Living with the Nightmare - President Romney. [ArthurK]
— Open Blogger

Not a lot of Romney fans here, eh? Yeah, I hear ya. But it makes sense to have a Plan B.* Plan A is for our favorite candidate (SaraPerrCainRich) to drive Obama before him and hear the lamentations of Michelle. But what if that doesn't happen? What if... (dum dum dum) we're stuck with President Romney?

*Plan C is 4 More Years of Obama. Just be prepared for a Zombie Apocalypse. Most of those steps would work there.

In today's (Nov 4) GFile (email so no link) Jonah Goldberg was musing on a President Romney. Here are the relevant paragraphs (I got his permission for this extended excerpt) along with my anti-fisking (since I mostly agree with him - I just want to pile on)

(after expounding on Cain for a bit...)

I have a similar complaint about Mitt Romney. As Mark Steyn and others have pointed out, Romney has a disturbing tendency to simply take his ideas off the conventional-wisdom shelf. He lacks the conservative's skepticism that the "latest thinking" might simply be very old thinking gussied up as a breakthrough idea.

It's hard to see this tendency in him when he's in campaign mode, because it gets obscured by the pandering and positioning, but trust me, it's there.

Where I think Romney differs from Cain in this regard is that Cain's a manager. Hire a professional, motivate him, and stand back. Romney's a technocrat. He thinks that the government is there to fix things. That's what Romneycare was about, after all.

Cain is a manager. Romney thinks he can manage AND do things. He's one of the elite - he knows better. He knows about Hayek's "Fatal Conceit" theory. And thinks Hayek is right - most of the time. "I'm the exception", thinks Romney. "I'll fiddle with things just enough. A light but expert hand."

What worries me about Romney is that since he starts from the assumption that government can fix things, he thinks the way to fix things is with government. (Obviously, this is sometimes true, even according to us extremists. There are legitimate functions of government, and in those areas I can see Romney being a pretty good, even possibly great president.)

While I certainly don't like the pandering, flip-flopping, parsing, tacking, difference-splitting side of Romney, it doesn't bother me as much as it does some of my friends, for the simple reason that I don't think it tells us too much about the kind of president he would be.

Sometimes campaign styles tell us a lot about what kind of president a candidate will make, and sometimes they don't. George H. W. Bush campaigned one way, and governed another. His son pretty much campaigned the way he governed. Obama tried to campaign the way he governed but he found out that his campaign style -- promising a unicorn foal in every home, same-day soul mending, tidal prestidigitation, dragging "cynicism" out of its barca-lounger and junk-punching it for the children -- was hard to translate into a workable governing agenda.

I see Romney much more in the tradition of George H. W. Bush. He sees politics as a tacky business where you dance for the rubes so you can get the job your dad always wanted you to have.

He may have only served one term as Gov, but he's spent decades campaigning for Gov., the Senate and President. He's a smooth politician who would have been more successful had he been in state not as far-left as Mass.

The trick, therefore, for conservatives in a Romney presidency -- should it ever come to pass -- is to see Romney like a tool. I don't mean tool in the pejorative sense, like "Man, that John Kerry is a tool." I mean it in the figurative-yet-instrumental sense. Romney needs to see that his number-crunching wonkiness must be applied solely to ways to dismantle the current inefficiencies of government, not for creating new ones.

I don't think his experience at Bain Capital is all that well-suited to creating jobs in the private sector, at least not in the way he talks about it. But the ability to effectively downsize and streamline large institutions to get them refocused on their core competencies, strikes me as something we can use in the Oval Office, so long as we point him in the right direction. If he's pointed in the wrong direction, well, ugh.

And that's the key. If we get stuck with President Romney we can get much of what we want done! Here's Milton Friedman's "Create the Climate" quote again.

I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.

Romney is a normal American politician, not a wannabe tyrant. He'll be responsive to our pressure if we press hard enough. He would also be responsive to RINO pressure. It's our job to press harder.

To some extent this is already working with Obama! Here's bit from Mark Steyn's America Is Doomed essay in Commentary. (this is the optimistic part)

(same Friedman quote as above)

Just so. Every time Barack Obama stands at his teleprompter and is forced to pretend that he’s interested in deficit reduction, we have taken a step toward that Milton Friedman reality. You have to create the conditions, as the Tea Party and the town hall meetings did, whereby the wrong people are forced to do the right things.

One cannot wait for the great leader to descend from the heavens to do the work for us. Every glamour boy, from Barack Obama to Mitt Romney to Rick Perry, proves to have feet of clay. It’s more important that tens of millions of ordinary citizens move the meter on public discourse and force the wrong people to do the right things.

Yes, it would be easier to have Zombie Calvin Coolidge/Godzilla stomp all over DC and fix things but Hey! This is America! This is our country! We can fix things ourselves and, in fact, we're supposed to. We got into this mess by being lazy and allowing our elected leaders to act like Elite God Kings.

The Mayans were right. 2012 IS going to be the end of the world. The bullshit world of the nanny state! (cue ass-kicking music)

1 Yeah right.  In 2016 we're either going to be pining for the days of Jimmy Carter or desperately looking for a conservative candidate to take Romney on.

7 So true. I am fully prepared to campaign for Romney after the primaries. None of this sour grapes Ron Paul or death bullshit. Obama is the enemy and Romney is not bad enough to make me forget it. So, this whole "conservatism will die" shit from Erkison is just that...shit. If Erikson is right, then conservatives in California should just blow their brain out now and get it over with. No, Erikson is wrong and conservatism won't die. So, I will support Romney if needs be. I will support anyone on the debate stage last night.

Exactly! That's what I've been saying all along; no matter who wins the election, we cannot relax and go back to business as usual.

Even if Mr. or Ms. Perfect Conservative wins, he or she will be facing the Wall of Death that is the DC bureaucracy/kleptocracy. The next president has to fear us more than he fears them and that will take our continued vigilance.

25 It's weird...from a nonpartisan view, Romney is clearly the best candidate from the GOP - polished, competent, presentable, intelligent. Yet conservatives seem to be everything they can not to elect the ONE guy on their side who may match Obama on a stage.

Posted by: proudonkey at November 10, 2011 10:53 AM (NadeK)

26 I have been arguing this stuff for weeks. The biggest realistic step we as conservatives can take towards smaller government (eventually) is moving away from an omnipotent, personal cult-like imperial presidency (now). This, coupled with a strong conservative hand from the legislative branch has the potential for a successful Romney presidency. It actually might make an asset of one of Romney's biggest faults (weather-vane).

Amen. And aaaaa-men!

The mere fact that we are discussing having to choke back our beliefs and vote for Mutt Romney is telling in itself. The primary purpose of an election is to elect those you can agree with and trust.

The Mutt doesn't score well on either count.

Despite Goldberg's lofty pronouncements, I'm thinking the bottom line is that he wants Romney. After all, The Mutt is one of Our Crowd, the Political Elites who will save us in spite of ourselves.

Such unmitigated horsedung.

Yes, as a Massachusettsoid, I agree this state is a cesspool of liberal do-goodism. But it seems to me The Mutt didn't even put up a serious fight for any kind of government-reducing, money-saving principles.

Cain, as pointed out, is a manager. I think his idea is that he can serve as CEO of the country, bringing in people who will make his ideas happen. To some extent, I see Perry the same way. Neither comes close to being the Ideal Candidate, but both are far better than The Mutt.

42 What pressure are we going to put on Romney that will lead to the closing of cabinet departments and a 50% reduction in federal spending? Hint:it's not going to happen.

If by some miracle we haven't collapsed by the time he takes office, we will see a mild economic improvement as the fear of Obama recedes-but this will be a false sign that things are getting better. The real problem-excessive systemic debt-will still be getting worse and will continue until the collapse.

Do you think Romney's the guy to put it back together when the bottom falls out of everything? Then knock yourself out getting him elected. I just don't see any reason for optimism.

Why assume that Conservatives will be any more influential on His Mitts than the other side? They're going to pressure him too, and whatever they want is going to be presented loudly as the will of the real majority. There is no anchor holding Mitt to the conservative side.

I think there's no chance at all that we stave off collapse for 5 years, but guess what we get after the failed Romney presidency? A primary among all the people we wish had run this time, against him? Of course not as it would be too divisive within the party to challenge a sitting President. No, we'll get whatever bugfuck loon  promises to fix Obamacare for reals with more borrowing.

72 There has to be a technical way to solve this problem.

I don't know about technical, but, really, debates don't matter that much.

I remember in '08 being harassed by a few (and one in particular) Obama supporters.  All the time.  Every day.  More BS about how Obama was going to save us.

Now, that kind of thing is a) wasted here in Texas and b) wasted on me in particular (as I think it would be on most of us), but it did work in far too many cases.

Well, the answer is to do the same thing.  Once we have our candidate- lobby for them at work, over lunch, in church.  Don't be afraid to bring it up and point out why our candidate is better.

But, of course, first, we have to do that to Republican Primary voters to explain to them why Perry (while, yes, flawed) is far better than Romney.

73 I will not vote for Romney, and also, I do not agree that he is the most electable. If he can't get anymore than 30% of the Repubs, how will he get more than that in the general? Although it is a sore subject for a lot of people here, Perry will at least not lose all of the Mexican votes. he is strong on immigration without having made enemies of the Mexicans who are here. I say wait and see how Perry does with his media blitz before we resign ourselves to settling for an almost RINO (Mitt would have to improve to be a RINO). Perry seems great in interviews, just not great at debates.

Why It Doesn't Matter Which Republican Is The Next President

One of our biggest problems is all those federal bureaucracies infested with hacks and Leftists. These people are responsible for a lot of really bad federal policy that is really hurting our nation in so many ways.

Bush did nothing to clean it up. For instance, Karen Kraushaar. She's just one example of the losers in the federal govt. And look at all a-holes in the Justice Department. And in the CIA. The leakers and spies and saboteurs and perpetual plaintiffs.

It doesn't matter if Rick Perry is elected or Mitt Romney. Neither of them will rid the house of these varmints.

The Left writes the news and the Left writes the history. So Hoover got all of the blame. Even though FDR is the one who turned a normal depression into the Great Depression.

The Left already has the narrative -- George Bush plus corporate greed ruined the economy in 2008.

108 I'm eagerly awaiting dreading the cries of "The MSM / elite establishment picked our candidate!  Again!"

Know who's fault it is for the dilemma we're in regarding the current field?

Ours.

First there were was the canonization of Palin who, despite her inexperience, unpopularity, baggage and lack of substance, was heralded as the Great Alaskan Hope.

When it came to the Iowa straw poll, we looked at an inexperienced flake and decided "Look!  Pretty!  She's a fighter!  Tea Party yay!".

Then came Cain. "Oh, I love it that he has no fucking clue about anything and steps on his dick every 5 minutes- it just shows how authentic he is!  And I like hearing him talk!  And he proves I'm not racist!".

Had we not become so deranged (yeah, I went there) over having to deal with Obama and four years of a Congress controlled by Dems, perhaps we'd have been more sober about this.  Instead, we've become by irrational, over-emotional, short-sightedness.

So yeah- if and when Romney gets the nod, don't whine about the MSM or "establishment"- take your frustrations out on the nearest mirror.

The "weak governor" charge has been applied to both Bush and Perry as a pejorative. Both Nixon and Reagan came out of CA.

If we're able to put another seven Republicans in the Senate, especially with TEA Party help, and increase the number of TEA Party-oriented members of the House, we'll be looking at the equivalent of 1994 - 1998, when the Republicans were able to force Clinton into reforming Welfare and balancing the budget. With 54 in the Senate, squishes like Brown (assuming he beats Warren,) Collins and Snowe will be somewhat marginalized, and with Reid no longer majority leader, we might be able to get some blue dogs to vote with the Republican majority.

200 Came to this site about a week ago and I'd like to give Ace kudos - good site and I loved the last 2 cat vids.  Ok nuff brown nose on to the point.

I was (in 0 and still am a Romney supporter but I know that "a few" here are not full blown fanboys.  Ace makes a great point for those who have a hard time with Romney and I'll make one other.  During the last campaign there was vid on the net, it was put out by a Romney supporter but not the Romney camp.  It did not spread around like the vid if the kid telling everyone to leave Brittany Spears alone, but I wish it had.  The vid was of Romney helping remove tree stumps shortly after a fire - it was a church activity to help members affected by it.  This was during the campaign but was not a campaign stunt (I can't even find the video now).

At a campaign event in Texas as Romney was preparing for a photo shoot, one of the organizers suggested Romney wait in the shade of his garage.  After 1/2 an hour when they were ready, Romney had cleaned and organized his garage.

The point, the guy does have a great deal of good character and the real Romney is not the politician.  Most politicians try to put up a false front as a good person, Romney is a good person who puts up his false front as a politician.  Yes he comes accross as fake because the politician Romney is not the real Romney - in this rare case he is much better as  person.

Posted by: Reno_Dave at November 10, 2011 03:53 PM (OL4L4)

Sharon Angle was a nice lady I would've been fine voting for. She was not a great campaigner but hey, it happens. That is a really bad example. I hate Mitt Romney as much as Obama. I'm not voting for him. He is a scumbag. HE doesnt even pander to conservatives in the primary, he wont pander to us in office. He's an arrogant piece of shit and that is all I will ever see him as. I'm not a fucking robot that says ABO and chooses to place a Republican who is just as liberal and would damage conservative prospects for years.

208 Because of the implementation timeline for Obamacare, the next President needs to be a leader in dismantling it. I do not see Romney accomplishing that task if elected.

209 Hey he took a 3 billion deficit and turned into a billion plus surplus.  Romney's health plan tried to get rid of the unfunded mandate that no seems to talk about - allowing freeloaders free health care through the ER.  His solution - which borrowed ideas from Heritage, had support from both sides of the Mass. legislature (it could not pass without the Dems).  It worked but it opened the door for lefties to tinker with it and it has morphed from its original version.

He did a great job in fixing the olympics and turning around various companies - including his former company of Bain Capital.  His record is better than his rhetoric unlike many politicians who have it the other way around.

Sorry, I just do not see the "moderate" apocalypse in Romney that others here see.  His not a scary guy.

212 No way is Romney NOT going to work to get rid of Obamacare.  He has promised over and over that he with both give out waivers to states (step one) and then work to full repeal it.  Too much political fallout if he doesn't fallow through and I think he is honest in his desire to get away from big government. He is all for free market solutions to healthcare.

213 Ah yes, the latest at AoSHQ on The Marketing of Mitt: How To Take The Absolute Peak of Conservative Political Power In American History And Flush It, And Flush It, And Flush It, While The Bathroom Floor Becomes Awash In Dilute Feces, and Love It. Plus, there's always this: nominate Romney, independents hate his gutless guts and reject him, and there we are, having sold our souls for the most soulless sell-out of a so-called conservative the nation has ever produced. Because then we'll have 4 years of looking forward to Big Serious Debates at the Corner on how we all dropped the ball on ... Huntsman. Spare me. Spare us all.

At a campaign event in Texas as Romney was preparing for a photo shoot, one of the organizers suggested Romney wait in the shade of his garage. After 1/2 an hour when they were ready, Romney had cleaned and organized his garage.

For me this has the opposite effect. Anyone see the problem here? The property owner did not ask Romney to clean his garage. Romney presumed to know the "best" way to organize it.

215 Eff you, that's why. At least that's the logic I've been reading here recently. Of course, as far as Cain goes, logic has no place here. It's all about sticking it to the man.

217 Fuck it: if we go down, then at least go down with dignity. I have been a Perry pusher from day one, but after last night, that way is death in the general: thousands upon thousands of loops playing his highlights of serial mind farts, over and over, all through into the debates, where he DOES IT AGAIN, REPEATEDLY, right in front of Obama and everyone. Cain is out of the question. Forget the allegations about those women, that's all he said they each said and that way never gets resolved; he's simply incompetent and women will vote against him in unprecedented numbers. So, it's coming down to the guy I never imagined would make a serious come back, the guy who keeps winning every. single. one. of. these. debates, nine and zip right now, no doubt twenty and zip by the time the whole messy business is over. Someone who can form a sentence, a paragraph, entire books, entire budgets and agendas and programs. Some whose past is now rendered not-at-all bad compared to these other clowns. Someone we KNOW who will get up on stage with Obama and take him on, and we can be PROUD, because he's said the right things and said them well. Nobody gave Nixon any serious hope of a comeback after the debacle in California in the early 1960s, but Nixon then won the White House twice in a row and made the big pitch towards the Southern strategy, the thing that actually saved this party from electoral irrelevance. So he went nuts - he was ALWAYS nuts, but he put a cap on the Civil Rights Act, he started up the conversation on energy reality and he had the guts to take on Mao head to head, and his legacy included Cheney and Rumsfeld and the unjustly underrated Ford, a whole slew of top of the line conservative judges, and the guy who started Fox News, just to list a tiny percentage of all he brought about and left in place. If we get Romney, AT BEST we get Obama in sheep's clothing. AT BEST. And we sell out three or more generations of work that went on between 1968 and 2012, 44 years down the toilet. Flush, flush, flush.

218 #226-- I looked up the article you linked. It was written by Michael Medved, who always tells his listeners, "Of COURSE, the President isn't a socialist." He also notes that in the 2008 primaries, he didnt' vote for Romney. "I proudly voted for John McCain." Maybe you should find a better source.

219 #226-- I looked up the article you linked. It was written by Michael Medved, who always tells his listeners, "Of COURSE, the President isn't a socialist." No, he argues that it's not effective to argue that the President's a socialist. It's a small difference, but it's important.

Seriously, you people who say Romney=Obama don't see how retarded you are. I can see saying that Romney isn't as conservative as we'd like. I agree with that 100%. But when anyone standing to the left of Palin (or hell, not named Palin) is equal to SCoaMF, you lose credibility with everyone using their brain to figure this out.

223 I've said many times, I didn't come in to this as a Romney supporter. Far from it. He's not even my top pick at the moment. But when I read the arguments of the anti-crowd I don't see any actual thought process & it makes me think about it. Add to that the retarded continued support for Cain in spite of everything that he's said (I don't give a flying fuck about the harassment stuff) & I really can't trust the arguments coming from the purity police.

230 "Romney fan?"  Honestly, I have yet to meet a single one.

Certainly, Mitt would suck the enthusiasm out of the conservative base.  That would delight the libtards, who likely constitute the bulk of Mitt's poll support as posers.  Same strategy as last time, when they delivered McCain.

FWIW -- I'm stuck living in Dixie, and the Baptists down here would never vote for a Mormon.  That doesn't necessarily make any sense, but it's true nonetheless.

231 Evangelicals aint gonna vote for a mormon. No way in hell is romney going to beat obama. Posted by: Floral Bumhole at November 10, 2011 06:34 PM (9JHuT) 1. I hold a much higher view of evangelicals than to say they're all bigots. Much higher. 2. You think SCoaMF is going to win states where evangelicals hold the most sway if it were between teh one & Romney? So, Obama is going to win Mississippi & Texas. Right.

Posted by: yomomma at November 10, 2011 03:40 PM (DKLl9)

232 "Evangelicals aint gonna vote for a mormon."

Actual I know some that will.  Some people understand Article 6 some don't.  No big deal if you do not support Romney because of politics - dirt stupid if you do it because he is one of "those".

I'm sure evangelicals appreciate Obama's good Christian faith.

I would vote for a plastic garden gnome over Obama. This is a broken glass election for me. The other factor to keep in mind is that you can vote for more conservative candidates in the House, Senate, Gubernatorial, and State Legislative elections, where there are, in many cases, no term limits. They can also hold Romney's feet to the fire.

With regards to the person who wouldn't vote for a Mormon, that is narrow thinking. I have a bigger problem with Romney as  RINO.

I apologize if this was touched on before.

234 I wonder how many of the people here saying that they will never vote for Romney in the GENERAL election said they same thing about McCain and then held their noses and voted for him anyway. They seem to be the same people who absolutely KNEW how awful Obama would be as a president- you can't have me believe that you stayed home in 2008.

249.  I swore I wouldn't vote for Mav and then he picked Palin.

There is no such arrow in the quiver this time, so forget about it.

Take your charges of bigotry and confidence in conservative's sense of fair play and cram it up your azz.

In 2006 Rasmussen had 42% of the electorate would not support their party's nominee if they were Mormon.

There will be no enthusiam gap with Romney as the nominee and 20% of the Right are voting third party if at all.

All you have to hope for is a Senate rollover despite no coat tails.

Romney is the GOP's Kerry. So stiff as to be ridiculous. He is unelectable, that's why the MSM is telling that he is the only one who is, giving us McCain - the Sequel.
