— Ace He did not (IIRC) actually have the stones to blame Republicans by name -- but he did blame them by reference, claiming he had warned the nation that a "lengthy debate" about the debt limit could have dire consequences, including an economic slowdown.
Unmentioned is why he and the Democrats couldn't yield more quickly on spending cuts in order to avert this outcome which he claims, retrospectively, he prophecized.
He called for, yet again, a "long-term, balanced approach" to tackling the debt crisis, the signature element of which is "tax reform," by which he means tax hikes. He also noted the need for "modest" adjustments to Medicare.
As usual, he did not explain what these "modest" adjustments might be.
He concluded with a rah-rah that "America will always be a triple A" country, and that these problems are eminently "solvable."
For good measure, he noted that there are some things a President just can't control, such as "earthquakes" and economic slowdowns in other parts of the world, but that we can control our own response to these "disruptions." (Like, for example: Tax reform.)
One of the most absurd parts of the statement was when he averred "we all know what we need to do" (or words to that effect) and that political plans were plentiful; we only lack "political will."
This from the man who continues to refuse to offer his own plan, with real numbers, and real cuts, and real political guts.
He says we all know what we have to do, and yet he refuses to state what exactly that is. We just know.
Will he be finally unveiling a plan? No. In the coming weeks, he says he will offer "recommendations" -- the same pablum with no numbers, the same gauzy "principles" designed via focus-group to be so vague as to be meaningless (and hence to alienate no voters, but also advance no actual agenda).
Leadership.

They downgraded based on total cumulative debt and mid-range expenses (ie spending).
Had the House (Tea Party) simply rubber-stamped the debt limit increase, total debt and expenses would have been unchanged, and the downgrade would have come anyway.
The only fix here is for the current occupants of the White House to get tossed out, and for the Republicans to take over the Senate.
Even THEN its still going to pretty hard to change much without a Republican supermajority, but at least we'd have a fighting chance.

Besides blame and criticism, Obama's statment was full of nothing except contradictions.
Obama proposed the following: tax cuts, tax hikes, debt reduction, and spending.
Obama said everything and nothing. He's long on a weird and conflicted vision, short on details.

Not incidentally, the debate on the debt limit had little to nothing to do with the SP downgrade.
They downgraded based on total cumulative debt and mid-range expenses (ie spending).
The Dems could have passed a 'balanced plan' had they wanted to'. But then they would have owned that decision. This is why they chose to actually ignore crafting a budget. We're seeing this in Europe as well. Glenn Reynolds is right. The ruling class isn't nearly up to the challenge of dealing with this, but they are all bound and determined to not be tagged with the blame. We are watching senators at $174,000 each repeating lines that would get you laughed at if you put them in a high school paper.
I was thinking that Obama would eventuall get a challenger to his right. Now I'm wondering why anyone there would want to try? They'd start out without the leftist base, and be saddled with the mess even if they won. It would be better to revert to political sniper mode, and they did 2001 - 2006.

Ever notice how most of the "yes we can" crowd is too young to remember Carter? Hell, a lot of them don't remember Reagan.
Which is why they keep trying to draw a correlation to Reagan. They know that the kiddies have no idea who he was or what he did, but that their parents LOVED him. So, if Obama can convince them how Reaganesque he is, they might buy into it. They certainly won't check the facts for themselves.

Here is how Obama's mind works.
1) We need to tax the rich more, so they pay their "fair share"
2) Increasing taxes on the rich means that the rich don't hire so many people to work in their businesses. How do we solve this?
3) Mandate that all businesses must maintain at least 85% of their ideal workforce.
4) Who decides what counts as an "ideal" workforce size?
5) We (the Government) do.
6) Companies may not be able to afford to pay for that many workers, and may have to shut down. This would cause more job loss.
7) Mandate that companies cannot declare bankruptcy without government approval.
Any businesses that request bankruptcy will be offered the choice to go bankrupt or become government owned.
9) Government takes over 75% of businesses seeking bankruptcy
10) Government businesses undercut the private market by selling goods and services for below market value because government does not have to turn a profit.
11) More businesses go bankrupt and fall under government control.
12) Government eventually controls 95% of the economy, with the other 5% dominated by illegal "shadow economy" transactions.
13) Government mandates that all purchases must be made via government-issued credit cards, and all homes and non-government businesses will be subject to regular audits to ensure that no goods or services acquired in the previous year were done via cash or barter channels.
14) ???
15) PROFIT!!

I was so furious with my local news this morning, I nearly threw my teacup through the TV screen. As I've mentioned previously, I usually don't watch the news in the morning, local or otherwise, because being afflicted with homicidal rage is no way to get through the day. But this morning I happened to want to catch the local forecast, so I put on my local TV news just in time to hear the blonde twit morning anchor say the stupidest thing ever. Paraphrasing:
"America's S&P credit rating has been downgraded from AAA to AA+, due to the protracted battle over the debt deal that left the credit agency believing that government leaders aren't equipped to handle the current economic crisis."
I was barely awake, still hadn't showered or eaten breakfast, and I sat up with a blaze of fury and quite literally SHOUTED at my TV screen, "S&P has been saying for WEEKS that we'd get downgraded anyway if we didn't cut spending, you stupid, tow-headed, ignorant media whore!"
Needless to say, I have been in a pissy mood all day. Barry O'Bamalama's spiteful little presser just made it that much worse.

Seems to me that CCB, Ryan's Budget, etc. comprise the type of plans, if followed would have allowed us to avoid the S&P downgrade.
For example, France instituted a retirement/pension reform plan that allowed them to keep their AAA.
So the House has multiple plans and Obama has a teleprompter, yet it's the "other guys" fault?

So we certainly want to see Obama 'fail' in that regard.
We do not, however, want him to be able to take the country down with him, which is kinda where we're going right now.
We do not have a parliamentary system. We cannot expect a cabal of Democrat senators looking out for their own interests in 2012 to accidentally do something good for the country and throw Obama out.
I have fantasies - and I'm sure that's all they are - of a quarter or a third of the Democrats in Congress deciding Obama is enough of a threat to the country that he must be neutered now. Where they'd go from there is another question.
