Liveblogging the GOP Presidential Debate
— andy

The third (I think) in our series of debate liveblogs begins tonight at 8:00pm Eastern from our virtual barstools outside the Ronald Reagan Pub in Simi Valley, California. Hopefully the Cover It Live application won't crap out on us again like it did last time.

MSDNC is handling the broadcast ... man, is their viewer going to be pissed when he and/or she sees all these Republicans on the screen instead of the usual evening lineup of hosts representing viewpoints across the ideological spectrum from the merely only very leftwing to the extremely leftwing. Debate we much!

It's also being livestreamed by the DNC's Internet-era leafletting service othewise known as Politico.

Update: Also being streamed by MSDNC.

Participants are Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

Liveblog thingy below the fold, and, as always, the comments will be moderated to keep them from scrolling by at ludicrous speed. So be witty or intelligent. Or both. Luck helps too.

Also, if you've never been to the Reagan Library and find yourself in the state of Southern California at some point, GO! It's well worth the trip.

Note [ace]: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.

They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.

A comment stream with 1500 people commenting simultaneously would not be readable. But we couldn't even do that if we wanted.

I think he's nervous. (also he may be a bobblehead, I dunno not conclusive)

But he's doing good when he's talking, but he seems to be talking a bit much. Very eager, at any rate and not at all timid.

I think he's besting Romney and so is still the front runner. But I couldn't possibly be more biased so it doesn't really matter.

I want a candidate that says taxes and regulation are unfortunate and the fewer we have of both the better we are.  I want a candidate that understands that letting people live and make money for themselves is the way to make the country prosperous.

Really?  That doesn't surprise me at all.  Most non-scientists know the names of half a dozen scientists from history, max.  Usually they don't even know what they discovered or studied.  I doubt the great Jon Huntsman could name three AGW scientists.

Look, Perry believes what he believes out of faith.  That's fine.  Whether or not he thinks there's some sort of scientific basis for his belief, the fact of the matter is that there is not a large body of research published in scientific journals that disputes the basic concepts of evolutionary biology.  There may be a handful of folks who think they've found fatal flaws in it, but why should Perry know their names?

Perry and Romney did fine, with Romney making me feel good as my plan B for now. I don't think you'll see any polls shift with this. ace will tell us he flopped and he'll find many commenters disagreeing. Huntsman will take some Romney moderate voters. Gingrich proves he's good for the debates still and Bachmann is officially not a front-runner anymore. Hunstman will be pushed by libs after bashing the GOP tonight and getting off to it with his smirks.

NBC sucked though. CNN had a better debate. FOX holds one on the 22nd. They've done better.

677 Newt is by far the most masterful candidate in these debates. The guy is just a fount of knowledge. I just don't trust him because he'll lay a huge turd every once in a while -- something really unforgivable and not trivial -- to undermine all the brilliance. But this guy needs to be in the Cabinet or the top policy adviser to someone ideologically conservative. I don't want him as President, but he's truly a top thinker and wonk.

IOW, Newt was the most astute and clear. To me, he won the debate.

But Cain, Romney, Bachmann, and even Paul gave solid answers. Perry was good enough but needs some polish. I'm certain he'll get better in style and delivery.

Overall, the GOP has an fine selection of candidates. Any and all of them would be a significant improvement over SCoaMF... if they do what they say they want to do. And that's the real rub where we're pretty much counting on a divining rod to point to the "best" candidate.

Perry, God Bless Him, needs to be coached on the proper way to address Climate Bullshit questions - he needs to cite Climategate, the fact many of the same "scientists" that today are hysterical over warming were equally hysterical over Ice Ages only 30 years ago, and of course all the new studies indicating the Sun is by far the greatest factor in GW. It wouldn't hurt if he threw in stuff like, Even GW pushers admit only half of the warming is human caused - and that is probably way, way overstated. But even if it isn't: China and India will produce carbon like mad, so why should WE destroy our economy? Never just the fact that scientists are being intimidated into silence, papers being written, legitimate scientific dissent being purposefully suppressed.

Perry was...less forceful than he should have been.  He really needed to be unapologetic.  Stop letting himself get hammered on that bullshit fence cause, hey, it's not working for Texas.  He was pretty good on Social Security, but his defenses are weak and need fortifying.  He's right that SS isn't gonna be worth a shit in 30, 40 years and he needs to drive that fact home.  Hammer it, again and again and again and don't hold back.  Romney wants to kick the can down the road.  Fuck him.

THIS!

I agree. i think his perspective might be interesting for people to hear. you know, INFORMATIVE even

713 Perry was...less forceful than he should have been.  He really needed to be unapologetic.

It was, what, the first debate he's ever participated in?  This was his introduction to many of the people in this country.  I think he did just fine.  He doesn't need to be pure, he needs to get elected.  Then he can unholster his six-shooters and, you know, I think that's exactly what he will do.

720 Perry effed up bad on the AGW question, but it isn't fatal. It's not like he gave Huntsman's answer or anything, and it was on MSNBC, so hardly anyone saw it. It was the best possible place to eff up if you're gonna eff up. He will watch his answer, realize how stupid he looked, and take care of business so he doesn't look so stupid in the next debate.

732 @ 795 good points.

In my perfect world, Perry's answer would have been more like this: Brian, so called global warming is junk science put in place to confiscate more of our tax money. When the earth was young, the oceans receded, and an atmosphere formed would you consider that climate change? How come the earth was much warmer during the Mesozoic era? The time before humans and it wasn't cataclismically destroyed? Were the mini ice ages over the last few million years caused by natural warming/cooling cycles or solar activity? If you can't define the perfect temperature for the earth right now, how do we know if it's really too hot or too cold....

No, it's not. What you do when you get there is an accomplishment. Show us his brilliant writings on law. Show us anything of substance from his schooling.

Interesting after all his years as Senator and 2.5 as President, getting into schools is the only thing you can think of that shows Obama's "intellectual depth". Very interesting indeed.

The school did confirm his status, including that they offered him a tenure-track position.  After researching what law schools look for promotion to tenure (I was able to find guidelines online for some middle-tier state schools), I am convinced the offer was a mixture of wanting a political patron and affirmative action.

Obama never produced a single scholarly work.  Not one.  Even as an adjunct faculty member, that's pathetic.

I don't know - I think we've discussed re-education camps before.    I mean I think we'll all have personal reservations because we read and/or comment here.

He did okay.  I want to catch that first half hour that I missed, but what I saw he was...okay.  But it's not his first debate ever, he's served in elected offices for over 20 years, he's debated many, many times before.  It's a different level, but the rules are the same.  He can do better.

Also, I'm not arguing purity.  I'm a libertarian, not a conservative.  If I vote Republican I'm already cmpromising a great deal.

Watched the whole thing..... They all did good, some more than others.

If audience applause means anything, it seemed like Perry got more overall applause.......Newt hit it out of the park when he stood up to the dickhead moderators.

Motor mouth Mitt Romney speaks too damn fast. He comes across as a desperate infomercial type guy.....He would lose votes on that alone across the South and Southwest.

Perry's slow way of talking probably is irritating to folks from the Northeast. But that's how most all of us talk out here in Middle Earth. It doesn't mean we're stupid. It's just how we talk......Bush's speech patterns were a hybrid, because he spent time in both the NE and in Texas...... Perry is the real deal, 5th gen Texacan.
