— andy Please, for all that is good and holy, make it stop!!!
Back to CNN this time, but with Anderson Cooper moderating instead of Wolf Blitzer. I'll take "Who is Gloria Vanderbilt" for $200 please, Alex.
Starts at 8:00pm Eastern. Livestream here
The usual suspects minus Huntsman are participating. He just got done with a New Hampshire town hall. Allegedly.
Drinking game:
- Do a shot every time someone other than Herman Cain says "9-9-9".
- Every time someone says "Occupy Wall Street" shout "Get a job you smelly hippies!" and drink 99% of whatever you have in your cup.
Standard reminder: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.
They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.
Liveblog thingy below the fold.

In the last debate, Perry didn't make any gaffes, but neither did he impress. He did not seem eager to speak at all, and seemed to want the spotlight to pass to others.
What if this is Perry's strategy? Didn't he hire a bunch of particularly smart folks to run numbers and studies of past elections before he jumped in? It seems like there was something here about it.
What if, knowing both the fickle nature of the electorate and that, statistically, anyone will screw up royally if given enough time in the spotlight, he's sitting back and waiting?
What if he's waiting for Cain to play out, thereby leaving only two real possible candidates between which tremendous disparity can be found?
In any other year, I would say it's a damn smart strategy but, this year, we find ourselves with a shortened calendar and the first primary is like, tomorrow.
Perry is not stupid. Not by a long shot. He's also not lazy.
If my guess is right, and he's been laying low, tonight is the night he's going have to kick it into gear. Otherwise, his goose is cooked.
I have argued for states such as Florida holding earlier primaries in order to offset states such as Nevada (fer Chrissakes!) picking our candidate, but if the speculation by some here holds true, that the establishment is pushing it to keep Perry out, well they (the establishment), too, may be expecting Cain to take a dive and Perry to surge once again.

I reached the point about two years into Bill Clinton where I could not stand to watch him or hear him. For Obama, the shut-off happened after about six months.
For Romney, I'm there already.
I'll read the liveblog after. Meanwhile, a good spy novel awaits.

Where are we getting the billions and billions to build a fence that they will just climb over or break? Perry is smarter on the border than anyone else. Just flippiantly saying build a fence does nothing but pander.
ACK! Obviously we would have to man it and patrol it too, but *any* physical barrier would help. Period. Ask the Israelis, or go searching for what they have built on their borders.

oh and why didnt Bachmann join in on that Romney gangbanging? the woman has obv. sold her soul to him
my analysis?
- Perry did GREAT
- Romney did fine but was def. his worst debate and 1st that prob. hurt him
- Cain will prob take a hit
- Bachmann and Gingrich did fine
- Santorum is still a dick

Perry did horribly. He was marginally better than in previous debates, but only because he changed his strategy into that of an attack dog. And a really ineffective attack dog, given the boos he was receiving from the crowd. Still can't speak. What a dud.
Cain's plan was poked full of holes and sunk. He will start to go down in the polls.

Romney and Gingrich are clearly the best debaters. Unfortunately, staring at either one of them for more than 6 seconds gives me an urge to punch somebody in the baby-maker.
Cain is far, far, more likeable. Plus, I don't buy the now "conventional wisdom" that it's somehow more conservative to have a really complicated tax code that confiscates your money BEFORE you ever get a chance to spend it. Call me crazy, but I'd rather pay a 9% sales tax than have the government steal more money from other people using the threat of force and an IRS audit.
Ron Paul may be "crazy," but sometimes you need a "crazy" guy to point out how "crazy" the sane people truly are. If I drink enough beers, I get very, very close to just saying, "Bring home the troops. Audit the Fed. Buy Gold. Vote Ron "motherf**king Paul." Then, he goes and blames America for Muslim men having small penises, and he loses me.
F**k it. Vote Herman Newteous Paul in 2012.

Definitely Newt for VP if Cain wins.
Newt as third VP choice with Romney if El Capitan Rubio and Cain passes.
Disappointed in Perry. Wish I had abetter sense of how Romney would govern with a large house majority but slim senate majority. His only experience was with a stacked far left Massachusetts SCFOaMF's.
One of the nice things you can say about Mitt is, he always has a plan, does his homework, and never quits swinging. Policy aside at least in that way he is different from McCain. Mitt does have some thin skin (Obvious Mommas Boy like SCFOaMF) after the left starts attacking him relentlessly I am starting to think he will turn more and more against them. There was some precedent with that in MASS he just had no group of non lefties to form up with. At least that's my best hope at this late hour.
In 2016 lets all vote that only Newt moderates the debates.

I sure hope that Rick Perry never, at any point, had a gardener, a nanny, a maid, any sort of domestic servant, or anybody else working for him in any capacity at any time whose immigration status was anything less than squeaky clean.
'Cause what I heard Mister Have-a-Heart essentially say tonight is that anyone who has ever employed a lawn care company (as probably half the households in this country do) that, in turn, employs illegal alien contract labor (as probably nearly all of said companies do, especially in places like, oh, Texas) without checking up on the legality of every person that company hires every single week is a hypocrite who has no business speaking out about illegal immigration.
Speaking of "hypocrisy", I don't want to hear about it coming from a guy who wants to hand favorable college tuition rates to the children of the people who were cutting Mitt Romney's lawn, to say nothing of the candidate who repeatedly and glaringly refuses to disassociate himself from a fundamentalist bigot who hates Mormons, Catholics, and who knows how many other groups.

This is why Perry's debate performances have hurt him so badly. We look at his performances and we see a guy who is unsteady and unsure, and who at times doesn't even seem to want to be in this. When asked his position on specific matters of policy he says "I'll roll that out later" (tonight was the second time in a week he's done this). He clearly wasn't prepared to run for president, and he doesn't seem prepared to BE president. Cain has sucked up most of his support because, lousy tax ideas or no, he projects all the confidence and enthusiasm that Perry lacks.

And by January the debates will have all but been forgotten as well. Perry just needs to continuing raising cash and hit the streets.
You do realize that there are like umpteen more debates between now and Super Tuesday?
Also, the Newt and Pelosi thing happened several years ago. Not exactly an accurate comparison given the amount of time that has passed.

He tried to pull both a Ronald Reagan ("I'm paying for this microphone, Mr. Green!") and Al Gore (getting into opponent's space) response during that exchange and neither worked. I know that's a matter of style over substance but I was surprised.

I think LSM and CNNs succeeded beyond their highest hopes to disillusion conservatives and make a bunch of awesome clips to use against republicans during the general. Obama couldnt have choreographed this any better.

Why not? Doesn't that depend a lot on us, the GOP grassroots who get out there and walk precincts and man telephone banks, etc? I for one will eagerly volunteer hundreds of hours for Newt's campaign next year.

I honestly don't give a fuck what any of those people have to say at the moment, not because everything they say is worthless -- even Paul is right on some things -- but because none of them are going to be the nominee. It's gonna be one of the top four, and probably Romney or Newt. Let's start the main fucking event already.

I think it was a group effort, though there are certain lawmakers who stand-out more than others. Some of them talked about the numbers, others about the moral and ethical ramifications, still others about how it would affect the economy, and some who did all three.

Yeah, kinda what the LSM did to Ronald Reagan when he was running against Carter. I remember, they all thought Reagan was so stupid and said really, really stupid stuff that they constantly played all the stupid stuff on the nightly news, obviously thinking that Americans would be just guffawing over this idiotic Republican fool. I'll never forget Walter Cronkite saying, "I can't believe the American people have done this" (or somesuch) and was actually crying.
If Obamy and his ilkettes want to use this same tactic, I say, okay by me. It'll just keep the rest of us fired up.

863 I think that theory is going to be put to the test in the not-so-distant future. You might be right, although it's not the only reason Newt looks good. He looks good mostly because he delivers really good answers confidently and coherently. Do you think Mittens gives a flying rats ass about Rick Santorum or John Huntsman (or Bachmann at this point)? Doubt it, quite a few weeks till the next debate and Newt will have fallen of the radar again by that time. These debates are the only thing giving him and the other non-entities exposure. That ain't enough to pick up enough support in this kind of campaign.

Newt's smart but no balls.

@831:
Yeah, and then we will have another President who isnt articulate enough to defend himself, his administration or the conservative cause. Great!
You make a very, very good point. One of the reasons Bush set conservatism back so far was that he would never defend himself and his ideas. It was so frustrating to see the MSM and Dems be slandering him constantly, and he just kept taking it, like a punching bag.
We really do need a conservative president who will speak articulately and often and educate the American people. I've read so many articles lately about how the reason something like OccupyWallStreet can attract so much sympathy -- the reason so many young people hate America and are completely clueless about what makes an economy, and a society, work -- is that we've had 40+ years of dumbing-down and leftist indoctrination going on in the schools and media.
Many commentators have rightly said that several generations worth of societal damage is going to take several generations to correct. We will not turn this huge ship around with one presidential election. We are in it for the long haul, and the first step in this long journey is to start educating people about those "first principles" that have gone ignored for so long.
That is a process that must involve everyone from the president and his or her bully pulpit right on down to parents sitting at the dinner table with their kids.
All of which is to say, if we're going to save America, we DO need a President who will use that bully pulpit often, and eloquently.
Posted by: Kathy from Kansas at October 18, 2011 09:05 PM (F0o5k)
Problem with that is it's collectivist. If a family is the most basic unit of society, what of the rights of the individuals in that unit? What end are they abrogated or subordinated towards? Who directs this unit? What of independent men and women who have left home but started no families of their own? Or perhaps have lost theirs entirely? Are these people disposable by society?
Problem is, the notion of family is malleable. A family can vary in size and shape and structure because families themselves are malleable. We are born into families and eventually start our own. The family you're born into will cease to be, you will create a new one and that one will cease to be. Families are, in other words, inconstant. They grow and change and break apart in various and assorted ways.
The individual, on the other hand, is constant. You are born. You are a person. You have God given rights that will not change. You have a mind of your own you can use to decide your own fate, up to and including, when you're a grown man, whether or not you will be a part of a family. A man will grow and evolve but his basic condition does not change, it will be the same from the day he's born until the day he dies.
I don't wish to understate the importance of families, but to reject individualism is simply antithetical to what makes this nation as great as it is. I reject, as a philosophical matter, any candidate who opposes individual rights, and the protection and security thereof, for any elected office.
I had to say it. back to the ONT for me.

Posted by: franklyNewt could claim my vote if he did two things:
1 ) Repudiate all catastrophic variations of AGW, the expansion of government in the name of AGW, and reiterate the demonstrable fact that prosperity and a dynamic economy are the wellsprings of conservation.
2 ) Apologize for backing Dede Scuzzafloppa, explain why the endorsement was wrong, and solemnly swear upon his own grave that he will never endorse any liberal ever again.
3 ) Admit he never read Paul Ryan's plan, apologize for intimating that the plan is 'right wing social engineering,' explain why our mixed economy is in such a mess due to real, left-wing engineering, and donate all of his wife's Tiffany swag to the Paul Ryan for Veep 2012 Fund.
That should pretty much do it. I'm not demanding or anything.

Many recall this issue from Romney's last campaign. He actually knew these folks were illegals. The stories were talking about these Guatamalans working 11 hour shifts on Romney's mansion's landscape. They didn't speak English. Mitt would say 'buenos dias' to them. The contractor was a prick about documentation, and Romney and he were friends from church. The guy had contracts with government as well.
Romney was informed of the problem, said he's never let it happen again, and indeed did nothing to prevent it happening again. It's hard to see how he didn't suspect they were still illegals, when you think about these folks working 11 hour days for crap wages, but hey, what do I know?
Perry is very strong on immigration, if you care about border control. His only weak point is something Perry's state wanted and Perry couldnt have stopped (though I admit he's defended it and owns the issue).
The only way to show people that Perry isn't soft on illegal immigration is to dramatically criticize someone else over it. That's a shame, but that's how it works these days. He's got a good record on it, and many didn't give a flip.

By then, Cain will have been exposed as not only a foreign policy neophyte, but as a foreign policy neophyte with a totally misguided economic plan. Newt will be the last refuge for conservatives and the ABR vote. Maybe Perry can mount a comeback, but I don't see it. No, debate skills are not the most important thing a President needs, but he needs some to get elected, and Perry has absolutely no debating chops. He's terrible, and he's the only guy running whose lunch Obama would pack in a debate. He's the worst I've ever seen in my lifetime.
