With almost one year to the day before the general election, this debate will be devoted to exploring the candidates’ positions on the critical issues facing voters—jobs, taxes, the deficit and the health of our national economy. [Moderators Maria] Bartiromo and [John] Harwood will be joined by CNBC’s Jim Cramer, host of “Mad Money w/Jim Cramer,” and a panel of CNBC experts including CNBC’s Senior Economics Reporter Steve Liesman, CNBC’s On-Air Editor Rick Santelli and CNBC’s Senior Commodities & Personal Finance Correspondent Sharon Epperson, who will also question the candidates about the major policy issues.
A few program notes:
- John Harwood is the hacktastic New York Times reporter who tried to resurrect the birther issue with Perry.
- Steve Liesman is the dumbest person on any network not called MSNBC.
- Squawk Box's Joe Kernen would've provided much needed balance to the libs on the panel. Unnamed sources at CNBC claim he had to wash his hair tonight so he couldn't participate. Sounds fishy to me.
- Rick Santelli's "Rant Heard 'Round the World" (video) was a major impetus behind the tea party movement. Expect recurring technical difficulties with his microphone.
This should be fun. And by fun, I mean why the hell do we keep letting libs run our debates?

The problem with eliminating departments, is that there may or may not be Constitutional authority to do this. If the President has to consult the Senate over hiring someone, there is argument that he must consult that body to un-hire that someone. The House under Andrew Johnson impeached the man on that theory, although, mind you, that impeachment didn't pass the Senate.

There's this kid in my night school class that just got out of college. He majored in Sociology and was taking beginner's Excel class. As soon as he said he was taking this class so he could put it on his resume when looking for a job, I thought to myself that they didn't need Excel for a job at McDonald's.

In mannerisms, and accent: yes. In governing history, no. Perry is, outside of RawnPawl!!!, the strongest states' rights candidate on stage. I doubt that his campaign team wants him to showcase that side of his ideology, as it scares the hell out of everybody but the base.
That said, his similarities to W don't help, what with the accent, the mannerisms, and the malapropisms. Despite the fact that his approach to government would likely be very different, it's easy to see a lot of W in Perry.

Willy, I want to vote for Perry - his track record vs. the rest of the field almost demands it. The issue is that the job you successfully interviewed for, brain farts and all, in all likelihood does not allow you to make war, negotiate treaties, or otherwise execute the office of the single most powerful man on Earth. I want Perry, I still think he'd be the best of the candidates at actually executing the office, but I don't see him convincing leaners at this point. There's no doubt in my mind he'd be a good president ("Silent Cal" Coolidge, anyone?). Our current environment does not allow a man like him to win.

OK. It's clear. We now know why Perry did not debate in Texas elections. Rick Perry cannot debate -- except when he can. Kind of like his grades in college. His mind isn't there for those purposes, but he can fly that military plane and he can govern and he can hold a legislature to a limited budget. Something like a dear engineer friend of mine. He had trouble with college tests, with the engineering boards which he finally passed, but if you ever wanted anything well engineered you would go to him. He had a vibrant career. State governments continue to call him -- after retirement -- for every truly difficult problem.
So. What's next? Perry should find a clever way to mock himself and keep going doing what he does best. There is no comparison to Herman Cain or Mitt Romney. He is head and shoulders above both for solving our problems. I'm in it for Perry for the long haul. And Gingrich. I like the latter's fire. I like the way he kicks butt. What a Republican asset -- at this time.

Perry claimed that he wanted to eliminate three Cabinet departments. He then tried to name them. He couldn't remember the third. Ron Paul suggested that maybe he was thinking of the EPA. Perry agreed. The mods were like, "Wait, you want to get rid of the EPA?" Perry said he did not. He then tried to remember the third agency that he wants to get rid of AGAIN and couldn't do it. Then he shrugged and said, "Oops!"
20 minutes later he remembered it was the Dep't of Energy and piped up and told everyone.

My employer looked at the big picture, job history, safety record, training records, credit check, interaction with others, and overall persona to make the final hiring decision.
That's similar to what I'm for in a presidential candidate. Not just who can give the smoothest answer.

So Perry made a flub. I often draw a blank on the names of people I have known for years. It's a problem that happens to most mortals.
People who are wrining their hands over every debate answer are simply not understanding the game.
Obama will only debate if he thinks he can win the debate. With almost all of our candidates, he would be the loser.
So you all had better start looking at these candidates for resons other than debate skills. Obama will not debate unless, like Carter, he gets really desperate. And if he does do one debate, it will be in late October. I do not think he will even do one.
So, if you pick based on debate skills, what is going to happen when there is no debate? We will be back to stump speeches, organization, GOTV, and record.
We have a long and terrible year to go through. Keep calm and carry on.

Most people turned off of CNBC immediately when the debate ended.
Most people were doing other things tonite....I'll bet the ratings for the CMA awards were higher than for this debate. ....Wed night is also church night for millions of people.
Not me. I watched it.
Perry did fine. Still voting for him. He has the best record. .....I don't give a shit how he does in these dumbass debates.
The media has succeeded in conditioning some people into thinking that these debates are the most important thing evah. ....Because they are the ones who have created these dumbass debates.
These are still the warmups though. There are still a lot more debates. The ratings will probably pick up in December....and those are the ones that voters will remember more.

You ever take a speech class or speak publically? Rule one if you are speaking without notes or a teleprompter never announce you are going to make a list unless you have that list written down in front of you. You get distratcted by the audience or moderater and you freeze.
Obama was a stumblefuck making speeches (still is when they aren't written down for him) George Clooney and a few other speech experts worked with Obama for weeks in late 2007 and 2008 to make the dumb fuck presentable. They did ok but he still looks like a moron swinging his head back and forth like he's watching a tennis match everytime he speaks.

I have lots of thoughts on this debate.
Mainly that I still support Gov. Perry.
I'd take a stuttering mumblebumble with a solid record any day over a guy that has to toss it over to the other guy in the debate (several times I might add) with no record. Or worse, the smooth talker with a downright shitty ass record.
As I've said on several occasions, I look to results; not hyperbole (or outright misstatements) in debates. So no one has to convince me in one debate performance - or ten for that matter.
However, I've studied the candidate I like. I realize most watch debates and get informed that way. Candidates have to be able to state their case at a debate or their toast. So I'm certainly not here to steer anyway away from that criteria. I realize it's important.
Anyway, I'll continue to support Perry. And if he drops, I'll happily give my time and money over to Newt. And if that doesn't pan out, well, shitI just don't know. I do know I refuse to go over to the dark side that is Mitt Romney until the general -- when he's our likely nominee anyway.

On one hand, nobody can deny that this looks terrible for Perry. I donÂ’t see how he gets the nomination, and if he does, that video clip is a campaign ad waiting to write itself.
On the other hand, this just illustrates the utter fÂ’ing insanity of how we choose our presidents and party nominees. In 2008, this country chose a president because he ran a good campaign and was supposedly a good debate (at least that was the perception). We are going to nominate him when we know in all likelihood heÂ’ll sell out conservatism as fast as either of the two presidents Bush. And we are going to do it because heÂ’s good at debating in these silly debate formats that have little, if any relevance to the day to day job of being president.

With that said, it's a blatant double standard when we're calling for Perry to step down from the race and yet when Cain looks every bit as silly in the prior debate it's a lighthearted and whimsical moment where people laugh.

People are afraid to criticize Herman Cain. I think that's a fair statement to make at this point.

As embarrassing as that moment is, there is no reason why it absolutely must determine who wins this primary. As a people, we enjoy mocking public figures for making this type of flub but we want others to ignore those same mistakes when we make them. Oh and there is a plausible scenario where Romney doesn't sign a repeal bill. One never gets to him because he doesn't push the effort hard enough and instead talks up "modifying existing law" so the squishes in Congress team up with the Democrats to give Romney some more of what he loves: Compromising with Democrats.

First of all, they can't knock him out in the debates right now...he has a strong base of support and he is polished enough that he won't implode with some stupid verbal gaffe. And Michelle Bachman is right, you need 2/3 and that means you need more republicans elected. Most of us would vote for Alf before we ever voted for Obama, but we're not the problem. If we don't present a candidate who can speak fluently on all the issues without the bromides and word fumbling and can articulately expose the ineptitude of Obama, we may not get enough of the necessary squishes to win.
This eliminates Perry and Cain from my list. For however many degrees more conservative they are than Mitt or Newt, they do us no good if they lose, which I am convinced they will. I will also give you that he is a great debater (2nd-best) but one of the reasons he receives support from certain people is because he looks the part of a competent executive and sounds like one too, but that does not mean he actually is one. He has a genuinely strong base of support. The 24% or so that have supported him all along are often mistaken by many around here as Romney's ceiling, but they're actually his floor -- the GOP primary voters who many of us would dismiss as "RINOs" or "squishes" or "moderates" or what-have-you.
It's easy to get so caught up in Teapartyville that you fail to realize that those sorts of folks still compromise a significant percentage of GOP voters.

He tries and tries to seem more conservative than he is, but a majority of the GOP voters know that he ushered in Obamacare. The majority of GOP voters are not-Mitt voters and it is because of this that the other candidates have a higher ceiling than Romney does.
But your point is very true, Romney's floor is the highest of any of the other candidates at this point. It just so happens that his ceiling is also the lowest of any of the candidates and as there becomes fewer and fewer candidates, Romney will more and more likely fall short of the delegates needed because of it.

As much as we wish it were otherwise - a) this isn't the prosperous 2000, where "a guy I'd like to have a beer with" can win. Even the idiots know we're in trouble, and this election isn't a Miss Congeniality contest. Hence the old electability rules don't necessarily apply.
b) With social media, blogs, etc. the microscope of politics is a fucking electron microscope. The intellectual requirements for the job have risen. You can get away with a gaffe or two if you've established reputation as no idiot. Unfortunately Perry's debate performances have been subpar, and tonight's "oops" moment plays into the narrative, likely defining Perry irrevocably.
c) The candidate, and the president need the brainpower to run rings around media bitches. This is now a job requirement to move public opinion.

IIRC, he wasn't polling as well when Perry first jumped into the race. But you're right, he does have a consistent base. However, my question is to whether his supporters boost him because of his record or because he appears more competent than the rest of the field. In other words, I'd be interested to see how he would be doing if someone who was well-rounded and more conservative was running.

And I used to be one of those people, parroting what I heard said about him on talk radio. And then one day I actually went and listened to Paul and I haven't found anything to disagree with. Having served in specwar in the military and Afghanistan and also having lived in the ME for over half a decade as a civilian, I can say that when it comes to Paul's foreign policy I agree with him basically 100%.

Romney has stated unequivocally that he would repeal ObamaCare. What else are you looking for? He made an attempt at health care reform in a liberal state using quite a few ideas from the Heritage Foundation, which has now abandoned that approach.
In retrospect it hasn't worked out, partially because the plan was changed after he left office. You are basically blaming him for ObamaCare but I don't believe that is fair. He never advocated imposing a Massachusetts solution on the entire nation as far as I know.
I was listening intently this evening, trying to find some daylight between Romney's views and that of most Conservatives. There wasn't that much from what I was hearing. He got a little heavy handed on China mentioning tariffs but that was about the only thing that bothered me. They ALL said things I didn't agree with. We could do worse than Romney.

Executive order for every single State in the Union signed by President Romney exempting them from Obamacare, especially the individual mandate. He has repeatedly and unambiguously promised this. There is no reason to doubt him on it.
Romney may be a political whore (actually, there's no "maybe" about it, he is!), but he's our political whore. He consistently and easily bends to conservative political pressures. And should he be elected president, he'll know there's not a snowball's chance in hell that he'll be reelected if he alienates the conservative base by deciding we all just have to "live with" Obamacare. (Incidentally, he knows he can't afford to alienate the conservative base in any other way for that matter.)
The individual mandate he pushed for and signed into law in Massachusetts was a bad idea. But let's not forget that the Heritage Foundation (a staunch right-wing think tank) and Newt Gingrich (a staunch conservative) both came up with the idea first and pushed it as a way of making free-loaders on the State pay their way regarding health care. The idea was pre-Obamacare by several years and there was no conservative outrage at the time it was made law. It's the kind of unfortunate philosophical mistake that is easier to see from hindsight.
Romney is obviously and adamantly opposed to Obamacare. So get over it.

I will continue my support for Perry. If he decides to drop out,I will support Newt with all my heart and wallet just to see him wipe off obummer during debates.
Newt is an extremely intelligent man and doesn't rely on " teleprompters" to make himself look smart.

You could elect a fucking rock to sit as governor in Texas and you'd get job growth because of a Republican legislature, conservative courts, conservative populace and just letting the free market work.

I don't know whether he's naive or cynical.
It's one thing to offer up an isolationist foreign policy.
It's quite another to hew to the left's critique of the US always being at fault - "gee, we should be BFFs with Iran!" was the nugget that he offered up upon recent IAEA news.
Seriously? That's his foreign policy? Is he insane or just willfully ignorant on foreign policy?
Maybe he's some kind of sperg and simply doesn't get the subject or something.
Whatever it is, he's unsuitable for the office.

I won't have anything to do with my local Tea Party. Heck, I'm at the point where I'd settle for Huntsman. My particular problem with Romney isn't that he's too Moderate. It's that he's a total phony who's spent the past seventeen years making that excruciatingly obvious.

I disagree. Perry has been pro-active with tort reform, which has made Texas extremely attractive to businesses and has, among other things, lowered malpractice insurance premiums for doctors, which has in turn attracted a huge flow of new doctors to the state.
Perry has also taken the lead in trying to make a college education more affordable putting together a task force to work on his proposals.
And of course, Perry not only refuses to take grief from the EPA, but has actually initiated a lawsuit against the EPA for its efforts to enact cap-and-trade by bureaucratic fiat. One more reason businesses like Texas.
Look, I'm a Newt gal, but I think credit should be given where it's due, and Perry's done a darn good job in Texas.

Texas has had a lot of work from a lot of directions to make it a success. It has good laws, and Perry was part of that as one of TX's ten best fiscal conservative legislators, eventually on appropriations, and very conservative. We also sell stuff, and Perry had a direct hand in this as he made trade deals all over the planet for TX agriculture. We have great laws that don't go too far in some cases, and go exactly far enough when they need to, and Perry had a huge role to play there are TX's first GOP LT Gov. And he's been governor for 11 years, with 12 years of balanced budgets and smooth, well run agencies with constant leadership to make small but effective cuts most recent years.
It's an excellent body of work. Those who say this has not helped Texas economically are simply not conservative. They are rejecting conservatism itself. Yeah, Texas has some of the blessings California has, but not really as many. It's government that made the difference. More to the point, Perry has restrained government from getting in the way, which is not always easy, and hasn't always been easy for him, such as when he cut education spending, which isn't something the Romney's have the balls to do.
Romney's governorship was an abject failure. Romneycare alone has resulted in a nearly bankrupt and soon bankrupt state, losing tens of billions of dollars. Romney's 'strong' gun control has led to an increase in violent crime. Those who reject why Texas is a success, just brushing that off, are fools. Perry may not be the right nominee, I guess (I like him a lot as the nominee), but he sure is a damn great governor. A hell of a lot better than any of these other candidates have been at anything, aside from Romney's outsourcing American jobs to China with Bain, first American investment firm with a Beijing office, which manufactures goods in China for 30 industries for 40 companies, most shipped right back here.
