Livestream Video of Conflict in Tahrir Cairo Square (Bumped and Updated)
— Genghis

From Al Jazeera

Heavy gunfire and running street battles for the last hour or so.

Bumped and updated: Daylight now in Cairo and the clashes continue but toned down a little. Egg McMuffin break and so forth. Al Jazeera has switched momentarily to yapping about Israel/Gaza but stay tuned for the return of 50 cal. gunfire and molotov cocktails. Also hash browns.

The Al Jazeera feed is in English, which nearly three people who read this blog understand, so it's all good.

Also, it's official name is "Tahrir Square" but is also being referred to as "Liberation Square" by those who are, well, trying to liberate it.

"The fuel of revolution! Minus the Canadian Bacon of course!"

8 5Military takeover soon?   It's kinda' hard to say who exactly it was that was raining 50 cal. fire on the anti-Mubarak protesters tonight. Even eyewitnesses didn't seem to be clear on that. As I understand it, the military itself seems to actually be something of a stabilizing factor and that it's the police and even paramilitary forces that might be responsible for whatever's going on tonight.   And that's not to say that I think that the protesters are little darlings themselves.   It might actually be better in the short term if the army does take control and stabilize things...keep the two sides apart until calm is restored. They're mostly Western-trained and seem to be one of the least corrupt and more professional military forces in the area. Of course that's relative....

14 What I'm finding annoying about the coverage is people who act certain about events and speak with authority, and you know they don't know a thing--or that they can't be certain.  People want so much for things to be nice and simple. We know this is history repeating, a la Jimmy Carter.

Victor Davis Hansen administers the sadly relevant historical perspective we need, with a historian's eye for the miscues and blunders we older folks remember from the Carter Administration. I say read the whole thing.

What I learned from this sad rerun of failed policy:  the way to deal with international tension seems oddly similar to dealing with tensions at home, where an armed populace is a civil populace. Likewise, a vigorously capable national defense is how you keep the worst of the world's misbehavior at arms length. (The missing apostrophe is intentional.)

The next president is going to have to strengthen more than just our borders.

That would probably be the best possible outcome.  A decade ago I would have said that following Turkey in governing style was the way to go for them, but Turkey has taken a turn for the worse since then.  It's still the best model, with the secular military as the ultimate supreme power, one can reasonably envisage for the Egyptians. ... but even Turkey doesn't have that anymore, and it's been steadily sliding into the abyss.  Turkey and Egypt did share a lot of secular requirements in many public institutions.

It doesn't mean you have to be a thoroughgoing bastard, it just means you don't take any shit from anyone. Carter/Obama not only kowtowed and took a lot of shit, they "made up for it" by throwing allies under the bus.

After two massive FAILs at this, by grinning and kowtowing, and getting Nobel Peace prizes for pretending to give a shit about peace, people ought to wake the hell up and and realize we should never bother with that approach again.

Nope, just another person who doesn't think we should being our evaluation on how we deal with a score of indepent countries based on a single entitiy.  Can you think of how European relations would have turned out if we were Britiain centric?  What if we valued Czehkslovokia ( I know it doesn't exist anyomore) above all else?  How would our positions have changed?

We're at the point where Arab Tyrannocracies are beginning to fall.  Oddly, this comes after we sent in military forces to topple two of them directly (who could have seen that coming?).  So the question is, why shouldn't we get in front of this and support democracy on the cheap, as it were?  It's not like they will have campaign finance laws nailed dow in Egypt before we can pour funds in, exactly.

"So the supporters of repressive dirtbag Mubarak are fighting with supporters of the group that spawned al Qaeda in a land where (78% to 95% need citation) of the women are genitally mutilated for Allah..

Maybe if you didn't get your stats through...  you know what?  Even the internet doesn't lie like this.  It was officially (re-)banned in Egypt in  2007, after it had been unofficially banned for, I don't know, forever?  None of my female relative have been circumsized, to include my wife (YAY!).

Wow, I really don't even know how to respond to that.  If you had been deft enough with Bing or Google to use the actual English transliteration, Taqiyya, your statement might mean something.  Unfortunately for you, a google search reads: (http://tinyurl.com/6dwovjb).

Try again.

108 AT: Driftwood Diplomacy

Obama, determined to become the Muslim world's best friend, has in spite of his efforts unleashed the dogs of war in the Middle East. He has essentially told Iran that they are free to develop nuclear weapons and to meddle in the affairs of Lebanon with no consequences. He has given Hamas and the Palestinian Authority a green light to confront Israel, as U.S. policy is now to browbeat and intimidate the Israelis to accept any agreement. In his Cairo speech in 2009, Obama shamelessly blamed the West for all the problems with Islam and never once used the words "terrorism," "terrorist," or "war on terror." Earlier in the same year, he met secretly with the Muslim Brotherhood -- the progenitor of Hamas and al-Qaeda -- thus legitimizing the organization with a wink and a nod.

109 There is some good news coming out of this.  Cooper getting his ass kicked and a near miss on Amanpour.

I assume everyone knows that the Blind Sheik is the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.

111 Well,  I checked this thread for news,  but seemingly it has been taken over by a troll.

VADM,  I do know about the Muslim Brotherhood (established in 1928 and not due to American policies,  since we weren't even IN the Middle East then).

I am still pondering how much of this is leftist and how much Muslim Brotherhood and Iran.  Code Pink had a presence in the square yesterday.  coupled with the red flags,  I would say leftists are also at work in this deal.

114 "Tahrir" means "liberation" in Arabic.  It the 2nd Measure verbal noun of the root meaning "to be free."

116 Boy, I'm sure glad we had a troll here to fix the spelling of something "in English" that's actually from Arabic.

If only there were a hard and fast rule for spelling translations in non-English glyph systems. If only there were some agreement on such a hard and fast rule. And finally, if only you could find enough people who actually give a shzt. Why then, you might have a tissue-thin, trace of a typical troll's argument.

But good luck with the trolling program. Speling and gud gramer are very importunt in troll posts.

Allah is a false moon god. Da'One supports Iran's ruling party, and the Muslim Brotherhood. WTF over?
