Palin and Sharon Angle. Both good republicans.

38 We are going to see more and more of this because when GOP candidates start highlight Captain Kickass's pitiful record, liberals have to come up with something.  Given that, the basic strategy should be for all candidates to answer the question, if they are interrupted let the questioner speak then attempt to answer the question, when it happens for a third time, tell them "thank you" and move on to the next person.  If they make a scene, have them removed.

Libs are going to do this because they know how it will play in the media...exactly like it played today for Romney.  He 'went after a poor, poor constituent that just wanted to understand the mean ol GOP's position".  As much as I would like to see the Christie route taken, it won't work for a presidential election.

I think there's an easier answer to the problem than immediately forcibly ejecting questioners who try to talk over the speaker's answer.

Turn up the speaker's mic.  Loud.

Loud enough to where it basically completely drowns out the questioner.  And the speaker tells the crowd you'll turn the mic back down as soon as the person lets them finish answering the question.

It would really help if they could actually make a sound system without horrible feedback upon changing the volume.  I know it can be done, but so rarely is it.

If a mic is given to the person, at that point where the speaker gestures for the volume to go up, the mic is taken away.  If the questioner refuses to give up the mic, -then- the staff would have every right in the world to eject them, IMO.  That's basically directly interfering with their legitimate jobs.

Er, I kinda forgot to important part:

And the speaker tells the crowd you'll turn the mic back down as soon as the person lets them finish answering the question.  And then the speaker answers the question and easily talks right over the now-heckler.

But wait, lemme guess, there's a regulation as to how loud you're allowed to turn them up and it's barely louder than shouting.

Sean Bannion, Did I say it wasn't worth looking at? Good grief, why so polarized? I simply said it was before my time. I wasn't there during this time, so I was fully acknowledging in advance that my familiarity with some of this history may be incomplete. What's really interesting to me is that you associate Islam with socialism only between 1947 and 1990? What about the last 21 years? What about the 1300+ years before 1947? As someone who has a tremendous amount of modern experience with Islam and the Middle East, why would I assume some drastic change in 1990? History is of course relevant, but so is the proper context in which it existed.

You go on to point out the tribal nature of Middle Eastern culture. I'm confused by your point here though, because you seem to be introducing this as if it's something new to me. Did you not read my post 220 in its entirety? I pre-emptively brought this up (before you) because I suspected that's where you might go. And now that indeed seems to be the case. And in so doing what you also completely failed to do was draw any parallels between the tribal nature of Arabic culture and socialism. How are these tribal tendancies any different than the same sort of familial biases that exists in the Chrisitan world, including the USA?

Are you of the mindset that family units are socialist? One or two parents work, put money into a common account, and then those resources are dulled out to support the family. Parents pay for their kids college. Or grandparents will. In-laws float a down payment on a house. Dad pulls some favors to help his kid find a job. Is this socialism? I would like to see you explain how the "tribalism" that exists in Arabic culture is any different.

I would agree with you that Gamel Nasser was a socialist, but did I ever say there are no examples of muslim socialists? The issue we're discussing here is whether Islam, as a faith, leans towards socialism. I can name plenty of Christian socialists throughout history. In fact, I feel confident enough to even go so far as to say that I can show you several Christian socialists for every one Muslim you can name. Would you like to go there? Does this mean we should fear Christianity?

We aren't discussing individuals, but an entire religion and culture. Gamel Nasser was arguably a socialist, but really that was more at the start than anything. He was part of revolutionizing Egypt away from a monarchy. In practice he seemed more like a dictator than anything, and the socialist party he founded was quickly absolved after his demise. Labels are not always accurate.

In modern times I know of no socialism in the ME except in Israel. Even take examples like Halliburton. They moved from TX to Dubai. Why? Certainly not to get closer to socialism, lol. Dubai is much more free market than the USA is at this point. Sadly so.

Another commenter made a remark about Saudi buying off the locals to prevent a potential uprising. What goes on over there is completely different than socialism. Saudi is a monarchy, and a very unpopular illegitimate one. Also important to point out that it is to a large extent in power because of the US. We defend them militarily, we maintain the status quo all throughout that region. Not saying it's wrong, just saying that's how it is. Obviously we do it for economic reasons. Interestingly this is actually how Bin Laden started out, he was at odds with the House of Saud more than anything. His hatred of the USA developed from this. In his mind it would never be possible to oust the various puppet rulers in the ME, especially the House of Saud, until first destabalizing the USA. It does without saying Bin Laden was a terrorist dog, I in no way mean to defend him. But from a strictly strategic perspective, with the ultimate goal of topping the Saudi regime, he was right. And with our debt being so crazy now, his goal may well be realized after a while.

I'm happy to hear that you've served in the Islamic world. I'm sure we have a lot in common. And don't take this the wrong way, but I hope your perspective isn't strictly from the military. I know that for myself, my experiences in the middle were vastly different as a civilian than in the military. As a civilian I was able to actually develop relationships with people, even stay with friends in their homes in places like south Lebanon and Yemen. It goes without saying, the military experience is a lot different.

75 yeah, thanks for noticing this, Ace. I don't see why it's so important to pretend to care what hecklers have to heckle. The crowd is there to hear and to interact with the organizer, not to support the heckler. If the heckler is so important, he can get his own tent. Kick the disruptive out, arrest them. There is a line, I know that Dems will be happy to arrest TP's who ask "mean" questions, but there's a line where a follow up question becomes just an attempt to filibuster. So, fuck them.
