Last debate of the year.

Standard reminder: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.

They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.

92 I love the Tebow reference

Speaking of Mr. T....

I was listening to NFL radio on the way home tonight and they were playing the mic'd clips from the last game. When Demaryius Thomas missed that catch, Tebow took an amazing approach. Instead of bitching and moaning and trying to place blame, he told him to not to worry about it, because he was about to score a TD.

The whole tape clip was of nothing but Tebow encouraging and applauding his teammates.

I wish he were running the company at which I was employed.

That's kind of what I'm getting at - how can you be the leader of the free world if you can't present yourself to the people whose votes you're fighting for in such a way as to seem at least semi-palatable?  I remember bumping into Phil Bredesen, when he was the mayor of Nashville, one night.  His shoes weren't shined.  Regardless of our disagreements on policy, that was a huge turnoff.  A man who can't shine his shoes or dress himself, who intends to spend his time in the public eye, suggests a lack of attention to detail.

Bachman should learn to stop lying about her opponents. This is the second debate in a row where she flat out lied.

Gingrich looks at ease.

Romney is doing well as is Santorum.

Paul is a kook.

Perry is trying too hard.

Huntsman is too smug for his own good.

270 VodkaPundit's version of that last bit:

6:41PM Paul: “If everybody did what I did, there would be no earmarks.”

Ahem. Cough. Cough. $300 million four Texas shrimp fishermen. Cough.

6:41PM To Perry: DonÂ’t you love big spending?

6:43PM Perry: “Don’t you beleive everything you read in the Austin-American Statesman.”

Also: The issue we ought to be talking about is how to reform DC. HeÂ’s saying this as a sort-of defense of Newt, and an attack on Congress. Which is half-controlled by his party.

A disjointed answer, but it got applause.

720 I've gone from completely dismissive of the guy to thinking I might vote for him

He polls ~15% in his home state, compared to Mitt's 70%.

I looked at him when he entered the race, but the guy seems to be a weasel.  Utahns reject him on character -- he has none.  Read up on the school voucher issue here when he was governor.  Lots of bitterness on that.  And he signed us up for some cap & trade thing.

Plus, what has he really accomplished in those various ambassadorships and WH appointments?  They seem to just be political patronage because his daddy is a billionaire.  (Daddy, incidentally, donated to Harry Reid.)  The China ambassadorship was worrisome to me because daddy's business has a lot of interests in Asia.

So basically you have a guy who governed in Utah for 4 1/2 years, then jumped at the chance to work for Obama where he accomplished nothing of note (except for polishing Bambi's knob).  Then he enters the race as the guy who will not speak ill of Obama.

I just see no evidence he intends to govern as a conservative.

I am grateful that he kicks Mitt in the nuts on occasion, however.

745 BSR If he loses ..New Hampshire of all places it's over just that easily for him. And it now may be the case that Romney can't even tell the story about dumping in a bucket straight- It was a rare reflection by Mitt Romney on his life as a young Mormon, offered as proof to struggling Americans that despite being born into privilege and amassing a $250 million fortune, he too had known hard times. A day after being labelled “out of touch” for casually offering a $10,000 bet to a rival candidate, Mr Romney told supporters he had experienced austerity as a missionary in France, using a bucket for a lavatory and a hose for a shower. “You’re not living high on the hog at that kind of level,” he said. But the Republican presidential hopeful spent a significant portion of his 30-month mission in a Paris mansion described by fellow American missionaries to The Daily Telegraph as “palace”. It featured stained glass windows, chandeliers, and an extensive art collection. It was staffed by two servants – a Spanish chef and a houseboy. Although he spent time in other French cities, for most of 1968, Mr Romney lived in the Mission Home, a 19th century neoclassical building in the French capital’s chic 16th arrondissement. “It was a house built by and for rich people,” said Richard Anderson, the son of the mission president at the time of Mr Romney’s stay. “I would describe it as a palace”. Tearful as he described the house, Mr Anderson, 70, of Kaysville, Utah, said Romney aides had asked him not to speak publicly about their time together there. telegraph.co.uk

746 Reggie You can hope to stifle the Right all you want on this but you will not be so lucky with the Liberal media. He might be talented in one area-dancing but he's hobbled himself.

747 What's anyone got against him besides foot-in-mouth disease? On policy he's perfect.

He is not very smart - not as bad as Cain, but he does not come accross as a heavy thinker.  He will be seen in the general as an even dumber version of Bush (note - Bush was not dumb IMO, but he did not come across as very elequent).

Perry comes across as a huge panderer to the evangelical vote.  I would not mind that it it was not so blantant that he is trying the 'ol Huck tactic of taking out the evil Mormon by getting into a "us" vs "them" campaign.  Being one of "them" it drive me crazy!

748 I liked in this order-

Bachmann
Santorum
Perry
Newt
Romney
Paul
That guy that worked for Obama

Of course Newt was the brainiac and I believe a panderer. He came across as such to me. I really liked Perry tonight.

But the positions will all remain the same to me. I vetted these folks a long time ago. I hope I won't have to hold my nose next year. Maybe if the nominee would give a list of possible positions for cabinet, they could convince me they are going to government from the conservative bent. I will not help elect, campaign...etc for a squish, I will do my duty and vote for ABO.

I'm calling BS on this one as an insider.  Was the mission home palace like - probably.  Most mission homes are nice - our's in Peru was in a very high end neighborhood.  Mission homes are designed to be nice because 1) they need to be big so that they can house large families (Mormons tend to be like Catholics, they can have very large families).  2)  They will be used to host local officials like Mayors and Govenors.  3) They are home for the mission president and his family (see #1) and this is not a possition that one can "work" for - you are called.

What a lot of folks do not understand is the way the LDS church operates.  Mitt did not "choose" to go to France nor did he choose to be an assistant to the president and thus be assigned to the mission home.  Most missionaries prefer not to be called to that position - we would rather focus on teaching.  Mitt did not get paid extra to be assistant - in fact he did not paid at all - none of do.

Finally - Mr. Anderson sounds like a total prick.  "Tearful as he described the house" give me a break!  Was he water boarded?  Did they use chinese water torcher on him?  Mr. Anderson is either not real or a real Mitt hater.  Please, don't make me tell - the Romney police told me not to talk about the pretty house.

There is zero evidence that Perry is bigoted against Mormons.  Even my LDS friends here in Utah don't believe that.

752 There is zero evidence that Perry is bigoted against Mormons.  Even my LDS friends here in Utah don't believe that.

I do not know if Perry is a bigot or not.  What I am saying is that he is trying to use the bigotry against Mormons to attract many of the evangelical conservatives in Iowa to him.  Huck did a very good job of this in 08 - plus Huck was smooth at it.  Perry is not very smooth at it.  He got hammered when pastor Jeffress introduced him with a blatant slam on Romney's faith.  Perry's response, "he hit it out of the park".  This was a bit too blatant and everyone saw it for what it was.  Now Perry is wearing his religion on his sleave in his new add blitz in Iowa - again like Huckabee's Christmas (I'm the Christian) add back in 08.  Huck though was usually more subtle about it - Perry is bull in the china shop subtle.

Is Rick a bigot, just playing identity politics or both?  I do not know, but its not for me.  If you are looking for a candidate, care less about article 6, and are a conservative evangelic - Perry may be your man.

753 Points scored: Santorum, Perry
Points lost: Paul, Newt
New Makeup Artist Needed: Bachmann (please, lose those lashes)
Newt should just be glad the Freddie-Fannie thing came up early so people would forget about it by the end.

I missed the debate so checked out the comments to see who one.  Looks like according to those that live in Texas, Perry did the best.  Those who are members of the GOP establishment, it was Romney.  Of course the resident democrats think Ron Paul won, the liberal media types liked Huntsman, and those looking to revolt against the Federal Government thought Newt did the best.

Nothing changed, everyone has their blinders on as usual.

755 I wasn't able to watch the debate, but read the liveblog instead.

It was better.

Thanks to all those who participated, you kept me informed and amused!

756 Was looking for some intelligent discussion. I can to the wrong sight. Most of you should know it's best to be thought a fool then to open your mouths and let it be know. Doug , Evan, and a couple others had some insight. I just hope the rest of you trolls understand the how important this is.

757 This is CRITICAL that we think through, the implication of the softspot we feel when “Dem judge nominating” Romney says how he is against gay discrimination. No argument, noble, laudable.

HereÂ’s the danger. That it is true, his self-admitted (over and over) moderate / 'mildly' progressive / non-Reaganite / non-partisan (!!) views will win out. That, in fact, believe it or not, he is telling the truth, and we worry, esp. with his abortion flipflops showing that his 'word' is worth $0, what it may mean for Obamacare or Souter-like judges. The danger:

MA Mitt will be a John Anderson (LIBERAL) type president

My debate grades: Bachmann A+, Romney A, Paul B, Perry B- (A on a curve!), Santorum C, Gingrich F, Huntsman F (for interrupting the debate)

I know she doesn't like Newt, but did he really do an F job?  Bigger question did Bachmann really do an A+ job?  Paul a B?  What the three grades sound very unexpected.

759 *If that were true, he'd be asking questions about how the candidates will tackle the country's problems, not asking about how they are attacking each other.

-I share peregrines complaints about the Wallace and leftists vs republicans junkyard dog / word twisting lawyer style.  Only Lawyers and sociopaths will succeed in that environment, not Alpha Leaders they focus on actions not words.  Try applying that same type of questioning to yourself.

Here is what it would be like if someone applied gotcha questions to you that might leave you stuttering or embarrassed... yet we expect our political leaders to be able to square everything they have ever said ever.

Sir -In march 1994 you said to your wife, quote "my goodness honey our boy throws like a girl,  we should keep him out of sports..." but in July 2002 after a a soccer game you told your son he quote "is a great athlete and you were very proud of him?"

Again Sir - in Dec 2006 to her face, you told your Mother in law how much you appreciated her for watching your children so you could take a vacation.  But mere days later in January 2007 to a coworker you said you wish she would stop meddling in your lives and die already? Followed by both of you laughing... (rolls video... gasps from audience)  Sir do you wish all old ladies would die or just ones you are related to?

How can anyone hearing these two disparate statements, believe or trust anything you say?

Ever since the Huge RINO from the northeast spurned Coulters advances she has gone batsh8t crazy. She is no longer a conservative she is a Cristy lovin RINO who had to much Gardisil as a young child.

Bachman is probably history after this mess and newt again was the wise old owl who inspires confidence that he knows where the bodies are buried, who buried em and in a pinch he will dig em up and beat the troops into line with em. That is exactly what the establishment fears! Insider trading Newt knows who, when , and how and he has leverage over every one of those crooks in DC as a result!

His attack on an out of control judiciary tonight again shows he recognizes the issues before the rest and I'm sure Mini Me will have some excuse as to why his stance is unsound.

If ya have to plead with the nation that Newt is being mean in rebutting your falsehoods and you "are a serious candidate" you are NOT a Fu*king serious candidate, and Coulter cain't get a date, call Herm Ann.

762 I see Ron Paul jumped off his campaign again and reminds us of the ahistorical "fact" that terrorists only attack us because we bomb them (just like the car thief only steals cars because the police locked him up for a year...for stealing cars) and that you can never solve these sorts of problems with expensive war. What a yutz.
