Liveblogging the AEI/Heritage GOP Debate
— andy

Oh, and CNN. The topic is national defense and foreign policy. The winner is Not Mitt unless you're Jen Rubin.

8pm Eastern. Livestream here-ish.

Standard reminder: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.

They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.

Liveblog thingy below the fold.

How about this for a standard reminder: letting Democrat-Party-aligned organizations like CNN host Republican debates, and thus control the format, content, and 'moderation' of Republican debates, is stupid and self-destructive.

64 In case this comes up,  I support the practice of American global leadership within a reasonable reach.

What I am opposed to,  American taxes and military blood babysitting Europe so that its dependency and nanny fascist governments can turn them all into children they never had.

A great leader could ever be confused with a babysitter.

If your national security plan was "call the Americans" how could you ever feel pride in yourselves as a nation?

So if the Defense Budget does not increaase, and sometimes increase rather steeply, your actually talking about significant cuts.

The House Republican Budget steadily increased defense and other funding and I have read that the final FY 2012 defense bill increases funding but at lower levels than the House proposal. So when I heard that Dr. Lew directed DoD to start looking at certain cuts for FY 2013, I assumed that the Administration was doing it for political purposes.

No amnesty, period. Any GOP candidate endorsing it can kiss their chances goodbye.

Posted by: The War Between the Undead States at November 22, 2011 09:44 PM (CUPAJ)"

Except Romney also schooled Romney's own record of hiring illegals (yeah, via a buddy, but he knew his buddy was employing them).  And Romney did zero about the sanctuary city problem in his state.  He made minor moves about illegals six days before his term ended, knowing they could never be implemented (and they weren't).  He did nothing in four long years.

Santorum has done some things about illegals.  Perry's done a ton about securing the border.  Romney just talks about it.

It's annoying that Romney can actually talk in the exact opposite direction of how he's governed and people don't laugh him off the stage.

It is no different than if Obama came out against Romneycare style mandated health insurance, or of Bush came out against preemptive strikes.  It makes no sense, and only shows what little respect Romney has for this great country.

Yes, which is why certain Republicans are attempting to react as quickly as possible to that side of the sequester. As for the $460B, that amount comes from the Pentagon, apparently. The original figure was $350B but is $460B when using the Administration's FY 2012 proposal as a baseline.

423 500 Ok.. I'm back to Romney.. It is apparent Perry has no grasp of international relations.. it's all talkin' points.

Perry is an unprepared fool who has no grasp of any of his own policy positions, international or domestic.  All he knows is what has been drilled into him by his debate coaches, and all he's capable of doing is regurgitating those talking points.  It's why he rarely answers a question put to him, instead veering off into bizarre tangents such as congressional insider trading and no-fly zones over Syria (and why his interviewers, such as the Fox panel on last night's "Center Seat" segment, have such uncomfortable looks on their faces as they try to decipher what the hell he's talking about).  He looks and sounds like a GWB clone, without GWB's intellect or political acumen.

Newt is the big (surprise) loser tonight, and his endorsement of amnesty up on that stage will ultimately end his campaign.  This is what sank Rick Perry (who, not knowing when to stop setting fire to himself, concurred with Newt's position tonight) and it will sink Newt.  This is a different world from 2000, when Bush could get away with running around on the campaign trail marveling at how American cities were beginning to resemble foreign outposts.  Republican primary voters remember very clearly how pols tried to shove amnesty down our throats in 2006/07 using much the same arguments Perry and Newt voiced tonight, and we won't tolerate any more of this shit from a presidential candidate.

I do hope that this debate shows us once again that the MSM stinks at moderating our debates!

Also, I really hope this wakes people back up in regards to Newt.  Remember why most of us hated Newt at the beginning of the campaign?  Newt is still the same backstabber folks - he just slipped up while playing professor and forgot how boned he is going to be for supporting AMNESTY!

Es la gente que piensen que las leys de nuestra piaz no son importante - ellos necesitan saber que los republicanos appoya los leys.

Why should the hispanics have "golden ticket" to disobey the law while all other groups have to wait in line?  I agree that the laws do need to be streamlined - especially for those that have skills and talents that we want.  Not only that - as a group - hispanics already are in the dems pocket.  They don't care that it goes against many of their social conservative values - they just like all the freebees the dems promise them.  Why work hard when you can become a dependent of the state?

I'm glad Romney and Bachman are willing to take a strong stance against pandering to the hispanics (who like illegal immigration) in favor of the laws of this republic.  When the laws got ignored, the republic will fall.

Actually, China isn't even our largest creditor anymore. Due to Quantitative Easing, the Federal Reserve has taken the top spot. Makes me wonder if maybe that was part of the intent? Reduce China's share of our debt while also reducing the value of what they do hold? Just as China's economy is starting to look rather bubbly. Although that thinking does sort of seem to require at least a minimal level of competence on the part of our "betters" in government, so I don't know...

Romney did okay, but what do you expect, he can change his beliefs and positions in a whim, he was a chameleon and performed as such.

Perry didn't flub, but then again, it appears that he wasn't all there....sure he was there, but he's like the empty shell just using his mouth to spout out words that someone else told him to.

Bachman did well in the areas of her expertise, however she passed up many opportunities to skewer Romney and Perry.

Cain did okay, nothing special but nothing awful, just what you'd expect.

Huntsman.......was he nervous or something?

Santorum, won't pick up any steam from this but he did well.

Gingrich --- contrary to your opinions, his answer on immigration was probably the best one, the only problem is that in order to get Romney the nomination, the GOP operatives will begin to make Gingrich look like he's for amnesty for every illegal all the time.

489 Let's be honest here:  everybody saying Bachmann "schooled" Perry on Pakistan is a Romney sycophant.  The Bachmann doctrine of paying hush money to terrorist-supporting countries is a joke.  What did our money do for us in Pakistan?  They acquired nuclear weapons and then hid Osama bin Laden down the street from their own version of West Point.

Bachmann to Despots:  The greater threat you pose, the more money we will pay you, and in no way will this encourage other countries to threaten the U.S. in exchange for cash.

So, to be accurate:  If their Visa ran out, or even if they entered the country illegally without a visa or passport more than 10 years ago, they cannot be tried for that federal crime.

Now, do you wish that the GOP nominee swear to pass an ex post facto law allowing for the criminal prosecution of those that have been here 25 years?

But Bachmann was right.  A nuclear Pakistan means we really can't afford to include it in Perry's blanket "start from zero" idea, until and unless we can get a stable, reasonably pro-U.S. leadership in (I'm not optimistic).  Pakistan is an enemy, but nukes change the game and put us in a bad position.  Bachmann understood this, Perry didn't seem to.

The problem isn't that Perry's wrong, it's that he doesn't really seem to understand or have thought through the ramifications of his own policy stances.  There are numerous examples of this.

Romney is right of Newt - and in 08 many would agree with that if asked.  It is tiring to see the constant "Romney is a RINO crap" and has no character.  Is he as conservative as I would like - no.   Does Romney pander - yap.  I do like Coulter's spin on it - he tricked liberals into voting for him.  In such a lefty state he managed to move a lot of stuff to the right.

Newt becoming the new Redjack was a bit much for me.  I thought Cain would be the last one but then Newt?  Romney's shift to the right has been consistent, he gets the flipper tag for doing this, but at least he doesn't bounce back to the left.  Newt is all over the place.  Sometimes he is saying great things in support of the conservative movement, and then he's talking about the need for cap-n-trade????  All throw back your statement - you don't have any business complaining Romney isn't conservative enough as long as you are backing Newt.

505 Why can't we take the lists of illegal aliens and crosscheck those lists with the people who have legally applied for American citizenship and to come to this country.  Those people should be addressed first.   They may be here illegally but at least they are trying to come in legally.   And like in other countries they should be required to have a job here before they come here, That would make sure we do get the best and the brightest.  If having a job doesn't appeal to people then make sure that someone is vouching for the person/family and will support them until they get on their feet financially.  With the enormous national debt we need to start charging a meaningful fee to new immigrants that must go directly to pay down the national debt.  You hear stories about people spending enormous sums of money to get out of some countries, maybe it is time they spend enormous sums of money to get into this country.

But, then again, you can feel the "she's a woman, so she's not relevant here...go home michelle" trend on here.  Similar to the Sarah Palin is stupid narrative.  Michelle has the "crazy eyes" narrative, which, by the way, was not evident tonight cause her eye makeup was done professionally.

The take away on the news was all about immigration.   You'd think they would have given immigration its own night and not lumped it in with national security.

The federal government has filed another suit against Utah over their new immigration law.  Pretty soon their hands will be forced and states will actually begin to regulate who comes their and who is permitted to live there just so they can have some control over the affairs of their state.  They can use the TSA model.  Interesting how the federal government claims they overstepped their bounds for a state.  Before you know it, we'll have the Supremes defining what a state can and cannot do.
