— andy Another one of these things. Tonight at 9pm Eastern on Fox News Channel (link is for the live stream).
These people want your vote:

That guy on the right looks vaguely familiar. Not sure who he is, but he looks baked.
Google *spit* has some part in this. Questions via YouTube, I think.
In case you haven't already seen this in the sidebar, my buddy Wiserbud over at The Hostages posted this nice reminder of why this is important today. Say it with me now ... S-C-O-A-M-F!
Standard reminder: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.
They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.
Also: We're going to try to slow the scroll down a little tonight. It got kind of out of unmanageable last time, so your comments are going to have to be extra good to clear the bar.
Liveblog thingy below the fold.

Well, crap. I guess me and my socks will have extra drinking time on our hands... assuming sockpuppets can have hands. Obviously drinking time started early.

"I hope they stay on slicing and dicing SCOAMF instead of each other."
Agreed, who can go after Barry the most effectively should be nominated, and this is the platform that should be used primarily to show those skills, as well as being able to deflect tactics Barry will use. I hope they go after Barry more than each other.

We don't have to give money BACK to the government. They did not give it to us in the first place.
We have to let the government TAKE our money at the point of a gun/jail time so they can redistribute it and pocket it through corrupt vote buying programs.
I do agree we should be able to keep all of what we earn, and let everyone pay some form of taxes for needed government services. Everything else can be funded by voluntary contributions.

yep, and the feds won't deport them, Perry probably did that just for control, cannot stop illegals from coming; no fence, and can't deport them once here, feds didn't do either, Perry and the TX legislature probably thought this was the best way for the state.

"but Perry probably doesn't have a choice since well, it is Texas where most of the population are minorities."
I think TX has a longer border with Mexico than AZ and already pays for a good chunk of it thru thier own state taxes, my guess is the legislature in TX probably were thinking, cannot stop them from coming in, cannot deport them, again what choice to do with people already here? the only way to stop it is to have strict deportations, and that won't happen until a new administration is willing to do this.

331I wish Perry would say something like, "Look - current federal policy makes it impossible for us to get rid of the illegals. If we don't educate the younger ones, they'll be nothing but a burden on the rest of us forever. I wouldn't have needed to do this if it wasn't for 30 years of bipartisan refusal to stop illegal immigration!"
Not a perfect answer... but a serviceable one.
Bingo! I wish he had said exactly that. It seemed like he went in that direction when answering Santorim, but he didn't articulate it very well.
He has to actually deal with the illegal problem, not just come up with theories that sound good in a debate. What the heck has Mitt ever done to stop or slow illegal immigraion? What has he done to advance the conservative cause at all in the last four years? Come up with slick debate answers?

You mean after he vetoed it a dozen times? He never did what you're claiming he did, which is perfectly in line with most of the Romney criticisms I hear. The only question is whether you actually think you heard what you are claiming Romney said after passage, or are you consciously lying because it fits your favorite meme?

I had an epiphany also. Make people buy their food stamps. Sounds rediculous at first but if people had to use money out of their wallet, whether it came from a minimum wage part time job or from welfare. If you get or earn 10k and have a kid, put up one dollar, get two dollars in food stamps. I plan on submitting this idea to a couple congressmen. Any feedback.

What will the GOP look like if we follow Romney's triangulation?
He's going to lead the country to the left. That's the easiest way to get the most power. There's a reason the people who live off government money, but happen to be Republicans, LOVE Romney. They need Romney, not some reformer. These times are ripe for a reformer to tear down a lot of wasteful spending. The fight to prevent that will come from all directions.
I don't think Romney is corrupt. Don't get me wrong. But he knows the easiest way for a Republican to get power is to capitulate to democrats sometimes. And the dems will know this and take advantage all the damn time.
That's kinda what went wrong with Romneycare.
What will the Tea Party do with a GOP like that? We will have a third party. It could even be a good thing, I guess, as the GOP would need to be eliminated if there's no way it can be the reform our country badly needs.
We can't keep kicking the can down the road on this. If the GOP can't do it, then we do need a party that will do it. Frankly, I think the GOP is totally capable of being the Tea Party agent of reform, but we need to pick the best conservative who can win in order to do that.
I wonder what the GOP would be like had Mccain won. Would we have more TARP and stimulus? Would we have amnesty and EPA regs out the ass and even a health care reform? I think there's a real chance we would, and then politically we'd be in deeper kimschi.
A Republican will appoint much better judges, and there are many other advantages. Obama is truly corrupt, after all. So I'll vote Romney if it comes to that. But it's not nearly the pragmatic solution some might think. It's actually extremely risky with little gain.
Posted by: Dustin at September 22, 2011 07:15 PM (fF625)
The people saying "oh shit I'll vote Obama or third party or stay home rather than Romney" are just being little bitches, IMO. Posted by: crowsting, who knows that Obama is a SCOAMF at September 22, 2011 07:16 PM (JNVm3)
Perry played the heartstrings card twice - 2 times too many in my book. He explained away his two most controversial policies to date (Gardisil and the "Texas DREAM Act") by essentially saying his feelings trump his party's "petty" politics (ala Jeb Bush's crying wife or W's "left behind" children).
As President, what's to stop such a senstive man from ignoring the rule of law and the will of the people to follow his (apparent) true muse - his own delicate feelings ?
He is one finely-placed black hair away from being a "compassionate conservative" in my book. In my gut he seems much more conservative than Romney, but I now have to ask myself if it's because of his delivery and mannerisms rather than his ideas and actions.
Perry lost ground with me tonight. None of the other frontrunners gained any, however. He's still leading my board. I'll put Newt in fourth place gaining on third until he inevitably frags himself again in a week or two.

There is no logic you can offer to justify this decision that doesn't make you sound like a crazy person. None. Four more years of Obama, at a bare minimum, would allow him to push the Supreme Court to the left for a generation. If you think that's okay just to 'prove a point,' then hey, fuck you.

699 JeffB - Same here - Perry not only took a mulligan on immigration and gardasil, he left a lot of potential gains on the podium. He frankly seemed unprepared, and very few of the questions were from left field or confusing.
Everyone knew jobs were the main issue and he had little to nothing to say on the subject. Very disappointing, particularly where he knows that Mitt considers the economy to be his own strong point.

In 1980 Reagan got the nomination and a whole bunch of Republicans were depressed. He was losing in the polls against Carter until the last couple of months.
Any of these people would be better than Obama. With the right general election strategy, any one of them could win.

Perry was horrible. He needed to step up big time to make up for his two previous mediocre performances.
Romney smoked him. "Nice try."
Shit, Perry didn't even look Romney in the eyes when attacking him.
He's gotta be on pain meds for his back operation or something...but holy shit...it was painful to watch.

Dude, I got on his wagon the day he announced. But it's been downhill from there. I honestly don't even care too much about the policy issues (as I've said ad nauseum), I care about the style and salesmanship. And I thought Perry would be so so much better at that than he has turned out to be.
You don't have to believe it, but I have no reason to lie about it, especially given the fact that everyone assumes I'm a RINO squish anyway: I wanted to like Perry. I still do! I was naturally averse to Romney, although he has honestly won me over somewhat with his performances. But more than anything else I WANT TO WIN.

2) When we have a candidate, as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, there will be included in every poll a potential third-party candidate--announced or not--who will have been pumped by the media. That is the JEF's only path to victory, a third-party vanity run. There are two people who might consider making a third party run if they are sufficiently pumped by the media even it means the JEF will win: Bachmann and Palin. Remember if I said, announced or not. Because the point of having a poll include Palin or Bachmann is 1) to suppress GOP turnout and enthusiasm (we could've had that one) and 2) to really get them to run and split the vote.
And there is one person on that stage who will make such a ploy possible: Romney. He is the only guy that will give the GOP buyer's remorse and leave an opening for the media to claim in some honesty that is the reason they are including these others in the poll.
That is why Romney gets such kid-glove treatment, that is why he is loved on the left: He makes a split in the GOP vote in the general absolutely certain.

Posted by: holygoat at September 22, 2011 07:36 PM (2ptZ1)
The only people who seemed ready for this debate were Gingrich, Romney and to a lesser extent, Cain. Bachmann had moments where she hit her planned marks but had no rhythm compared to those three, so I'll rate her a .5.
How 6.5 out of 9 people could sound so unrehearsed, flat-footed and verbally challenged when they've spent their adult lives doing public speaking and hitting many of the same notes, and after they've declared for office and spent months on the stump, is truly beyond me.
The format is abysmal, granted, but these candidates knew that coming in, and its not like we're asking them to build a bridge - just tell us what they think !It's their job to speak, persuade and debate, at least in theory. What they are actually doing with their time seems to be something wholly unrelated, judging by the sophomoric performance of 2/3 of the field.

Sorry, but I disagree. It was more than that. Reagan had spent decades prior to 1980 engaging in debates in his spare time. You can find video of some of these on the internet. Despite the "aw shucks" demeanor he gave off when he wanted to, he was very quick on his feet and had a very good command of facts in them. He had essentially prepped for the 80/84 debates for half of his entire career. This is where being an ideologue vs. just a straight political broker really comes into play. Reagan could do it. Despite the knock of being a B-movie actor that guy had heavily boned up on politics (both theory and facts) in his spare time and had debated it constantly. Perry doesn't have that sort of experience yet and so far can't.
Despite my dumping on Perry (and I was wary when everybody else was jumping on the bandwagon), I can't come up with anybody better though. I was slightly wary of Romney before, but I might have been able to buy he was just a fake liberal in the 90s. After seeing him demagogue Social Security and refuse to back down on his healthcare plan, I just don't trust him as far as I can throw him. Newt talks a good game, but blew it when he had the chance--both personally and in getting a fraction of the Contract with America passed. There's no one else I'm really even seriously considering.

Romney owned Perry tonight.
As an aside, when Perry went for the tear-jerk defense of the HPV thing and lied about the young woman he was friends with and the timing of the EO, I knew he was done. Bachmann and ABC News were already crushing that story within 15 minutes in the post-debate spin.
It isn't time to stick the fork in Perry yet, but it is time to get it out of the drawer and pick where in his empty head you're gonna stick it.

For all the attacks against McCain for being a RINO, he really doesn't even begin to compare to Romney. McCain is hated because he's attacked conservatives regularly, but he was always a reliable anti-abortion vote in the Senate, from the beginning of his career until now. He's always been reliable on defense. There are other major conservative issues on which he's been reliable. Romney, on the other hand, has flip-flopped on just about every single major issue.
I'll obviously vote for him against Obama, but I just can't get worked up over him at all in the primaries.

However, it would be funny to see her on stage defending her decision to quit her office and then say she is ready to fight for America against Obama. The laughter out of the audience would be deafening.

Timing. Perry vaguely noted he was moved by folks like that woman with cancer, when Bachmann claimed he was moved by Merck's lobbying and some vague corruption notion. Perry is trying to explain his HPV motivation was that women are dying of cancer, not money.
But this one woman came after his EO on HPV, so folks are treating his point as though he's a liar, which they are really kinda missing the point and being pedantic about this.

I think the people who love her, LOVE her, but they don't make enough of the electorate. The people who like her, like her but won't vote for her in a primary. And then there are some Republicans who hate her and really spread that hate in deep and insidious ways.
Posted by: sunny black at September 23, 2011 12:05 AM (0dyYY)
You might be right, but she would start off as the most conservative candidate in the field, which would give her a fighting chance. It would then be up to her to make something of that chance. Hopefully she would handle the opportunity better than Perry has to this point.

Perry is going to get hammered on this. If he tries to use a sub-Clinton defense like you just gave, he will get sledgehammered on this.

If they are going nut on this stuff, then it again shows how shallow (and stupid) they are. Compare this to the Obama fascist economy. I don't like the term crony capitalism when applied to Obama. I like the term fascist economy better. When you tell the libs that Nazism is the German version of socialism, they would go nuts.

-------------------------------
It is idiotic to dwell on this. That 's why I think this Gardisil attack from Bachman was stupid. Perry can admit that he was wrong about the timing. He simply was trying to explain his reason. He already admitted that he was wrong about the decision (even if he hedged it).
Posted by: LAI at September 22, 2011 08:29 PM (nLTW4)
But Newt has generally looked good on that stage. It's just true. If you can't vote for Perry, I think Newt is a decent choice.
I've been a fan of Newt's for many years. He's brilliant...moreso than anyone on that stage tonight, and I like him.
Problem is, most others don't. I've argued with them for years. It's futile. He can't win in a general election. It's a damn shame...but it's reality. The media did a number on him in 1995 of epic proporations. He did himself no favors in political and personal slips either.
As for Perry.....don't ever tell me I don't have a heart because I don't support rewarding the breaking of our nation's laws and the disrespecting of our sovereignty. He didn't just make a simple verbal gaffe. That's his attitude. He made it clear when he talked about not penalizing for their last names (twice). Tonight made it irrefutable.
No, what we have are two flawed front runners. The major difference is that Romney about ten times more prepared and articulate than Perry.
Posted by: Reggie1971 at September 22, 2011 08:31 PM (0DGtF)
There is no penalty put on regular American students under anything Perry has done. If you are in state, you pay in state tuition. Out of state, you pay the out of state rate. There is no penalty.
As far as the illegal aspect of the aliens, go for it. That is a valid point. But there is no penalty for American students. To say so is a complete lie.

Maybe the Romneytista is getting their wish for lite Romney version of Obamacare. Looks like Bachman and other candidates were trying to take down Perry while ignoring Romney 's weakness. Maybe the Romneybots just love the fact that Romney is a good compromiser, even praising Obama for having the gut to fire GE CEO in 2009. When the political tide was tough, Romney was smart to make peace with the left. That 's his strong point for sure.

Both parties have made illegal immigration something that is not PC to discuss. That doesn't mean that regular people aren't discussing it, just that they are being careful with whom they discuss the subject. Was listening to talk radio while driving today and there were two calls where the male callers were out of work and suggested that they lost their jobs because it was cheaper to hire an illegal alien. If the unions start thinking that way then perry is going to find himself out there alone.

the guy in the focus group articulated it beautifully. His son couldn't go to school in Texas cause he had to pay out of state tuition, yet, some illegal can waltz across the border and get in state tuition. Do you not understand that the man's son is an American citizen and that person would be penalized by virtue of the fact that they would have to pay out of state tuition, yet, they are favoring a person in this country, illegally, breaking the law, with a hundred thousand dollar bonus. Weighed against an American kid from another state and an illegal alien breaking the law, most Americans get angry. This will make them see perry as the pandering politician that he is.

If it took Romney to tell you that you have to pay out of state tuition to attend college in another state, you should get out more often.
Yes mary, I realize that the Texas Legislature damn near unanimously passed allowing illegals to have in state tuition if they are working toward citizenship and have been in the US for 3 years. That is a fact. If you have a problem with it, hold Perry AND the Texas Legislature at fault. Don't vote for Perry if this is the deal breaker. That is your right.
However, some bullshit sob story about having to pay out of state tuition to go to school in another state doesn't mean shit to me. One of my kids went to school in another state, and she was charged out of state tuition. It is a fact of life, not a penalty.

You're concern is legitimate. Eisenhower selected Earl Warren. Bush picked Souter. I can assure you that both regretted it.
GWB tried to appoint an unknown in Harriet Miers...and got dogpiled over it.

The 2008 Palin would do what you describe, but I am not so sure anymore. Not only that, but giving speeches and providing commentary are different than debating and she is out of practice. However, if she decides to join the race, we shall see.

I suppose I'll remember you as an ambassador for the Federalist Society when I speak of it to conservative lawyers and law students.
When they tell my some shambling sloth gibbered at them, I'll know why. Thanks for sharing.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be dragging the Federalist Society into this.
This is entirely on the Republican party. If it can't come up with decent candidates, don't be blaming the handful of conservative lawyers in this country.
Pox on ALL the "candidate's" houses, undeclared and declared. Not one of them is worth a spit.

Gingrich / Cain / Bachman / Santorum were spot-on on almost all issues.
Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at September 22, 2011 09:38 PM (Fn2b3)
I've waffled on Cain a little bit before today but lately he's been sharper and more impressive. He interested me the most in the debate. He just needs to keep on focusing on solutions I think, maybe add a little more to what he's already thrown out there.
Perry was underwhelming. I kept expecting him to pick it up or give an obvious answer but it never came.
romney was energized but doesn't change my mind about him.
Santorum, I'm not sure why he's still running. He'll be the next McCotter soon I hope.
I was interested to see how Johnson would fare given a chance with the big leagues but aside from stealing Rush's joke didn't do anything to real help himself. He seemed nervous and I doubt he'll be in the next debate. When is that, next week given debatefevah going on all of the sudden?
Paul still has some interesting things to say on the domestic side. But aside from his crazy stuff on foreign policy he's also looking like Methuselah. Wouldn't that look great in the general? I remember plenty of jokes being made about McCain being an old fart, Paul would be worse.
I like Newt but I don't see him being the nominee. Although would it be too much to ask for someone else to get the nomination and just have Newt stand in the debates against Zero?

debating is only difficult if you are thinking of the sound bites the next day and trying to craft a persona. Newt comes across because he genuinely seems to be a genius, is old and has lived a lot of the stuff the others, except for paul, can only read about and is genuine. Newt seems to have the attitude of "I'm going to make a difference up here, make people own their ideas, bring out issues and not really care what anyone thinks about me". He probably knows he doesn't have a chance but the debates have been way more interesting with him there.
People want to see someone who really knows the issues, takes a stand, no matter what the MSM or anyone else thinks, defends that stand with logical arguments, has character and loves the country.
Lately a lot of people are saying "well, so what if BO has another term, as long as we make sure to keep the republican majority in congress and get a majority in the senate". Some people are saying we need to "follow the bachman formula" for electing our officials so that BO care can be repealed. So, if people are thinking the president's power can be minimized by electing lots of republicans then they aren't really excited about any of the candidates.

Just watched the debate a second time.
Perry looked even worse. Catastrophic. Try to spin it all you want. He seems like he decided to run for President over the summer vacation while drinking a margarita.

So Missy80, Dick Nixon,
If Sarah jumps in won't that mean that all your judgements about her were wrong? Won't that mean that you were just sucked into the media spin? That is what you are repeating after all. What if Christie jumps in? Is that ok? Wasn't the field set?
So you used to support Sarah but because she didn't announce when you thought she should you don't support her anymore? If she were to jump in tomorrow would you support her? Or is your support for a candidate completely dependent an their announcement date? Is that how you choose a candidate?
Are you into numerology? Scientology?
I think none of the above. I think you are a liar.

Is Texas a "debate coach free" zone? How hard is it to prep a college-educated man in public debate? They know what he's going to be attacked on - give him answers, have him meorized them. They know what he is going to attack Romney on - write words that make sense and have him practice them in front of a crowd. How hard is this?
I like Cane, but I saw a softball interview with him and he did awful. He knows what he knows (mostly money), but he appeared clueless on other issues.
Newt for now.

Christie is different. He is who he is, like guiliani. He could probably be investigated up the wazoo and you would end up with "he is who he is". He doesn't generate the kind of vitriolic reaction that sarah palin generates. Probably because she makes herself out to be "goody two shoes" (my mom's phrase for people who want you to think they are nearly perfect but then have stuff underneath that shows they aren't). No matter how you slice it, she isn't the VP candidate who burst on the scene and was unfairly attacked anymore. She is a seasoned new commentator, a paid speaker and a successful author and media manipulator. She has evolved and with that evolution comes a realization from a lot of people that she was not who they wanted you to think she was. I don't think she is useful to the republican party as anything but an outside ravel rouser. If she enters the race you can just imagine what the dems will come up with.
Posted by: mary at September 22, 2011 11:00 PM (k1rwm)
I figured out why in my mind I thought that interchange stopped his candidacy cold. I kept thinking "where have I heard that?" and finally reading it in the post above made me realize, that this is the go to phrase for the libs/dems when they want to talk about things like immigration and redistribution of wealth and not taxing 52%. So, by using this phrase he aligned himself with the libs/dems cause he used their go to argument and not only that, everyone is busy trying to brand him as a dem in republican clothing, even his former boss, algore and what does he do, he goes up there tonight and throws gasoline of that fire.
that argument always puzzles me as one of my great grandmother's always tells me the story of her dad's sister who was stopped at ellis island. The rest of the family was allowed to enter the country and she was stopped. They didn't know why but they went and left her and she went back to where she came from, a thirteen year old girl. She was never able to come to the US and the family was poor and eventually some were able to visit her. That was horrible and heart retching but no one said the American people didn't have a heart, they said "well thank God everyone else got in". The mindset then, was different, more pragmatic.

Many of us begged her to run for so long we said fuck it and went to other candidates. Jerking me off is one thing, jerking me around is another.
Posted by: Dick Nixon at September 23, 2011 01:03 AM (vgTqP)
uhhh, Dick? The field is imploding, Romney is starting to pull ahead, and Palin would be the anti-Romney. Maybe what she's done by waiting to toss her hat in isn't a cock tease, but is somehow goddamn tactical? I dunno, but if Perry implodes, it's Mitt's nomination unless a strong, capable conservative gets in and wows them. Maybe Palin casts herself in that role. Maybe she's a goddamn genius or maybe she's a fool. When Perry declared I thought she had blown it by waiting in the popular aftermath, I thought Perry brilliantly stole her thunder. Now I'm not so sure. Don't be so quick to take your dick in hand, you may just miss out on the handjob of a lifetime.

Romney is a member of the Federalist Society. He has been since the 90s.
Romney is more conservative than anyone of the candidates from a conservative state. If Romney wanted to be a Democrat why wasn't he one? If he were a Democrat he would have been a very powerful one. That is where the power is in MA.
It is much more authentic conservatism to be a Conservative in MA, than a Conservative in Texas. It is much harder to swim up stream than go with the flow.
Romney will win because he is right on the issues.
Romney will win because he is better than anyone else in the race.
In a Democracy the one with the best ideas and the best performance should win.
Romney is no media darling like McCain. Or like Perry is the FoxNews darling and Rush's darling. Perry is nothing but hype. Palin is mostly hype.
Romney has beat all comers. He stands alone while his opponent's supporters make excuses.
Romney is earning respect. Romney is earning the nomination. If you can't support the winner who wins fair and square you just go ahead and vote for Obama then.

petunia, I'd sooner not vote at all than vote for Romney. He'd bring in the same establishment Republicans who screwed us for eight years under the Bush Administraation, except Romney doesn't even have Bush's backbone or principles. I would almost (but not quote) rather see Obama re-elected than watch Romney destroy the conservative movement from the inside out. Under Romney, the destruction of our country would continue unabated with the collusion of Congresesional Republicans...only at a slightly slower pace.
If Romney is the best the GOP can offer up, I wan't nothing to do with it.

I've always been a Palin supporter, but how is it not obvious that she was smart to wait? She still has the ability to still get her message out via Facebook or FOX News. Everybody covers her comments. Some of these campaigns are struggling for cash (it costs money to be 'in').
How many times has she said she would run an unconventional campaign? That seems like a bigger worry than a late entry or the perception that has been drilled into people's heads that she can't win.
Nobody has the ground game Palin has. She has people in little cities and towns across America just waiting to campaign for her. There are dozens if not hundreds of pro-Palin bloggers. She crushes everyone with her internet presence and ready-made supporters. Her biggest obstacle is people who tell her that she can't do it because the media has smeared her so badly (even if every smear is proven untrue). The same people who say she has waited too long and played with their support will probably rush to Chris Christie without hesitation (even though he swore about a million times he would not run - talk about a tease!).

This is who you're calling more conservative than any of the other candidates on stage:
Link
If Romney wanted to be a Democrat why wasn't he one? If he were a Democrat he would have been a very powerful one. That is where the power is in MA.
Not being a Democrat should not be the standard for qualifying as the Republican nominee.
It is much more authentic conservatism to be a Conservative in MA, than a Conservative in Texas. It is much harder to swim up stream than go with the flow.
Mitt Romney did not run as a conservative in Massachusetts. Period.
I'd say he governed as slightly more of one, but then I'd have to come back to his universal healthcare plan, which he still defends. His distinction about it being a state plan really doesn't mean much to me in that he still seem to think that on the state level in MA, it's a good idea.
My main qualm and virtually every conservative's main qualm with the program was anti-free market, would hurt the economy, and destroy the healthcare system. That was and is the crux of the debate. The constitutional aspects were an ancillary focus until it was passed.
He can talk all he wants about the legality of universal healthcare at the national level vs. the state level--but that doesn't comfort me much when he still thinks that it's a good idea.
More importantly, Mitt Romney doesn't get credit for swimming upstream in MA when he never bothered to swim upstream.
He turned on a dime, on major issues (without much of a credible explanation), as soon as it became clear he didn't have a career in MA anymore.

Nobody thinks Romney isn't well informed. It's his backbone and principles they're concerned about.
Charles Fried is the faculty adviser for the Federalist Society at Romney's alma matter, HLS. He also is very well informed and has lots of ties to legal righties. That didn't stop him from endorsing Obama and recently penning an article "Obama is too Good for Us."
Now, that doesn't make Romney an Obama supporter, but it is one of the reasons ties to legal righties aren't enough, by themselves, to keep me from worrying about Romney's principles and backbone.
Posted by: AD at September 23, 2011 03:33 AM (3v1zf)
Cain would slay Obama in a debate. If you don't want to to get stuck with Romney or Perry, then go donate to a true conservative, Herman Cain. We need to fight the media picking our candidates. The only ones they push are the squishes.

None of the Republican candidates are actually very good or likely to make more than cosmetic changes to federal policy. Opposing tax hikes, whining about Obummercare, and outworn platitudes will not help the country much in the years ahead.
The only positive thought is that any one of them is better than more Obama and I suspect any Republican candidate who does not self-immolate will be able to defeat The One.
Can 'anyone' (and I don't mean Palin) enter the race now and still have a chance in the primaries? Any better potential candidates out there?

You should be worried. I said upstream that judges are one issue where I actually trust that Romney has his head on straight. But (1) that doesn't mean he isn't screwed up on everything else and (2) it doesn't mean that he won't cave if there's a fight on judges.
I'm not sure about (2), but I am sure that Romney has some pretty screwed up positions for (1).

Geraldo defends Perry & Texas over a common sense solution...Yeah
Perry will slice into the Democrats Hispanic vote & have Reagan's Latinos campaigning for him. Not by pandering to them like McCain but by appealing to the conservatives & independents among them with border security.
#1 issue for Hispanics is education #2 is jobs. But the way Democrats unite Latinos is when immigration makes them feel under attack. Texans know this & so do conservative hispanics in Texas.

09/22/11: "If you say that we should not educate children who come into our state for no other reason than that they've been brought their through no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart. We need to be educating these children because they will become a drag on our society. I think that's what Texans wanted to do. Out of 181 members of the Texas legislature when this issue came up, only four dissenting votes. This was a state issue. Texas voted on it. And I still support it today."
So, first we're racists, then we're heartless. In the space of ten days.
President Bush called us "vigilantes" (03/24/05), McCain said we were too lazy to pick lettuce for $50/hour (04/04/06: "You can't do it, my fwiendsh") and Lindsey Graham complains that Fox is brainwashing us into opposing his amnesty schemes (05/20/11). No, actually, Senator, we listened to you and came to the conclusion all on our own that you're spouting complete horseshit. We come to the same conclusion when Democrats say these things too.
"I don't know how you would have written the Constitution in this environment."
Well, Senator Graham, the obvious and sufficient answer is that you would not have.
Anyway, if the in-state tuition for 16,000 illegals costs taxpayers $100,000 over four years, that's $400 million per year for that alone. Somehow I don't think that's a Texas policy the rest of us are interested in adopting. And I don't appreciate being called names by a Republican candidate. I get enough of that from the Democrats.
On the plus side, the President Zero ad is pretty good. I'll give Perry that.
